Welcome aboard the ship Raghu!
Are you 'emacs' or 'nuts' ?
and do you wear long slacks (like the rappers) ? :-))
[humorous pun on 'editor' and 'slackware' intended]
Why don't you apply some patches, so that we get
stable and start 'twincling' ?
Have a nice day!

Is somebody from OUTeam looking at the event sponsor issue ?
Perhaps Vijay or another member of the OU Team can update
on this matter.

hi guys!!!
i was out of station yesterday and i cld not reply to any of
ur mails. regarding the event nice inputs from all the ends. the
inputs from martin are good and regarding the speakers i spoke tariq
and i cld not get positive reponse from his end as he is busy with a
conf in mumbai on the same days and he said i am sorry i cld not
make up for the event and he said if he can try for some and get
back to me, but there was no reply from his end. i had seen namita
mail abt the institute, i too heard and that guy is from LUG i hope
so, i met him long ago in LUG he said he runs a institute in
Ameerpet which deals with PHP and stuff ans so i had posted a mail
in our UG group abt the thing and asked him to contact me. i hope we
can get some postive reply from that end and regarding the goodies
to be given away we need some sponsors, so can we speak to
ramkrsihna or ganesh (virtusa) if they can give some sponsorship. i
hope already the OU guys visited virtusa and what is reply from
their end. lets us try and if we can get some help we can do that
and we can think of it. one more important thing is i mailed to
negi. we need to take his appointment and we atleast 4 or 5 guys go
and meet negi and inform him what is all happening and we need to
take inputs from his end as he is the main person behind LUG hyd we
also need to take this confirmation for his delivery and we need to
speak to him a lot of things so it is better we get his appointment
we need to speak to him first and take his suggestions and guidance
and then go a head with the work. i am free and i am not going to
office today as i took off regarding my personal work and if u guys
need any help and i will be in touc with u guys get back to me if u
need any help from my end.
have a nice day!

Students are supposed to register themselves for the
event in advance. So we can make our arrangements for
the event.
Also there will be a limited number of copies of
knoppix, if we get them written.
Can we write a large number of cds or get them
printed? we need to think about this issue as well.
suggestions are welcome.

To make up the cost of the cds distributed and
prizes, we are thinking of nominal entry fee for this
event.
We also need "event sponsors" for LUG FESTIVA.

Ive got a copy of Knoppix 3.4 which was distributed as part of
Software Freedom Day on October 2, 2004. It has their logo on that, so
I dont think its possible to distribute that. Ive started the download
and still 44 hours to go to finish download, so anybody with better
internet connection kindly download :P.

I think Vijay is the right person to answer this question.
I had one more doubt regarding the event, which is, does the event
have free entry or do we charge a minimal amount for entry.

Martin.

I am interested in moderating the group.
And we need to invite ppl to join this group.
And regarding schedule :
As some events are to be finalised i cannot give u
the total schedule of two events.
But LUG FESTIVA will be on Saturday Feb 19th 9.00 am
to 1.00 pm.
And regarding systems we need to get the permission
of head of the dept. Thats not a problem, so i'll let
u know when he comes back.( He's on leave ).

We have P4 machines in our lab , all these have enough Ram 128 MB ,
and 20 GB harddisk . There are around 40 machines like these and
more over the lab would be very good for hands on experience . Plz do
not worry abt the computers and any resources . We can chalk out any
plan if we really need something . And what happened to event
sponsor - Reliance ????

Vijay, we will need a machine on which we can test
out dual booting, installation and running of the
software and demo programs.
Would it be possible for you to arrange it so we can
try out stuff on it over the weekend ?

. Live CD of knoppix (as take aways).
. focussed question asked after every session + prize
Lets incorporate this, in the plan.
Who has knoppix live-cd?
How many copies do we need to make of knoppix ?

Problem Description:
A vulnerability was discovered in the CRAM-MD5 authentication in UW-IMAP where,
on the fourth failed authentication attempt, a user would be able to access the
IMAP server regardless. This problem exists only if you are using CRAM-MD5
authentication and have an /etc/cram-md5.pwd file. This is not the default
setup.

Yes, I agree that there should be some take-aways (could be a
knoppix distro or some easy distro of Linux, which is available as a
live-cd so that students can try out on their system without taking up
space on their hard disk).
Regarding quizzes, if it is just 1 question asked after every
session (or something similar) and a free prize given for the right
answer, then lets go on with the idea.

span more than 45 minutes ( in general).

and the solutions possible.

Alternatively, since the LUG Festiva is more of a workshop,
we could have a LAMP workshop with hands on LAMP programming.
This way the students get to see how it works.

1 Workshop (1.5hrs)
3 Talks (2.5hrs) so we have 45-50 min / talk.

Hi Sasi:
Thanks. Good that you talked with Tariq.
Now we know we need to look elsewhere.
Lets see if we can find somebody in Hyderabad itself.
I recently saw an Ascent ad. in which Satyam was hiring guys
knowledgeable about LAMP.
Do you know anybody in Satyam ?
Does TCS do any work on LAMP platform ?
--
thanks
Saifi Khan.
Hi:
First the background:
During the discussions undertaken yesterday (01/02/2005),
the idea of presenting talks, hands-on session etc.
weaved with a 'theme' was mooted.
The proposed strategy is as follows:
. encouraged to try out Linux on their existing machines
. explained how linux boots and what happens at boot time,
. then the FOSS (Free Open Source Software) solutions stack is presented
. the webservices solutions stack based on LAMP is presented.
The students see a unified picture and have a certain 'concrete' takehome
message and action plan.
The total time as suggested by Vijay is about 4 hours.
The talks/workshop is presented as follows:
1. Linux Booting (how it does, what happens) GRUB [talk]
2. Make a dual/multiboot machine + linux install [workshop]
3. FOSS solutions stack, the present + future [talk]
4. WebServices solutions stack based on LAMP [talk]
We need to have speakers from the industry and a _tentative_ list of names
was drawn up as follows:
1. GRUB talk - Namita, Ganesh
2. multiboot workshop - Namita, Ganesh, Saifi
3. FOSS solutions stack talk - Atul Negi, Sashidhar
4. LAMP talk - Martin, Tariq Sani
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
---------
ACTION PLAN and Action items.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
----------
1. We need to brainstorm on this theme and identify the content that
goes as part of the delivery.
2. Create a delivery template for all the talks to be given.
(approx flow for a topic, 12-15 slides max for 45 min. talk + 15 min.
for questions)
3. Come up with ideas to make the talks interactive.
4. Come up with ideas to give small demos, screenshots etc. to give a
more realistic picture and utilize the visual bandwidth of the audience.
5. Demo deliverables for The Multiboot workshop, distros to try out with
Win98,XP,2000 combinations.
6. A multiboot checklist to be given to the audience attending the event.
7. LAMP technology illustrations, who uses it e.g. BSNL, AIRTEL etc. in
India, why do people use it, webservices stack, technology highlight
8. Linux value proposition, Linux software solutions stack,
current trends and what to expect in the future.
9. Sashi will be sound out Atul Negi and Tariq Sani for the talks and
their availability.
10. Outstation speaker management, stay arrangment, transportation
and facilities arrangement.
11. Precise information collection about the venue facilities and ensuring
that Linux/FOSS speakers give presentations on Linux machines only.
Dual display problems to be resolved.

Hi:
While most 'twincling' members have known each othe for quite sometime,
I met some of you only recently (29/01/2005).
So, its appropriate to introduce myself.
I have been associated with Linux software, computing and programming
since 1994 (10 years).
Started using Linux at IISc, Bangalore, while doing my M.S. in
Computer Simulations (Condensed Matter Phys and Chem)(1994-97).
Maintained and Programmed on Linux systems while working in the IT industry
since 1997 in Infosys (Bangalore,Pune), Cognizant (Pune), E-Lock (Pune)
and RECOMBINANT (Pune).
Some of the areas of Linux I have worked with are netfilter, iptables, grub,
kernel device drivers, gnome (build, packaging) and developing security
solutions using the Linux security services stack.
My interest is to work with like minded people to promote and develop
using linux and FOSS based technologies and explore busines opportunities!
Thanks for your time.

Hi:
To ensure better organization, increased focus and greater agility,
we have two moderators for twincling.
1. Sasidhar Kalagara
2. P. Martin Samuel Rao
Given both Sasi's contacts and enthusiasm, there was a standing meeting
organized that lasted 3.5hrs. Sasi's has excellent connections with the
Industry folks and is pally with many of the FOSS speakers.
He scored a hat-trick by attending Linux Bangalore three times in a row.
Samuel is our LAMP champ (apart from Redhat Scholarship awardee).
He has great following and connections among the students in the Hyderabad.
Samuel suggested a very interesting idea of having a 'twincling' club in
the various colleges in Hyderabad.
Anybody who wants to moderate the group and take it ahead is
very very welcome. We need to do everything possible to make up
for lost time!!!

sasi
Hi:
Sashi and myself met and discussed about the requirements and opportunities
at the Osmania Festival.
Vijay Kodam and Martin Samuel joined in to take the discussions further.
Vijay (Osmania) stated the requirement for certain presentations on the Linux
technology and platform, for beginning and intermediate students.
He also stated that we need speakers from the industry who can deliver
crisp, interesting and engaging talks.
Sashi presented the background of the LUG activities, benefits of student
and LUG interaction and offered thoughts on the potential talk sessions
that can be presented to the students.
Saifi stated the need to revive LUG and use the Osmania opportunity to
'boot up' the LUG and put in efforts to create a vibrant organization.
He also suggested a decentralized organization with relay-race like
participation
for long term viability. The current 'single' decision maker approach
is choking off
the creativity, potential and participation of the various LUG members.
--------------------------------------
During the discussions, the idea of presenting talks, hands-on session etc.
weaved with a 'theme' was mooted.
The total time is about 4 hours.
We need to have speakers from the industry and a tentative list of names
was drawn up as follows:
1. GRUB talk - Namita, Ganesh
2. multiboot workshop - Namita, Ganesh, Saifi
3. FOSS solutions stack talk - Atul Negi, Sashidhar
4. LAMP talk - Martin, Tariq Sani
Sashi will be sounding out Atul Negi and Tariq Sani for the talks and their
availability.
The idea is to work together to focus and channelize our efforts to
deliver on the
event (Feb 18, 19) and leaving a postive impression among the audience.
This will also boot strap the LUG which can then deliver on having a LUG club
in every college in Hyderabad. This smart idea was suggested by Martin.
There is also going to be a press meet which will be held by Atul Negi.
So LUG gets some media coverage too!
This is the first draft version and summary of the talk and discussions that
some of us had today.
