Re: Web site link and Common Adventure Resource Networking   Message List

Thanks For your prompt response Toby. I appreciate the entry of the new link to
the
Outdoor Program web site.

The way I found your web site was by doing a Google search for the term "Common
Adventure." I was involved in defining the use of this term and a philosophy
for the
organization of outdoor recreation and environmental projects in the late
1960's. It has
been adopted by many Colleges, Communities, Outdoor Clubs and is now even being
used for the set up of computer game scenarios. I am developing some current
web site
content about the historic and current use of this amazing concept and the
philosophy
behind it. Below is an introductory Blog site I have started to explain this
effort.
http://homepage.mac.com/gogrimm.mac/iblog/index.html

I have also been involved in the development of community and natural resource
multimedia programs over many years and more recently, since 1995, have
developed
many Interactive multimedia and new media CD-ROMs and web sites. One of the
most
significant projects I have been involved in has taken place in the last 4
years. This started
with the Upper Sevier River Community Watershed project and has expanded to 4
other
Interactive Watersheds across the country.

The model for all of this work was developed with the help of people in the
Upper Sevier
River, the Dixie National Forest, and many other federal, state, and local
partners. Possibly
this web site contains more attractive and interactive multimedia and
visualization material
than any other web site available for local watershed and natural resource
topics. We
receive many very positive comments about the layout and design and the access
to a wide
variety of content topics. However, it appears that not many people who live
near the
Upper Sevier watershed are aware of or use the site for information or for
citizen
involvement, yet.

I would like to have a conversation with the primary coordinators of the SUU
outdoor
program, and perhaps other educators at SUU, about how the watershed web site
project
could be used by students, faculty, townspeople, and others in the area of the
Upper
Sevier River for educational, experiential and community learning and
interactive projects.
I believe this has the potential to provide extraordinary value to everyone in
the larger
watershed and ecosystem community in the near and distant future.

One section of the Interactive Watersheds web sites, the On-Line Watershed
Community
Center, was created to function like a Common Adventure Outdoor Program. This
was
intended, over time, to develop into a very good Networking Resource Center for
all
things related to the Watershed. The outline has been developed and we expect
it to
grow in value in the future as more people use it. Potentially this resource,
the SUU
Outdoor Program and many other individuals and organizations others would
contribute
to future networking concepts using the Internet.

Can you provide me with some contacts at SUU to start this conversation? For
reference, I
will provide a few web site links below that will help you and others get a
better
understanding of the possibilities I can imagine.

First, there is a detailed "Interactive Preview of the Major Features" of the
Upper Sevier
River Community Project web site. This is broken into 8 sections that guide you
through
how all of the different parts of the web site work. This includes a brief
preview of the
Watershed Community Center. Each section may take between 5 and 15 minutes to
complete and the whole preview can be completed in less than an hour. This
preview is
the same presentation we gave at the 2003 National Joint Ventures Conference-
Partners
in Stewardship last fall. Note, that the amount of interactive multimedia and
textual
content on this site is extensive and would take more than a day to complete
without the
preview.

Second, I will provide a paper I recently presented at the PlaNetwork 2004
Conference in
San Francisco. Titled, "InterActive InterNetworking for Ecological Commons,"
this
describes how Interactive multimedia, on-line Community Networking web sites,
watershed groups, and the Common Adventure philosophy can enhance public
understanding and involvement in local natural resource issues. The first link
below is to
the PlaNetwork web site article. I will also provide a link to the Common
Adventure Blog
page where the material is duplicated

Our own Mountain Visions web site also has some interesting related links to
projects we
have done, including others with Utah State University in Provo. I will list a
few of those
links you and others might want to look at below.

Mountain Visions, contains a "Multimedia Portfolio, Interactive Virtual Tours,
Galleries,
Collaboration and What We Do." Also included is a "What's New" page that
chronicles
projects that are recent or ongoing.

produced across the U.S. This includes the Upper Sevier Watershed in Utah:

I should note that we have also provided an "Interactive Watersheds On-line Web
Site
Production Workshop" to help people get a good start on the many production
elements
provided on these web sites. This is found on the Educational Activities
section of the
Community Center section of the Upper Sevier River web site. I will provide
links to both
This is a preliminary workshop that we presented to people On-Site at several
watershed
locations including in Cedar City. It needs to be updated to include current
material and
we will do this when we have time and funding available. The topics cover
"Basic
Photography, Digital Image Processing, Basic Digital Video, 360 Degree
Panoramas, Basic
Web Site, Advanced Web Site, and Community Demonstration.

In the Multimedia Portfolio, Education and Information section is a project we
developed
with Utah State University and BLM. Titled "A Virtual Exploration of GIS." this
is an on-line
workshop providing information on the basic uses of GIS for management
decisions. This
project was awarded "First Place for Multimedia" at the ESRI International
Conference in
2000.

Another new media project aimed at prospective new students was developed with
The
College of Natural Resources at USU was called "An Interactive Journey."

Please share the above links with others you think might be interested at SUU or
in the
Cedar City Community.

Thanks again for your help with the link to the Upper Sevier River Interactive
Watersheds
web site.
