Denise Schmandt-Besserat, a major, major figure in the history of early
(pre-cuneiform) writing and literacy, will be giving a talk this Thursday
evening at Trinity University under the auspices of the Southwest Texas
Archaeological Society.

"Neolithic Symbolism at Ain Ghazal"
Ain Ghazal, a Neolithic site near Amman, Jordan, has produced an array of
symbolic material including, figurines, statues and plastered human
skulls. This lecture will present the material and discuss its cultural,
social and economic significance.
(Chapman Auditorium is more or less in the northwest corner of the Trinity
University campus right near the sculpture of the nude man).
If you wish to have dinner with Schmandt-Besserat, there will be a dinner
at J. Alexander's in the Quarry Mall at 5:30 pm. Mark Garrison from
Trinity Classics will be the host (not a paying host, alas) of the dinner.
