I am pretty open this week, and it might be helpful. But I hesitate to "weigh
in" on
priorities - we are the rookies and in little position to comment much.
As far as the meta data reports, I have gotten some to populate, others not. I
guess I don't
know what they were supposed to include. I had thought, from a beginner's view,
that this
might be the way to move studies between sites. Specifically, if on DCC had a
set of forms
that worked well in a particular domain, they could print out the metadata
report and this
would provide sufficient information for another DCC to replicate it. Not as
elegant as an
electronic export and import, but still pretty nice.
For example, the Yale site has an example set of forms, but NO WAY for anyone
outside
Yale to see the construction of the forms, etc. This could become the basis of
tutorial
materials, etc. I know that the Boston GLUE grant has forms that I could
directly use, but
have no way to obtain their construction details in an easy manner.

I have found some non-agnostic code on casual browsing of the source in the
Access client;
for example, I found some code that was commented out and said that this would
be the
appropriate code for SQL Server; the code that was not commented out was Oracle
correct.
Waiting for Eric to return and set up client. I DID make up a completely new
question, and
it expands properly, so I must have inadvertently done something to the example.

I assume you have already purchased the Sharepoint server (we would have to pay
$1403
for a perpetual license). The Team System versions of VS comes for architects,
deveopers,
and testers, which is of course absurd. The Entire Team Suite with MSDN
subscription is
$5620 for us (annually), and is described as a single user license. On the
other hand, can
purchase VS Professional (single user) for $190 as a perpetual license. Unless
our group
turns out to be quite large, I think SourceSafe and individual Pro licenses will
be much
cheaper. For us, Visual Sourcesafe costs $25. However, I have no familiarity
with it, and
have no idea how it scales beyond one developer.
Part of my ignorance, however, is the commitment to .Net - it appears to be an
excellent
platform, etc., but I cannot tell what parts of TrialDB have and have not been
ported to
this. I am guessing that the client side is half way there, interpreting Tom's
email, and
that the Access client is ... where? If this client (Access) is not ported,
then it is not really
necessary to have a Team System or even multiple Pro licenses; the bulk of data
center
activity is (I think, but am 5 days into this) centered around the Access
client.

The version we are researching and have already implemented beta until we
get a quote on release is not Visual SourceSafe. It is the newer release of
it called team foundation server. It acts like sourcesafe, but is designed
for distribution much better. It integrates with Microsft Sharepoint to
allow for all the features of E-room, while leaving room for shared
repository functions as well. Sourcesafe is already installed live with a
release version. All I am waiting on is Team Server. It is specifically
designed to integrate with MS VS 2005 Team System. I believe that it answers
all issues adequately, the only remaining issue is price. I am working on
that and should have an answer tomorrow. Team Server also has shared project
capabilities over a website, as well as the ability to install a client that
allows view only status of the project for free. CALS are not an issue
because VS 2005 any version includes CALS for it.
Team server / sharepoint also allows for multiple site (room) creations as
well as drag and drop. The only difference I saw was that eroom used full
size icons a good bit more, as MS version uses links, although there are
settings to change things like that.
This is just for clarification.

Subject: [trialdb] eRoom Questions
eRoom does NOT provide ANY software repository functionality similar to CVS
or
Subversion, in which you can see line by line changes to any code from any
version all the
way back to the beginning of the project. I have never used SourceSafe, but
I presume
that it does the same thing that these two products do, though I understand
it is usually
installed on a single developer machine and used for local version control.
I am absolutely
unfamiliar with source versioning systems that can be used with Microsoft
products.
eRoom does provide a very easy mechanism for moving stuff around, with drag
and drop,
and is extremely easy for new users who can build their own rooms for their
own projects,
etc. Separation of rooms permits topics to be broken up, etc. but this
would probably not
have much impact on TrialDB work. Thus, we use it for developing grants,
manuscripts,
documentation, and for actually distributing software to our clients. It is
platform neutral.
Biggest use, for us, is ability to have the main version of any document,
primarily Word
documents, on the eRoom, and then it is accessible from any computer. For
myself, I have
three computers that I regularly use, and I keep main versions on eRoom.
However, for
source (Java, Python, and LaTeX), I use Subversion because of its line by
line comparison
capabilities, etc.
All this being said, what Matt has set up seems fully functional - I just
have not seen it
handle the source versioning, etc. It looks like we can add files, etc. It
is easy to provide a
link from within eRoom to hit his site, but if eRoom does not add
significant
communications value, then it is just an extra step.
You guys have been doing this longer than me, and I have no allegiance to
eRoom use.

Guys, maybe we can get together by conference call or something this week or
next to air issues and prioritize. We could even have an install up and
running for demonstration of issues. Ours is relatively straightforward, we
could use it if needed.

I have never been happy with the meta-data reports. I don't think it is a matter
of which backend is being used. I just don't think they work that well.
Why don't we together decide on what information they should convey, and how,
then we can update them. I don't think the changes would be extensive, most of
the bones are there, it just needs to be tweaked a bit to provide good
information in a readable format.

On moving to .net, my impression is that efforts are being directed first at the web forms (being able to create .net versions from the access client), then moving on to the remainder of the client.
The asp code is database agnostic. Where there is code that has been commented out, likely it was replaced with code that could work on either install. It does at times check for which database is being used (from the adminvar table), and applies appropriate code (mostly this has to do with the convert function and date handling). In many places, ODBC functions are used, and the odbc engine handles the conversion to the appropriate format.
Moving meta data from one installation to another will never be easy, with the current structure. Because the tables use incremented identity columns, all of the references would have to be updated. It seems to me that the best way to handle this would be to create a study export/import function based on CDISC. Prakash would be able to provide more information.
I only know of Yale, JHU, and UAB as actually modifying code. There are other installations, but I don't know if they are feeding changes back to Yale.
Could you please supply us with more information on eroom, such as whether it can serve as a source control database, and if so, how?

Not sure, Tom may have to look at the

Screenshot is in the Files
section of the Yahoo group - not attached to the email.
Am not hitting this from a report utility - in the
main study view with the tree view of the study, to the lower right, there are four buttons
- to create web forms, metadata reports, printed forms, and dictionary.
Trying to select required questions for a form - actually made two of them
mandatory when I
wrote the questions, but they do not show up in the right hand listbox on the
screenshot
(Required1.tiff). Nevertheless, tried to add fields and get error
(Required2.tiff), and following
the Debug button, I end up in code shown in Required3.tiff. The loop runs until
it gets to the
item I select - in the example from the screenshot, of course, varitem = 0 at
the time of the
crash.
All screenshots are uploaded into the Files area of this Yahoo group.

By the way, my install does not have a
metadata report options, which version of the reports pages are you using? The
ones tom gave you?

(with the correct study name). Do the metadata reports work with the SQL Server backend?

I cannot answer for all, as I am
relatively new to the app as well, but have gooten a good bit of involvement.
I
would like to know more about Eroom as our group is relatively small, I
would have to estimate less than 20, but Prakash could answer that better.
Myself and Thomas Hoen have been trying to initiate a common repository
under team foundation server, but it is still in the works. I would like
to know more about eroom. On the other notes
The
import study feature is available within a single install, but not sure
about between two installs.
There
is currently an effrort to move the remaining code to asp.net. Prakash and
Cynthia are the main two behind it, but Tom and I are hoping to help
wherever possible.
Everyone else, please feel free to comment
/ add.
PS, I am bassplayer39@... on MSN

Questions
We (Utah) are obviously the newest newbies in
the TrialDB community and I am interested in knowing the current status on certain things:
1. Is there a common repository for the
source code? Such a repository might have a separate version for the two backends, unless the
code is checking to see the vendor - type to determine whether to use Oracle versus SQL
Server. I have found a number of places where the SQL Server code is commented out,
but it is made clear that it should be commented in if that is the backend.
2. Is there currently an effort to move the
code to .Net, C#, Java, etc.? There have been rumors to the effect of all three, but obviously
this is not the case. I am interested in knowing where to focus my programmer
expertise.
3. How large (in people) is the community of
individuals who are involved in development efforts, including programming, fixes, bug
tracking, documentation development, etc.? Is this 6, 10, 25, 100? I ask because we have a
rather expensive (but essentially paid for) digital office system called eRoom, and if the
community is actually quite small, we could offer this capability as our "entry
initiation fee".
4. Probably buried in the docs, but not yet
uncovered by me, but is there a way for one installation to import a study, with its
associated forms, groups, and questions, from another installation? I guess a variation of
this question is whether there could or should be a common repository for metadata? Sorry
for my ignorance on the terminology.
Created simple form with a couple of enumerated questions, and when I generate
paper
forms in Word format I get the question, but then just brackets without
descriptions.

For Utah
and UAB, you are likely missing some operators that are used in setting up skip
logic.
To correct this, open your access client, and browse to your
tables, and open the Valid_Operator table. You should have 92 records.
Add the following entries to the table.
VALID_OPERATORS
DATATYPE
OPERATOR
OPTYPE
S
NOT IN
R
D
NOT IN
R
I
NOT IN
R
O
NOT IN
R
E
NOT IN
R
R
NOT IN
R
You should now have 98 records. Not In is a very handy
operator when you have more than one item in a selection list that would enable
(or not disable) another field, and the selection list is long.
This may also require a change in the access client code. I
will let you know.
This revised code is very useful and fixes a bug - thanks, Tom.
The code below can benefit from a very modest change
Change
If curOp = "IN" Then
to
If curOp = "IN" or curOp = "NOT IN" Then

In order to allow the Skip Fields function in the Access client to “Show the Details” of a Enumerated question that is disables another question using the “IN” operator, I had to modify the bShowQualDetails_Click() subroutine in the Form_Clusters code. The modified code is below.
Thanks
Tom
Private Sub bShowQualDetails_Click()
'tdh 11/22/2005 modify to work with selection sets and the IN operator
Dim F As Form, CurQuestion_ID As Long, curOp As String, curValue1 As String
Dim curQual As String, curValue2 As String, curDisabl As String, curDataType As String
Dim S As String, curValSt1 As String, curValSt2 As String, rs As DAO.Recordset, choiceSetID As Variant
Dim tmpselval As Integer, tmpINlist As String, tmpintarray() As String, x As Integer
'Show details of the item in English by seeing if it is a Choice Set or a Boolean
Set gCurDB = CurrentDb
Set F = [Qualifying_Questions Subform].Form
CurQuestion_ID = SQL_GetSingleValue("select Question_ID from Qualifying_Questions where Cluster_Question_ID=" & F!Cluster_question_ID)
Set rs = gCurDB.OpenRecordset("select Datatype, Discrete_Value_Group_ID from Questions where Question_ID=" & CurQuestion_ID, dbOpenDynaset, dbSeeChanges)
curDataType = rs(0):: choiceSetID = Nz(rs(1), 0)
Select Case curDataType
Case "E", "O"
'TDH 11/22/2005 corrected to handle using the IN operator with selection sets)
If curOp = "IN" Then
curValSt1 = ""
tmpintarray() = Split(Mid(curValue1, 2, Len(Trim(curValue1)) - 2), ",") 'remove the parenthesis, then split
'for each of the values in the IN list, get their corresponding name
For x = 0 To UBound(tmpintarray)
curValSt1 = curValSt1 & SQL_GetSingleValue("select Short_name from Discrete_Values where Discrete_Value_Grp_ID=" & choiceSetID & " and Serial_Number=" & tmpintarray(x)) & ", "
When creating skip patterns is the “Not
In” operator available? It is mentioned in the description of the field that
holds the “IN/Not In” list but is not in the drop down of operators,
at least when the question uses a discrete value lists (type = enumerated).
I have a long value list, where if two of
the values are selected additional information is collected. I tried using In
(with the list being every other value), but it didn’t work. The same
question also disables/enables another field, and when I used the In list, it
effected the disabling of the wrong field (even though it was set up properly
in the Skip Fields.
In order to allow the Skip Fields function in the Access
client to “Show the Details” of a Enumerated question that is
disables another question using the “IN” operator, I had to modify
