Subject: mason, or mod_perl freezing?
valmasj
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

another issue that I have been running into on my machine, is mason or
mod_perl freezing up. whenever I play a song, and go back to play
another song, tvdinner is frozen. If i open a new window, apache will
serve up other directories, directory listings, etc. But whether i am
just navigating around tvdinner's interface or trying to play a song,
it wont respond.

Once i just left it trying to load the link i clicked on to see if it
would time out or give me an error. I dont know how long it tried, but
i came home to a page could not be displayed IE error. so i hit back
just for fun, and its like it was back to normal, and i could pick
another song. its not my latest attempt with php, because it did it on
the last machine. Maybe running mason 1.28 and mod_perl 1.29 isnt such
a good idea? any help would be appreciated.

thanks
josh

Ok I have a good one for you now. I am trying to add some PHP stuff in
on the same server that hosts tvdinner. I am in the process of
building a new server on Fedora Core 3, and am thus far successful with
tvdinner. However, if I try to do anything in PHP, apache treats it
like an unknown file and just gives me a download prompt.

If I comment out my tvdinner.conf/mason.conf include files it works
fine. I dont know that mod_perl works, cause i have nothing else
besides tvdinner to test it with. But PHP starts handling PHP files.
I tried to add "php" and "PHP" to the bottom of the Mason Conf file but
it didnt seem to phase the problem at all. so far the only way I have
gotten it to work is by commenting out the conf files all together.
Hopeing you have a great idea you can pass me to get them both to play
nicely.

thanks josh.

Awesome! Glad to hear that you finally got your setup fixed! So do you
have the most recent version (0.5.1)?

Be sure to try out the "amazon_image" program to collect album covers for
your collection. That makes the "album listing" look really sweet!

I DID IT!!

heres what the deal was. I tried like 500 different compilations of
apache and mod_perl using apache toolbox, and most of them worked as
far as serving up pages was concerned.

last time it did work, i compiled apache and mod_perl together
manually, so i decided to do that again this time. by golly that was
it-works like a charm now. I dont know if it was the mod_perl rev that
was holding it up (v1.28(toolbox) vs. v1.29(downloaded)) or just the
way apachetoolbox brings them together. i donno.

regardless its back and work, and forgive me for bugging you, i
understand being swamped.

That's a good idea -- the only issue is that the primary table has a bunch
of customized fields for MP3's. At this point, it wouldn't be too hard to
build a system to support photos, video, etc. but there would have to be
modifications made to existing table strutures and code.

I was thinking of adding the ability to add internet radio stations into
the database. Sound like a good feature?

Yes, and my apologies for not getting back to you. I've been swamped

I have been trying to come up with some more good ideas for
additions/improvements, and I was thinking, why stop at MP3's? Seems
like all the structural stuff is in stone, so it might not be to hard
to hand in functionality to stream certain video types, and maybe even
custom photo albums that can be personalized/shared.

Did you get my last email with my system info?

the other place i found within tools was tools/download. changed it
in both places, and when i try to download, it gives me cannot be
found, and when i do play, it gives me cannot be displayed. (error
msg's). just say the word and ill start rebuilding, this is what i
get for trying to be at the latest and greatest of apache/mod_perl.
I must say though, the server is no longer going out to lunch like it
was before, just cant play anything =). If you have any more ideas,
please dont hesitate to offer.

Hmmm...this I'm not sure of. There's probably a setting somewhere, not
sure. I'll see what I can dig up.

I think this is a bug I accidentally introduced in 0.5. The problem is
with the Mason $m->redirect -- I used to have my own. Well, when I made
the change to the new way of doing things, it stopped working. The
work-around: go back to the old way. Here's what you need to change:

In tools/play

Change the following:

   # now do the redirect
   $m->redirect($url);

to

   $m->comp("$gConf->{interfaceroot}/tools/redirect", url=>$url);

There may be another place where the new redirect is used, I'll look or
you can grep for it.

I seem to have everything working again, back with apache 1.3 and mod
perl 1.x. all my cpan modules went in perfect no hiccups. physical
locations of everything is:

/www (Document Root)
/www/tvdinner
/www/mp3
/usr/local/apache (apache installed)

Config:
[root@205hotspot tools]# ./configtest.pl
TVDinner Configuration Test

conf->{mp3_database} = mp3
conf->{interfaceroot} = /tvdinner
conf->{defaultorder} = artist,album,track,title
conf->{lite} = HASH(0x810fbf8)
conf->{mp3_host} = localhost
conf->{mp3_user} = tvdinner
conf->{session_pass} = auth
conf->{webroot} =
conf->{allowstream} = 1
conf->{allowdownload} = 1
conf->{session_host} = localhost
conf->{mp3hardpath} = /www/mp3

conf->{iconized} = 0
conf->{mp3webroot} = /mp3
conf->{mp3_pass} = tvdinner
conf->{defaultdispcol} = artist,album,track,title,duration,comment
conf->{tvdinnerver} = 0.5
conf->{session_database} = auth
conf->{webhardpath} = /www
[root@205hotspot tools]#

What I think is happening is perl related. Back when I was
attempting Apache 2, I had to upgrade, well, install the latest
version of perl, 5.8. So now I have two versions of perl installed,
5.6 and 5.8. From what I have read this isnt a problem. If I do a
perl -v 5.8 comes back. However when I compile TVDinner's config and
install it, they get pushed to the 5.6 side of things, and i have to
copy the *.pm's to the proper location in 5.8.

Symptoms are as follows: Everything seems to navigate without
incident. When I try to play something, I get a page cannot be
displayed error message. The apache will freeze until i restart it.
Thats all the info I can think to give, feel free to ask for more.

Thanks for the help,
Josh

Yeah, one of these days I'll get around to testing that configuration. I
know there are issues with Apache2 and mod_perl2 outside of TVDinner.

This wouldn't be a huge effort, but I'm torn about allowing it. Maybe it's
because I never really "upload" MP3's from the web interface. I have a
drive shared that I dump into and then I run the "collect" script. Perhaps
if I had a good case for it...

> And now that pictures are allowed, uploading of those as well.

This I could see. Except I just use the "AmazonImage" tool (which is
packaged with the distribution.) The problem you'll run into with that is
image sizing.

> Another feature that might prove useful is some TAG editing tools, if

There are two that come with TVDinner (mp3tag.pl and mp3set.pl) although
they only set ID3V1 tags. I haven't gotten around to ID3V2 tags yet
although there is limited support for it. The web interface also allows
you to edit. Batch wise, there is the "reversewrite.pl" tool that will
take entried from the database and write them to the MP3's ID3V1 tags.

One feature I'd like to get around to adding is the ability to run the
"collect" script from the web interface. That way, I don't have to log
into my box to add new tunes. Of course, I don't really add a whole lot
anymore (I'm already up to 35GB - 6868 titles).

Soon, you'll see interface changes. I'm trying to come up with a simpler
interface to use in conjunction with my "bar soundsystem" project.

Thanks for the input!

I had a working server, but then desiring the latest of everything, I
set out to get AP2+MP2 working with the latest tvdinner. Needless to
say I've wasted countless hours trying to cabbage everything
together. Im so turned around now im about ready to rebuild from

Not really interested in that feature, not to crush a dream or
anything. I was trying to think up something that I would really
want to see, is maybe some more tools. I noticed on of the items on
the feature list was upload functionality which is something I have
always wanted. And now that pictures are allowed, uploading of those
as well. Another feature that might prove useful is some TAG editing
tools, if thats even possible. Right now I use

http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html

which is extremely powerful, and the best I have used yet, especially
batch wise. Ill try to sleep on it some more to see if I can come up
with anything else, but for now heres my 2 cents =).

THanks,

I'm considering adding a feature that will allow servers to "hook up" and
stream from each other and wanted to know if that was even something that
people want.

Otherwise, what feature would you *most* like to see added?

You may want to subscribe to the Mason mailing list. I believe there are
some known problems with Apache/MP2 -> Mason integration.

As for the version -- I have a local "bleeding edge" version that fixes a
couple of problems, but nothing *too* different from what's on SF.

Hey Sean et al.

I'm finally getting around to implementing TVDinner... but I figured I'ld
try to port it to Apache2/mod_perl2 at the same time just to make life
difficult.

Anyone ran it on MP2 yet?

I was doing ok, but I keep getting segfaults. I think they are coming from
DBD::mysql but i'm not sure.

Is there a CVS version that I should be running instead of the most recent
release on the web page? I'll probably end up submitting a ton of patches.

Thanks,
-m

The .comp files are all in here in the various subdirs.

You don't need to set this all the way down to the TVDinner directory.
You'll probably want this to be just "/home/www/data/". I think this is
the cause of your problems.

It's looking for the /tvdinner/tools/redirect component in
"/home/www/data/tvdinner/tvdinner/tools/redirect".

Someone please give me a sanity check. :)

In the mason.conf file ...

   my $root = '/usr/local/etc/apache';
I set this to my apache conf directory, and created a mason directory within
it... stuff is getting written there and Mason is running (barely) so I presume
this is correct. This jives with the Mason docs I looked up.

my $htmlroot = "/home/www/data/tvdinner";

I set this to the hard path to where the tvdinner html files are installed. The
.comp files are all in here in the various subdirs.

This all seems right to me, but I am still getting a Mason error whey I try to
use tvdinner.

could not find component for path '/tvdinner/tools/redirect'

What I can't figure out is this: is the error message saying that it can't find
/tvdinner/tools/redirect, or is some component referenced in the redirect not
being found?

I am installing tvdinner in a subdirectory of my web docroot, eg:

http://domain.com/tvdinner

I know I am getting close, Mason is running and the system is trying to redirect
to the auth page. (Even if I try hitting a Mason test file in /tvdinner, it
tries to redirect, which seems correct.)

However, redirection fails:
error: could not find component for path '/tvdinner/tools/redirect'

This is probably because I am not sure how to set up my paths in Conf.pm.

$App::TVDinner::Conf::conf->{webroot}
Is this the URL of my tvdinner installation, ie '/tvdinner' ?

$App::TVDinner::Conf::conf->{mp3webroot}
I have no idea what this is. (Note that my MP3s are NOT stored with my web docs,
I hope this is OK)

$App::TVDinner::Conf::conf->{interfaceroot}
I'm not sure what this is asking for.

$App::TVDinner::Conf::conf->{webhardpath}
I am assuming this is the *filesystem* path to the TVdinner files, ie
'/home/www/data/tvdinner'

$App::TVDinner::Conf::conf->{mp3hardpath}
I am assuming this is the *filesystem* path to the media files, ie '/home/mp3'

Thanks!

To fix that (temporarily), comment out lines 166-169:

     #$insert_sql = "insert into user_prefs (username) values (?)";
     #$insert_sth = $gdbh->prepare($insert_sql);
     #$insert_sth->bind_param(1,$ARGS{username});
     #$res = $insert_sth->execute;

I made a change to the way preferences worked and forgot to change the
adduser function. Whoops! I will note it as a bug and fix it.

Uh...ahem...I, uh...left an extra character in the URL:

   /tvdinner/display/album/list_all_albumes.html
                                         ^

DOH! Line 43 in /display/album/index.html needs to be fixed. It should
read:

     $alphalinks = qq(<a
href="$gConf->{interfaceroot}/display/album/list_all_albums.html"
target="albums">All</a> | );

My mistake!

really like the new changes, especially to the layout. I am having a
couple of problems with it though, one of which is new, the other
happened in .4 and has always been like this. Everytime i try to add
a new user i get the following mason error:

error:  DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Table 'mp3.user_prefs' doesn't
exist at /www/tvdinner/system/adduser.html line 169.

context:  ...
165: # nice to have right about now!)
166:  $insert_sql = "insert into user_prefs (username) values (?)";
167:  $insert_sth = $gdbh->prepare($insert_sql);
168:  $insert_sth->bind_param(1,$ARGS{username});
169:  $res = $insert_sth->execute;
170:  }
171:
172:  $sql = "select id, username, password, fullname, perm_access,
perm_stream,
173:  perm_download, perm_edit, perm_upload, perm_system,
...

code stack:  /www/tvdinner/system/adduser.html:169
/www/tvdinner/system/autohandler:2
/www/tvdinner/autohandler:25

i tried changing some thing myself, but i just seem to break it
worse. the weird part is, that it actually creates the record in the
database. and works 100%. I just have to restart apache in to get
mason to unfreeze after that error, and all is well with the world.
i can also delete and edit each user, as well as change the
passwords. seems to be just the add user function blows up, but
works, all at the same time

the other problem i was having with only the new version, is that
when i click on the albums tab it switches to that page, but the all
function seems to be broken. if i look at them catagorized by
letter/number it works fine. but as soon as i click the all option,
screen goes blank. i think the interface is very very snazy, and
love the new layout for browsing albums.

Over the past few months, I've been working to improve the interface to
TVDinner. I've grown tired of the same old boring colors, so I've spruced
it up a bit. In addition to that, I added support for album covers and
gave TVDinner a brushed metal theme.

Also: I noticed in the last version that the "Play Selected" button didn't
work quite right, neither did "Shuffle" or "Play Recursive" in the Artist
and Album screens. That's now corrected. Playlists are a little stronger
than they were before and now heavy pages (like Arist and Album listings)
cache themselves.

You can download the new version from my site:

That points pretty much to Apache::Session::MySQL. I've noticed while
coding and debugging that when a page crashes with a Mason error, I have
to clear the cookie in my browser in order to get it to work again. The
browser will just sit there until it times out.

not sure if it changes the scenario any, but i previously said that
restarting mysql did the trick. which is true under the old version,
restarting apache is actually what fixes the problem in this
version. just figured id clarify that.
thanks

I use MySQL for all of my websites (at least Apache::Session) so I think
my database never sleeps. The only different thing I do to start is set
the max connections higher:

    /usr/local/bin/safe_mysqld -O max_connections=200 &

I will look around, though I'm pretty sure it's an Apache::Session::MySQL
problem. More than likely a configuration setting.

no, its never actually dropped out completly. sometimes i can
refresh a billion times and it will come back to life, in a very
unstable state though (goes out to lunch frequently). once i restart
mysql though everything is wonderful.

heres my ps:

Hmmm...looks like a problem with Apache::Session. Is your MySQL process
complete gone (from ps for example)?

I'll see what I can dig up.

for some reason, if i let tvdinner sit around ahwhile, when i finaly
go to connect to it i get the following error:

error: DBD::mysql::st execute failed: MySQL server has gone away

i actually have to login and restart the database and apache before
it will decide to start working again. is there a reason/way around
this? after ahwhile it gets a little tedious
thanks

that was it. apache::mp3 was installed, but this file was using
App::TVDinner::MP3, and the alias was incorrect for me. once i
adjusted those, streaming and downloading works great.

it seems i have some duplicate entries in places, and the potential
duplicate count = 39. however if i click that number it flips me to
the screen but doesnt list anything. by duplicates im referring to 2
duplicate (in name, track, time, etc) entries under the album. one
works, the other goes to "page cannot be displayed". wondering how i
could fix this.

now that its working, i have been adding in some users. i keep
getting this error:

System error

error: DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Unknown column 'username'
in 'field list' at /www/tvdinner/system/adduser.html line 169.

context:  ...
165: # nice to have right about now!)
166:  $insert_sql = "insert into prefs (username) values (?)";
167:  $insert_sth = $gdbh->prepare($insert_sql);
168:  $insert_sth->bind_param(1,$ARGS{username});
169:  $res = $insert_sth->execute;
170:  }
171:
172:  $sql = "select id, username, password, fullname, perm_access,
perm_stream,
173:  perm_download, perm_edit, perm_upload, perm_system,
...

code stack:  /www/tvdinner/system/adduser.html:169
/www/tvdinner/system/autohandler:2
/www/tvdinner/autohandler:23

if i restart apache, and then go back to the users list, the user has
been added. it also seems i can delete, and edit users without
seeing an error.

thanks for all the help,
i really like this thing

Check the permissions on your /mp3 diretory -- make sure that Apache has
permissions to read the files. Also, make sure you have the following in
your tvdinner.conf:

   # stream/download/playlist MP3 handler
   Alias /mp3 /mp3

   <Location /mp3>
     SetHandler perl-script
     PerlHandler Apache::MP3
   </Location>

Do you have Apache::MP3 installed? What URL is it trying to use to stream
the files?

that took care of me for the login side of things. however i still
have one remaining problem, and thats downloading/playing songs. im
sure its a permission issue, but ive tried just about everything i
can think of. i have everything set to be owned:group
nobody:nobody. im not sure if this is the right way to do it or not,
but thats what i was using before i believe (apache runs as nobody).
i tried fooling with recompiling mp3 root, and hard paths, but that
didnt seem to do anything. (i did it twice, the second time
remembering to restart apache in between). so im not sure what it
could be, it just constantly gives me "page cannot be displayed".

im at a loss and open for ideas. =/

Ok. Looks like there's something wrong with the way the $limit variable
coming in is handled. It's passing it to the query as a string when it
should be a numeric. Hence the problem with limit = '10'. SO, to
temporarily correct it on your system until I come up with the param to
force numeric, use this code in link_table.comp:

   $list_sql = "select d.id, d.artist, d.album, d.title, p.comment
                from directory d, playlists p, playlist_idx pi
                where (d.id = p.dir_id)
                  and (pi.id = p.list_id)
                  and (pi.listname = ?)
                  and ((pi.username='$session{tvd_u}->{username}') or
                      (pi.flag_private = 0))
                order by p.create_dt DESC
                limit $limit";
   $list_sth = $gdbh->prepare($list_sql);
   $list_sth->bind_param(1,$listname);

Note that I removed the second bind_param.

Whoops. More legacy code -- just remove that block that deletes
"user_prefs. I'm also making the change for version 0.4.3. Thanks for
catching that. (I love having testers!)

I agree -- I also have a GMail account and the threaded message view
feature is very nice. The only thing I can't seem to get used to is the
lack of folders -- you can make "labels", but it still doesn't feel the
same.

I have 3 invites if anyone is interested.
