Subject: Optical Isolation Boards Liquidation

Back in January I had offered some free kits to test an optical isolation
board we were developing. Since then I have learned a lot of
respect for the other kit manufacturers. It is hard work and they do a
good job.

The kit business has not gone so well for us, so we are
liquidating the remaining inventory.

The board is based on a Lumex PCT4116/E opto coupler chip.
Digikey part: 67-1562-5-ND.

The kits connect a db25 connector to a db25 connector.
(Parallel port)

These boards ARE NOT suitable for servo motors as the minimum
pulse width is 25us. (Servos require much faster)

If your controller requires a faster pulse than 25us, they won't
work for controller your steppers either...but maybe they have
another use!

We are selling bare boards to completed kits.

You can see pictures at:
http://www.chaski.com/opto/

On-line ordering as at:
http://chaskitools.mybisi.com/

Thank you for your consideration.

Hi guys,

I'm getting close to having this machine running great.

Can someone who uses CamBAM answer a question for me? I can't seem to find the
info I need on the intertubes.

CamBAM has a setting under machining options for Default, Exact stop, and
Constant Velocity modes. I have found that the current version of TCNC does not
support CV. CamBAM when using Exact stop, CamBAM generates a G61 at the start of
the file, which TCNC says is unsupported.

What should I use in CamBAM?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Are you using the Turbocnc Post Processor?
This appears under 'Machining' 'PostProcessor'
By default it uses a default post processor which uses CV as standard.
If you use the Turbocnc post processor it will not generate these errors.
You can also modify the PostProcessor file easily to suit your personal
preferences.

Cheers
Peter

Hi,

I am going to start a small CNC project where I will use floppy drive
electronics controller for stepper motors. However, there are some things to
discus. Here I will have to use 2 to 3 meter of wire between computer &
controller OR between controller & stepper motors. I think to use these wire
lengths between computer & controller may weaken the electronic signals. Is that
true?
Motor in floppy drive run on 5 DC Volt. But I want to use 9.5 or big DC volt
motor instead of floppy drive’s small motor and it require more power. Is
there any other custom way to provide additional DC electric power externally to
motor?

Regard,'

You need to look at the web and find some good chips. I believe these motors
from Floppies are Bipolar (check first how many connections, 4 is Bipolar, more
is Unipolar) so you will need to find chips for Bipolar, NOT Unipolar. Unipolar
motors can be driven by either sort of chips, but not Bipolar......

Then you need to decide how you are going to connect, if distance is a real
worry, I would say a serial connection might be best....serial interfaces are
around, but less often than Paralle, which you can even build yourself....BUT:-

I do not know how far the printer port interfaces can drive, certainly 3 - 4
meters should not be a problem I feel.....I have used parallel printers at that
distance......and also my own homebuilt CNC under testing only at this time....

I have no personal experience of USB connections for CNC over such a distance,
but I cannot believe that it will error.....

If you are trying to decide where you should use the long cables, I would use
an extra long printer cable. The interface can support cable lengths up to
about 10 meters without degradation. Just make sure you use a good quality
shielded cable as you do not want to pick up any interference.

I don't think that there is a way to easily increase the stepper motor drive
voltage and current from a floppy drive controller. In theory you could send
the signals through an amplifier before reaching the drives but amplifiers also
amplify noise and are costly. The money you spend trying to do this would be
better spent on buying the necessary stepper driver but that's my opinion.

Can someone help me set up the home switches on my machine? I tried to get pin
10 on the printer port assigned to the home switch for my "X" axis. Pin 10 is
pulled to + 5v with a 10k resistor. In Turbocnc, I tried setting the line as
active high and low but that made no difference. I also changed the Home
direction between positive and negative but when pin 10 is shorted to ground,
the x axis does not stop. Have I missed something?

Rod,
Not trying to belittle you, but are you sure:
1. You have "Enabled" the switch in the configuration file?
2. You have the correct I/O port selected?
3. You save the configuration file?
4. You reset the ports before trying?
Have to ask, because I had some of the same things happen back when I
set mine up.
Assuming you have all of this correct, use the Active Ports function
to verify the operation of the switch. Press F2 to open the ports
and then <Alt>+F2 to make it active. Notice the color (on my screen,
it is either green or yellow) now short the pin to ground and see if
it changes color. If not, then you have possibly a port problem as it
is not working. NOTE: do not press any keys while in active mode as
it could cause things to happen that you do not want. Press <ALT>+F2
again to make it passive. Pressing F2 again will clear the Ports screen.
If you have a bad port pin, you might try another one! Also, make
sure you are using a good ground for your testing.

Install parmon.exe on your system. This will allow you to check that the
line is actually toggling. Then do a check on turbocnc by pressing F2. It
shows at bottom screen.

Make sure you have the correct port selected in the setup for I/O. It's the
most likely problem.

Hi guys. I'm a registered owner and user of the dos version. I use it for lathe
use as well as mill work. I have downloaded the newer windows version when it
first came out but never went past looking at the various screens. It does look
nice but I've been waiting for some feedback before spending time configuring it
to work on my system. Also I was wondering if those of us that paid for the dos
version get the windows version for free or at a reduced cost? $100.00 seems
like a lot of money to shell out when the dos version does most of the things I
like. I've been to the version 5 forum but didn't find any information comparing
the likes and dislikes from the previous versions. You guys have anything to
add?

I'm curious about the Windows version's performance as well. The
difficulty in building a controller that works well under Windows is
developing a port I/O driver that becomes part of the kernel so it can
perform actual I/O functions and also making that driver respond in
real time even when Windows is performing its internal housekeeping.

I doubt that there's a reduction in price for registered DOS users
since I believe that a different person developed the Windows version
based on the original DOS code (and, it may include a lot of the DOS
source) with Dave's blessing.

If the windows version works well, the $100 cost is quite fair -
neither a gift nor ridiculously priced - but I'd take a good look at
Mach which has a multiple year successful track record. Or, move to
Ubuntu Linux and run EMC at no cost.

Brad,

I have been very happy with the dos version for years. Granted the screen
graphics are dull, but would take a lot of brute force to force me to deal

I've been watching it as well, every now and then going to the AST site. It
seems to have some support in Brazil. There are forums in other lanuages,
and there has been an update to the original release.

It's a bit like everbody wanting to go for a swim, but waiting for somone
else to get in first. AST should have an intro price special, so a following
can be collected.

Hi guys,

I tried the Windows version, and there are quite a lot of
loose ends yet to be implemented, not to mention, no manual!

I contacted Dave (at DAK Engineering) directly regarding
this issue, and I did not come away with
a comfortable feeling about this Windows port. I do not
want to speak for Dave, so I'd *strongly* suggest you
contact Dave yourself before purchasing the Windows
version.

Rod,
It on the "Configure" list near the bottom.
Make sure you save the configuration before you reset the ports. One
person was doing it in reverse and wondered why it never worked!

Also Setup only one axis at a time. I just happened to think, there
is/was a bug in the routine listed on the jogging screen. I use MDI
and enter G28 and the axis desired. Example G28 X0.

my z & y axis's are 14 pitch and my x is 13 pitch. I calculated them as
.0000357143 & .000384615 respectively. I'm using gecko 201's & 10 micro steps
directly connected to the motor 1:1. My x-axis is moving .5 inch when I tell it
to move 1 inch. I don't know how to fix it, any suggestions. Don't know if it
is a bug or something I'm doing wrong.

barclaygeo,

I am not going to run your numbers but if the X is only moving 1/2 of what
is expected try doubling the number in set-up.
I seldom use built in step size wizards. Pencil, calculator and doing it
enough times so that the numbers come out the same (and half way make
sense)
I don't suspect a bug, just that for me it is often difficult to figure out
what the questions mean.

Do you happen to have radius set up as for lathe?

I have had the same problem in the past the only way I could fix it is to have
the x axis and y axis the same. The mfg of the software I was using suggested
it had to do with the timeing involved with the combined movement with both
axis. The z axis is a seperate movement so it didn't matter.

Hi,
is all software affected in this manner, that the X & Y must be the same
pitch? I have a feeling that EMC2 can be set up with different values (only read
the documentation some months ago, an EMC2 user would be far better to ask!)

Also the software for an SMC stepper card can have each axis with a different
thread.....(but that software ONLY works with SMC cards from Germany).....I can
fully believe that many softwares cannot handle that though......

No criticism, but why would one have different threads on the X & Y axis??
That comes as a bit unlogical/impractical to me.......but I am a newbie
too.......On my first (and only finished!) machine I have used the same thread
on all 3 axis......that appealed to me at the time! I will continue to do that
on all future machines too....

   Best Regards

   Andy

Has anyone setup TurboCNC to work with the G540 controller? The G540 requires
turning on EPP (enhanced parallel port or bidirectional parallel port) in the
computer's BIOS. That allows the G540 to talk to the computer for software
emergency stop and soft limits. Does TurboCNC naturally accept input from its
controller hardware? If not, is there a hot-fix or other method to make this
work? Thank you.

Setting the parallel port up as EPP is quite simple. If you check out the
initial setup manual on geckos homepage, it says how to do so right there.

I believe you are talking about the watchdog. TurboCNC does not have a watchdog
feature, so you will have to switch that off in the G540. I just checked the
initial setup manual, and it states that there is a switch under the cover of
the G540. You will have to open it up and disable the watchdog.

Soft limits? TCNC does not have that. Don't know if mach does either. TCNC
checks the parallel port inputs naturally. Should not be any problem.
