Robothon 2009 is four weeks away! Time to dust off those sumo-bots, line followers, and maze solvers! Drag those Robo-Magellan beasts out of the closet! Sharpen up those blades on your killer combat machines! Brush up on your Lego wizardry! Capture those crawlers and get 'em ready!

No matter what your event, register your robot now:

Still not sure if that pile of parts will become a robot? No problem! Register today anyways, it gives you a deadline to work towards! :^)

Need more incentive? Well, it helps planning to have a rough idea how many robots will participate in each event, so out of kindness and for the sake of the organizers' sanity please register early!

Feeling extra generous and want to support Robothon? Sign up as a volunteer and do your part to help make this another great event!

Thanks,
Bob Cook

Hi y'all!

I guess its time for me to introduce myself to the group... my name is Bill Henning, and I am a Parallax registered Propeller consultant living in Langley, BC. I wanted to come to todays meeting, however I only left the cruise ship at 9am and had to go to dim sum with family... I'll be at the next meeting.

I've always been fascinated with robotics, and I have been working with the propeller since 2006 - as a matter of fact I recently designed a Propeller based prototyping board with 12 servo headers that I call "Propteus". I'll bring a robot I built that is controlled by Propteus to the October meeting. If you are interested, there is more information on Propteus and my other designs on my site at http://Mikronauts.com

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at mikronauts _at_ gmail _dot_ com

Best Regards,

Bill

I emailed Bob off-line.

Hi everyone I received the following request and thought there might be someone who can help Nicholas:

I just started playing with electronics & microcontrollers.  I’m really enjoying it, but I have a lot to learn.  The reason I started is to build an automated sandblasting machine.  I have most of the components and am putting the machine together, but I am having issues learning the programming in this short amount of time (I am on rough time limit for getting the machine ready).  I bought a Parallax Propeller microcontroller to run the machine (need the I/O pins to run the amount of motors), but, as you probably know, this is not a novice’s microcontroller.  My question to you is, do you have anyone in your club that would like to give me a hand with the Spin programming (obviously I would pay).  The functions the unit has to perform I believe are quite simple, but yet way over my head.  Please don’t take this as an insult, I have viewed your page a few times recently, and am excited to start learning robotics from the ground up right after this project is complete.

Contact Nicholas at <nicklahay.alumtek@...> if you can help.

During the last meeting we talked about the sandblast robot and the Propeller
chip. And Arduino as a possible alternative. The op (sorry I forgot your name)
mentioned that he has some experience programming visual basic (IIRC).

I came across the library Firmata today (Firmata.org, apparently comes with the
default Arduino install), which allows you to control the Arduino with PC
software. And one guy was nice enough to write Visual Basic bindings:

http://www.acraigie.com/programming/firmatavb/default.html

Hope this helps,
Markus

PS: now I need an Arduino, some other guys wrote Smalltalk (squeak) bindings for
it ;).

Hi guys,

We will run a table top challenge at the end of the December meeting with the
following changes:

  1) The course will finally comply with the rules.
No more over extending white area outside the play field. This will make it
harder for the visually driven robots but makes it easier to decide if a robot
left the field or not. It also means there is only one seam left.

2) There is an additional 10 bonus points for the best X-mas
decoration/theme/lightshow.
Beware!!! Tinsel might be conducting ;)

Have fun,
Markus

Hi,

I'd be interested in one, but I'm up at SFU, and don't have time to travel far to get it.  If there's some way of me getting it without too much inconvenience on either person's part, count me in.

Yeah SFU is not an easy place to get to from Richmond, probably about

Hello Everyone,

I'm heading out of town for three months, and I have a few things up for grabs:

First, a small herd of nine Biobugs, used, with some remotes and instructions - Free!

Secondly, a small herd of three Roboreptiles, two of the green Toys-B-Us special with horns, and one white one - Free!

Thirdly, a Tribot with omnidirectional wheels - Free!

Fourthly, Tyco Typhoon RC Hovercraft collection of three, with 9.6V nicad batteries, charger, etc. - Free!

Fifthly, a collectible classic Meccano set, 1950's? from sets 0-8 (of 10), electric motors, 1970's electronics set, steam engine, instructions, etc. Asking $500.

All this will only be available for pick up Wednesday Nov 25, between 6-7 pm, at my house, rear basement, 4474 West 13th at Sasamat, in Point Grey.

Thanks, and see you in March 2010 (maybe...)!

Paul Nagelkerke
