Announcements
Dear Anthap Members,
I am most pleased to announce the following opportunities for applied
anthropology students that you may wish to distribute.
1. The Student Committee of the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA)
is currently accepting nominations of dedicated and outstanding students
who are interested in becoming officers of the Student Committee for the
2001-2002 period.
Students wishing to apply must be enrolled at an accredited university
and be in good academic standing, and be willing and able to serve in
their positions for two years. The Student Committee is comprised of a
Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, a Secretary, A Treeasurer, and a
Communication Coordinator. All of these positions are open for
nominations. In addition, students may also serve in a more limited
fashion by participating on Special Task Subcommittees that are
established to create and implement Student Committee goals and
objectives such as, a Student Member Needs Assessment Survey, SfAA
Conference activities, SfAA Student Awards and Prizes Committees among
others. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable
experience in leadership roles, as well as, to create and promote a
unique forum for student goals, objectives and activities within the
Society.
Interested students should send; 1) a one-page vision statement that
includes the position they wish to fill and a proposal plan for said
postition, and 2) their CV/Resume to Anne Ballenger, Chair SfAA Student
Committee via e-mail at anneball@... or post 7220 Split Rail Lane
Laurel, Md. 20707. The nomination deadline is Jan. 20, 2001 and will be
stricly enforced. Nominees will be informed by Feb. 1, 2001 and new
Board Members will be installed at the SfAA Conference (March28-April 1,
2001) in Merida, Mexico. For further information, please contact myself
at the above e-mail address or visit the Student Committee Web Site at
http://members.tripod.com/anneballenger/student/nexus.html.
2. There are several unprecented opportunties for applied students at
this year's SfAA Conference in Merida, Mexico.
A. The annual SfAA Past President & Student Luncheon will be most
exceptional this year. Not only will there be more Past Presidents in
attendence (10-15) than in the past, but also the Student Committee has
arranged, with the sponsorship of the SfAA Conference Committee, to
provide 20 students with a free lunch! Now students can engage in
stimulating conversation without an additional strain on their
pocketbooks! On-line sign-up sheets have been posted at the Student
Committee Web Site
(http://members.tripod.com/anneballenger/student/nexus.html) and a
sign-up sheet will be available in Merida at the Conference Table.
Since this is such a great offer, I doubt that there will be spaces left
at the conference - so, I encourage students to visit the web site and
sign-up as quickly as possible.
B. The Student Committee will also be presenting a Special Event
Session for at the SfAA Conference; " The Real World of Applied
Anthropology: Dilemmas, Problems and Innovations in Practice". We have
invited an exceptional panel of senior applied anthropologists
practicing mainly outside of academia to explore how anthropologists, in
various roles, titles and jobs, practice applied anthropology.
Panelists will expose students to some problems, dilemmas and creative
ways in which anthropology has been applied successfully. The session
will inform students of the real life challenges and exigencies of work
and illustrate how others have achieved that which seems allusive in the
academic, corporate, government, NGO/CBO, private sector and
multidisciplinary world. The intent is to stimulate dialogue among
students and practitioners about innovative practice strategies and new
possibilities for applied anthropology in the real world.
Panelists at this time include: Dr. Lucy Cohen (Catholic) founder of the
Spanish Catholic Center, Dr. Murial Crespi (NPS) Chief Ethnographer at
the National Park Service, Dr. Elizabeth Briody (General Motors), Dr.
Salomon Nahmad, applied anthropologist/activist will speak on applied
anthropology in national and international organizations. Two more
panelists may be announced at a later date, as well. I strongly
encourage students come as attendees will be encouraged to discuss and
comment with panelists.
C. The SfAA Membership Committee and the Student Committee are
co-sponsoring the second annual Career Workshop organized Carla
Guerron-Montero. The Career Workshop will provide two sessions; 1)
Resume/CV counseling session with a practicing applied anthropologist
and 2) A "mock" job interview and feedback by a applied anthropologist.
All of the applied anthropologists will donate their time and experience
to help burgeoning students. Students will be able to sign up for this
event via our web site and at the Conference Registration Table
For further information regarding any of the Student Committee
activities or elections please contact myself at anneball@... or
visit the Student Committee Web Site at
http://members.tripod.com/anneballenger/student/nexus.html.
All the Best,
Anne Ballenger, Chair
SfAA Student Committee
