LOL!
Perhaps I'm the only person on this list that brings up the argument,
but I'm certainly not alone, nor am I in some decided minority
internationally.
World Intellectual Property laws are at a crossorads. You also have
only to look at the plethora of responses on larger message forums as
well to see
where the debate is headed.
Do you think that if this was such a non-issue as you profess that it
would continuously make the top news of Technology sites such as
Slashdot, and Blogs such as Engadget?
It is specifically because it is of great interest to the public at
large, and because there are valid views on it that it remains
uppermost in the collective consciousness of consumers.
Copyright laws,DRM included, have the potential to dismantle the
internet today as we know it, and to destroy the free flow of
information and the rapid growth and development which we have become
used to.
Witness the admission and the softening of the stance of the WIPO, the
unanimous response of citizens in Canada to altering their copyright
laws a few years ago,
and several other similar movements worldwide.
I mentioned Linux because the same arguments, or lack thereof were
argued against DeCSS, and most of the readers of this list are biased
toward the Operating System. So I thought that mentioning it may
revive some dormant memory of when DeCSS was news, and hopefully
encourage some synaptic spark on the issue, if only by reflex.
ntellectual Property rights and Copyright laws have shifted to the
extreme of the Corporations, and away from providing benefits to the
consumer.
That isn't an argument, it is fact.
The rights of the Consumer are being eroded not by directly attacking
fair use, but by using legislation and technology to sidestep it.
Ahh...but I forget where I am.
You are correct. This is all about freeness.
Mea culpa.
