Description
Unlike nature most of the activities human beings undertake creates waste, therefore there is a need to keep a watch on waste creation, waste flows of all kinds and the health hazards from them. To engage with waste pickers who manage 10-15% of municipal waste and hazardous technologies that kill their livelihood. It has to be approached with the aim to work on the following aspects:
1) Chemicals Inventory: containing information on chemicals, toxic releases and wastes such as nuclear waste, municipal waste, health care waste, industrial waste etc. There are more than 80,000 chemicals in trade and commerce but only approximately 15,000 have ever been tested. To work as an alliance for safe management of chemicals in keeping with the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), an international policy framework adopted in February 2006.
2) Fighting toxic pollution with schools, wastepickers and communities
3) Building a Global Alliance Against Pollution (GAAP) against NIMBY approach to seek implementation of environmental education to campaign for toxics free fields, homes, schools & offices - with the help of the toxics inventory & body burden
4) Work as a Zero Waste Alliance with waste pickers & communities for clean production and accountability to get rid of toxics laden food, ships, computers, monitors, copiers, fax machines, printers, televisions, toys and other electronic items that are fast becoming "obsolete". Track of waste generation & management and campaign for LCA approach.
5) Initiating work on Radioactive and Biological toxicity because even minor exposure can cause serious damage
Investigate toxic chemicals and their relationship to wildlife and human health in India. Some 1,000 new chemicals enter the market every year. Very few of these have been tested adequately for the threats they may pose to wildlife and humans. Details: krishnagreen@gmail.com
