Subject: [anthrodesign] anthro internship
Dear all,
Enclosed is an announcement for a summer internship opportunity for an anthro/soc graduate student. It offers real fieldwork and work experience, travel opportunities, and good pay. I haven't put it as an attachment because I'm under the impression that this doesn't work on a list like this. If this is incorrect, or if there's some way to circulate the MSWord or PDF document through the list, maybe someone can let me know. Please feel free to circulate it as widely as possible. Please note that the existence of the position is still not 100% definite; it's contingent on funding but we need to start the application process now.
Thanks,
Mark

Kodak Professional Summer Internship Program in Anthropology & Ethnography
Eastman Kodak Company sponsors a summer internship program for graduate students interested in careers in design ethnography and/or applied cultural anthropology. The objectives of the program are to enhance the training of university students through applied experience at Kodak, to promote Kodak's relationships with research universities, and to apply talented help to new and ongoing research and product development projects at Kodak.
Program Structure
The Anthropology and Ethnography Summer Internship Program is a short-term (approximately three months) internship designed to fit within a student's academic schedule. The intent is for the student to contribute to applied research and development projects in a way that enhances rather than interrupts graduate education. Interns are required to relocate to Kodak's headquarters in Rochester, New York. The internship program will provide assistance with locating housing for the summer.
The internship is a paid position, with a competitive salary based on level of education and experience. Health benefits and life insurance are available. Travel expenses between the university and Rochester are reimbursed. Academic credit for the student's work during the internship can be arranged with his or her advisor, if university policy permits.
Job Responsibilities
Interns will work in Kodak's Corporate Design and Usability Research Lab on a variety of research and product development projects. Interns will work under the supervision of senior design ethnographers on tasks such as conducting literature reviews, developing and writing research proposals, conducting ethnographic interviews, analyzing qualitative data, elaborating product design and development implications, and creating research reports and presentations. While they receive guidance from senior staff, interns are allowed a high degree of autonomy in their work. They will also be expected to be available for domestic and international travel.
Environment
Kodak Corporate Design & Usability offices and laboratories are located in Rochester, New York. Facilities include an interactions laboratory, industrial design model shop, usability laboratory, video and sound editing studios, and a library. Our work environment is creative, dynamic, and unconstrained by conventional disciplinary boundaries. The division brings together experts in human factors, human-computer interaction, industrial design, graphic design, new media interaction design, ethnography, visual science, and cognitive psychology. Corporate Design & Usability staff employ user-centered design and usability engineering methods to enhance and redefine the experience of film and digital imaging. Corporate Design & Usability has a company-wide charter and enjoys management support to make a difference.
Qualifications for Candidates
* Completed at least two years in an accredited M.A./M.S. or Ph.D. graduate degree program in Anthropology, Sociology, or other related discipline.
* Coursework in ethnographic/qualitative research methods is essential. Additional coursework in relevant topic areas (human/computer interaction, science and technology studies, material culture studies, etc.) is beneficial.
* Experience with some or all of the following: designing, planning, conducting, and interpreting results from qualitative and/or ethnographic research projects.
* Research, work, or living experience outside the U.S. and competence in languages other than English are desirable (please specify language competencies).
* Experience with or understanding of user-centered design and product development is desirable.
* Professional competence and interest demonstrated by academic performance, creative energy, initiative, leadership, teamwork, and written and oral communications.
* United States citizenship or visa status that permits work in, and travel from, the U.S.
* Pass a drug screen as a condition of employment with Kodak.
