YUKON: Territory tops in spotting UFOS: investigator

WHITEHORSE. There are more unidentified flying objects sighted in the
Yukon than anywhere else in Canada, says a UFO investigator. Just last
weekend, two sightings were reported to Martin Jasek, one of two UFO
investigators in the territory.

"The people I interview are very sincere and they seem normal to me," Mr.
Jasek said. "What's so nice about the Yukon is that everybody knows
everybody, so you often get one story, and then they say, 'Oh, I know so
and so, who saw something,' and it just keeps going and going."

Mr. Jasek works for the federal government by day. But he has been a UFO
investigator for about two years and has investigated about 40 sightings.
Only recently did he see what might have been a UFO during a trip in
Manitoba.

"I was driving down the freeway, and this white ball came up between the
trees," he said, calling the incident "pretty minor compared to some of

Focus-Russia Reports Computer Malfunction on Mir

MOSCOW, Aug 1 (Reuters) - A malfunction forced the crew of Russia's Mir space
station to turn off the main computer and the craft was operating on a back-up
guidance system, mission control said on Sunday.

"The crew discovered in time that there was a problem and switched (the
computer) off," a mission control officer said.

He said the malfunction had happened on Friday and was not dangerous. The crew
would probably try to switch the computer back on Monday.

"It's trivial, there's nothing to worry about," he said. "Everybody here is
taking the day off and relaxing."

The crew aboard Mir is due to return to earth next month, leaving the station
unmanned. Russia has said it may return to Mir if it finds more funds for the
programme, but Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov said last month that Mir had
fulfilled its goals and should be abandoned gracefully.

Barring the sudden appearance of the roughly $250 million needed to keep the
station aloft for another year, Mir will probably be guided out of orbit to
crash into the Pacific Ocean by early 2000.

The mission control officer said the main computer was used in part to keep the
station pointed in the right direction, ensuring that its solar power panels
aimed toward the sun and generated electricity for life support systems.

But he said backup guidance systems were keeping the station's alignment correct
and the solar panels were producing more than sufficient power.

The Mir station, for years the pride of Russia's space programme, suffered
several major mishaps in recent years, although it has functioned reliably for
several months.

The United States wants Russia to abandon Mir to focus its resources on the
International Space Station, which is scheduled to receive its first crew next
year.

Russia is using its experience with Mir, the world's only functioning space
station, to build key parts of the $60 billion new station, including the main
living quarters. But Moscow has run into several months of delays.

Spacecraft begins transmitting infrared images of asteroid

PASADENA, California (AP) -- A NASA spacecraft that made the closest flyby ever
of an asteroid has sent mission controllers infrared images of the asteroid,
though it failed to capture closeup pictures.

The Deep Space 1 probe, which flew within an estimated 10 miles of the Asteroid
Braille on Wednesday, began transmitting data from its infrared camera on
Friday, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said.

Four black-and-white images were taken by the spacecraft's camera -- two about
70 minutes before its closest approach and two of poorer quality about 15
minutes after the encounter more than 117 million miles from Earth.

The spacecraft was unsuccessful in capturing close-ups of the giant orbiting
rock because of a failure to aim the spacecraft's camera correctly. Pictures
sent back showed only empty space.

The barrel-shaped, 8-foot spacecraft was launched in October and designed
primarily to test new forms of technology for future deep-space flights. The
mission costs $152 million.

Deep Space 1 will remain functional when its prime mission officially ends Sept.
18, and could fly by two comets in 2001 if an extended mission is funded.

CHANDRA BOOSTS TO HIGHER ORBIT

In the first of five orbital maneuvers it will make, the Chandra
X-Ray observatory boosted its orbit so that the high point would
take it nearly 68,000 kms away from the Earth (1/3 of the distance
to the moon). Controllers have been systematically activating the
observatory's systems with great success.

COLUMBIA FUEL LEAK CAUSE FOUND

It turns out a loose pin from one of the Space Shuttle Columbia's
engines possibly caused the fuel leak shortly after launch last week.
Gold-plated, and only 1-inch long, the pin was knocked from its tube
from the force of the engines firing, where it punched a hole in
the engine nozzle.

Rohrabacher's beef is that a vast number of American tax dollars are being
spent on commercial aerospace projects - especially in the space field -
that already have a direct, but hidden, equivalent in the black world.

"If we have a functioning technology in a black program, we should not be
spending billions of dollars on a similar program that's visible to the
public," Rohrabacher says.  A likely example of this duplication, he
maintains, is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's X-33
program.

The X-33 is a demonstrator vehicle being built by Lockheed Martin for a
satellite launcher that will take off like a rocket and land like a plane.
If it works as advertised, its operating costs will be a fraction of the
Space Shuttle's, which it is due to replace.

Last year, Rohrabacher wrote to Clinton requesting that the administration
declassify secret projects that perpetuate this overlap in spending.  The
project which overlaps with the X-33, he believes, is "Aurora", a black
program of mythical proportions to a hard-core of "watchers" who scour
budget books, as well as the skies, for evidence of topsecret defence
projects.

Aurora is perceived to be a "family" of very fast high-flying aircraft, the
most sophisticated of which can effectively fly through space in the same
way that the X-33 is designed to.  It was first spotted in 1987 as a
mysterious line-item, consuming several billion dollars in that year alone,
in the reconnaissance section of the air force's budget request.  Several
eople claim to have seen it since the late '80s, the best apparent sighting
coming from a trained Royal Observer Corps "spotter" who saw a huge wedge-
shaped aircraft overflying the North Sea oil-rig on which he was working in
1989.

If Aurora exists - and Congressman Rohrabacher is fairly sure it does - it
can most likely cross the Atlantic in something under 45 minutes.  As yet,
Rohrabacher has had no response to his letter to Clinton and, if history is
anything to go by, he may have a long wait.

The trail now led west, to the vast expanses of Nevada and the mythical
nexus of black world aerospace development - the US Air Force's Groom Lake
testing facility, otherwise known as Area 51.

For the past 45 years, Area 51 has been a test centre for topsecret
aircraft such as the U-2, the Blackbird and the Stealth Fighter.  In more
recent times, it has also become a mecca for UFO watchers convinced the US
Government is testing captured alien spacecraft there.

One of the first individuals I met on the road to Area 51 was Bob Widmer, a
former head of design at General Dynamics Convair, now in his 80s.  Late in
the '50s, Widmer worked on an extraordinary spyplane design for the CIA
that was codenamed "Fish".  In the end, Fish lost out to its rival,
Lockheed's Blackbird, but for a reason that has never been altogether
explained, the details of Widmer's design remain top-secret, long after the
Blackbird fleet was consigned to air museums across America.

Could it be that Fish, whose general characteristics sound resoundingly
familiar today, was actually a secret prototype for the Aurora?

We may never know.  Widmer was forced to burn almost all the plans for Fish
and was told by the CIA to take the details of the project to his grave.
And few Americans have ever disclosed their black world activities.

Area 51 is encased within a closed-off piece of government land the size of
Switzerland, so gazing into it is impossible unless you're prepared to
scale some of the peaks on public land - the nearest of which is about 40km
away - that give a restricted view on to its desolate runway, scattered
hangars and buildings.

occasionally, watchers see something strange hovering over the base, but
Groom Lake, which is 160km north of Las Vegas in the midst of the desert,
is the kind of place where you see what you want to see; where one man's
UFO is another man's Stealth Bomber.

investigators such as Alaskan Mark Farmer, for whom the study of classified
programs is an all-consuming hobby, we know enough about the realworld
activities of Groom Lake not to have to credit extra terrestrials for what
happens there.

"They do business differently at Area 51," Farmer says, speaking from his
vantage-point near the base.  "Out here we enjoy all the rights and
privileges of citizens under the US constitution.  But if you pass that
borderline, all that ends."

There is substantial evidence that the US Air Force has tested something
like Aurora at Area 51 in recent years and that it is now working on a new
generation of stealth aircraft there.  Stealth technology was originally
developed late in the '70s as a means of shielding aircraft,from radar, but
it is now moving into a whole new realm of sophistication.  Before he
retired last year the US Air Force's head of acquisition, Lt-Gen George
Muellner confirmed they were experimenting with technology to make aircraft
invisible to the human eye.

one method is to coat them with a "smart skin", not dissimilar to the
liquid-crystal displays used in laptop computers, that would mimic the
plane's background, chameleonstyle.  From above, the aircraft would blend
into the ground or the sea; from below, it would take on the same colour as
the sky, making it all but disappear into the ether.

Muellner justifies the need for black programs on the grounds it is still a
dangerous world, despite the demise of the Soviet Union.

"The technologies that are developed in the black world need to be
continued to be matured, and when the time is right brought forward in the
form of weapons systems to maintain our technological edge," he says.

The Pentagon, unlike other national defence institutions, has never been
constrained by what scientists say is technologically possible or
impossible - and it has the resources to turn its dreams into reality.

Given Area 51's recently acquired infamy (thanks to its starring role in
the blockbuster movie Independence Day) it is likely that America's most
sensitive military technologies are now being tested at some even more
discreet location deep within the closed-off Nevada complex.

If the truth is out there, it's probably way too distant now for anyone to
tell whether it's a flying saucer or their tax-dollars out for a spin.

Yukon UFO Investigator Kept Busy

                 WHITEHORSE (CP) -- There are more unidentified flying objects
sighted in the Yukon than anywhere else in Canada, says a UFO investigator.

                 Just last weekend two sightings were reported to Martin Jasek,
one of two UFO investigators in the territory.

                 Jasek and his neighbour both belong to Vancouver-based UFO B.C.
and both investigate sightings.

                 "The people I interview are very sincere and they seem normal to
me," said Jasek. "What's so nice about the Yukon is that everybody knows
everybody, so you often get one story, and then they say, 'Oh, I know so and so,
who saw something,' and it just keeps going and going."

                 Jasek works for the federal water resources branch by day. But
in his spare time he chases stories of the unknown objects.

                 "When I was growing up as a kid, I was always fascinated by
outer space, and then I went to university and became a little bit more
skeptical," he said.

                 But some television programs on the subject sparked his interest
again.

                 He has been a UFO investigator for about two years and has
investigated about 40 sightings, but only recently did he see what might have
been a UFO during a trip in Manitoba.

                 "I was driving down the freeway, and this white ball came up
between the trees," said Jasek.

                 The ball was about a third of the size of the moon, and it
disappeared behind the trees, he said.

                 "That's pretty minor compared to some of the stories we do get,"
he added.

                 Jasek recalls one man who was working on Montana Mountain near
Carcross in 1988.

                 The man was staying on the mountain with his dog, when one
night, a big saucer came upon him casting blue light all over.

                 The man's dog got scared and hid under a bed, and after the
saucer left, the man wrote the incident up in his work journal.

                 "I think the world should know what's actually going on, how
extensive the sightings are, how common they are," he said. "They're not just

Earth's Changing Orbit
Explains Ice Ages

                 WASHINGTON - An old theory about why ice ages occur when they do
may actually be right, a U.S. researcher said on Thursday.

                 He said variations in the Earth's orbit around the Sun could
explain why ice ages, which occur about every 100,000 years, have not been more
regular.

                 "The earth circles the sun every year in an orbit that becomes
either more elliptical or less elliptical over tens of thousands of years," Jose
Rial, a professor of geophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, said in a statement.

                 "Variations in the orbit over time chiefly account for the ice
ages as differing amounts of sunlight warm the planet."

                 The shift from circular to elliptical and back is one of several
known long-term changes in the Earth's orbit known as Milankovich variations.

                 They are named after Serbian astronomer-mathematician Milutin
Milankovitch, whose theories about ice age timings were accepted from the 1920s
until about 30 years ago.

                 The variation in the orbit, known as "eccentricity," has two
cycles " one every 100,000 years and one every 413,000 years. But while the
100,000-year cycle shows up in studies of ancient climate " taken from glacial
ice-core samples, old sediments and elsewhere " there has been no evidence of
the 413,000-year cycle.

                 Writing in the journal Science, Rial said he found it and may
thus have exonerated Milankovitch.

                 He looked at isotopes, or variants, of oxygen found by drilling
into the sea floor. Such "heavy" oxygen is found more commonly when it is cold.

                 Rial found evidence of both the 100,000 and 413,000 year cycles,
but said they were not so easy to spot because the two "interfered" with each
other in much the same way that interfering with radio waves " a process known
as modulation " allows broadcasters to send information in the form of sound.

                 He said the pattern looked like an FM (frequency modulated)
radio wave.

                 He does not know the physical mechanism behind this but says it
helps explain why the ice ages seemed to occur at irregular intervals.

                 Other experts had suggested that changes in the plane of the
earth's orbit, or periodic dipping into a dust ring that also circles the sun,
might have triggered ice ages. "Understanding the climate of the recent
geological past is important because finding out how Earth's environment has
transformed heat from the sun into climate variations can help predict future
global climate change," Rial said.

                 Description - Frass Meteorite - alien flying insect "Blindy"


                 This Martian "fly" represents one of the life forms that came
from the interior of the Frass Meteorite. It is shown above next to a stick pin,
so that you may judge the size of this unique object. This object must be more
than 13 million years old, the age of the gray portion of the Frass Meteorite
since it represents part of the contents of one of the vesicles of this rock. It
is not fossilized, it is the actual dead animal. Particles found near this
object have been K/Ar dated at 49 million years old. This object was probably
alive during the time when Mars still had an ocean and an atmosphere and I am
guessing its age at 40 to 45 million years old. It is still covered with fine
particles of the Martian ocean bed, where sand and gentle water coated this
object after it died. This object shows that Mars had enough atmosphere to
support flying insects, and that Mars still had liquid water after its death..

                 "Blindy" the insect

                 This object has three body parts and six legs, much like
terrestrial insects. However, the object doesn't seem to have any eyes or other
specialization on its head, except for the two large antennae and something
hanging down on the bottom of its head.. Another object from the Frass Meteorite
(Spidy) that still has its head intact, also doesn't appear to have any eyes. My
guess, at this point, is that the Martian atmosphere was pretty thick and hazy
and not much light actually made it to the surface of Mars and thus eyes, as we
know them, never developed on Mars. Maybe instead of the red planet, we might
need to call Mars the dark planet. As you can see, this object is covered with
sand. There is even a fine layer of sand between the wings, which tells me the
object was completely submersed in water at some point. There appear to be two
large wings and two small wings which are white or crystalline in color. The
wings have cilia projecting from their edges. The body parts and head are all
shiny black. You can see a little of the shine coming through in the pictures
above, but under my microscope, the entire body has this shiny black surface.
The legs are gold or yellow in color and the rear pair extend past the length of
the body. Each leg appears to have a hook on the end. The middle pair are
hanging down in the right picture above and the front pair are folded next to
the body. My microscope can not detect a mouth, but there is a fine line that
goes across the head part in the proper place and there are some "hair like"
appendages that seem to stick down in this same area. This appendage can be seen
in the close-up of the head in the center picture above. It may have absorbed
its nutrients through these appendages, rather than having a "mouth." The
antennae start in the middle of the head and travel in a parallel line up the
head, before they "turn" and head off in each direction. Each antennae is larger
at the ends than where it attaches to the head. There appears to be fine cilia
on the antennae. All of these observations are made by looking at this object
for a few days through my microscope which has a maximum magnification of about
90X. Of course, these are all my early opinions, the object is covered in sand,
my microscope and tools are limited, and so my opinions are subject to change
upon additional evidence and better magnification.


                 I'm looking for people who can evaluate their own evidence,
believe in their own abilities, and don't need a meteorite "expert" to tell them
what to believe. This rock represents a new type of meteorite made from active
volcanoes on other planets and qualifies as a meteorite because it fell from the
sky, not because a meteorite "expert" proclaimed it to be a "meteorite."


                 Highesr bidder will be allowed to make a 10% deposit with Ebay
and examine the object for one month, before deciding if it is from Mars and
whether it represents a unique object or not. If you determine that it is not
from Mars, then all money and the "flying insect" will be returned. If after 30

                 Some of the evidence the Frass Meteorite is from Mars includes:

                 * Appeared one day in a place that it had never been before and
which doesn't have volcanic rocks.

                 * Collected by a competent observer who was familiar with
meteorites.

                 * Two of five elemental oxides chemistry tests show "Martian" by
all accounts. These two samples represents the contents of the Frass Meteorite
and were selected because I thought they would most resemble the measurements
made by the Pathfinder, while it was still working on Mars. The two tests which
the meteorite "experts" claim as terrestrial, moved into terrestrial territory
because the samples represent some of the last volcanic activity on Mars,
represent side vent expulsions rather than main vent expulsions, and represent
material that has been made in the wake of living organisms, which tend to
concentrate certain elements.

                 * All five elemental oxides tests map in a linear fashion
throughout every combination of elements. This means that the meteorite and all
of its contents come from the same source material and thus the same volcano.
The five tests represent the entire range of values as shown on Earth. Thus the
tests indicate that the same volcanic system was active for a minimum of tens of
millions of years, and was probably active the entire history of Mars.

                 * The youngest rock has the "oldest" chemistry. The gray rock
portion of the Frass Meteorite was created only 13 million years ago, yet its
chemistry shows that it hasn't been melted as much as the other material. The
rock that became the gray portion of the Frass Meteorite was originally created
in the giant flows that occurred in the early days of the volcano, probably more
than a billion years ago. Then, as the volcano began to "die" it began venting
material through side vents. This would involve remelting the older rock,
thereby resetting its K/Ar date. This is how the youngest rock could have the
oldest chemistry, older than the other pieces of volcanic debris inside the
Frass Meteorite.

                 * The core sample shows the rock is made of numerous vesicles of
varying size, each of which is filled with what appears to be ocean bottom
material comprised of sand, clay, and numerous debris of the bodies of once
living creatures. The rock is so delicate that I was able to drive a 1/2 inch
piece of copper tubing through more than half the meteorite to retrieve these
core samples. Every vesicle wall is coated with the sandy material, apparently
melted there by the flow of hot lava.

                 * Nothing inside has been touched since the day it was captured
by the flowing lava.

                 * The Frass Meteorite looks like many of the rocks we see on
Mars. Many of these rocks are abnormally round in shape, many have large
crevices, many have red streaks through them, and they all have butterscotch
colored sand in the outer vesicles. On the Frass Meteorite, the butterscotch
colored sand has actually been fused into the outer vesicles by the heat of
entry through our atmosphere. The Frass Meteorite shows all of the
characteristics listed above.

                 * The entire outer (exposed) surface of the Frass Meteorite is
melted. The meteorite experts say that the rock doesn't have enough melting and
it isn't the right color. I would say that since the surface area of this rock
is many times the surface area of "flat" meteorites, that the rock shows the
proper amount of melting for its structure, composition, shape, and flight
characteristics. Three geologist have said it is melted and all lay people who
look can see the fusion crust. The fusion crust is mainly visible on those parts
of the rock that stick out the most. The fusion crust color varies depending
upon the type of rock that was melted. Most of the fusion crust is kind of a
purple color, some is brown, some is black, some is red, and some is
butterscotch colored. All things a reasonable person would expect.

                 * Magnetic dust is contained within the sand and clay contents
of the vesicles of the Frass Meteorite. It is the same color as the magnetic
dust collected by Pathfinder on Mars.

                 * The rock doesn't appear to have been in the presence of water
since the gray portion of the rock was made 13 million years ago.

                 * The angular nature of much of the sand and particles that have
come from within the Frass Meteorite clearly show that this very old material
has not been in the presence of enough water to round off the rough edges. Many
pieces of the older lava particles show to have been under water, yet they are
still so delicate one can break them with a finger nail. This material could
never have survived more than 50 million years on Earth.

                 * The age of the Frass Meteorite parts are now very much in line
with NASA's own conclusions that Mars probably had active volcanoes as little as
40 million years ago. The ocean of Mars was probably very much tied to the
activity of these old volcanoes, since they kept the ocean and atmosphere
resupplied with water and other gasses. I suspect that the 49 million year old
red rock actually sat in the ocean and later the ocean retreated and left them
exposed.

                 * Evidence from the meteorite shows that 36 million years passed
between the red flow and the gray flow. During this time, less than 1/16th of an
inch of "dust" appeared. The red rocks appeared to have been on the surface of
Mars, when they were covered by the gray rock, yet in that extended time, almost
nothing happened. This is what one would expect of the Mars that we know today.

                 * Small glass particles found in the outer vesicles show that
the rock was heated past 1000 degrees F., after the sand was deposited. The best
explanation is that these vesicles were heated to this extent while the rock was
coming through our atmosphere, after it had collected the sand on Mars. There is
no terrestrial explanation.

                 * The delicate nature of the rock and its contents are proof of
its creation under a weak gravitational field. Any of the inside material can be
broken with a finger nail. (This explains why so many rocks on Mars are round.
They are very brittle and the slightest movement breaks off the thin walls
between the vesicles along the outer surfaces, causing them to become round.)
The outside is slightly harder on the Frass Meteorite, since it was melted
during its travel through our atmosphere, but all of the rock is very delicate
and could be broken into a million pieces by throwing it hard against a concrete
surface. You can't tell me that a rock this delicate could survive on Earth for
more than 13 million years without being completely destroyed by natural events.
I have the evidence that this rock is extraterrestrial, I just don't have the
"opinions" of the meteorite "experts."

                 Dear Mr. Rense,

                 I read your article on this supposed meteor from Mars containing
a bug. While it did incite a grin from me I can't possibly believe someone would
be foolish enough to buy this item. Perhaps the seller is hoping that no one
will notice his inconsistancies and someone will give him that ten percent down
so he can take it and vanish. He states the experts say it is not a meteor but
is still billing it as such. He goes on to state the one thing that any logical
person would see makes this item something other than a meteor. He says the
"meteor" is so soft he was able to drive copper tubing into it and that the
inside material will flake and crumble at the touch of a fingernail.

                 Now, perhaps I am wrong and someone can correct me on this but,
wouldn't a material that brittle,delicate, whatever word you wish to describe it
as, simply vaporize on impact? I mean let's look at it this way you drop a glass
bottle >from a high enough height and it will go through a car. Will there be
much of the bottle left?? My guess is no not much of the bottle will remain as
much of it would be instantly turned into a fine powder upon impact. I would
suppose therefore that material soft enough to use copper tubing to get core
samples >from and that broke from a fingernail touch would do the same as the
bottle. If you choose to post this as a response perhaps a more knowledgeable
reader to the site could provide answers as to wether my thinking is terribly
incorrect or pretty much correct.

Overlooked Israeli
Strange Phenomena

                 Here's a good reason why reporting on UFOs, though a non-profit
cause in the short run, has its longterm rewards. Every now and then someone
reads the reports and offers unique opportunities that enrich a person's
existence. Such was the case this week when a documentary crew preparing a film
about the history of giants for the Discovery Channel arrived in Israel to tape
a segment based on my research connected to the subject. I had the pleasure, and
it really was fun, of accompanying producer Alexander Brown and director Charles
Wilkinson up and down the country for interviews, during the course of which,
significant new information emerged which has been overlooked until now. Two
outstanding examples are:

                 Genetic Alterations In Yatzitz - Probably the most convincing
proof that UFO-related giants visited Israel for two years beginninng in 1993,
was the incident at Yatzitz. In January 1995, Herzl Consantini and Danny Ezra
witnessed a nine foot robotic giant which left 8.5 kilometers of impossibly deep
boot tracks in its wake. I thought I had previously covered the encounter from
every angle, but I had, in fact, missed a profoundly important detail which
Herzl revealed in his interview this week.

                 Fruit trees which grew beside the giant tracks produced weird
genetically altered products the summer following the incident. Herzl rummaged
through his records and found newspapers of the time to back up his claim:
Charles Wilkinson filmed the relevant pages. They showed Herzl holding a
four-headed nectarine, as an example of the bizarre alterations to trees
affected by the passing of the giant.

                 The Haunting Of Bet Zarzir - In April 1998, Golan Marzuk
discovered and photographed Israel's first thoroughly investigated crop
formation. The pictogram was formed in a wheat field beside his village and it
was a symetrical 27 metres by 27 metres umbrella-shaped image.

                 Since the incident, the village, whose population is Druze, a
rather secretive offshoot of Islam, has reported continuing aftershocks. In each
case up until his interview this week on July 20/99, animals became very noisy
and agitated before a misty image appeared before different villagers. Marzuk
described the images as, "human in appearance but either small, half the size of
a normal man, or large, one and a half to two times larger. They were seen just
outside the homes of three of my relatives and were hazy, like they were formed
of cigarette smoke. People in the village are very upset by all this but it is
not in our nature to reveal such things to outsiders. I've become very
interested in UFOs since I photographed our crop formation and want other people
to have the knowledge as it emerges from our village."

UK WILL LAND A PROBE ON MARS

The British government has backed a plan to land a probe on the
surface of Mars. Named the Beagle 2 after Charles Darwin's ship,
the mission will be a part of the ESA's Mars Express mission. The

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION ATMOSPHERE IS TOXIC

NASA has admitted that the atmosphere in the new International
Space Station is unfriendly to human beings. Investigations were
carried out after the crew of the Discovery returned complaining
about nausea, vomiting and headaches. A special task force has
been created to solve the problem before the next shuttle visit
in December.

MISLAUNCHED WIRE PROVIDES USEFUL DATA AFTER ALL

It was thought to be a complete write-off, but it turns out that
the Wide Field Infrared Explorer (WIRE) can actually be used for
scientific purposes. Although the primary instrument on WIRE is
useless, its secondary instrument was used over the last month
to make some valuable observations of a nearby star.

Aldrin Wants Space Travel for All

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - The second man to walk on the moon says he
would like to give ordinary citizens the chance to follow in his footsteps.

Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin says that when space travel is opened up to
private citizens, it should not be an exclusive privilege of the wealthy.

Instead, he would like to see everyone given the chance through a
sweepstakes-like contest. Aldrin has formed a nonprofit company called
ShareSpace Foundation Inc., to research the idea.

``We need to start setting a precedent'' of allowing private citizens to go
into space, he said.

Aldrin made his remarks to reporters Friday before narrating an evening
performance by the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga Performing Arts
Center.

It was 30 years ago this month that Aldrin and Neil Armstrong took mankind's
first steps on the lunar surface. Currently, Aldrin is traveling the globe to
discuss his and others' latest ideas for exploring the universe.

CHANDRA TELESCOPE IN LOWER ORBIT THAN PLANNED

The world's most powerful X-ray telescope isn't quite where NASA wanted it, but
its orbit is still acceptable for astronomical observations. An engine firing
over the weekend raised the high point of the Chandra X-ray Observatory's orbit
to 86,433 miles, about one-third of the way to the moon. That's 559 miles lower
than intended, but still well within the specifications.

Greetings listmembers,

Here are a few sighting reports received recently via the UFO Scotland
website. I thought that I would forward them on to the various lists
FYI.

Oh yes, one more thing! For the record:

The term UFO, at least to the team at UFO Scotland, means an
unidentified object of some kind and NOT an alien spaceship. That is
quite a jump with many unfounded assumptions, if we are to assume that
every unidentified craft or object spotted in our skies, is to be an
extra-terrestrial craft from another world. If that was the case, I fear
that the Human race would be outnumbered by all these frequent visitors
and our skies would be full of these things everywhere. However, this is
obviously not the case. Lets get real and honest folks!

Here's hoping that we can all start to work together sharing our
findings and being civil to eachother, whilst we all go about our
various quests to uncover the truth behind this bizarre phenomena.
Teamwork, consideration and respect for other researchers and their
work, will achieve results through time.

If we can all be seen by the media and various authorities in general,
to be civil and supportive to eachother, perhaps UFOLOGY will be taken a
little more seriously and make a little headway instead of the Status
Quo that has been observed for the last 50 years regarding UFO research,
the way it is portrayed to the public, the real truth and the media's
involvement.

It really concerns me when I read reports from other researchers who
have been studying the ufo phenomena for the past 30,40 or even 50
years. When I see their results and data gained during this research
time, I can see not much more than I have found after just under three
years of serious research into this phenomena.

Are we going to be sitting here in 10, 20 or thirty years from now with
exactly the same feelings and questions?  I sure hope not!  Not one
group or researcher can do this or find all of the hidden answers on
their own. We all need eachother and have to work together as a large
and organised unit, if we want to avoid asking these same questions
again in a few decades time.

Treat others how you would like to be treated yourself, and stop waiting
for the almighty Govts of the world to tell all, cause it won't happen
anytime soon. We have to find the answers ourselves, as a large and
united worldwide research unit and not expect the info to be given to us
on a golden platter as we all so readily do.

Construction and not Destruction folks!

the sky ,it was about the size as venus a bit bigger
and brighter,at first it moved in a straight line as a satelite would.
one of my freinds said it was a satelite,as soon as he said this
the object stopped and circled 3 times, then it zoom off zig zagging at
incredible speeds,it had changed colour by this time to a
crimson colour, then it stopped and changed to its origanal colour of
silvery white, then it became a amber colour and started
to decend slowly, going left then right, like a falling leaf or a bit of
paper,at this time the object became very bright so bright it
looked like a dot of light right in front of your eyes, one of my
freinds became frightend and decided to return to the tent were
we was camping. the object stayed performing impossible manouveres for
more than 2 hours, untill my brother and freind
returned to the tent. i kept watching then the ufo turn colour again to
silvery white , !
and remained stationary like a star ,i watched it for a long time and it
did not move so i joined my freinds back in the tent. the
weather at the time was clear with a few clouds.

my aunts
pool and I got out becuase the water was getting cold
and I decided to sit on the deck of the pool to dry off.
I was just sitting there for about five miniuts and I saw
this red flash of light about two hundred feet away. I
did not here any sound of what a plane would make and
just like a bat out of hell, a red orbed shaped object
appeared out of no where. It was about three hundred feet
off the ground and it just hovered and bobbed around,and
just as fast as it apered it disappeared. As astonished
as I was I was about to run in the house when I saw a jet
go past and past the jet was a bright flash and I saw
someting shoot off like a bullet. So I suppose I saw two
unidentified flying objects.

My_Sighting_Submission : Let me start of by saying that I am quite the
UFO enthusiast and have
been facsinated with anything UFO related since I was a little kid. I
got a call at about
12:05am from my friend jessica, who was over at her boyfriend David's
house with several of my
other friends. They told me that her, and everyone at the house at the
time had been out
watching UFOs for a few minutes now. I was ecstatic and went to go wake
my parents. I got my
dad up and outside to come search the sky. We spotted in the
south-eastern sky a stobing
light. It seemed to be high altitude, although admitadly i'm not too
good at judging altitude.
I've seen planes strobe lights and this was different. This very bright,
and not moving. It
started to strobe at a faster and faster pace until it would flash once
very brightly (Enough
to light up a good bit of the sky), dissapear, and then to my amazement
re-appear in another
part of the sky with another big flash, After the big flash it beg!
an slowing its bright white blinking to the rate it was at before.  At
this point I decided I
had to go get my mom, as my dad didnt want me to wake her up the first
time. When her and I
got back downstairs I walked out of my garage just in time to see it
dissapear with another
white flash and reapear with another white flash. At one point the first
one flashed bright
once, another one showed up, and flew near the first at a high rate of
speed, pulling off a
sharp turn torwards it. The second one was reddish, but still flashed
white sometimes. It was
the most incredible thing I have ever seen. After a good half hour  of
putting on what seemed
to be some kind of show they started moving south in dissapearing,
re-apearing zig zag
patterns, until they got too far to see. I wish i had some kind of video
camera, as I would
love to watch it over and over again. It was amazing, and yet kind of
creepy at the same time.
I have several witnesses, and my friend John says he saw police off!
icers and civilian spectators looking up into the sky in a convienence
store parking lots on
his way home. I have not yet called the Madison Police Department to
confirm this. I did
however call the air traffic control tower at huntsville international
airport and asked them
if they had any sightings or blips and they just told me that air
traffic control doesnt track
anything that they arent expecting. I kindly asked him to ask someone
who was there the night
it happened, but the guy there didnt see anything. I guess they dont
look at the radar screen
unless a planes coming in. Have you guys gotten any sightings like this?
Can you refer me to
some video clips that contain a similar sighting? Do you get many
sightings like this? Mail me
anytime, and I dont care about anonymity. If you wish to speak to any of

media didnt get wind

on or about 090152 i sighted a ufo in greensboro,n.c. i observed a huge
saucer shaped object hovering between two houses. i was 15 years old at
the time and was riding my bike and only caught a glimpse of this object
because my momentum carried me to a point where on of the houses blocked
my vision.i immediately slammed on the brakes to the bike and returned
to the location of my sighting only to view a rapidly dissapearing speck
in the sky. in my best judgement, this all happened in about 10 seconds.
there were no sounds. because i did not want people to think i was
crazy, i told noone about this incident at that time.   richard m.

Although it missed its close photo opportunity with Asteroid
Braille, Deep Space 1 did get the chance to probe the asteroid
with some of its other instruments. The infrared spectrometer on
board the probe returned data that indicates the asteroid could
be a chunk that broke off much larger Vesta.

SOLAR STORMS NEARING PEAK

solar flare on Monday - one of the most powerful events seen

INDONESIAN SATELLITE READY FOR LAUNCH
------------------------
An Indonesian telecommunications satellite - TELKOM 1 - is
ready for liftoff Wednesday at the European Space Agency launch
center in Kourou, French Guiana. It will launch on board an Ariane
42P rocket with two solid strap-on boosters. Arianespace was hoping
to launch 13 rockets this year, but this launch will only be their third.

Firmage Set to Launch Research Institute

Six months after shocking the Internet and business worlds, Joseph Firmage
is about to step back into the limelight. Wednesday, he plans to launch his
new research institute, the International Space Sciences Organization
(ISSO).

Firmage became a controversial figure in January, when he posted a book
called The Truth to his web site, and then resigned as CEO of USWeb/CKS, a
$1.6 billion Internet consulting and services firm.

Firmage has generated so much controversy because of his belief that aliens
have visited the Earth. But he insists his message has been distorted by
the media. "For people who've taken the time to read my book, only about
two pages out of 700 had anything to do with Roswell," Firmage told
space.com in a recent interview. "It was about biology, physics, where we
stand and what's around the corner."

Firmage hopes the announcements he plans to make Wednesday about ISSO will
help skeptics see his vision from a different angle. Rather than focusing
on UFOlogy or other "fringe" subjects, ISSO will spend several million
dollars on research into breakthrough propulsion systems, including
electromagnetic propulsion systems and methods for "manipulating" the speed
of light; energy generation systems, such as fuel cells and "zero point
energy systems"; and what Firmage calls "the physical dynamics of
consciousness," or the idea that physics and human consciousness are based
on a single set of underlying processes.

ISSO will spend several million dollars on internal research projects and
grants to scientists at other organizations, Firmage said, adding that all
the research will be scientifically accurate. "People will be satisfied
with the intellectual rigor of what we do," he said. "The reality is the
press has treated this so trivially. We're really doing some very important
work."

In fact, Firmage said, some people are already becoming more receptive to
his efforts. "I've noticed a very positive swing in receptivity amongst
scientists, government and Silicon Valley. I think people are mature enough
to remember that we've been seriously advancing engineering technologies
for only about 40,000 days now, or 100 years. I'm sure the grand march of
science does not stop at 2000 A.D."

ARIANE LAUNCH DELAYED

An anomaly in the electrical system delayed the launch of an Ariane 42P
rocket carrying an Indonesian Telkom 1 telecommunications satellite.
The electrical system will need to be replaced, so the launch has been

CHANDRA ISN'T QUITE WHERE IT'S EXPECTED

Recent course corrections by the Chandra X-Ray observatory have
placed the space-based telescope a little off its final orbit - but
well within operational parameters. Flight engineers plan to use the
telescope's navigational thrusters to place it in its
working orbit - 140,000 kilometers.

ATLAS ROCKETS COULD BE READY TO FLY AGAIN BY SEPTEMBER
------------------------
After a rash of disastrous launches, the Air Force called for the
grounding of all launches. Now thorough investigations by both the
Air Force and rocket manufacturers have turned up a series of flaws
in the assembly of the engines. The rocket manufacturers are working
quickly to upgrade the malfunctioning components, and hope to have
the rockets ready to fly as early as next month.

Editorial

I don't often editorialize like this, but I'll make an exception. Even
with the restoration of funding for the crucial SIRTF mission on Friday,
the proposed NASA budget cuts are a devastating blow to the US space
science program and to the morale of all of us who work on NASA
programs. The Discovery and Explorer programs are badly hit, US
participation in Solar B and FIRST/Planck would be cut,  and the GLAST
gamma ray telescope might face the axe. NASA's budget in real terms has
been cut repeatedly in recent years. The new cuts to space science are
especially harsh, given the major successful reforms of the NASA space
science program. We've  worked hard over the past decade to bring the US
public great results from our studies of the universe while cutting back
budgets. I frequently give talks to the general public and have been
aware of a growing enthusiasm for, interest in, and support for space
science over the past few years. I hope the US public will become aware
of the proposed cuts and persuade Congress to relent further.

STS-93/Chandra
---------------

Chandra continues to operate well in transfer orbit. Both the ACIS and
HRC cameras have survived launch and will be checked out over the next
few weeks. The IPS-3 burn to raise apogee to 140000 km  was carried out
at 2232 UTC on Jul 31. DSN tracking indicates the orbit is now 3482 x
139384 km x 28.5 deg. A further IPS-4 burn on Aug 4 raised perigee to
around 5700 km, and another perigee raise burn is planned for Aug 7.

The Integral Propulsion System on Chandra uses four TR-308 bipropellant
thrusters for orbit changes. The thrusters use N2O4 (nitrogen tetroxide)
oxidizer and N2H4 (hydrazine) fuel. They have a thrust of 472N and a
specific impulse of 322.3s; the TR-308 is an upgrade of the TR-306 that
was used on three Lockheed Martin Series 5000 satellites. The same fuel
tanks also feed Marquardt 89N monopropellant hydrazine RCS thrusters. In
addition to the IPS, the MUPS (Momentum Unloading Propulsion System)
uses 0.9N hydrazine thrusters to unload momentum from the gyro systems
used to point Chandra. (Thanks to the TRW propulsion experts for the
info). Thrusters LAE-1 and LAE-3 were used for the first three burns;
LAE-2 and LAE-4 were used for IPS-4 and will be used for the remaining
burns.

Columbia landed at 0320 UTC on Jul 28 on runway 33 at KSC. Post flight
inspection confirms the presence of holes in the  cooling lines on the
nozzle of SSME 2019 (engine 3) which caused a hydrogen leak. A loose
repair pin in the engine broke free and may have caused the  failure.
Although the leak was small, this combined with the electrical short
makes two semi-serious failures in the main propulsion system during
ascent, and I can't remember a launch since 51-L when we've had that.
Fortunately the two failures didn't add together, but it seems like we
lost enough redundancy to make me nervous.

Recent Launches
---------------

Deep Space 1 made a flyby of minor planet (9969) Braille at 0446 UTC on
Jul 29. Flyby distance was less than 25 km and possibly as little as 15
km. DS 1 failed to point its camera to image the target at closest
approach, but the navigation system was successful in bringing the
vehicle close to the asteroid, and longer range IR imaging was
successful. The NSTAR ion engine continues to operate well.

Lunar Prospector impacted the lunar surface at 0952 UTC on 1999 Jul 31.
Impact site was 42.1E, 87.7S near the lunar south pole. The orbit was
raised to a 230 km apogee before the deorbit burn over the lunar farside
at 0919 UTC.

over Europe on August 11, radio transmissions from near the path of
totality may spread across the globe, due to ionospheric changes
caused by the Moon's shadow. As a result, ham radio operators around
the world can track the August 11, 1999 total solar eclipse by
monitoring changes in atmospheric radio propagation. Science@NASA

Pioneer 10 was launched on 2 March 1972 (!) on a trajectory which
encountered Jupiter on 5 December 1973. Because of its intententional
close approach to Jupiter, Pioneer 10 was accelerated to a speed in
excess of solar escape velocity.

    Distant Pioneer Needs New Home

    Wayout - August 4, 1999 - The first interstellar explorer Pioneer 10,
    is alive and well as it's plutonium battery continues to feed a
    trickle of energy from its decaying core. On July 10 Pioneer 10 was
    commanded to make a precession maneuver that will keep it's antenna
    aligned towards Earth until at least September, when it will start to
    drift aimlessly unless funding is found.

    With the Lunar Prospector operations team winding down, the
    opportunity to continue some basic station keeping of Pioneer 10 will
    soon lapse. Since 1997, the Lunar Prospector mission team has used
    Pioneer 10 as a training operation, enabling ongoing precession
    maneuvers to keep the spacecraft aligned for NASA's Deep Space
    Network.

    However, if control is lost, Pioneer 10 will drift into eternity
    carrying only its etched gold card that may one day point someone to
    Sol. The spacecraft as of August 1, was 73.16 AUs relative to the Sun
    or some 11 billion kilometers from Earth while moving at 12.24 km/sec
    or 27,380 mph. The current round trip light time is now over 20 hours
    25 minutes.

    While Pioneer 10's antenna continues to point towards Earth and the
    telemetry quality remains okay it will be possible to operate Pioneer
    10 into September. Tracking is on the 70 meter antennas only. The
    signal level is between -177 to -179 dbm, with SNR from 0.8 to 1.5 dB.

    The other issue is of course the RTG pack, which currently has a bus
    voltage of around 27.5 volts (nominal value = 28 volts). But this
    power is still sufficient for limited science with Pioneer 10
    returning data a few hours each week from the low-power
    Geiger-Tube-Telescope and the Charged Particle Instrument.

    Continuing GTT data from Pioneer 10 during the first part of 1999 has
    been of of special importance in determining whether or not Pioneer 10
    is still interior to the heliopause.

    Neutron monitors on Earth at Climax and Goose Bay recorded a marked
    and rapid decrease in cosmic ray intensity of about 4 % during April
    and early May of 1998. If Pioneer 10 is still inside the heliopause,
    we can expect a decrease in cosmic-ray intensity at Pioneer 10 to
    occur during 1999.

    The approximate 9 month delay from Earth to Pioneer 10 corresponds to
    the distance of ~72 AU covered by the solar wind assuming a speed of
    450 km/s. If Pioneer 10 has passed outside the heliopause into
    interstellar space, then the decrease in cosmic intensity will not be
    observed at Pioneer 10.

    Pioneer 10 will continue into interstellar space, heading generally
    for the red star Aldebaran, which forms the eye of Taurus (The Bull).
    Aldebaran is about 68 light years away and it will take Pioneer over 2
    million years to reach it.
