Hey shivan,
Unless the site is specifically designed to create a community around that,
why not decide on a P2P app (like Xo|oX or Kazaa) let the group download the
app from your site to trade files. You should be able to form an exclusive
groups as well using these apps.
A site like that may run into file size management issues. Right now a
client of mine stresses me with his email exchange of mp3s. It is proving to
be inefficient and insufficient for his needs. He also likes to back it up.
Where? On the mail server. (don't laugh, it's not funny. Lol! lol!)
Other than that ryan was right. You will need some dynamic web language
communicating with a database to achieve that.. PHP/SQL is a good
"free/stable" combo.
Good luck on your quest..

well the ftp is a good idea but the audience i expect would not be
that technical.
someone mentioned tha i used the .htaccess file. thats works for me.
when users hit that part of the site, they are prompted for a user
name and password.

Regards,
Shivan
Hi Shivan,
Do you want the users to download the files via ftp or
would it be just password protected pages on the site
itself.
The ftp option might be easier but it depends on what
features your web hosting company provides. For the
other option, i'm guessing you will need a back-end
language (asp/php/coldfusion etc.) and a database.
I'm more of a designer than a developer so hopefully
some of the other uses of this group will respond with
some further information.

http://mail.yahoo.com
HI everyone.
didnt know about this yahoo group until someone mentioned it in
another group yesterday.
looking for answers to the following....
--------------
Can anyone give me an idea how to accomplish this....
I want to put files on my website but i want only certain people to
acces these files. I am guessing some sort of user logon is required
here.
Anyone knows of a free file manager script that will allow me to
create users and have a holding area to upload files?
Thanks

Hits or misses
By Gregory M. Lamb | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
You know that computers run the Internet. You know computers are efficient and
flawless counting machines. Conclusion: Internet websites must know with
excruciating accuracy who is visiting them. Right?
Surprising as it may seem, most websites have no idea how many people view their
content. This inherent fuzziness is causing problems for commercial websites,
especially online publications desperate to make money from Internet
advertising.

Colleagues,
Thanks for informing the misguided Dr.Zobby. The site
is huge...but it is my personal portfolio, it uses
flash and hopefully the splash page would explain that
to other paranoid visitors :)

Zobby,
The website-which is brilliant-uses Flash. Hence the 'transferring
data like crazy away'.
Your insinuation that the site is anything less than a superb
artistic effort is quite ridiculous. Implying that there is improper
data being transferred is also highly foolish.
I can see why you wouldn't want to sign your true name to this sort
of insipid commentary.

Thanks for taking the time to look at and comment on the second version of my site. I'm trying my best to implement all of the suggested changes.
Lorenzo, i know that the load time is long and that excludes people who are not very patient, but this time i did not want to sacifice quality.
In the portfolio, some of the web items are still under development by their respected developers, i'll add the link to the actual site as soon as possible also i added descriptions to the actual buttons, some of the work was done as concepts in photoshop but were never sliced etc, i did think about it but whats to stop some enterprising trini from replacing some text and the logo and getting the site for free :)
Ryan, I reviewed the site again. The comments/descriptions you added to your portfolio items made things much clearer. I understand your concerns about the "enterprising trini". :) That's a risk in the web sphere. Btw, piracy is not a trini thing... it's global. Thought I should mention that.
For the concept display though, consider the purpose of it. Do you wish to display the design only? If so, the still image will suffice. It'll only exhibit your graphic design skills though. If, however, you want to demonstrate your web skills (Flash, HTML, and so on), then the stills wouldn't do you justice. You may consider having a private zone on your site that allows "screened" visitors (people you allow) to see your stuff at work. Clients usually want to see the functionality that completes the interface. That's a major concern for them.
In the end, you own the choice. Consider your objectives always. Never divorce design from purpose.
Take care. Lorenzo

Ryan,
Lorenzo did a good job with his dose of constructive criticism. I must say
though, your Flash skill is quite impressive.

Ryan, Good job. Your work is very distinct. I see Graphic design ability is well displayed. I like the theme, the color scheme. Undoubtedly, you're a designer. Your Flash also deserves commendation.
This design is graphically more appealing than version1, but Version 1 uses space much better. The load time on your site isn't very good. I use DSL and had to wait a long time for the home page to load, then for each of the detailed drill-downs to load. My comments are based on a comparison with similar sites. I guess you tried not to compromise on the quality of images. That's really a matter of choice, but bear in mind that there's a cost attached to each choice.
I'd also like to see links to to actual websites in your portfolio. You have Flash and Web design in the same category but didn't specify which ones were just Flash and which were web. Perhaps you can add some notation or icon.
But generally, I like it. Big up de man from Arima. I trust my comments have been useful. Be encouraged.

Hey guys, I’m moving back to Trinidad
in August to further my education. As such, my company has a vacancy for my
position, that of the Information Technologist, which anyone who is a citizen
of a CDERA participating state (which Trinidad
is) is eligible to apply. Details at the above link.
I must admit, working in a regional organization such as
this is a definite learning experience, and the breadth of work involved is
enough experience for anyone who claims to love to keep busy to be taken to
task on, so if any of you are interested, please feel free to check out the
link to see if you qualify and apply as you see fit. Deadline is May 5th.

Your site works fine man.. And I have a TSTT account. Viewed using Safari on
a Mac.
What you should do is check your html tags and see if the entire document is
balanced. Sometimes if you miss a closing </table> or closing </html>, the
browser is unforgiving and shows up blank... Other than that I am lost for
suggestions.
