ADVERTISING AND WEBLOGS
*****************************************************************
Lots of opinions have been raised on this subject over the past week
over at UKB Discuss. Is there a place for advertising in weblogs and, if
so, how can it be done without compromising the weblog itself.
Drew of http://dreamweaverfever.com/ doesn't think that there is a place
for advertising in weblogs, but is happy for bloggers to write about
commercial products and services that they think are of note. Following
on from that, Tom of http://plasticbag.org/ wondered, if a weblog author
includes advertising on their site, whether they would be accountable
for the content of the advertising. Drew suggested that traditional
media already exercises control over their advertising content.
Turning attention to advertising on television, Bobbie of
http://bobzilla.co.uk/ and Tom of
http://www.sparklefluff.com/blatantoptimism/ brought how advertising
(or, more specifically, endorsement and product-placement) had affected
a selection of programmes. As the line between content and advertising
becomes more blurred in traditional media, should webloggers including
advertising in their output make the effort to differentiate clearly
between the two? Tom of http://bbcity.co.uk/, who began the discussion,
thinks this is critical.
The conversation also turned to the more general topic of how weblogs
can generate revenue for their authors. With a couple of new and
deliberate exceptions, most weblogs currently don't do this to any
apparent level, yet arguably there are financial benefits to weblogging
- even if it boils down to the enhancement of personal skills leading to
a potentially higher salary.
I've only skipped over the fundamentals here, but you can find the whole
conversation on UKB Discuss. The subject line was "advertising".
*****************************************************************
MANAGING PERSONAL PRIVACY IN WEBLOGGING
*****************************************************************
Another hot topic from UKB Discuss. Personal privacy is high on
everyone's list of priorities. The conversation began when James of
http://chachacha.co.uk/ wondered how much personal information a
hypothetical stalker could learn about any particular weblogger from
their web presence.
As Bobbie of http://bobzilla.co.uk/ highlighted, a dedicated stalker
would have no trouble finding out personal information whether it be on
the web or not. The conversation then extended beyond personal data, to
look at what details about their personal lives webloggers are prepared
to divulge. Nick of http://nickjordan.co.uk/ told us that he's elected
not to write specifically about his work any more, after he became aware
that his superiors were aware of the site. Other people, myself
included, have decided (or learned) that topics concerning other people
(family/friends/colleagues etc.) are well and truly off-limits.
Gordon from http://snowgoon.co.uk/ summarised things nicely: "whenever
you post you should be aware that what you are saying makes it into the
public domain".
*****************************************************************
UK WEBLOGS AGGREGATOR
*****************************************************************
Following conversations on UKB Social, Cal of http://iamcal.com/ has
built an RSS feed aggregator for UK weblogs, and it's here:
http://aggregator.weblogs.co.uk/.
This goes out and grabs RSS feeds from UK weblogs that have them, and
then arranges the posts starting with the most recent. Can't be arsed to
look at all 600 sites today? This is the page for you - and it's also
available in RSS.
*****************************************************************
GET YOUR WEBLOG LISTED
*****************************************************************
With the development of the new Aggregator, the need for a comprehensive
list of UK weblogs arose again. Since GBlogs closed in October, nobody
has been maintaining such a list, and lots of weblogs have come and gone
since then. Until now...
Mo Morgan (that's me) has taken on the task of maintaining the list of
UK weblogs, and making this list available to the various applications
out there. So, the aforementioned Aggregator at
http://aggregator.weblogs.co.uk/, the update monitor at
http://timemachinego.com/ukblogs/, and the search engine at
http://gbloogle.benhammersley.com/ now all use the same list of sites
for reference.
If you have a new site you want listed, or the details about your site
have changed, go to http://weblogs.co.uk/ and fill in the form.
Alternatively, send Mo (me again) and email.
