Subject: advice on upgrading hard drive and cpu of Vivante SE
jdc@...
Send Email Send Email

I am thinking of upgrading my hard drive and CPU and was hoping that
some people on this list have some advice they could share.

First, the hard drive: the main reason I want to upgrade is to get
something faster. My HD is a 6G Hitachi that came with my Vivante SE
when I bought it almost two years ago. I find it to be very slow.
Can anyone recommend a faster drive, which is also relatively energy
efficient? 8 to 9G would be perfect. Can anyone guess how many rpm
my drive would be? I can't find this in any of the docs. Will any
2.5" IDE drive work?

My CPU is a Celeron 300. I chose this because it was inexpensive and
doesn't consume much power, but now I'd like a bit more speed, maybe
50 to 100% more. Would something like a Celeron 500 be a good option?
Or a Pentium? Or something from AMD? Will any mobile chip fit into
my motherboard? How will the energy use of a modern 500MHz cpu
compare with that of a two year old Celeron 300?

For both of the above, I would be interested in feedback about vendors
which people are happy or unhappy with.

Responses either to me or to the list are fine. I will summarize
any responses sent directly to me.

Thanks,

Dan

This is an appeal once again for a hard drive caddy for a Vivante SE.  Alternatively, if  none is available, I will sell the rest of the machine, which is in excellent condition, for the best offer.  300 mhz PII, 64 mb ram, less than two years old.  Thanks.

Be aware that you have to have an MPEG decoder built-in to use a DVD drive.
I believe the decoder is a daughter card that plugs into the main board,
behind the card that houses the CPU. I haven't ever tried to add a DVD to
my Vivante XL, but from what I've heard it would've required an upgrade to
the mainboard by the Transmonde folks. Good luck, hope I'm wrong.

CPU Chip has been checked OK. It has been sugested to me that a power

problem started, keyboard connector was broke during troubleshooting power
problem.

64 MB RAM
12.1 Active Matrix "NO bad pixels"
1 LI Internal Battery
1 Ni Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery
CD and Floppy Drives with external connectors

I will consider any reasonable offers.

While we're on the topic of selling Transmondes or pricing them part by
part... is anyone looking for parts for a Vibrant LS? Or wanting to buy
the entire thing?

It's a PII 300mhz, 13.3" TFT (no dead or stuck pixels!), 6gb hdd, 128mb
ram, cd-rom/floppy built in, sound, etc. I'd be willing to sell it with a
10BaseT 3com NIC card (w/dongle) and the OEM version of Windows 98 that
came with it. It does not have the built in modem, however. You can
get the full specs from:
http://transmonde.geek.net/review2-jessica-boyd-05-17-99.shtml

The only thing that has changed is that I added 64mb ram and I'd be
selling the ram with the laptop if someone wants it, etc.

I'd sell it with a nice case I have too, I believe it's this one:
http://www.terrapinpc.com/SS200.html I think the case looks pretty much
brand new, I've never really used it. It's sat in a closet.

In the next month or two, I'll be buying a new laptop. I'll still keep
the Transmonde site up -- but hopefully I won't have one anymore. ;)

There are problems with my Vibrant LS:
* Battery doesn't work / doesn't charge
* Missing Z key
* Cracks in chassis in a few places (did this happen to any other Vibrant
LS owners? It has happened to me TWICE which leads me to believe it is
a design flaw and not something I am doing wrong. I was able to get it
fixed before ASE stopped doing service, but the cracks developed again.)

*** I can provide pictures of the laptop (and any of the problems
mentioned) if someone wants to see it before buying, etc. I have a good
digital camera so the quality would be good.

One more thing that might be a problem but I'm doing some experiments to
see how it is working. The machine was powering off whenever it wanted to
-- sometimes when I was using it and sometimes not! For the past two
days, I've been running it without the (bad) battery in it to see if that
makes a difference. So far, it hasn't turned off yet. :) I think if
someone gets a new battery for this model or just decides to use it on a
desk (without the battery!) it would be OK. I bet you could remove the
plastic piece from the battery and stick it onto the laptop so the battery
bay was covered. I'm not going to mess with it.

Let me know if you're interested. I'm looking at the machine trying to
figure out if there's something I've forgotten. :)

Thanks,
Jess

I'm sorry to see the Transmonde's dying off.  I wonder if I am a special case?  I have a Vivante with a P2-266 and it has been flawless from day one.  It's never been in the shop and the only time I have messed with it was to switch from Win95 to Win98 about a year after Win98 came out.

My company is supplying employee's with Toshiba 4300's now and I don't really see a lot of difference in performance.  In fact, the main difference I see is the growth in hard disk capacity from 4 GB to 12 GB.

This is to Jessica, especially, but anyone else as well who has experienced
problems with the battery. I seem to have the same problems of the battery
losing power even though the laptop is plugged into another power supply. It
counts down and then shuts off the computer. I'm then unable to get the
computer to turn back on without removing the battery. Sometimes the battery
power meter with show the battery at full power if I wiggle the cable a bit.
The computer will work fine without the battery in, but I would love to solve
the problem. Since the connection appears loose, I have completely
disassembled the laptop to get to the connection from the inside, but it is
not loose from the motherboard. It just seems that the plug part on the cord
for the power supply is a perhaps stretched out, but I'm not sure how that
would affect the battery, since it still supllies power to the laptop when
the battery is out. Has anyone else experienced this - or have suggestions?
I'm wondering if just replacing my power supply cord might be the solution,
or maybe the battery?
Thanks,
Kirsten

I'm not sure that my laptop has the same problem. My battery always shows
0% charged and NEVER charges. The power turns off sometimes when I'm
using the laptop (I don't know if I bump the cord or what) and sometimes
it does it randomly without me even being nearby!

It does it when the battery is in the laptop and when it's not
in... so... I don't know if it's the same problem.

For those who disassembled everything to get to the power port, what exactly
did you solder? I still wonder if both mine and Jessica's problem isn't
related somehow to how the laptop is getting power.

My battery is dead too!! When my Transmonde was working, I had to wiggle
the power cord and keep it taunt while it was plugged in. I kept it taunt
by running it under the laptop. Well, finally the 'taunt' trick did not
work any more. I no longer got the 'charging' light and the battery finally
died.

For you electricians out there, the power cord was still delivering the
proper voltage, so it wasn't the cord. I opened my Transmonde, but did not
see any broken connections.

A hell of a way to see 3 grand ($$$) go into the trashcan.

I had the same problem with another brand notebook. I took it apart & the
connector was solid into the mother board. However, with a penlight and
magnifying glass I could see into the interior of the connector and
discovered the plastic base of the center pin was cracked. GameOver.

The power supply for my Vibrant LS did the same thing at the point where the
AC line plugs into the box. (I'm awful hard on stuff) I looted a power
supply from a dead Twinhead and spliced the Transmonde plug that goes into
the laptop onto it & it worked like a champ. (I have to create a diversion
when the safety inspectors make a sweep of our building)

I've inquired directly via e-mail to the Taiwanese company ASE about a main
battery since their model called the Falcon II (http://www.aset-tp.com.tw/)
looks & specs out exactly like the Vibrant LS, but don't have much hope.
