Dear Users,
UnCoverIt Beta 10 is out. Here is what's new:
- added three templates for Avery labels
- fixed bug where text areas where not displayed correctly after opening saved
covers
Grab the new version from here:
<http://www.iwascoding.com/uc/UnCoverIt_2.1b10.dmg>
If you have been using UnCoverIt 2.1 Beta 9, please note that it will expire in
a few days.
Best Regards,
Ilja
Ryan,
in order for this to work, UnCoverIt would need support for
AppleScript. Although it's on the to-do list for quite some time now,
it's still not there.
Sorry,
Ilja

I am a professional DJ and have my 9000+ songs in a Filemaker Pro database. I
can sort
them and export them in any fashion I want. What I would LOVE to see, is a
feature that
let you batch generate covers based upon a tab delimitered file or other
database format.
With the ability to tell uncover it to use that information.
I don't know if this is even possible. Currently I have to use a program such
as
PageeMaker (where they were originally created) to make such a print for my
vinyl sleeves I
put my CDs in.
I am wanting to create a template for the Jewel Sleeves I currently use

Any ideas if this would work?

Dear Users,
I just released UnCoverIt 2.1 Beta 7. You can grab it from this URL:
<http://www.iwascoding.com/uc/UnCoverIt_2.1b7.dmg>
If fixes two crashing bugs. One was related to downloading album art
for audio covers
from the internet. The other one could crash UnCoverIt after you
closed any of the panels
that let you modify area properties. The behaviour of the text panel
is also improved as
suggested on this list a few days ago.
If you are using any of the earlier beta release you should
definitely update to the new
release.
Detailed list of what's new:
- fixed poor image quality on printouts
- image view in image area panel can receive dragged files again
- fixed crashing bug related to album artwork downloaded from the
internet
- fixed long-standing bug that could cause crashes when user closed
certain panels
- text area mode automatically changes when text is entered into
custom text box or
macro is selected
Have fun with the new version,
Ilja
Bill,
could you send me a screenshot of the cover and your playlist off-list
at iwas@... ?

I have had exactly the same problem making a track listing from my

That's odd. When creating covers from your CD Database the tracks
should be ordered always as they are on the CD. Can you send me a
screenshot showing the iTunes display and the UnCoverIt cover ? Please
send it off-list directly to iwas@..., since yahoo will strip

I changed that for beta 6 released today. I hardly could see a
difference.

Right now, there is no way. I have plans to turn the whole audio area
into an editable text object, where the user can freely edit the
generate track listing. But don't count on that feature all too soon.

This will be fixed in beta 7. I fixed some pretty serious bugs today,
so expect it tomorrow or the day after that.

Being in Germany, I never heard of Chubby Templates. What's that?

Right now there is a short section in the online help, under
"Customizing UnCoverIt". I just had a look on it and found it
definitely much too short. I got to rework some parts of the online
help for the final 2.1 release anyway.
Regards,
Ilja
Just wanted to send in some notes / suggestions I jotted down:
* I mainly use the following procedure to make my disc labels:
1) insert CD into iTunes
2) Add / Edit disc and track names as necessary
3) Launch UnCoverIt
4) Choose the "Audio CDs" import (on the left side of main window)
5) Modify rest of label as necessary
When I choose Step 4, the Track Names are sorted wrong! Instead of,
as an example, by Track Name (which has the Track Nbr preattached),'
it's sorted by something like Entered / Changed Date, which results
in any changed lines (from Step 2) being placed at the end of the
Track listing instead of in their proper place!
* The Spacing between Tracks on the label seem to be determined by the
following formula: Integer(Line Count of Page / Nbr of Tracks)
when a better formula for equal spacing would be: Integer(Line Count
of Page / [Nbr of Tracks + 1] )
* Is there any way to "wrap" the lines of text instead of shrinking
their Font Size? Especially when a Disc may have 2 or 3 songs total,
but because of the name, it's shrunk down to the smallest size.
* When using the Text Area Panel, if data is entered / edited in the
"Custom Text" area, can the radio button for "Custom Text" be auto-
matically selected?
* Can we get more templates? The ones I'm especially wanting have to
do with CD Case Size: for "Chubby" doubles, triples, quadruples, and
sextuples (sp?); also, ultra slimline singles, double, triples, and
quadruples.
* Lastly, as much as it's asked, it might be good to create a Tutorial
for creating an example of a Template.
Thanks for considering these suggestions!!

Irwin,
if you plan to use those cd stomper regularly, you should create a
template for it. To do so:
1. Start UnCoverIt
2. Check the "use no source" check box in the lower left of the 'New
Cover Panel'
3. Double-Click the CD-Label template
4. In the upcoming cover window choose "Select All" from the "Edit menu"
5. Use the cursor keys on your keyboard to move all cover elements to
the right location
6. Choose "Save a copy to templates folder" from the file menu and save
your template under a descriptive name.
7. Restart UncoverIt and select "user defined templates" from the
template popup.
Hope this helps,
Ilja

Dear UnCoverIt users,
UnCoverIt 2.1 Beta 5 is out. It automatically downloads album artwork from the
internet
for audio and mp3 covers and adds a template for CD-Labels.
Complete list of what's new:
- automically downloads album artwork for audio and mp3 cover from the internet
if no
album artwork is available
- added CD-Label templates
- fixed bugs related to the 'Automically decrease font size' option for text
fields
- tweaked item names in 'Tools' menu

Right now there is a opacity setting for image. You have to
double-click the image to get to the slider.

You can select a line style (standard, dashed or cut-marks) in the
inspector a choose one for all items in the 'New Cover' panels style
section.

Dear UnCoverIt Users,
UnCoverIt 2.1 Beta 4 is out. The big new feature is browsing your iTunes library
by cover
art. In the 'New Cover Panel' change to the 'iTunes' tab and hit 'Browse'. I
also got the
alignment and grid menu commands to work and there is a new menu command for
showing frames for objects without border.
Detailed list of what's new:
2.1 Beta 4 (v20) (2004-08-22)
- added cover artwork browsing to iTunes import panel
- added 'Browse iTunes' button to 'New Cover Panel'
- added CD-ROM inlet template for audio covers with background art
- enabled grid and alignment menu commands
- added menu command for showing invisible object frames
- improved multi-column drawing for audio areas
Get the new version from <http://www.iwascoding.com/uc/UnCoverIt_2.1b4.dmg.bin>.
Thanks for all the patient testing of the previous beta versions,
Ilja
Ilja,
New version works great! I especially like the easier way to change fonts! It's
a real
convenience.
One thing I would like to see changed when arranging CD tracks in 2 or more
colums is
the spacing. The times for the first column of tracks get too closely spaced to
the track
numbers of the next column of tracks and makes it a bit confusing to read. (As a
former
graphic designer, I would also like a way to adjust the "leading," the spacing
between the
lines, in the track listing as well as in the title of the CD. If the name of
the CD goes to two
lines there is just too much space between the lines...)
Also, is there any way to permanently leave "spread tracks verticlly" unchecked?
It's a pain
to always have to make that adjustment.
Thanks for a great program and the improvements!
Paul
Dear UnCoverIt users,
I know that you shouldn't start adding new features, when your are claiming that
your
application has already reached beta stage, but I just couldn't sit still. I
hope you will
forgive me...
So here is UnCoverIt 2.1 Beta 3, which has tries to import album art directly
from your
iTunes tracks, when you are choosing tracks from your iTunes library as source
for your
Audio or MP3 cover. There is also a new 'Font' popup in the toolbar, which
changes the
font for the whole cover. If you don't see, you may have to customize your
toolbar using
the 'View' menu.
Here is a complete list of what's new for beta 3:
- when using an iTunes album as cover source, album artwork is automatically
used as
background image, if existant
- added 'Font' popup to toolbar to switch fonts for the whole cover at once
- new BPM (beats per minute) field for Audio Areas
- can read meta information from AAC (.m4a and m4p) files directly
- opacity slider for image objects
- background images are labeled as such in graphics table in cover window
sidebar
Download beta 3 from <http://www.iwascoding.com/uc/UnCoverIt_2.1b3.dmg.bin> .
Best Regards,
Ilja
P.S. Thanks for every bug report and suggestion sent in!
Ilja,
I get this message after downloading it:

This happened with the previous beta too, but I was able to open and
install it. Not with this version though.

I see your problem. Maybe a check box 'Only import source data' into first area
would
help?

Select a data or an audio area. Bring up the Inspector and look at the area
shape popup at
the button. Not very intuitive. I'm open for suggestions.

Do you know where iTunes stores the cover art? Are they stored in the MP3 files
ID3 tag ?
Thanks for trying out the beta version!
You know how much we love uncoverit so you know that it is great and
these are 'wishlist' items:
A place to share templates... I have modified some of the templates
because the DVD template was too small (I use the DVD boxes that AOL
was using a while back ;-) and would like to let others use it if they
need it.
A way to print out two CD lables at the same time. As is (I made
another template) I copied the CD cover and pasted it onto the same
page an made two CD covers one one page but importing CD infromation
puts it in both lables and I have to then erase the second CD info and
import the info from the 'edit tracks' window. Although it is probably
easier for me to do this than it is to make UnCoverit do this.
I haven't been able to get the CD shape to work... please enlighten
the dummies of the world!
I like the way that iTunes uses the album art in the lables (but other
than that, it sux!) and can do 'mosaic's'
Thanks for listening and thanks for such a great program... You rock!!

I have always labeled my archive disks with a pen, because it was so much
easier than using a program. UnCoverIt seems easy enough to change that
habit. Wow.
Thanks!
I have a few suggestions for the wishlist, based on initial fiddling with
version 2.0.3 v16. Some of these are bugs and gripes, but please don't
get the impression that I don't like the program! It's quite usable now,
and I'd just like to see it get even better. Here's the list:
I'd like to be able to look at the preview with settable magnification. On
my screen it's about 2/3 lifesize, which can be too small. This one's
probably the most important to me.
Import image with transparency ... to use a normal image as a faded-out
background behind the generated text. This could just be another setting on
the Inspector. Might as well allow transparency on every object, for that
matter.
In a volume of folders of images, optionally choose one image from inside each
folder as an icon of that folder. Auto-choose but let the user override the
choice.
Hide the palettes (toolbar, inspector, color) if there's no document window
open.
Hide the Inspector when UnCoverIt loses focus, as the toolkit does with the
standard palettes, for consistency.
Don't print the rectangular outline of the cover. It's impossible to cut the
paper exactly on the line. Display the rectangle, but when printing put
alignment tick marks *outside* the area to be cut out. This could probably
be approximated with a custom template; I haven't tried that yet.
Changing a text field from, say, "Connected with" to "Custom Text" makes it
forget the font choices. Seems like it shouldn't.
Format->Align and Size->xxx don't seem to do anything, except for "Make
Natural Size". They get enabled when there are multiple objects, but no
change is visible when they are chosen.
It took me a while to find the Format->Text->Center menu item. Perhaps
these settings should appear on the Inspector or Font palette, or there could
be a Text palette.
The help file doesn't say anything about most of the menu items. I was
searching for how to center text and had almost concluded that there wasn't
any way to do it.
In the help file, all the topics seem to be named "Topic name". At least,
that's how they show up in search results (Help Viewer 2.0.6 (v111.3)).
Tools->Show Tools isn't a toggle, as such things usually are.
Tools->Selection Tool isn't like the rest of the things in the Tools menu.
It's not clear why it even exists. Also, it doesn't have a verb in its name.
Tools->Inspector... should be "Show Inspector" and shouldn't have an
ellipsis (...), because the thing it brings up is more of a palette than a
dialog.
The range of grid spacings is from absurdly small to medium sized. Larger
minimum and maximum sizes would probably be more useful.
With the grid spacing set to one of the smallest settings, and Show Grid on,
dragging around an object sometimes leaves stray vertical line segments
visible on the canvas.
If a very large image is used (which might make partial sense if the DPI
setting in the file is very high) UnCoverIt is very slow to drag it around.
Probably it ought to scale down the image to screen size and drag that,
instead of going back to the full image for every redraw.
I'd like the reveal triangles and the folder icons to be (separately)
optional. Even better, make them replaceable with custom elements.
"Volume Name" and other similar strings should change to "Folder Name"
when a folder has been selected rather than a volume.
This one might be hard ... when browsing for image files, I'd like to see
previews of the images.
Wow, that's a longer list than I planned on. Again, sorry to include so
many gripes.

I tried the 2.1a6 and it worked like a charm. Thanks. I have the party
shuffle pseudo-playlist turned on. I also have a wishlist playlist of
ITMS samples. Could those have any effect on UnCoverIt 2.0.3?

I upgraded to 4.6 to see if that fixed my problems with UnCoverIt
2.0.3 but still had the same problems. The 2.1alpha6 worked just fine
with 4.6.
Matt
I upgraded to iTunes 4.6 and it appears that UnCoverIt is working
fine so far. I haven't yet
printed any of these new covers that I created but don't expect any
problems with that
since I never have had any printing problems before.
I mostly use UnCoverIt to create CD covers created from iTunes
playlists.
