Hi All,

I saw that a competing app has been released in the pas couple of days:
http://www.happyapps.com/webnotehappy/

I find the extend of features of this app rather limited but there
are a few things I likes and are worth considering for future version
maybe ??

- the app supports smart folders. I find that rather convenient...
They don't seem to have spotlight support, but I would like that in
URLMP (I mean within the app - I understand version 3.5b allows
bookmarks to be picked-up by Spotlight already). Especially the way
it is implemented in Mail where you can restrict your search and then
save it as a smart folder....

- they use the new Tiger Unified toolbar look :-) (some people don't
like it though)

- multiple pane view.

Any comment??? (any news of a future version??? ;-)) )

Just collapse (close) some folders while viewing all this data.

I have about 2000 URLs in a hierarchy that is mostly two levels and three in a
few places.
When I Expand All and scroll to the bottom, the list fails to be shown in its
entirety, the file
(not the application) freezes, I have to close the file, and reopen it. If I
Collapse All before I
scroll to the bottom, the file remains usable.

Dear List,

Available for testing is URL Manager Pro 3.5b2.

New:

   - Spotlight support (Tiger)
   - Support for DEVONagent (web browser)
   - Add Bookmark CMI plug-in (update)

Spotlight support means that you can now search for your bookmarks
using Spotlight in Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4).

Click the Spotlight icon in the Finder and type your search. When
the search text is found in an URL Manager Pro bookmark file,
it is listed. Clicking the entry opens the bookmark file and
selects the bookmark within it.

Also, when you choose Get Info on a bookmark file you can see
two meta keys that URL Manager Pro adds: a bookmark and folder
count.

NOTE: this is important. Your bookmark file won't be indexed
until you make a change and save the file.

The Spotlight importer is included in the URL Manager Pro package
itself. Please put URL Manager Pro in the /Applications folder
and launch it. The Mac OS X system will then take notice of
the Spotlight importer.

Also included is an update of the Add Bookmark contextual menu
item (CMI). That should be put in:

~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/

You can now control-click on an URL in Apple Mail and DEVONagent.

Please download URL Manager Pro 3.5b2:

<ftp://ftp.url-manager.com/pub/osx/URLManagerPro.dmg>

Please send me your feedback.

PS: later this week I'll update the Add Bookmark plug-in
web page and probably make a special Spotlight web page
with screen shots.

Hi Eric,

>There seems to be a problem with URLM SPONTANEOUSLY SORTING bookmarks.

There is actually a preference that controls this behavior

See Preferences->Look and Feel->Automatically Sort Folders.

It works together with the Sort attribute of a folder. To see this
attribute. Select the folder and control-click on it or use
the Action menu of the toolbar.

The User Manual says:

The Sort submenu sorts the current selection of bookmarks or the
currently selected folders. URL ManagerPro will put folders at the
top and bookmarks below folders. There are four sorting criteria
under the Sort submenu.

Sorting options include:
* Name
* Date
* URL
* Label
* No Order

You can remove sorting order by selecting the No Order menu item. If
no bookmarks or folders are selected, all top-level items are sorted.
If a folder is selected, only its contents will be sorted. If two or
more bookmarks are selected, only those items are sorted.

Tip: You can set the sort attribute of a folder by Control-clicking
that folder and using the Contextual Menu.

Tip: If you enable the preference Automatically Sort Folders, the
contents of a folder will always be sorted when its folder sort
attribute is set. That means that if you add a bookmark via Add
Bookmark from the Shared Menus or Bookmark Menu Extra, the added
bookmark is immediately sorted.

I hope the software still works this way and does it right. It seems
complicated
at first, but I'm sure it feels logical once you realize what's going on.

This is the plan for the next big update: adding keywords.

Working towards that goal, I have been busy with the Spotlight
importer for URL Manager Pro.

That is more or less finished and I will release it to the list
Monday, I hope.

The Spotlight importer will run native on PowerPC and Intel Macs.

The possibility to add keywords to bookmarks will come a little
bit later in the year.

There seems to be a problem with URLM SPONTANEOUSLY SORTING bookmarks.

As far as I know, I have never intentionally requested a sort -- and
I never would as I have about 75 folders in my primary bookmark file
and hundreds of actual bookmarks.

I manually order bookmarks so that like ones are grouped together and
closer to the top of the list or top of a folder and less interesting
ones are farther down the list. Opening my bookmark file to discover
that all my care work of organizing has been DESTROYED by URLM is
very distressing.

The product doesn't seem to be getting many updates lately, but if
you're still working on it Alco: I'd love to see a way in
Preferences to DISABLE sorting. That is, if you wanted to sort,
you'd have to go into Preferences and explicitly enable it. Maybe
even have the option for it to act only temporarily (that is, after a
quit and restart of URLM, we would find the option to sort DISABLED
again.

OR, have it possible to have (multiple?) sorting states saved. My
"user sorted state" would be preserved, so that when if I switched to
By Name then back to "Custom" my previous ordering would return.

WISHLIST ITEM!

As a method of organizing, putting things "in" other things is pretty
limited. It is also a carry-over from the physical world where there
can be only one of each "thing" and each thing can be "in" only a
single container at a time.

I'm speaking of course of the "Bookmarks go in Folders" metaphor that
URLM uses. The problem is, of course, that bookmarked items can
easily "belong in" (or be associated with) more than one category.
Unless you duplicate them and move the duplicates to as many folders
as you need. This is totally impractical however and would result in
a nasty mess. The individual files are each then their own separate
entity. Updating or deleting one won't update the others, etc. It's
the wrong approach.

A link to a javascripting page might be "filed" as "Programming" or
"Scripting" or maybe "Web Design." Pages about inkjet supplies might
fit under Computer Supplies, Printing or Photography. Job
opportunities might be categorized by Job Title, Company Offering,
Location, My Personal Interest Level. Etcetera.

Currently in URLM there is no way apply such terms to bookmarks then
later arbitrarily retrieve them based on which tags ("keywords") they
have.

Consider the concept of Smart Folders. Although these may look the
same way "real" folders do, their contents is actually a filtered
view of a collection of data. Available filters would be any of the
applied "tags," as well as information contained IN the bookmarks, as
well as metadata ABOUT the bookmark.

Filtering by metadata like "last viewed date" or "link status" would
help greatly in culling out of date or dead links. Filtering by
content part (a word in the title, everything in domain ".edu," etc.)
will also be very useful.

Alco, I was using the feature you recently revealed, I control-clicked
on a normal bookmark in a URLPro window. I chose "open with" and chose
Camino (which I had recently installed) and got the error
message("helper app cannot be found").

I used Camino all day yesterday (very nice browser, but the Scrapbook
feature of Firefox still puts it at the top of my list) and today I
tried again and the bookmark opened in Camino (Camino was running).
Then I tried it on Firefox (then not running) and I got the error
message again), and on Explorer(not running) which was launched and
opened the bookmark. There's an inconsistency here I can't figure out.

When I have more time later I'll try this: Open every browser to make
sure they work properly.
Then with them all closed, I'll try the control-click on each one at a
time. Those with the error message I'll retry with that browser
already open. Then I'll repeat the sequence with all browsers closed
and see if that "taught" URLManagerPro what it needs.

It is supported exactly like you say.

Control-Click on a bookmark in URL Manager Pro's window and
select Open With from the contextual menu.

You can also use the Action toolbar button to do the same.

Unfortunately, indeed it is not possible while choosing a
bookmark from the Bookmark Menu Extra or Shared Menu.

In that case, it opens in the default browser setting or
in the preferred browser attribute of the bookmark, like
Randall pointed out.

You can set the preferences for a bookmark so that it will open with
a given browser no matter which one is open, but there is not an
option to choose the browser to open the bookmark with.

Last email I received was Jan 2, 06. Just because I decided to post this did I
discover the
old email list is no more. I wonder how many memebers were lost along the way.

For years, URL Manager Pro has been my single favorite program. I've
recently thought of a feature I'd like to see. This is prompted by my
habit of the past year or so, of having 2 or 3 different browsers open
at the same time.

Have an option, when clicking on a bookmark, for URLPro to show me a
choice of browsers to open the bookmark. Instead of having it fixed in
Internet Preferences to always use a certain browser, have the option
of being offered a choice when I click (perhaps with a contextual
menu).

I know this functionality can be approxiamated by using Shared Menus, but in my
case always using the touchpad on a laptop, a little slip or tremor
can make me open the wrong bookmark or lose the entire display. Also,
in a URLPro window I can find bookmarks much more quickly. It's a
spatial thing, I think.

I wouldn't be shocked to find this is in there somewhere, given Alco's way of
thinking of
just abut everything.

Dear List,

As you know, I prefer URL Manager Pro users move on to the Bookmark
Menu Extra of URL Manager Pro and don't use the Shared Menus
feature anymore.

However, a new browser has come out (SeaMonkey) and to make
Shared Menus appear in that browser, you'll need to install
Shared Menus Enhancer 1.5, which you can download from:

<ftp://ftp.url-manager.com/pub/osx/sme.zip>

Of course, if you use the Bookmark Menu Extra, you will not have
to install anything, since the Bookmark Menu Extra always shows.

Probably, this is because of some large notes. This was a new feature
in version 3.4.

If you have only a few bookmarks when large notes, you can
remove them and resave the file. Then UMP 3.1 should be able
to open the file normally.

Please let me know how this works out.

I suspect that the type failing to appear is type generated

You can export v3.4 bookmarks as an HTML and import it into v3.1. If

Manager Pro's
menubar it will open in that app rather than Safari...it's not a huge deal but
if there's some
way to keep it from doing it I'd be psyched. Thanks in advance,

P.S. I have Safari set as the default browser in URL MP.
