We're a neighborhood group trying to save the Mount Sutro Forest in San
Francisco.

In the heart of the city, blanketing a steep hill, is San Francisco's very own
temperate cloud forest: Mount Sutro Forest. It's the single largest urban forest
in San Francisco. It is a beautiful 100-year-old stand of mainly eucalyptus,
covering Mount Sutro. Much of it is owned by UCSF.
UCSF now proposes to fell significant areas as "fire management" program. In
fact, this area, according to Cal Fire, has only moderate risk – the lowest
category of three. There is no lower category.
The planned actions may INCREASE the fire danger, as well as having other
adverse effects. This being a cloud forest that gets 30% of its annual moisture
from fog precipitation, it is important to have the dense undergrowth to act as
a sponge. The forest is wet year-round owing to summer fog in San Francisco.
"The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco" - attributed to
Mark Twain.
