It's wonderful to see that not every government arm is in the backpockets of big business and corporate interests.

""The BBC's plans to introduce DRM for over-the-air digital broadcasts were today dealt a setback when the regulator, Ofcom, asked them the same question that has been asked of many DRM systems: 'How does this benefit the consumer?' The letter to the BBC is quoted in the article as saying that 'Ofcom received a large number of responses to this consultation, in particular from consumers and consumer groups, who raised a number of potentially significant consumer "fair use" and competition issues that were not addressed in our original consultation.' This does not end the chance of the BBC being allowed to introduce DRM in the future, but it at least delays their opportunity to do so.""

of course we know from experience that Business interests will continue to attempt to circumvent all consumer rights and fair use through DRM, Trade treaties and other legislative maneuvers. Hopefully consumers and the people keep fighting back.

I have some difficulty with the idea that simply using anti-virus
programs and having a firewall, is enough to keep your computer secure.

In my opinion, it is not. I don't believe anti-virus programs do all
they say that they do.

And firewalls can be beaten. Really easily. All it takes is one program
to get to the net and run a proxy and the firewall is useless.

Security is difficult. Anyone who thinks otherwise, is not seeing the
whole thing.

And I submit, it is impossible for anyone, no matter how well informed,
to know everything on the subject.

That's why I spoke out against the use of the word "stupid". People get
fooled, people make mistakes. Happens all the time.

I think we need to accept that and move forward to a position of helping
people. Illuminating the subject - give a man a fish, ...,teach a man to
fish, ...

It would perhaps be useful to have somewhere where people could
contribute tips and tricks to help others? A page on the wiki perhaps?

It’s illegal to steal everywhere. Downloading and using cracks is an activity designed to steal. It’s illegal in the US to circumvent features in software/games etc that were designed  to prevent stealing/copyright violations.

Chilling effects provides useful information on the legality of reverse engineering etc. in light of DMCA, anti-circumvention, copyright etc.

Quite a few notices have already been sent to search engines for listing cracks-

I’ve been told by some Mac ppl that  drive-by infections also attack Mac OS Personal Computers. Malicious websites don’t really care what OS you are running, as they do a lot of their bad stuff in the  browser. I am sure that as more people move to Mac OS, there will be more and more malware  created for that platform – given that the criminals go where the people are.

It’s not about MacOS, or Windows or Linux – all OSes have holes and all are compromisable -  but about people doing unsafe and stupid stuff. Did you see how many of the ppl got infected via file sharing programs, or because they were looking for cracks and hacks to get games for free? How many had their antivirus disabled and didn’t realize?

The men have never met, and they were unaware of each other.
Both of them research their family history as a hobby, but finding each other through traditional methods (such as sifting through census, marriage or property records) would have been unlikely if not impossible.
And yet their DNA profiles match so closely that they can be certain of sharing a common ancestor within the past six generations. It took scientific sleuthing for the two men to make a connection....

I'm sorry to say it, but people must *really* be in love with Windows if they still use it after reading this article...

Evidence Act Chapter 7:02 as amended deals with the admissibility of statements produced by computers (section 40).

It is admissible as evidence of any fact if
-the document containing the statement was produced b the computer during a period over which the computer was used regularly to store/process information for the purposes of activities regularly carried on...
-over the period there as regularly supplied to the computer in the ordinary course of those activities information of the kind from which the statement or of the kind from which the information so contained is derived
- that throughout the material part of that period the computer was operating properly...
-the information contained in the statement reproduces or is derived from information supplied to the computer in the ordinary course of those activities

I would love to link you to the Act on ttparliament website... but it seems to be down for quite some time now.

Also found a pretty interesting albiet lengthy article on this (attached). Our legislation is not well developed in this area so we will likely take heed of common law principles.

How admissible is it for evidence though? Can a post on someone's wall or a status (or a "bad" poke!) be labeled as a treat or something like that? Seems people would gossip on these site about factual stuff, but rumors also develop along with like hearsay. How "official" can posts on these networks be?

""As the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is known for
a very rigid course combating counterfeiting and piracy in
general, it comes as a surprise that during a meeting of the WIPO
Advisory Committee on Enforcement, several presenters have shown
nuanced
views on the [0]economics of enforcing intellectual property rights.

Combating clothing piracy might not be beneficial for the welfare of a
developing country. Most surprising is the [1]presentation of WIPO
Chief
Economist (PDF) [2]Carsten Fink, which says that illegal copies of
software may actually be beneficial even for consumers of the original
goods.

Also the piracy of audio-visual goods creates not only losses but also
benefits for e.g. hardware manufacturers."

Someone obviously wasn't paid off and taught the company line yet.
It would be interesting to note if any of these presenters ever appear
again in the future ;-).
