The last time I had a crush on somebody, I was
still in college. Even then I thought I was too
old to be having one. ‘Crushing,’ as the term is
being used now, should’ve been left behind in high
school – stashed inside a wooden chest at the foot
of your bed along with slum books, pin-ups of
forgone teenage idols, and friendship bracelets.
Reading old diaries will indeed make you laugh at
how juvenile you were to write the names of the
kids you and your crush would have. It is a
feeling of adoration in its purest and most
earnest form.

To say that having crushes is only for kids is
like saying that only fifteen-year-olds are
capable of such a feeling: all furry and giddy and
warm inside. Adults are entitled to feel that too,
even without digging deep for the inner child.

Remember Richard from the second-floor sales
department? Didn’t you think he had a cute (though
quite stubby) nose? Didn’t you walk by his cubicle
on purpose to display your new mini skirt? Doesn’t
your heart skip a beat, as many songs go, every
time he nods at you when you run into each other
at the stairs? But he’s married and you have a
boyfriend, and you know you don’t really want to
destroy his relationship or yours. So, yeah, you
have a crush on Richard.

I wouldn’t call it childish. It’s pretty cute
actually. To be attracted to somebody without the
sexual strings attached, to like somebody just
because – how many people nowadays give without
asking for something in return? In a way crushing
on somebody is an outlet. It gives us the chance
to channel some of the good feelings we have in
excess. Nothing will probably come out of it –
because Richard has two kids, there a close-to-nil
chance of hooking up – but still, you let him have
that last mint in the candy jar. You give him a
copy of music he casually mentioned he liked. And
you still pass by his office even if he doesn’t
notice your short, short skirt because he’s on the
phone with his wife.
