Human - chimpanzee interbreeding might have happened and produced a "Humanzee".

Daily Mail March 1, 2003, Is Oliver the chimp half-human?

by Mary Braid

He smoked cigars, drank whisky and had an eye for the ladies. Famed across the
world, Oliver was thought to be a freak cross between a man and an ape. Still
alive, genetic tests may now prove his true identity.

Oliver the latest American export to take Japan by storm, stood at the top of
the airline steps, surveying the camera men screaming and jostling for position
below.

It was spring 1976 and he was revelling in his international celebrity status,
and the frenzy around his three week tour of Japan.

Oliver's elevation to cult superstardom had been breathtakingly swift. A few
months before, he had been living anonymously in suburban Blackwood, New Jersey.
Now, he was hot and everyone wanted a piece of him.

A Japanese camera crew had filmed every moment of his flight from New York as he
ate dinner from his tray in first class and flirted with the stewardesses. In
the whirl of parties and Press calls that followed, Oliver was seen in his
dinner jacket, getting in and out of shiny black limos.

There were more intimate moments too - Oliver watching TV in his smoking jacket,
a cigar between his lips and a glass of whiskey in one hand, and even Oliver in
boxer shorts, slipping into bed in his luxury hotel.

It was the standard routine of a pop celebrity or a Hollywood film star. But
Oliver was neither. He was an ape with extraordinary human traits that many
thought he must be a hybrid creature.

Half -human, half - chimpanzee, he was described as a 'humanzee.'

Oliver was presented to the world as a scientific miracle. Some said he was the
product of secret experiments in which human and chimp DNA had been fused.

Others suggested that he was the result of some unspeakable union between human
and ape. Some newspapers even proclaimed him the missing link in the evolution
of man.

The story of how Oliver took the scientific community and the world by storm is
told in a TV documentary, The Human Chimp, which charts the ape's rise to fame
and sad decline. It also describes how science had tried to solve the mystery of
his identity.

Oliver's story starts in the jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1960
when he was captured and taken to America. Back then there was a roaring trade
between Africa and the US in baby chimps to satisfy the demand from TV shows and
circuses.

Two of the most famous trainers, Janet and Frank Burger, whose animal acts
regularly featured on The Ed Sullivan Show, became Oliver's first American
owners.

Today Frank is dead but Janet remembers when she noticed their most recent
purchase was utterly different from all the others.

'When he was about four or five months old, Oliver just stood up one day,' she
says. 'And then he was always up. Very seldom did he ever put his knuckles on
the ground like other apes.'

Oliver would walk upright, shoulders back and knees locked - just like a human
being.

Facially, he had less hair than other chimps. His cranium was small and egg -
shaped, not large and flat. His ears were pointed, not round, and set higher up.
His jaw was also far less pronounced than usual, giving his face a peculiarly
human look.

Oliver also lacked the distinctive chimp body odour. It was not just humans that
spotted the differences. Other chimps noticed them, too, and shunned Oliver -
not that he minded. He preferred human company anyway.

'He used to come in the house and sit down and watch television,' says Janet.
'Sometimes he would smoke a cigar.'

Old black - and - white TV footage captured Oliver, sitting, legs crossed on the
sofa next to Frank Burger with his cigar in one hand and whisky in the other. In
the mornings, he enjoyed a cup of coffee before helping feed the dogs.

Janet insists he was not trained to act this way. 'Oliver was like a little
person,' she says. 'He even knew how to wash his hands. He just wanted to do
what humans did.'

That desire to be human even extended to sex. Janet Burger says she had to look
for a new home for Oliver when he was 16 because, although he showed no interest
in female chimps, he had developed an embarrassing attachment to her.

At this stage a New York lawyer, Michael Miller, bought Oliver for $8,000 - in
the interests of scientific research. 'To be in his presence is just strange,'
says Miller. 'He's just different.'

Gordon Gallup, psychology professor of the State University of New York, agreed.
He was 'blown away' when he first saw Oliver paraded on stage at the annual
banquet of the city's Explorers' Club at the beginning of 1976.

'I thought Oliver might be a humanzee,' says Prof Gallup. 'He had some very
peculiar morphological characterises - facial characteristics that looked
surprisingly human-like.' He argues that since 99 per cent of our genetic
biochemistry with chimpanzees (our closes animal relatives), it would be
surprising if chimps and human could not cross - breed.

Moreover, he suspects the first humanzee may have been created in the US 50
years before Oliver's appearance.

He says rumours have circulated for decades that a female chimp was inseminated
with human sperm at the Yerkes Primate Centre at Orange Park, Florid, in the
1020s, and that a live birth was achieved.

The resultant 'baby' was apparently destroyed several days after its birth and
the experiment was kept secret.

'I had a professor who was at the Primate Centre at the time and he confided in
me it did happen,' says Prof Gallup. 'That doesn't make it true, but he was a
very credible source.'

Whatever the scientific possibilities, to say nothing of the moral nightmare,
the notion of the 'ape man' has always fascinated humans.

The Explorers' Club banquet fell completely silent when an upright Oliver walked
on stage led by his neck collar.

Everyone gawped at the strange creature. 'Oliver fever' gripped America. But
whatever the fascination at home, it was nothing compared with the mania that
gripped Japan when Oliver, the chimp man, visited a few months later.

Miller agreed to take Oliver to Japan in the hope that tests by Japanese
scientists would find if he really was a humanzee.

But he admits that, at some point during the visit, the balance between
scientific interest and media sensation was lost. Oliver's appearance on a
Japanese TV special attracted 26 million viewers.

The Oliver circus got even more out of hand when a Japanese actress told a
newspaper that she had agreed to have sex with him and the intercourse would be
shown on TV, 'in the interests of science.'

Miller says the sickening proposal convinced him that events were taking a
horrible turn. Some scientific tests were made. But what they proved has been
the subject of controversy ever since.

A Japanese TV special claimed that after blood analysis, scientists had found
that the ape had 47 chromosomes in some cells - one more than a human and one
fewer than a chimp. He was indeed a hybrid, a humanzee.

But the tests were never repeated, or confirmed in America.

Whatever the truth, Oliver's short -lived celebrity was almost over. When he
returned to America, Miller decided Oliver had had enough of the attention and
wanted to sell him.

Oliver's fans accused Miller of exploitation. He insists that he bought Oliver,
not as a commercial investment, but because he wanted to be a part of a
scientific breakthrough.

Either way, interest in the humanzee began to wane. Oliver spent the next decade
passing from trainer to trainer, appearing in jungle parks; circuses and,
eventually, in roadside freak shows. Those who had professed such scientific
interest in him forgot he even existed.

This decline in his fortunes was caused in part by the changes in the world
around him. By now the animal rights movement was questioning the morality of
taking animals from their natural habitats for human amusement. Circuses were
dying and animal parks closing.

At some point in the late Eighties, Oliver was quietly passed to a cosmetic and
scientific experimentation laboratory in Pennsylvania.

For the next seven years, the chimp, who had slept in crisp white sheets in
hotels, was confined to a 5ft by 5ft cage. Oddly, despite the length of the
stay, the Buckshire Corporation claimed that Oliver was never experimented on.

Even so, Oliver would surely have died in the lab but for a twist of fate. In
1996, Wally Swett, a former zoo keeper and founder of the Primarily Primates
animal sanctuary in San Antonio, Texas, was spearheading the first negotiated
'retirement' of lab animals.

Among 12 primates transferred to big care was a chimpanzee called Oliver. Swett
excitedly realised he had found the famous 'humanzee' the moment he left his
cage.

'He walked out fully upright despite the confinements of he cage,' says Swett,
laughing. 'I came out in goosebumps. It was definitely him. It was just
magical.'

But Oliver was a shadow of his former self. Years in the confined space had
caused him sever arthritis and within a few years he would lose his straight and
human gait.

Swett says he never believed Oliver was a humanzee but does think he was unique.
'There has never, ever been a chimpanzee trained to walk that has been able to
keep that pose.'

Swett's hunch is that Oliver is a member of a small and undiscovered branch of
the chimpanzee family. He believes his relatives live in an unexplored part of
the dense Congolese jungle.

'That's why he is still rejected by other chimpanzees,' he says. 'He's from a
different tribe.'

So Swett decided to take advantage of the advances in genetics. A Chicago
University geneticist tested Oliver's blood but found no evidence of human
chromosomes.

A biologist at San Antonio's Trinity University has also concluded that Oliver
was not a form of 'man ape' but a type of chimp unusual in the Congo but
commonly found in Gabon.

Swett is dissatisfied with such conclusions. He complains that the tests did not
exhaust all possible explanations of Oliver's uniqueness and plans more.

His worry is that Oliver - now 42 (five years older than the average chimp life
expectancy) - might die before a genetic basis to his unique behaviour and
appearance is found.

MEANWHILE, Oliver is living out his final days in a spacious enclosure in the
Texan sun. He's still a loner in chimp society and happiest among humans. 'He
loves it when you give him treats; like sweets or raisins;' says Swett.

`He is comfortable now. But is, he happy? No. He has no teeth. Some trainer once
pulled them with pliers. His liver is damaged because he was once encouraged to
drink a bottle of wine a day. He is also blind and has severe arthritis from the
laboratory cage.

`He has had a lonely life and the fact is he should never have been brought to
the States. He should have been left in Africa.'

Swett's sanctuary, a charity, relies on donations. Oliver's anti-inflammatory
drugs cost £8 a day and there are hundreds more sick animals to care for.

Now Swett faces a moral dilemma. A Japanese film crew this week offered $6,009
to film their Seventies cult star. He badly needs the money for his sanctuary.

Like all ageing stars, Oliver's comeback could be just around the corner,

Comments on the possible Humanzee :

Oliver the Chimp (the possible Humanzee) achieved celebrity status for a while,
and like many celebrities then got forgotten by the general public: the general
public is fickle as many celebrities discover.

It is ridiculous that a follow up blood test was not made straight after the
Japanese TV special claimed that after blood analysis, scientists had found that
the ape had 47 chromosomes in some cells - one more than a human and one fewer
than a chimp.

And the late follow up test by a Chicago University geneticist that tested
Oliver's blood but found no evidence of human chromosomes sounds very dubious,
given that Chimps are supposed to be very close genetically to humans, how can
one tell when that cross over from chimp to human occurs? Sounds like the
geneticist arbitrarily decided where that line was.

The biologist at San Antonio's Trinity University claim that Oliver was not a
form of 'man ape' but a type of chimp unusual in the Congo but commonly found in
Gabon, is very odd, why has a human-walking chimp tribe never been publicised?
All text books claim human have a unique walking style of the apes.

Why has no one added together the idea of if there are tribes of human-walking
chimps then may be this explains Yeti and Bigfoot? And if such creatures were
cannibals like (many) early men then this would explain why there is no physical
evidence (of corpses etc.) left behind.

There sounds like there are some people deeply prejudiced and don't want to find
out that chimps and humans can crossbreed, and so have tried to put a stop to
the implications of Oliver-type creatures being out there in the wild.

If chimps and humans can cross breed, then if there are aliens then why can't
humans and aliens crossbreed?

FINALLY ---- OLIVER IS YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HUMANS TRYING TO IGNORE ANOMALIES
AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, AND CARRY -ON AS IF ANOMALIES DO NOT EXIST!!! (Oliver is a
tip of the iceberg in some people's denial of reality. We get a "Crypto-Fortean
Creature" look at it with casual interest, and then try to pretend its not
there, and forget about it -- Mankind in Permanent State of trying to induce
Amnesia upon itself.

CANADA'S SPACE TELESCOPE BEGINS OPERATIONS
Aug 5, 2003 - After one month in space, Canada's Microvariability &
Oscillations of STars (MOST) space telescope began operations for the first time
last week. A team of engineers and scientists from Dynacon, and the Universities
of Toronto and BC issued the command that opens the door, allowing starlight
into the sensitive observatory. MOST will measure the oscillation in the light
intensity coming from various stars to help determine their composition and age.

COSMONAUT PLANNING SPACE MARRIAGE
Aug 5, 2003 - Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko is going ahead with his plans
to marry his fiancé from space on August 10, despite protests from the Russian
Aerospace Agency. Malenchenko will be represented at the wedding by a lawyer,
and he'll call in from the station during a special time when the astronauts are
allowed to call their families. Astronaut Ed Lu quietly arranged to have his
tailcoat and ring sent up on a recent Progress cargo ship.

NASA PICKS THE NEXT MARS LANDER
Aug 5, 2003 - NASA announced on Monday that it has selected the University of
Arizona's "Phoenix" mission to launch to Mars in 2007 as part of its new,
low-cost Scout mission. NASA has granted the university $325 million to build
the spacecraft, which will land on the planet's northern pole, which is rich in
water ice. The mission will have two goals: to study the geologic history of
water, and to search for evidence of a habitable zone that may exist in the
ice-soil boundary.

It is IMPOSSIBLE that Humans have less chromosomes than Chimps and all the
other, simpler organisms that the scientists claim we do. I think we are,
yet again, being lied to. Some mention is made of a "few" "alien"
(bacteria-contaminated (give me a break!)) genes. I think we have a lot more
than a "few" more genes and I think they're a lot more more "alien" than
Earthly bacteria.

Elohim ambiguity

Ian Lawton:

"One of the simplest and most poignant examples of editing for political and
religious purposes, which came as a great surprise to me when I learned of it
many years ago, is that there are two separate Hebrew words translated as 'God'
in English translations of the Old Testament: one is Yahweh, a singular proper
name, the other is Elohim, a plural collective term. These two words, broadly
speaking, derive from two separate sources known as Yahwist and the Eohist
texts. In sensible translation the latter word would have to be rendered as gods
- plural. This, of course, would tend to contradict the entrenched monotheism of
Christianity; so the simple removal of the s at the end is one of the finest
examples of expedient editing of older texts that we have."

However, Graham Philips translates 'Elohim' differently:

"In the biblical account, when Moses first asks God to reveal his name at the
burning bush he is told, 'I am who I am' (Exodus 3:14). He was simply God - the
only God. The Hebrew word for 'god' was El. This had various forms such as
Eloyn, 'god most high,' and Elohim, 'your god,' or El Shaddai, 'god Almighty.'
The word Yahweh, 'the Lord,' is often used as in Yahweh - tsidkenu, the 'Lord of
hosts.'"

Elohim = 'gods' or 'your god' ??

Who is right Lawton or Philips?

PLANNING A MARS PARTY?
Aug 6, 2003 - With Mars the closest it's going to be in 60,000 years on August
27, I figure this'll be a good time to get people interested in space and
astronomy. Several astronomers have told me they're planning to take their
telescopes into parks, etc, and give people a chance to see the Red Planet with
their own eyes.

I think this is a great idea, so I figured I'll start maintaining a list on
Universe Today of all locations around the world that will have telescopes set
up on the 27th.

Is your astronomy club planning a get together for Mars 2003? Let me know where
you're going to be and I'll add you to the list. Then I'll make it available as
the event gets closer so people can find you and take a look through your
telescopes. Even if you're not part of a club, just take your telescope out to
the park, and encourage the public to take a look. Sidewalk astronomy is one of
the best ways that astronomers can share their hobby.

Send me an email at mailto:info@...

Thanks!

ASTRONOMERS MEASURE THE SHAPE OF A SUPERNOVA
Aug 6, 2003 - New data gathered by the European Southern Observatory's Very
Large Telescope (VLT) seems to indicate that supernovae might not be symmetrical
when they explode - their brightness changes depending on how you look at them.
This discovery is important, because astronomers use supernovae as an
astronomical yardstick to measure distances to objects. If they're brighter or
dimmer depending on how you're looking at them, it could cause errors in your
distance calculations. But the new research indicates that they become more
symmetrical over time, so astronomers just need to wait a little while before
doing their calculations.

PERSEID METEOR SHOWER NEXT WEEK
Aug 6, 2003 - The annual Perseid meteor shower is due to make its appearance in
mid-August this summer. The shower began on July 23 and will end on August 22,
but the bulk of shooting stars will appear on August 13, when upwards of one
meteor per minute is visible in the night sky. Unfortunately, the full Moon will
brighten the sky and make some of the fainter meteors harder to see. To get the
best view of the Perseids, get away from the city lights to a place which is as
flat as possible to give you a wide view of the sky.

ASTEROID JUNO HAS A CHUNK OUT OF IT
Aug 6, 2003 - New images taken by the 100-inch Hooker telescope at Mount Wilson
Observatory show Asteroid Juno with a huge chunk taken out of it. Harvard
astronomer Sallie Baliunas used the adaptive optics system on the Hooker
telescope, which compensates for distortions in the atmosphere, to take photos
of the 241 km asteroid with incredible clarity. The photos show that Juno is
misshapen and has a 100 km crater from an impact with another asteroid in the
past.

I agree Randy. I have seen books that discuss how ancient
Egyptians had electricity. . .and the unknown ancients placed
Stonehenge, and monoliths like the Easter Island heads, etc. There
are Mayan (?) hieroglyphical symbols that look like helicopters,
planes and UFO's, etc. etc. etc. And, of course, there are the
numerous (albeit rumored) technological achievements of Atlantis.
And we will always have to wonder about the knowledge lost in the
burning of the Alexandrian Library (and wonder about the secrets
purportedly found under the paw of the Sphinx).

I am sure technology may have harmed, and possibly destroyed, many
cultures before us. We may not be the first, or last group of humans
to succumb to our technology before we are compassionate,
intelligent and WISE enough to safely maintain/use it.

If indeed we are watched from above, it may be by odd, but
benevolent "aliens", whom I personally believe may be under the
control of God. Although this idea has horrified some of my
straight-laced Christian friends (and I am a devout Christian, as
well), I feel it could very well explain the return of
Christ "coming down from the clouds". God is paranormal (far above
and beyond "normal")so I believe this is a possibility, although I'd
never call it a belief--- just an interesting hypothesis I have
thought about. . .

Ahhh the wonders of mysteries ;)

Thanks for a great informational site and forum :)

COMETS TAKE MORE DAMAGE THAN WE THOUGHT
Aug 7, 2003 - Astronomers used to believe that comets were relics of an early
solar system, largely unchanged since the time they were created billions of
years ago. But a new study from the Southwest Research Institute indicates that
comets might not have had it so easy. Over the course of billions of years,
they've been bathed in many kinds of radiation; sandblasted by interstellar
dust; heated by stars and supernovae; and fragmented by many collisions. Deep
core drilling will probably be necessary to get more realistic data about the
state of the early solar system.

MALFUNCTIONING INSTRUMENT ON SPIRIT
Aug 7, 2003 - An instrument on board Spirit, one of NASA's Mars Exploration
Rovers, has malfunctioned, potentially limiting the amount of data that can be
retrieved from the surface of Mars. The instrument is called a Mossbauer
spectrometer, and it's designed to determine the presence and abundance of
iron-bearing minerals in the rocks of Mars. If the glitch can't be worked out,
it will still be able to detect the mineral, just not its quantity. Engineers
still have several months to get this fixed before Spirit arrives at Mars on
January 3.

ASTEROIDS NAMED FOR LOST ASTRONAUTS
Aug 7, 2003 - Seven asteroids were recently renamed to honour the astronauts of
the space shuttle Columbia. The asteroids are all 5 to 7 km long, and were
discovered on the nights of July 19-21, 2001 at the Palomar Observatory near San
Diego by astronomer Eleanor F. Helin. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory proposed
the idea, and it was recently approved by the International Astronomical Union,
which is responsible for maintaining the names of celestial objects.

HUBBLE LOOKS AT OUR CLOSEST CLUSTER
Aug 7, 2003 - The newest image from the Hubble Space Telescope reveals one of
the nearest globular star clusters, NGC 6397, located only 8,200 light years
away in the constellation Ara. The stars in this cluster are packed one million
times more densely than our own galactic neighborhood; collisions between stars
occur every few million years. Two colliding stars may merge to become a "blue
straggler"; a bright, young hot star that looks very different from the rest of
the stars in the cluster.

A witness called today from Ontario to make a report of a sighting he and his
wife had witnessed. The husband and wife had just got back from their son's ball
game, his son had caught a ride home with his friends. When the couple arrived
home and were going about their business, they noticed none of the telephones
were working in the house. The fellow wanted to contact the phone company, but
of course couldn't. He wondered if the phone in the barn might be working so he
headed outside and was on his way to the barn, looking up through the Pine trees
and across the highway when he saw an extremely bright white light. The witness
said it was so bright that he could not even look at it without placing his hand
up in front of him. At the point where he first noticed it, the light was
approx: a kilometer away coming from the west and his neighbors farm.

The witness mentioned to me that after he first spotted it the first thing that
popped into his head was "camera". Although due to being fascinated with the
object he soon forgot about the camera. He ran back up from the barn area and
banged on his home's door to catch his wife's attention. When she ask what was
going on, he said to her, 'you have to come out and see this".

He explained that he is not a man who gets rattled very easy, but what he had
witnessed did shake it up a lot.

When the object came up close to his property it was not traveling very fast at
all and had four bright white lights at the front of it and one red light in the
middle, or center of the craft. He also said as bright as the lights were, they
did not illuminate any of the surrounding area. He and his wife both thought it
looked like a boomerang in shape. Also the fellow said it looked as if something
was sticking out of the front of it. As the object left their property moving
into the distance they lost sighting of the bright lights, but they did say the
lights which were at the front of the craft were still lighting up the front end
of it. (HBCC UFO Note: The witness said when he first saw it he thought it was
landing lights on a large jet aircraft. He also wondered if it was going to
crash due to it being at such a low altitude and no airport close by). There was
also sound heard coming from the object. A very low rumbling sound to it, like a
throbbing sound. As he pointed out, that if it was a normal aircraft and being
as low as it was. The sound would have knocked his socks off due to it being
very loud. But it wasn't like this at all. The object itself was dark or
blackish in color. The fellow gave a "guess" at what the size may have been,
using his home as reference of 74 feet long. He figured the distance between the
first light to the second may have been roughly 70 feet in distance. So between
the first light and the last the approx: distance would have been just over 200
feet. This would have been how wide the object was, or appeared to be.

Hopefully the other witnesses across the lake will talk with me over what they
saw, which was the same object.

Thank you to the witness for the report.

There are alot of unexplained common threads in cultures and
their artifacts indeed. More so then can be explained in our text
books. Even as we discover this we seem to forget to update
those text books. Have you ever heard Joseph Campbell speak
about myths and folk lore of all cultures? He was amazing. Bill
Moyer (PBS) did a 5 part series with him, I have it on dvd.

Where ever it is I want a library card! Things like this is what
compels me to keep up the search, I know there is still lots to be
found (or in some cases divuldged).

I'm a beliver in god as love ... god is balance.... god is the center
stillness between positive and negitive, compression,
expansion, outward, inward....all things are from god and return.
I don't perscribe to the personal god theory (devil) or organized
religions.

Jaffray, British Columbia

Date: July 27, 2003
Time: approx: 2:00 a.m.

I contacted a person who resides in Jaffray, British Columbia tonight as I heard
they were witness to something pretty darn strange. Not only did she see what I
am about to tell you, but so did 7 other witnesses. Bringing the total number of
folks who observed this to 8.

Why I have found this to be an interesting sighting is due to Mr. Peter
Davenport from the NUFORC receiving a report from a witness which took place on
July 27, 2003 at St. Mary's Lake, 12 miles east of Kimberly, British Columbia.
Due to Mr. Davenport receiving the St. Mary's Lake sighting, and myself helping
in following up on this case, more witnesses names have come to light. Tomorrow
I will be talking with another witness who was in another location who saw the
same object pass over head. The one reported to the NUFORC.

The NUFORC's report is below:

Occurred : 7/27/2003 04:00 (Entered as : 07/27/03 04:00)
Reported: 7/31/2003 12:33:30 PM 12:33
Posted: 8/1/2003
Location: Kimberly (St. Mary's Lake), BC
Shape: Light
Duration:1-2 minutes

Telephoned Report: A husband and wife, camped with their children near St.
Mary's Lake, approximately 12 miles east of Kimberly, B.C., witnessed a bright,
white light appear over the mountains to the west of their position, and appear
to course toward their location. The wife estimated that the light was the
apparent size of a full Moon, and "spikes" were coming off of it.

The witnesses called the local airport, which took a report from them, but which
reported that nothing unusual had been reported to their facility. The couple
also called a local observatory, which told them that they probably had been
witness to the International Space Station.

They also called the local Kimberly newspaper, which reported that their offices
had received approximately five calls from citizens, reporting strange lights in
the vicinity of Kimberly on the same morning.

The witnesses will submit reports, when they get access to a computer. They
generated a hand-drawn image of what the object looked like.

((NUFORC Note: We are awaiting reports from the witnesses, but will post this
report for now. We observe that the International Space Station passed over
Kimberly, B.C., at 00:24 hrs. on July 27, but it may not be related to the
sighting described by the witnesses. However, the witnesses may not have had a
timepiece, to be able to determine an accurate time for their sighting. Please
see the following URL for details on the flight path of the ISS:

Thank you to Mr. Peter Davenport at the NUFORC
Witnesses can use the NUFORC's Online Sighting Reporting Form.
http://www.ufocenter.com/

The Jaffray, British Columbia Sighting below: Does these two reports hand
something to do with one another.

As I mentioned above in my opening statement I talked with one of the witnesses
who observed something strange on July 27, 2003 with seven others.

So at 2:00 a.m. one of the guests who were at the ladies home I chatted with
tonight went outside and looked up into the night sky and saw a strange ray of
white light which went right across the clear night's sky from the northwest
heading southeast running in a straight line. The guest called everyone out to
have a look due to it being very strange. Some of the thoughts people had who
were observing this mentioned they first thought it may have been the northern
lights. But all soon ruled out it being the aurora. The witness said the ray of
light was so brilliant that many of the witnesses could see it rotating within
it's self. Also it was noted due to the brightness of this light that they could
see a black line running the whole length of the white light. The black line
stayed in the same spot as the rest of the light rotated as mentioned above. She
also said it looked like a jet stream to give a good example of what it looked
like. Also the total length of the ray of light was all the same brightness.
There was no portion of it brighter or dimmer. It remained constant right across
the sky. (HBCC UFO Note: I did bring up the question, did anyone see any aurora
at any other time that night? I was told no, none was observed).

The witness said the ray of light stayed in the same position for an hour before
it started fading away. I also asked if any of them saw any other strange lights
in the sky that night, and she told me no. They only observed the ray of light
running across the sky. She also told me that the light was rather wide, meaning
it wasn't just a small point of light. No sounds were heard at all. Jaffray,
B.C. is directly southeast from the original sighting at St. Mary's Lake.

Administrative note:

For the first time since this group began, I am sending this message
as a Special Notice. I'm doing this because I was recently contacted
by someone who had joined the list but wasn't receiving any reminders
about meteor showers. I investigated and found the subscriber had
chosen Special Notices as their delivery option and I've never sent
one.

I'm sending this message as a Special Notice in case some others are
in the same situation. If you signed up to receive these reminders
and this is the first one you've received, please check to see if
your group setting is set to receive Special Notices only. If so, you
might want to switch to receive individual emails. This is a low-
volume list (9 messages this year including this one), so if you
choose individual emails, I promise you won't be flooded with emails
from me. :)
**************

Now on to the real reason for this message, the Perseids!

The Perseids, one of the most famous meteor showers, peaks during the
pre-dawn hours of August 13, but some may be spotted during the
period of July 23rd through August 22nd.

The bad news: The Perseids normally have a peak rate of 65 - 70
meteors per hour, but unfortunately the 98% illuminated Moon will
virtually destroy the Perseids this year.

The good news: Fortunately due to the fact that some can be seen both
before and after the peak, you have an good opportunity to catch some
Perseids this weekend. As we move toward the peak on the 13th,
Perseid activity is slowly rising. During this weekend, the Moon will
have already set, or be fairly low in the sky, during the pre-dawn
hours when meteor watching is typically at its best. So while you
will not see as much activity this weekend as you normally would at
the peak, you will quite likely do better observing this weekend than
you will on the peak night.

To view the Perseids, generally view toward the east, but remember
Perseids can and will appear anywhere in your skies. So while the
East is preferred, view upward toward the darkest, least obstructed
portion of your sky. Find something comfortable to sit or lie upon in
an area away from the sky glow of urban areas if possible. Don't
forget to dress appropriately and if you live in a hot, humid area as
I do, you may want to have some insect repellant handy. :)

Perseid meteors are caused by the orbital debris left by comet Swift-
Tuttle. Swift-Tuttle was discovered in 1862 and it has an orbital
period of about 130 years. It last visited our solar system during
the summer of 1992.

Best of luck with your observations. If you have any questions, you
can reach me at MeteorShowers-owner@yahoogroups.com . I'll be happy
to answer any astronomical questions you might have.

STAR CLUSTER WALLPAPER
Aug 8, 2003 - Thanks to everyone who wrote in letting me know about your Mars
party plans. I'm working on the list now, and should have something on the site
by next week. If you, or your astronomy club, or your planetarium, or space
society is planning a get together for Mars, let me know so I can add it to the
list. Email me at info@....

Here's a new wallpaper for you. It's a beautiful picture of globular cluster NGC
6207, which was released from the Hubble Space Telescope yesterday. I've set the
image up in 1600x1200 format so it should look good on large monitors, and then
scale down nicely from there. Click the link, and then right-click on the image
and choose "set as wallpaper". That will make it your desktop background.

HUBBLE SEES ONE GALAXY CONSUMING ANOTHER
Aug 8, 2003 - A new image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope shows a large
galaxy gobbling up a smaller one; a process anticipated by astronomers, but
never directly seen before. Astronomers used the Keck Telescope in Hawaii to
confirm that the dwarf galaxy is being consumed by measuring the rate that stars
are streaming towards the larger galaxy. The stars of the smaller galaxy will

SEA LAUNCH LOFTS ECHOSTAR IX/TELSTAR 13
Aug 8, 2003 - The dual-use Echostar IX/Telstar 13 satellite was successfully
placed into orbit Thursday on board a Zenit-3SL which was launched from the Sea
Launch platform floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The communications
satellite separated 66 minutes after launch, and will eventually provide
television services to the United States. This is the tenth launch for Sea
Launch, which is expected to have two more launches this year.

ESA'S LUNAR MISSION PREPARES FOR LAUNCH
Aug 8, 2003 - The European Space Agency's first spacecraft mission to the Moon,
SMART-1, is being prepared for launch at the end of August. The spacecraft was
delivered in mid-July to the ESA's space centre in Kourou, French Guiana, and is
expected to launch on August 29. The spacecraft will take 16 months to reach the
Moon, following a long spiral trajectory, and using its efficient ion engine to
gradually put it into orbit around the Moon. SMART-1 will then search for
evidence of water-ice in craters near the Moon's poles.

North Bay, Ontario

Date: August 6, 2003
Time: 12:32 a.m.

HBCC UFO Note: Before I start I would like to thank Mr. Joe McGonagle at
www.ufology.org.uk for passing along this sighting to me for investigation.
Without Joe being kind enough to send the report, we may have lost this one.

HBCC UFO Note: I telephoned the witness today (August 8, 2003) at his home in
North Bay Ontario. The fellow was kind enough to share what he and two other
friends had witness on August 8, 2003 at 12:32 a.m. Also I will be hearing from
the other two witnesses who were there. I will update the sighting with their
information after I receive it. Also pictures are going to be emailed to me so
one might determine what this thing was. The witness I talked with said he has
the pictures already developed and had them handy when chatting with me. He also
mentioned that the pictures did not come out all that well, but you can still
see something sitting in the night sky.

The witness told me that he and a couple of close friends had just dropped off
one of their buddies. As they continued down the road they came to a full stop
at the street light. The witness I talked with said while at a complete stop he
turned his head to the right and saw a really strange object, he then pointed in
the direction the object was sitting to alert his friends what he was looking
at. All the fellows at this point were stunned at what they were seeing, so they
pulled the vehicle over at an arcade business to watch. Due to this object being
so low they wondered if it was attached by a cable, wire, etc.. because it sat
stationary in one position. At this point they grabbed the camera, got out of
the vehicle and took three snap shots of it.

He told me while they stood watching the object it started to pulsate then
disappeared, or blinked out. The object was sitting at approx: 250 feet (or
close guess) off the ground, it was also very close to the witnesses as they
estimated it to be about 6 to 7 blocks away from their position. It was cigar
shaped, and solid grey in color. The total viewing time was approx: 3 to 5
minutes after they first spotted it. Also I was told that stood out from
everything around them, meaning it wasn't extremely bright, but you couldn't
miss it sitting in the air.
I asked if any sound could be heard coming from it, the witness told me they
could hear a very faint humming sound after the object blinked out. The skies
were clear.

After the fellows lost sight of it they jumped back into the vehicle and drove
quickly to where the object had been sitting, thinking they may be able to get
another look at it. But it had vanished. He also said there is a plant,
(industrial complex) and this is where the object was hovering over top of.
According to the witness the object was not seen flying in any direction as I
mentioned above, it blinked out after sitting stationary for the few minutes.

Thank you to the witness for the report, and again thank you to
www.ufology.org.uk for forwarding the sighting to me.

Kimberly, British Columbia

Date: July 27, 2003
Time: approx: 1:30 p.m. (or close).

This is a follow-up to the St. Mary's Lake, B.C. sighting which was reported to
Mr. Peter Davenport at the NUFORC
An additional witness interviewed.

I telephoned another witness tonight over the July 27, 2003 sighting in the
Kimberly/St. Mary's Lake area. The witness reported to me that she was in bed,
and couldn't sleep due to the warm temperatures outside. Her bedroom blinds were
up and the window fully open and then she gave out a cry, "holy cow". Their home
is up on a large hill which gives them a very good view of the surrounding area.
The witness suddenly noticed, what she thought was a bright star or maybe an
airplane coming in with it's landing lights on because it was moving at this
point. The lady mentioned that it was extremely large in size and flying very
low. Actually the witness just laid their waiting to see a green and red light,
thinking it was certainly an aircraft coming down the St. Mary's Valley heading
in to land at the near-by airport. She told me that the airplanes take the route
down the St. Mary's Valley when heading to Vancouver and back to Kimberly B.C.

The lady still laying there and watching the bright white light moving faster as
it grew closer. All of a sudden it started maneuvering in a zig zag pattern. At
this point in the sighting, where she could not see it anymore she jumped out of
bed and headed toward her bedroom door, opened it and ran through her cottage
styled home until she reached her front door of her home. The time she unlocked
her front door and stepped outside the light was gone. I mentioned to this
witness after taking her report about the 8 witnesses who saw a ray of light
over the Jaffray, B.C. area which I reported on. She told me the light/object
was traveling southeast from Kimberly, B.C. and would have flown straight over
Jaffray, B.C. (HBCC UFO Note: What makes this interesting is that we are finding
more witnesses to the sighting which was originally reported to Peter Davenport
at the NUFORC. Plus other people who witnessed the ray of light and the object
itself. From what I am gathering is that the light/object may have caused the
ray of light. But of course this is a guess on my behalf. I was also contacted
by a very kind person today who read my report and told me of another witness
who had made a posting at a UFO forum board and explained to everyone about this
ray of light, same location, different witness. This lady also took pictures of
the light ray and I am now trying to track her down so I can give her a phone
call to gather more information on this whole event.

Thank you to this witness for her report.

Sorry gang, I goofed up. The time the sighting took place was somewhere around
1:30 A.M., not p.m. as I just reported.

Again sorry for my mistake in this.

BTW List, I am playing catch up here after pretty much a week off with family.

Houston, British Columbia

Date: August 2, 2003
Time: approx: 1:15 a.m.

I went to the Houston mall today to pick up some more tapes, when I was there
one of the stores employees told me about a sighting he and his friend had when
they were out camping at Irrigation Lake which is just a few minutes west of
Houston, British Columbia.

Both were sitting at the lakes shore when a bright white flash of light caught
their eye and traveled from the north to the south and at a high rate of speed.
Before they lost sight of it, the light started zig zagging briefly across the
sky and completely disappeared. The entire event lasted approx: 3 seconds but it
did give the fellows something interesting to tell their friends.

HBCC UFO Note: It seems there has been a lot of this type of sightings recently
that I have received. Lights zig zagging across the sky. It makes me wonder what
the heck these lights are.

Thank you to the fellow for his report.

Houston, British Columbia

Date: August 7, 2003
Time: approx: 11:30 p.m.

Again today I received a local telephone call from a Houston resident who wanted
to ask a couple of questions, and to inform me of something unusual that was
seen by her, and her two teenagers. Both the Mom and the kids reported seeing a
very bright white flash of light, followed by a extremely bright flash of blue
light which lit up their property. No object or sound was heard, nothing at all
actually other than the bright flashes of light.

I did some quick checking and found out that one punch of lightening was seen at
the time these folks witnesses the flashes of light. So this one was solved and
glad to be able to figure it out quickly. Seems like to many sightings are going
unsolved out this way. So again, lightening was the cause of the white and blue
flashes of light. I also guess they wondered about it as no thunder was heard
following the flashes of light.

Thank you to the witnesses for the report.

11) Sun-like Stars More Likely to Harbor Planets
12) Closing Comments and Acknowledgments

1) The Perseid Meteor Shower: To quote Astronomer Annie Jump Cannon
(1863-1941), "In these days of great trouble and unrest, let people look to
the stars for comfort." And, there is no time like the present. We are in
the middle of the Perseid Meteor Shower, which will peak August 12. Perseid
meteors come from the comet Swift-Tuttle, and provide a great reason to go
outside in your pj's in the early morning hours. You'll see "shooting stars
racing along the Milky Way." A perfect end to the summer season.

2) Mars Closest Approach in 60,000 Years: This month and next Earth is
catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest
approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may
come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars
and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not
come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as
60,000 years.
The encounter will culminate on August 27 when Mars comes to within
34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the
night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc
seconds wide. At a modest 75 power magnification Mars will look as large as
the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning
of August, it will rise in the east at 10 pm and reach its azimuth at about
3 am. But by the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will
rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 am. That's
pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen
in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to
see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

3) The ARC ~ Alternate Realities Conference 2003 on DVD: We are working on
the production of DVD copies of our 2003 Conference... Please write to us at

7) Thirty Billion Exoplanets In Our Own Galaxy According To New Study:
Chances are you haven't spent a whole lot of time wondering how many
Jupiter-like planets exist in our galaxy. But Charley Lineweaver has,
because it bears on a more important question: How many potentially
habitable planets are there?

New calculations by Lineweaver and Daniel Grether, both of the University of
New South Wales in Australia, provide an encouraging answer to this
question. The researchers expect a flood of Jupiters will be found, perhaps
50 percent more than currently expected.

Each such discovery would be significant in the hunt for planets that could
harbor life.

Why? Because much of the evolution of our own solar system, including the
formation of Earth, was orchestrated or affected by Jupiter, the largest
planet with by far the bulk of the solar system's mass, excepting the Sun,
of course.

"Our solar system is Jupiter and a bunch of junk," as Lineweaver puts it.

When Jupiter developed, it simply bullied other objects into position or out
of existence. Then the mighty gas giant became Earth's protector.

Though the fledgling Earth was pummeled by asteroids and comets, making it
difficult for life to take hold, it could have been much worse. Jupiter
shielded Earth from an even heavier bombardment of debris that made its way
from the outskirts of the new system toward its central star.

That protective role continues. In 1994, Jupiter used its immense gravity to
lure comet Shoemaker-Levy into a death plunge. Had the comet hit Earth, it
would have sterilized much or all of the planet.

For now, no one knows whether our solar system represents a common method of
formation and evolution. In fact, discoveries over the past six years seem
to indicate otherwise. Most of the roughly 80 planets discovered outside our
solar system are much more massive than Jupiter. They also orbit perilously
close to their host stars, locations that would likely prevent rocky planets
from forming in so-called habitable orbits.

But experts attribute these findings to the limitations of technology.
Smaller planets in more comfortable orbits around other stars simply can't
be detected. Yet.

All this in mind, Lineweaver and Grether worked out some new calculations
for the prevalence of planets that are about Jupiter's size at about the
same distance from their host stars. The calculations are based on some of
the most recent extra solar planet discoveries, in which ever-smaller
objects are being detected at ever-greater distances from their host stars.

So how many Jupiters are out there orbiting Sun-like stars in the Milky Way
Galaxy?

"At least a billion, but probably more like 30 billion", some scientists
say.

And the math behind that?

"There are about 300 billion stars in our galaxy. About 10 percent (or 30
billion) are roughly Sun-like," he explained. "At least 5 percent (1.5
billion) but possibly as many as 90 percent or 100 percent (about 30
billion) of these have Jupiter-like planets."

These estimates would vary based on exactly what you call Jupiter-like or
Sun-like, Lineweaver said.

What about Earths?

The calculations, which are part of a paper that has been submitted to the
journal Astrobiology, don't bear directly on worlds like our own. But with
what's known of planet formation, some speculation is possible.

"A reasonable guess is the same number of Earths as Jupiters," Lineweaver
said.

That, however, depends heavily on how one defines Earth-like. If one
includes rocky planets in general, like Mercury, Venus and Mars, "then they
are probably more common than Jupiters," he said. If, however, you mean
rocky planets with liquid water at the surface, "then we really can't answer
that very well. They may be as common as Jupiters, or they may be much less
common."

Alan Boss, an expert in planetary system formation at the Carnegie
Institution of Washington, said the new calculations for Jovian twins seem
reasonable. Trying then to estimate the number of Earth-like planets
requires "a leap of faith, but one which appears to be plausible," he said.

"As the veil covering the unseen portions of discovery space is lowered in
the next decade, I expect we will find that Jupiter-like planets are
commonplace," said Boss, who was not involved in the new study. "Whether or
not that also means Earth-like planets are common can only be proven by
NASA's Kepler mission."

Kepler, recently approved to launch in 2006, will monitor 100,000 stars for
telltale dips in light indicating an Earth-sized planet in an Earth-like
orbit has crossed in front of the star. While it would not take photographs,
Kepler could provide the first census of planets that have the potential to
support life.

8) Mission: SPACE, New Disney World Space Themed Attraction: There's no need
to wait for NASA to come up with a way to get astronauts to Mars. Guests of
the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando will soon have a new way to
experience the trip by stepping inside Mission: SPACE -- a long-awaited,
space-themed ride that is arguably the most technologically advanced
amusement ever developed by Disney Imagineers.

The Epcot attraction is scheduled to "soft open" to the public Aug. 15. That
will be followed by a star-studded, grand opening celebration in October.
"We have worked for a long time about doing 'space' at Epcot because it's
just such a natural fit with what we're about here," said Brad Rex, Disney's
vice president in charge of Epcot. "This is a tribute to NASA and the space
program."

Sponsored by HP, the attraction was designed with the full support of the
space agency and is believed to have cost Disney more than $100 million to
develop and construct. During a recent media preview, this writer toured the
attraction and took a spin on the ride, which exactly describes the secret
behind the four-minute adventure that is the main attraction of the
re-modeled Horizons pavilion sandwiched between the Test Track and Wonders
of Life buildings.

At the heart of Mission: SPACE is a centrifuge -- a spinning arm with a seat
at the end that exposes the rider to varying g forces depending on how fast
the arm is turning. One g is normal gravity, while two g's makes you feel
like you've doubled your weight. A normal shuttle mission exposes the crew
to a maximum of about three g's. Disney won't confirm how many g's Mission:
SPACE pulls at most, but it's close to two g's...

9) Earth's Gravity May Be Shifting According To New Findings: Something
strange has been going on under our feet for the past four years. Earth's
gravity field suddenly shifted gears and began getting flatter, reversing a
course of centuries during which the planet and its gravity field grew
rounder each year.

The scientists who noticed the change and report it in the Aug. 2 issue of
the journal Science suspect Earth itself may be flattening out, with the
oceans rising near the equator, but they aren't sure. What they do know is
that Earth has never been round. It has always bulged at the equator and is
about 0.3 percent fatter there, partly a result of the planet's rotation.

Getting rounder... Yet ever since the last Ice Age, the planet has been
getting rounder as ground beneath the polar regions, relieved of the weight
from ice that was miles thick in places, has been rebounding. In some parts
of Scandinavia and Canada, the ground rises a quarter-inch (1 centimeter)
per year.

Since the late 1970s, satellite measurements have shown that this
post-glacial rebound, as it is called, generates a corresponding rounding of
Earth's gravity field. Suddenly the trend has reversed. "Sometime around
1998, something began to make the Earth's gravity field flatter," says
Christopher Cox of Raytheon Information Technology and Scientific Services.
"The result is it looks as if post-glacial rebound has reversed itself. But,
we do not have any reason to think that post-glacial rebound has in any way
stopped or changed."

In effect, Cox said in an interview, while post-glacial rebound continues to
make the Earth rounder, some movement of mass on the surface of the Earth
must be making the gravity field flatter. It's not a change anyone could
notice; it's only revealed by sensitive satellite measurements. The shift,
however, is significant. "The effect is twice as large as post-glacial
rebound in terms of effect on the gravity field, and it's in the opposite
direction," Cox said. "Whatever it is, it's big."

Like a rubber ball... Cox, who also works at NASA's Goddard Space Flight
Center, described post-glacial rebound as similar to pushing a rubber ball
in at the top and bottom with your fingers. "The sides come out, and the top
and bottom go in. Take your fingers off that rubber ball, and the sides are
going to go in and the top is going to come out again."

What does this have to do with Earth? "You have material moving inside," Cox
explained. The rubber is compressed, but air is also pushed around. Some of
the post-glacial rebound is caused by the ground simply decompressing. But
scientists have long known that to account for what they've measured,
Earth's physical shape must change. Material --ground, water or air -- must
be moved around. Though the planet's shape and its gravity field are not
directly correlated, they are related.

Cox and his colleague, Benjamin Chao of Goddard, were at first baffled by
the sudden reversal and flattening of the gravity field. They considered
that ice melting at the poles and raising the overall sea level could be the
culprit. Calculations showed, however, that "you would have to drop a
10x10x5 kilometer cube of it into the ocean every year for the past five
years." Separate measurements of sea surface height from NASA's
TOPEX/Poseidon mission don't support this scenario.

Material in Earth's crust can't be responsible -- it couldn't move so
quickly from the poles to the equator. Molten rock oozing around in Earth's
core might be to blame, but data do not support such a scenario. Changes in
the atmosphere might be involved, but no data supports that being the
primary cause, either.

So what is it? Instead, Cox said, long-term circulation patterns in the
ocean seem to be the most likely cause. Shifts in huge ocean currents --
similar to El Nino but on larger scales and moving in a north-south
direction -- might transport enough water toward the equator to account for
the flattened gravity field. One such cycle is called the Pacific Decadal
Oscillation. "We have a strong suspicion that it's in the ocean," Cox said.

"Whatever the cause, the results of Cox and Chao emphasize the importance of
gravity variations as a barometer of integrated mass changes in the Earth
system," write scientists Anny Cazenave and R. Steven Nerem in an analysis
of the research for Science. "Monitoring these variations with improved
spatial and temporal resolution would provide an important tool for studying
Earth system changes."

Since Cox and Chao submitted their paper to the journal, they've continued
to look into the mystery and are more confident that the ocean is behind it
all. "But we need more data," Cox said. That data could come from NASA's
GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellite mission, which
will provide the most precise measurements ever made of Earth's gravity
field. GRACE launched in March.

10) Imperfect Estimate Claims Universe Has 70 Sextillion Stars: Astronomers
announced today that there are 70 sextillion stars in the visible universe,
or some 70 thousand million million million. That's a 7 followed by 22
zeros.

The figure paints an inadequate picture of the scope of the cosmos, however.
Other scientists have previously tried to pin down this most elusive of
astronomical numbers. The new figure is 10 times more accurate than previous
attempts, according to those who made it. Still, the researchers admit that
it is just an estimate, based on surveying only a small patch of sky. The
Universe is still boggles the minds of us 'Finite Creatures'.

"This is not the total number of stars in the universe, but it's the number
within range of our telescopes, said Simon Driver of the Australian National
University. "The real number could be much, much larger still -- some people
think it is infinite."

A previous estimate, cited by NASA, put the figure lower, a 1 followed by 21
zeros. Another NASA Web site sagely puts the count at zillions, a word that
does not represent a real figure but rather an "extremely large,
indeterminate number." That presumes we'll never really know. The new
calculation was made by studying the brightness of a few galaxies in the
relatively nearby region of the universe in one direction, in order to
estimate how many stars each held. That was extrapolated to the entire
universe.

The result is said to be more stars than there are grains of sand on all of
Earth's beaches. "Even for a professional astronomer used to dealing in
monster numbers this is mind-boggling," Driver said while presenting the
number at a meeting of the International Astronomical Union in Australia.
His research team included Jochen Liske of the Royal Observatory Edinburgh,
Nicholas Cross from Johns Hopkins University, Warrick Couch from the
University of New South Wales and David Lemon from St Andrews University.

Many factors frustrate the effort to count all the stars. Telescopes cannot
see individual stars in the most distant galaxies -- they just record blobs
of light. In fact, the structures of the most distant galaxies that have
been detected remain largely unknown. Astronomers do not know exactly when
and how rapidly stars form as a galaxy develops, nor how many stars existed
in the universe's earliest galaxies.

Further, stars are forming all the time, so the number is never fixed. Also,
when telescopes are pointed at a galaxy that is, say, 10 billion light-years
away, the light it detects left that galaxy 10 billion years ago. The galaxy
has changed greatly since then, and astronomers can only guess at how it
evolved -- and how many stars it might now contain -- by studying more
mature galaxies closer at hand.

Finally, astronomers do not know if our apparent universe is the Universe.
There may be much, much more out there that is not observable and never will
be known. If these are not enough problems, scientists even have difficulty
counting the stars in our own Milky Way Galaxy. The figure is typically put
at between 100 billion and 300 billion.

One thing is certain: We cannot see most of the stars that are out there.
Under very dark skies in remote locations on Earth, roughly 8,400 are
visible to the naked eye, globally speaking. From any given location on a
single night, about 2,500 are available to the discerning eye. Under bright
city lights, the quantity of stars visible to the unaided eye can drop to
mere dozens.

11) Sun-like Stars More Likely to Harbor Planets: Common stars like our Sun
rich in heavy elements are more likely to harbor planets, according to a new
study. The finding suggests extra solar planets might be more common than
thought, and it should help planet hunters pick their targets more
effectively.

Theorists had long said that planet formation would be more common around
stars rich in "metals," which in astronomers' parlance means anything
heavier than hydrogen and helium, the two most common elements in the
universe. The new study confirms this beyond expectations. The survey of 754
relatively nearby stars showed that the more metal a star contains the more
likely it is to harbor one or more planets. The results represent a stark
shift in the percentage of metal-rich stars now said to be potential homes
to orbiting worlds.

"Astronomers have been saying that only 5 percent of stars have planets,"
said Debra Fischer, an astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley.
"If you look at the metal-rich stars, 20 percent have planets. That's
stunning." Elements are forged in stars. The first stars in the universe
were made almost entirely hydrogen. Subsequent generations of stars contain
more and heavier elements. Our Sun, at about 4.6 billion years old, is young
compared to the universe, which is 13.7 billion years old. The Sun is fairly
metal-rich.

What does this have to do with planets? A star is born from a cloud of
material -- hydrogen and other elements. Planets form from the leftovers. If
the cloud is rich in heavy material -- metals and rock -- then it has more
of the stuff that theorists think planets require to begin their
development. "The metals are the seeds from which planets form," said
Fischer's colleague, Jeff Valenti of the Space Telescope Science Institute.

Very metal poor stars can form planets, however. One example, announced
recently, involves what is presumed to be the oldest planet in the universe.
It must have been born around one of the earliest stars -- a star with very
little metal, a separate research team said. Almost all of the 121 known
extra solar planets have been found nearby and around stars similar to the
Sun, though. Most are larger than Jupiter and made mostly of gas. But
scientists suspect they might have rocky cores. At the least, metals are
needed for the gas to properly organize into a planetary ball, theorists
say.

Stars abundant in heavy metals are five times more likely to have a
planetary companion than metal-poor stars, Fischer said. The survey included
61 stars known to have planets and 693 that do not, though further
investigation could show that some of these other stars do in fact harbor
planets that are very far away from their host star and thus hard to detect.
It is the first large-scale survey comparing stellar metalicity to planet
formation. The results were presented Monday at a meeting of the
International Astronomical Union meeting in Sydney, Australia.

Stars like the Sun, a typical star in this part of the Milky Way, have a 5
to 10 percent chance of hosting planets, the analysis showed. Stars three
times more metal-rich than the Sun have a 20 percent chance of hosting
planets, while stars with only one-third the amount of solar metalicity have
just a 3 percent chance. Fischer also is part of the world's most prolific
planet-hunting team, lead by Geoffrey Marcy at UC Berkeley and Paul Butler
of the Carnegie Institution of Washington.

"These results tell us why some of the stars in our Milky Way galaxy have
planets while others do not," Marcy said. "The heavy metals must clump
together to form rocks which themselves clump into the solid cores of
planets."

A review of Bruce Maccabee's stunning new Novel "Abductions In My
Life."
by Alfred Lehmberg

Increasingly, Ufology and its sister phenomena, the Abduction
enigma, provide a cutting edge perspective on the whole of Human
experience. As such, these perplexing anomalies are in a position to
facilitate substantive "firsts", new initiatives, or useful new
inventions. One such recent initiative is no less than the invention
of a NEW LITERARY FORM! Verily! This singular ufological *first* is
discovered in Dr. Bruce Maccabee's new book, "Abductions In My
Life," and proves to be a stunning "first time" accomplishment of
particular efficacy on any level the reader cares to name! ...No
hyperbole here!

In a new literary style Dr. Maccabee has identified as "Faction"
(Fact melded with fiction, this writer presumes), he assumes a
literary form so as the reader is able to tell, easily, plainly, and
seamlessly... what can be taken as FACT in his novel, and what can
be taken for fiction.

The reader might ask himself, "why."

Traditionally, if the writer wants to write a factual book, he
writes a factual book. If a fiction, then a fiction. Right? The
former has citation, the latter is bereft of same. Moreover, it is
the *conventional* wisdom that a writer "best serves the reader" by
writing one... or the -other-. What can be gained, the garden
variety CSICOPian might scoff, in the mixing of the two?

"Reader confusion at best," Dr. Nickels stutters. "Reader
misdirection at worst," Mr. Klass proclaims! Dr. Maccabee destroys
that arbitrary CSICOPian conventional wisdom, handily.

Consider. Most quality books of fiction are fiction -heavily- rooted
in fact. That factual foundation is what gives that work of fiction
its immediacy, its reality, and its intensity. A difficulty is
realized, though (in the service of -real- education), when the fact
and fiction slide so well together that the truths are
indistinguishable from the fantasy and the facts don't stick! It
may -ring- true, but one can't know in a Michener Novel, a Clancy
work, or a King production what -is- and what is -not- fiction. The
facts can't stick and the reader is not elevated when she -could- be
elevated!

Consider also that the book of fiction is usually more engaging and
attractive to the general reader than the tediously cited nonfiction
book. Unfortunately, most non fiction books with regard to ufology
fall into this category. They are text-books, in fact, and quality
ufological text books -are- difficult and not a little tedious to
read. As a result of the giggle factor, they try -hard- to be
serious or to be -taken- seriously... and it shows, tediously, with
all but the most gifted writer. Invariably, this translates to a
fewer number of people (by an order of magnitude!) actually -reading-
  said quality book...

Dr. Maccabee is a quality researcher with decades of close tolerance
interest in a subject that he -knows- is of far reaching importance
to us all! To get the maximum number of people involved with a
ufological research effort he knew he had to get a preponderance of
people to read "the book" -- ANY quality book.

How to get them to -do- it was the problem. Dr. Maccabee's answer
was serendipity itself.

It occurred to him that a book of entertaining fiction laced with
facts was the answer he was searching for! But how was he to make it
plain where the facts -were-? How could he make the facts as -
interesting- as the fiction. How could they intersect with the
fiction and not get -lost- in the fiction? -That- was the thorny
issue. His solution to that problem is brilliant, innovative, and
typically cutting edge. Moreover, it is highly effective, completely
accurate, and cunningly transparent!

Dr Maccabee's literary protagonist is no less than a dyed-in-the-
wool skeptic. Like many of that persuasion he was duped by polite
society into believing that all things ufological were the province
of the *misinformed*, the *mentally aberrated*, or the criminally
*misinforming* (the "M"-cubed crowd). In other words, UFOs were the
result of patent ignorance, irresponsible drug use, or the efforts
of the odd unethical scalawag!

Only!

Anything else was anti-science and lop-eared lunacy! Anyone with
any -sense- knew that to be true! Noted CSICOPian Dr. Shermer had
proclaimed it! The protagonist, reader, was initially of that mind!

Chance puts this intelligently hard-nosed protagonist in contact
with a very believable key adjacent character who doesn't seem to
fit -anywhere- in the duplicitous "M"-cubed triad of the preceding
paragraph. As the story unfolds and as an innocent favor to this
character, the protagonist does some necessary in-depth ufological
research on the way to some really eye-opening self-realization!
Cleverly, Maccabee's *invention* of fact/fiction presentation (and
the clarity of separation between them) occurs as a result of the
research the -protagonist- undertakes -enroute- to his ufological
denouement and outdated paradigm shattering enlightenment! Key
sections of the research books are written -INTO- the story with all
their footnotes and citations! As the protagonist reads, the reader
of Dr. Maccabee's novel reads over the protagonist's shoulder -- is
along for the ride, so to speak. And what a ride it is. Double "A"
tickets, reader!

The protagonist breaks frequently for illuminating inner dialogue,
and in that dialogue something very wonderful happens! In a step by
step process, and as a result of reading the quality research
material, the protagonist is rationally transformed (transforms
himself!) from a knee-jerk idle skepti-bunky into a critical and
informed "believer" (so to speak), but a believer in the best sense
of that word! -This- writer is -unaware- of where that "awakening
process" has been traced out, explored, or otherwise dealt with in
any -other- work of fact or fiction. The fact that Dr. Maccabee has
accomplished it here (for what this writer believes to be the first
time!) is fortuitous, seminal, and a validating god send! The
result? Humankind turns a philosophical -corner- with this book!

There -is- an actual and rational path to the reader's OWN
ufological enlightenment! Anyone -can- go there! Maccabee shows
where the rocks -are- across that turbulent ufological stream!

As the novel's protagonist is transformed, educated, informed ...
enlightened... so too is the reader over his shoulder -- and in the
same manner! The reader -becomes- the protagonist... and
consequently (!), denial... well-- it just becomes another river in
the middle east.

Additionally, the characters are drawn real enough to give a damn
about, credible enough to believe in, and inventively intelligent
enough to provide a stealthy education! They are genuine persons,
reader, in -direct- contact with the inexplicable and unknown... and
once again, they are people that are going to have to wing a
response to the high strangeness... on their own and of their
individual volition! ...Just like the -reader- would have to...

It's a damn fine read, folks! It's a science fiction novel for the
person that doesn't like science fiction novels or fiction novels
period. It's a work of fiction for the person that likes a great
fiction, without a doubt! People I gave it too couldn't put it
down. ...But there's an *education* that slips in the back door of
Dr. Maccabee's book, good reader, and it's an education enough to
make that rip-roaring fiction held in interestedly trembling hands
an actual -reality- after all! -Though- a fiction? It's a -true-
story!

To paraphrase the good Doctor's book, here's hoping that they -can-
be friendly. They're the future after all. Contact Dr. Maccabee for
a copy at: http://brumac.8k.com/contact.html , and -prepare- for
that future!

Telephone conversation with witness. (HBCC UFO)

This report below came to me from Sue Darroch, Director of ParaResearchers -
Ontario. http://www.pararesearchers.org/
You can make your Ontario sighting report to ParaResearchers using their on-line
report form.

I telephoned a gentleman who resides in Penticton, British Columbia to do a
phone interview to gather information on a sighting he had back in 1964 while
driving south through Nevada, United States in the winter time. While he was
traveling in between the towns of Beatty and Tonopah this is when he observed
out of the corner of his eye, a spoke shaped object coming up from behind him,
off to his left and flying at a very low attitude. As the witness said, he did
not have to look way up to see it, but just over to his left and tilted his head
slightly up to see the object.

A few more details as to how the sighting came about.

The witnesses mother had drove down to Tonopah, United States from Trail,
British Columbia with friends to visit their married daughter who was living in
Tonopah, as her husband was stationed at an airbase there.

The witness who had the sighting left British Columbia to pick up his mother in
Tonopah after she had her visit with friends to bring her back home. As he left
Death Valley traveling to Tonopah by himself he saw something to his left out of
the corner of his eye. (HBCC UFO Note: At this point at the sighting it was
around 5:00 p.m. and it was just at sunset). The witness said he was shocked to
see a wheel shaped object traveling quickly low in the sky, not making a sound
and had a dull silver color to it. The witness said the best description I can
give me today was that it looked just as if someone was looking at a wheel chair
with the big spokes inside the wheel. He also said it was revolving just like a
Farris Wheel would do in a clock wise rotation. He again stressed to me that he
did not have to look way up in the sky to see it, but rather look to his left
and up slightly as mentioned above. He also told me it was very spooky to see
such a sight as it flew by him, he then pulled over to the side of the road to
really have a good look at it, and he also grabbed his 8mm camera in hopes of
trying to catch a picture of it. As the object passed him he noted that it left
a large spiral jet trail behind it. Due to his amazement of the whole event, and
due to the speed the object was traveling at, he missed talking some footage of
the craft, but did catch the jet trail it did leave behind. (HBCC UFO Note:
Photos are posted at my website under United States Sighting Reports).

The fellow said the photos are not top notch, but at least it was a record of
the event. The witness was heading towards the north, so the object was also
heading north and then off to the west. He also stated that the object was as
big as your average sized Ferris wheel for sure. He said the whole event may
have lasted for about 20 seconds, but was not really sure to the actual amount
of time when he first caught sight of it.

After speaking with the witness for sometime I did find him to be a very
credible witness. I also thanked him very much for telling me the story and
sending along the photos. The two photos of the jet trail were taken off 8mm and
place to VHS format. Ran on television and then a friend of the witness snapped
two shots with his digital camera off the T.V.

Again my thanks to Sue Darroch, Director of ParaResearchers - Ontario for
sending me the information.

Barrhead, Alberta

Date: 1960 (late fall)
Time: Approx: 9:30 p.m.

I talked on the telephone with a really nice lady who now is living in southern
British Columbia. Her and her husband are originally from Barrhead, Alberta a
town some 70 miles northwest from Edmonton. One night on their farm while out
doing their chores, milking the cows, etc. in the late fall. Their hay field was
directly west of the barn and when their son at the time was 7 years old and was
standing looking into the field, he said. Daddy, there is a stop light sitting
in the grain field. As they turned to look they all saw a softball sized,
brilliant red light/object sitting just over the tops of the grain. As they
watched the object moved slowly and along the way it changed it's color to white
and then finally green. The witness told me they had to have watched this event
for approx: 20 minutes as the children had time to run back to the house and
call the grandparents to come outside and watch what was taking place. The
light/object kept up a steady pace over the fields. The family now watching the
object through binoculars until they all lost sight of it in the far distance.
It at times changing direction as it moved along.

Thank you to the witness for the report.

Barrhead, Alberta

Date: 1960 (Summer)
Time: 11:00 p.m.

The same lady who reported the sighting above told me of another report. There
was a dance which took place at the Barrhead town hall one evening. Many folks
were in attendance. All of a sudden the lights burned out and everyone stood
watching five objects hovering over a power sub station. She also said that many
pictures were taken of the objects sitting in the sky, and most likely some of
the photos could be found if someone was to go looking, or asking area residents
who lived there at the time.

Thank you to the lady for the report.

Founder & Director, Advanced Energy Laboratories,
Vancouver, B.C., Canada, JOHN KENNETH HUTCHISON
is credited with the discovery of a highly-anomalous
electromagnetic effect which causes the:

*Levitation of heavy objects

*Jellification of metals

*Fusion of dissimilar materials such as metal
and wood (exactly as portrayed in the movie, "The
Philadelphia Experiment")

*Anomalous heating of metals without burning
adjacent material

*Spontaneous fracturing of metals (which separate by
sliding in a
sideways fashion)

*Both temporary and permanent changes in the
crystalline structure and physical properties of
metals

*Other effects resulting from what is believed to
be a very complex scalar-wave interaction between
electromagnetic fields and matter.

SCISAT READY FOR LAUNCH TUESDAY
Aug 11, 2003 - Everything is ready to go for the launch of the Canadian Space
Agency's Scientific Satellite Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (SCISAT-1) on
board a Pegasus XL rocket on Wednesday, August 13. If it all goes as planned,
the L-1011 aircraft will carry the Pegasus rocket over the Pacific Ocean, and
release it at 0210 GMT (10:10 pm EDT Tuesday) to carry SCISAT into orbit. SCISAT
will help scientists track the chemical processes that control the distribution
of ozone in the Earth's atmosphere.

SPACESHIPONE COMPLETES FIRST DROP TEST
Aug 11, 2003 - Scaled Composite's SpaceShipOne completed its first glide test on
Thursday, after it was released from the White Knight aircraft at an altitude of
14,300 metres. The X-Prize candidate was taken through a series of tests in the
air, and then landed at a runway in the Mojave desert. Since it was unveiled in
April, 2003, SpaceShipOne is considered one of the front runners to win the $10
million X-Prize for the first privately-built spacecraft to reach an altitude of
100 km twice within 2 weeks.

COSMONAUT TIES THE KNOT FROM SPACE
Aug 11, 2003 - Cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko married his fiancé, Ekaterina
Dmitriev, on Sunday, but it wasn't a normal ceremony. Dimitriev was in Houston
while Malenchenko hurtled 385 kilometres above on the International Space
Station. The couple took advantage of Texas law, which allows weddings to take
place even if one person isn't present. The Russian Aerospace Agency tried to
block the wedding in the beginning, but eventually backed down, and gave the
couple their blessing.

Hi Guys & Gals

The below newspaper article is from a sighting that took place in southeastern
British Columbia. I am also working on the case and I believe the same newspaper
will be running another article really quick as the newspaper did call me
yesterday.

Take care

Coming In The Air Tonight

By Carolyn Grant
Townsman Bulletin Newspaper
Kimberly, British Columbia
Tuesday, July 29, 2003 (Page 3)

Kimberly -- Did anyone in the Wycliffe - St. Mary Lake area see something
strange in the sky late Saturday night, early Sunday morning? Rhonda Brass of
Cranbrook would like to know, because she saw something she can only describe as
an unidentified flying object.

Rhonda and her family were camping at St. Mary Lake over the weekend. At about
12:45 a.m. on Sunday, she and her husband took a walk on the road near the old
cabin.

"The kids were sleeping and we wanted to take a few minutes to admire the
stars," Rhonda said. "We saw a bright, white light coming from over top of
Bootleg Mountain, about 4,000 to 5,000 feet. But then we realized that there was
no noise and the light was really bright and much bigger than the light on an
airplane."
Rhonda says the light travelled across the lake and seemed to vary speed."

"It would go fast, then slow and it was zigzagging a bit, almost like a wobble.
I know it wasn't a satellite, it was far lower down and it definitely wasn't a
shooting star.

"All you could see was the light. It was like when you see Venus at night, just
as bright, only 10 times bigger."
Rather than being unnerved by the sight, Rhonda said that she used her big
flashlight to try and signal whatever it was.

"It was really neat. It didn't scare me.I was quite impressed. I would have
loved to meet whoever it was. After it was out of sight I said to my husband, 'I
think we've just seem our first UFO'".

Rhonda called the Cranbrook airport to see if any planes were in the area at
that time. There were none. Cpl. Rod Caronneau of the Kimberly RCMP said the
Detachment received no calls. "Usually that type of thing draws a lot of
attention," he said.

Rhonda Brass would be very interested to know if anyone else saw it. "Both my
husband and I saw it. We weren't drinking. I would really like to know what it
was."

FREE SKY MAPS UPDATED MONTHLY
Aug 12, 2003 - With Mars approaching, people have been a lot more interested in
getting to know their night sky. One of the best resources for this is a website
called Skymaps.com. It offers a free map of the night sky from both the Northern
and Southern hemispheres which you can download and print off each month. It
also has a calendar of astronomy-related events happening for the month and a
list of objects which are visible with the naked eye/binoculars/telescope. The
best thing to do is sign up for the monthly newsletter so you're notified as
soon as a new map is ready.

AMATEUR SPOTS A GAMMA RAY BURST AFTERGLOW
Aug 12, 2003 - Berto Monard, an amateur astronomer from South Africa was lucky
enough to spot the afterglow from a powerful gamma-ray burst - beating
professional astronomers to the target. The 40-second-long burst was discovered
by NASA's HETE spacecraft, which provided Monard rough coordinates of where to
look. He was able to provide the astronomy community with a precise location so
they can follow up days or weeks later to try and determine what actually caused
the explosion.

FORMATION OF STARS IS ON THE DECLINE
Aug 12, 2003 - The age of star formation in the Universe is drawing to a close,
according to a new report from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. A team of
astronomers analyzed the colour of an enormous number of nearby galaxies and
found that they contained less young stars than more distant galaxies. Since
light takes so long to travel, the more distant galaxies are seen as they
appeared many billion years ago. The number of new stars being formed has been
on the decline since about 6 billon years ago, when our own Sun formed.

NEW CLASSIFICATION FOR DISTANT SOLAR SYSTEM OBJECTS
Aug 12, 2003 - Astronomers are working on a new way to classify the objects that
inhabit the outer solar system. Currently there's some confusion between comets,
Centaurs, trans-Neptunian objects, Kuiper Belt Objects, etc. The new scheme
classifies objects by their distance from the Sun, and then by the angle they
make with the plane of the ecliptic. Hopefully this will help astronomers trace
the history and predict the future for different kinds of objects.
