AMTA, the Association for Machine Translation in the Americas will
hold its biennial conference August 8-12, 2006 in Cambridge, MA, USA
(http://amta2006.amtaweb.org). This time, the conference will
feature a special continuous program track of presentations by and
for users of MT. The AMTA 2006 User Program Team solicits proposals
for conference sessions that will help users to advance their own
goals in working with machine translation, and communicate
priorities to the research community, commercial developers, and
integrators. The conference provides a forum to share your
experience working with MT, and learn from others. Below are some
areas targeted for their high relevance to MT users today. Proposals
on other topics are also welcome.

Proposals accepted through May 7, 2006. Please request a submission
form from Focalpoint@... or download from the conference

with user/consumer expectations and reactions to MT output

Memory, terminology databases, etc.
3. How useful is MT output? - Identifying quality thresholds for
usability in postediting or information gathering
4. Postediting
5. Current MT Technology - pros and cons of various approaches
(Statistical, rule-based, example based, hybrid combination);
Projects that illustrate the strengths weaknesses of particular
approaches.
6. MT for different kinds of applications (information assimilation,
publication - user documentation vs. literature): how do requirements
differ?
7. Generic MT (using an MT engine the way it came from the vendor)
vs. customized



The type of content that will be most valuable: Practical, specific,
first hand accounts of what has been done, how it worked, how user
and funder concerns have been addressed.

Call for Tutorials

Deadline: April 24, 2006

We welcome your proposals and ideas for the Tutorial Program at AMTA
2006! Tutorials will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2006, the day
before the main conference begins.

Tutorials at AMTA conferences are forums in which the unique
perspectives of stakeholder groups can be shared with members of the
MT community at large. Translators, translation managers,
technologists, information analysts, system developers, research
scientists and MT watchers in general come together around the
common goal of encouraging the enhancement of meaning transfer
across languages.

Participants learn how issues are being addressed. Issues might
include new media, unique data challenges, technological advances,
input degradation from character or speech recognition, the
incorporation of novel computational processes, the variety of
currently available approaches to evaluation and more. Topics are
presented in an accessible and understandable manner, one which
provides for interactive Q&A. In other words, tutorials  provide
valuable information that helps attendees get more out of the
conference!

We ask that tutorials be of interest to a broad audience.

Send a title and brief description of the proposed tutorial's topic
and content, including a short outline of the presentation or
interactive activity, showing that the content can be covered in
three hours. Be sure to include technical requirements and the
professional expertise of the organizers of the tutorial.

The deadline for proposing tutorials is April 24th.

Call for Workshops

Deadline: April 24, 2006

Proposals for Workshops at AMTA 2006 are now being solicited.

Workshops will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2006 the day after
the main conference ends.

Special interest groups looking for an opportunity to present recent
work related to MT may want to organize a workshop at AMTA 2006.

Developers, evaluators, researchers and IP specialists are engaged
in the process of understanding better the effects of specific
approaches to the refinement of sense rendering. Workshops are often
successfully organized around these approaches. The incorporation of
named-entity extraction, ontology-based semantic representation and
domain-specific dictionaries are but a few of the many possible
examples. Such workshops provide an opportunity for increasing
awareness of new work in a given approach or technique of interest.

Submissions should be made to Michelle Vanni mvanni@... by
April 24th. They should include the title of the workshop, a
proposed schedule (e.g. call for papers, recruitment of speakers),
workshop activities (papers, hand-on activities, shared tasks),
technical requirements, the expected number of participants, and
whether this is an ongoing or new workshop.

I was very happy to see all the answers as I opened my Yahoo mail
today!

Many congrats to Jos Bailleul for his new baby.
I have not yet had requests to translate using Trados. But I am sure
it will come...
I learned several things in those messages : especially the merge of
Trados and SDLX.
And about this new beast called XLIFF....I need to find some
information about this! Had no idea it even existed!

Hello,

for what it is worth (since we don't know each other): I would support
Jost's opinion. 12 months ago I was desperately seeking doc2xml2doc
roundtripping solutions. There are people out there doing this but it is
expensive to buy (in particular if you wanted a thin server based
solution). But of course the next MS Office version will change the
world (at least of non-OpenOffice users) in terms of conversion to XML.
I guess that is why I agree with Jost on the prediction that there will
be a change in Trados' approach.

I agree also with him to focus on XLIFF conversions (though Heartsome
has done quite a bit there). So that would be filters for non-MS Office
applications (because MS will release free filter and conversion tools
(doc2xml, xls2xml etc) with the next Office version. If you focus on
roundtripping any kind of xml format to xliff and then back to the
original xml, then you are onto something.

But if you want to build filters for third party tools, then you will
have to deal with inline formats in a way that all or most XLIFF tools
can deal with them. Our xls files, for example, aren't well received by
Heartsome because of the encoding of the inline formatting.

Another area I can think of is that the way that Trados7 and SDLX2005
supports XLIFF is rather sketchy, which is sad for us, because we want
to enable our translators to use their tools.
To me the major problem with the way Trados, SDL and Deja Vu currently
use xliff is that they don't display <alt-trans> content - which means
that the translator basically misses out on a very important feature. So
in terms of Deja Vu, this would mean that the <alt-tran> need to find
their way into the project (the lexicon seems to be a great starting
point for a work-around).

Anyway - this was just a quick brainstorm. I would be very interested if
you happen to look into the DV issue because that'll be a cool one.

In fact, I have been thinking about bringing some new stuff to the
market, but I don't really now what.  I still have some parts of the
unfinished version 2 of Trans Suite.

Building a new version of TS2000 doesn't seem to be such a good
idea.  And now that I hear SDLX and Trados have merged, the battle
would be even bigger to get a piece of the large cake.

Hi Alain,

At first I thought you were joking, but it's true.  I had never
really seen SDLX as major competetion.  Trados was always the big one
to compete with.  The world is a strange place.

I guess this shows I haven't follewed to translation business the
last few (many) months.

Yes, still alive.  I'm currently working as a system administrator
for a company called Unilin (recenlty bought by Mohawk).  I had to
make sure I had an income quickly :-)

It's great to see someone posting a message here again (and of course
to hear someone is still using Trans Suite)

How is the translation business going these days?  I've been out of
the loop for quite some while.  Is everyone still trying to beat the
allmighty Trados, hi hi :-)

support was absolutely awesome -- truly above and beyond the call of
duty.

As far as I know, they got jobs and went back to the corporate fold. I
keep hoping that one day they'll go back to TS2000... but as more time
goes by and nothing happens, it looks more and more hopeless and less
and less likely to happen.

something for free, check out WordFisher, which recently
went to freeware, or OmegaT (open source freeware).

I own TS2000, and as registered owner I have a key for it,
but, even though they have gone out of business, out of
respect for Jos and Allain Bailleul and all their hard work,
I will never give out copies to anyone.

is it right that the pin-code only give access to a trial version of
the programm? I had a computer crash and re-installed the programm on
another compu, but the programm gives a trial version that does not
accept memories with more than 2000 entries.
Maybe I missed some information about this problem.

Actually, in this particular case I used Star Office v5.2
(very old free version), as it's the only version installed
on my computer right now. But Open Office.org should work
just fine, since it's basically the same program.

I've been using Star Office for years to fix corrupted Word
docs.

Words of warning:

= Check tables and headers/footers carefully, as the
conversion can mess them up a bit - but not always.

= I imagine a similar thing might happen with text boxes,
but I never came across those, so I don't know for sure.

= Styles should be OK - they were fine in all the docs I
"fixed".

One more tip: If you have Word Perfect, try using that - it
might work just as well. I used to use WP years ago to
convert from one Word format to another, because their Word
converters were much better than the ones in Word! Or I'd
simply save the imported Word doc in Word Perfect format,
which Word could convert without a problem (naturally, since
it's the competition!).

It's probably as good as any. If Word can't produce an .RTF
version you can open and read with Word itself, then there's
something wrong with that doc.

Always be sure to close down Word *after* the conversion and
*before* you try reading that new .RTF doc with it.
Otherwise, sometimes it will look normal and lead you to
believe it's OK, yet it won't work later when you try to
open it in a new instance of Word.

The problem is exactly like Terry said.  Try the following:

- open the document in Word
- Do a Save As "RTF Document"
- Close Word

No try to open that .RTF document, you'll see that it won't work
either.  The problem is situated in the original document you
received from your client.  I even tried a complete copy and paste of
the document into a new document, but the result is the same.  I
guess their must be some part in the document that is corrupt in some
way, but I haven't found what.

The problem is exactly like Terry said.  Try the following:

- open the document in Word
- Do a Save As "RTF Document"
- Close Word

No try to open that .RTF document, you'll see that it won't work
either.  The problem is situated in the original document you
received from your client.  I even tried a complete copy and paste of
the document into a new document, but the result is the same.  I
guess their must be some part in the document that is corrupt in some
way, but I haven't found what.

I was afraid this was the case...

The only thing I've ever found that can help is to open the
Word doc in Star Office or Open Office.org, then "save as"
Word (or RTF) to create a new doc, and then put it through
Word again. It's not guaranteed to work, though - sometimes
they're just too corrupted.
