Subject: MPEG & DVD problems
onostuff@...
Send Email Send Email

HI,

I have a Vivante SE and am having some problems with MPEG playback and
playing DVDs, and am wondering if I have all the Drivers, etc. I need,
if they are properly installed or if there is anything I need to change
in the Transmonde setup. The main problems are:

1) When playing mpeg 1 files off my hard drive (using the RealMagic
Ventura DVD Station (1.8), the picture is very pixilated and blocky if
expanded to anything larger than about quarter screen. If I click "full
Screen", the image fills the screen vertically, but is squeezed
horizontally, showing about a quarter screen of black on both the left
and right sides of the screen. The Picture is also very blocky.
2) When trying to play commercial DVD titles, I keep getting an "MCI
ERROR" –MMSYSTEM275 cannot find the specified file. Make sure the path
and file name are correct"
This was with trying to play "The Haunting" and "Golden Eye". When I
tried to play "Phantoms", the FBI warning played, then a little
"Dimensions" animation, then the screen just stayed black and didn't
show the movie.

Configuration and history.

I purchased my SE a year ago December with the MPEG option installed,
but without the DVD player. It has 64 meg of RAM, and I recently
updated from Windows 98 to Windows 98 second edition. It has the Chips
and Technology video controller, and the 69000 PCI drivers, (which I
loaded from the VIDEO folder on the Transmonde CD.
A few weeks ago, I purchased one of ASE's DVD players. (It is a Toshiba
DVD-ROM SD-C20021724). I swapped out the new DVD player from my other
CD, and reloaded the software and drivers according to the instructions
I found posted in the Transmonde user Group (from Lou), doing the video
drivers first (using the drivers in the VIDEO folder and not the VGA
folder), uninstalling the RealMagic stuff, and then reinstalling it and
finally the stuff from the DVD folder. I have done this 3 times now,
but basically keep getting the problems mentioned above. The drive
seems to function fine as a CD and audio CD player.
Included with my SE at the time of purchase was a 2 sided instruction
sheet titled "Reinstalling Windows 98" with some instructions for
reinstalling the Transmonde drivers after reinstalling Windows, which
are somewhat similar to the instructions that I found in the user group
setup, with some additions. Under MPEG-2, it says to go to the Device
Manager area and select "PCI Multimedia Device" and reinstall Driver,
to install the driver from the MPEG-2 folder. I can't find a "PCI
Multimedia Device" listing in the Device Manager, although there is an
area called Sound, video and game controllers" with a listing for a
"RealMagic DVD Module" in it. Should there also be "PCI Multimedia
Device" listing in the Device Manager

I have questions, but will stop for now. If any one could help shed
some light on this, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Patrick Heley

Does anyone know if it is possible to get extended warranty coverage
for a Transmonde Vivante SE through the parent company? I bought my
machine about 10 months ago, so my 1 year warranty will expire soon.

The Transmonde company has gone out of business.
You can try the company ASE, but I doubt it.

Good Luck.

Hello all,
My Vivante SE's 4GB hard drive is starting to fail.
I purchased the extended 2 year warranty, and I'm
wondering how to go about getting it fixed. Does
anybody have the URL for the company that handles
repairs now?

Also, has anyone had them do repairs? How did the
process go?

It might be small consolation, but that's a standard notebook drive, if you
can't get anything out of ASE.

Larry-

The url is http://www.aseusa.com, and btw, you can only access their website
with Internet Explorer (for some reason Netscape won't work!). I have sent
them a couple emails with questions about repairs, and never received any
response. The website includes instructions for service, which apparently
are strictly observed. You must print out a form, and can only fax it to
them. Once you receive the RMA number, you must send proof of ownership and
warranty, along with a check (no credit cards) for return shipping. As the
other message said, the hard drive is an easy owner replacement. I had one
fail last year, and can only suggest you back up everything RIGHT NOW,
before it's too late. Good luck. ~Geo

Anyone know if the Vivante SE DVD playback is supported under Windows

I currently have a VivanteSE, and am wondering whether it is worth
buying the MPEG card & DVD drive. A lot of problems were reported with
Windows98.

Any ideas?

Here's the situation. I own a 2.5 year old Vibrant w/P133. It doesn't
power up correctly. I'm not sure if it's an internal battery problem
or if it's in some type of super sleep mode. When I push the power
button, some times it takes 3 tries to get it to start up. Then, the
drives don't spin up and you can't even get into setup. It just sits
with a blank screen. There is an icon on the lcd status panel (on the
chassis - not the display panel) that I don't remember seing before.
It is a the letters ZV inside a rectangle. I'm thinking that is
related to my problem but, as you all know, my owners manual did'nt
come with alot of detailed information.
I thought that if I removed and re-installed my cmos battery if it was
in a 'super sleep' I would clear that from memory...unfortunately the
battery appears to be soldered to the motherboard.
Thoughts, questions, comments...anyone?
Thanks djs

ASE Technologies, who made the parts for Transmonde and honors their
warantees, has a site at http://www.aseusa.com/ttiwarr.html. I believe
that they do not sell additional or extenden warrantees bur the
indicate that the will service computers for a fee plus shipping. They
also sell parts and accessories. Hope this helps you. Bill Chase

Check at http://www.aseusa.com//ttiwarr.html ...they say that they will
honor warrantees or if expired will repair for a price. Contact them

I don't think iot's electrically possible; in order to do that there have
to be certain electromechanical features that I've not seen the floppy nor
CD-ROM (at least power pins that don't make contact until the signal pins
are already in).

Not only did ASE Technologies make the Transmonde notebooks, they also
owned Transmonde Technologies.

Not as far as I know. I believe that they still manufacture notebook
computers for other companies. In addition, when I did a search on the
Web, I found evidence that they are selling notebook computers under the
"ASE Technologies" name, as well.

Hi Berk,

The same thought occurred to me. I wish I could give you a simple answer.
According to one Web page I found, ASE Technologies has made notebook PCs
for IBM, Canon, Sanyo and Epson (and probably others, as well). See the
following Web page:

http://www.zdnet.co.uk/pcmag/flooks/1999/06/r274.html

I doubt that there is a cross-reference available anywhere, but perhaps
someone could construct one by comparing features lists of different models
from other brands. These could then be compared with the features of the
Transmonde models. By features, I am referring to hardware configurations,
of course.

Hi everyone,

Anyone using Windows 98 SE on a Transmonde, especially a Transmonde SE? I
read that Windows 98 SE is the most compatible version of Windows for
laptops. Unfortunately, I've also heard complaints about Windows 98 SE. I
was thinking about upgrading, but I thought I'd fish for comments first.

Phil,
I have installed both the original version of Win98 and Win98 SE several
times
on my Vivante SE 266. I have not had a problem with either. The only thing
you
really will need is the driver CD from Transmonde, and even then most things
will
still work with the 'vanilla' Microsoft drivers.

Larry,

Thanks for the reply. Did you notice any increase in stability when Win98
SE was on your Vivante SE? I am running Windows 98 with Service Pack 1 on
my Vivante SE 300, and I crash quite frequently. The worse part about it
is that the computer is usually so messed up after a crash that I can't
boot into normal Windows. I can usually boot into Safe Mode, but sometimes
it will even crash in Safe Mode. Usually it takes hours of screwing around
with the computer before I can get it to boot normally again. Needless to
say, I am not very happy with this situation.
