Its about time to put it togethor

Here is something I made up for VRC based on the latest threads.

err...
http://eds.dyndns.org:81/
click on library, tutorials, and the parallel port one (its the only link)

I was surprised to find how intimmidating it was to put such a simple
thing togethor when I already knew how!!!

Anyhow, its prettymuch all there, It has kinda an abrupt ending, but
from there a person can play with breaking it to get it to do something
else.

From there, there are a lot of "howto's" with a wide variety of
projects, I put that togethor because none of the ones that I saw gave
me the impression the author had actually done it.

if anyone is up for some web-exploration, browse
http://eds.dyndns.org:81/~ircjunk/

      dan

p.s. Someone better make use of it cause I put about 5 hours into
it, and it sure wasn't for myself! I think I mauled the example code
enough to void the copyright....

Nice. Many of the pictures didn't seem to make it, they don't show up for me
(the schematic does, no pics below that).

The other thing is that its not actually required to copy the inpout32.dll
to the system directory. Put it into the same directory as your executable
and it will still work. Of course you'd have to do this for every project,
so putting it into the system directory might make sense if that is a
problem.

Hi.

Well, I recently got my Sumovore [and now I'm just waiting for this
interminable bout of OT to end ...] and I'm wondering how to obtain a
Mini-Sumo ring.

I can see that there are instructions for making one on the net, but I
don't have much experience with power tools, and it looks like a fair
bit of work [which I would rather channel into working on my robot.]

Is it possible to buy a Mini-Sumo ring? How much am I looking at?

Is there something quick I can rig up -- a sort of test rig or debug
version [I can't belive I just said that!] -- that would last a little
while?

Thanks,
Clinton

I've heard of people making them on a flat piece of paper: just draw
the circle out on a piece of paper and spray paint the middle part.
Probably you could find large poster board or something equivalent at
Staples. The inside of the ring should be black and the outside white.
You'll need to mark out the ring edge and tape it off with masking tape
or something similar. You won't quite get the same results since
normally the ring should be an inch off the ground (thus its more
obvious who is the winner when the other robot falls off the edge), but
it will allow you to deal with the majority of testing.

Hi All,

I did a real quicky by taking a large piece of white plastic sheet
and glued( 3M spray ) a piece of black construction paper onto
it.

You end up with a square ring instead of a round ring. What was
interesting was watching the sumo paint itself into a corner...
:-)  ...before I made a few adjustments.

It was good enough for testing and was quick to do, but if you
take the time to build a proper one out of wood you're better off.

Scribe a circle onto a piece of plywood and use a jigsaw.

If you want a perfect circle, use a plunge router and a guide-arm
that sets up your radius. When you attach the guide arm don't let
the screw come out the other side of the wood, that can be your
top surface when your done.

Hope this helps.

Hi.

In my wanderings over the Web, I found a company (SuperCircuits) that
offers a black and white pinhole camera for $12 US!
number=PC300XP&variation=&aitem=3&mitem=17]

The price made me do a double take. I mean, the CMUcam [http://www-2.
cs.cmu.edu/~cmucam/] sounds incredible, but it is $110 US (although it
seems to be specifically designed for use with hobbyist robotics, and
has numerous useful features).

So, presuming I got the twelve dollar camera, what hurdles would be
involved in digitizing the signal and interfacing it to a
microcontroller or computer? [I really wish I could find more info on
the $12 camera -- like what sort of video signal it generates. I
presume it is NTSC.]

Thanks,
Clinton

From the looks of the connector on that module it looks like just a
video out, probably NTSC. For a microcontroller you have to add a
bunch of extra circuitry to try to process the video signal directly.
If you just want a cheap way to interface a camera to the computer,
there is no better way than buying a USB camera for as low as $20
and you're done. Lot's of video processing libraries out there to
get you started.

The CMU cam uses a digital interface camera module. Basically you
clock out the byte values correspoinding to the pixel color in EACH
pixel location on the CCD. This way you only have a digital
interface.

Radek

If you want to play with object recognition and higher level
functions stick with your USB camera and the high memory and
processing and liberies available on your PC.
If you want to do basic color blob tracking like the CMU, pick up a
digital interface module.
Here is a nice source for modules

The 11 of Sept. is the first day available since the first Saturday
is on a long weekend.

The department chair and the instructor teaching related subjects
both like the idea so if people are still interested its a go.

Thats building 3 room 121 on 77 Ave near 134 st. (about two blocks
west of King George Hwy). So what do you think.

I have ordered one Solarbotics Sumovore and if we like it we may
include it in a course.

I bought some heat shrink tubing and the discount brought the price from

Hello Everyone,

I have in my possession a Linx Master Evaluation/Starter kit for 900 MHz
digital and analog transmission.

It has two transmitters and two receivers, and two development boards.
These date from the ancient days of electronics (1998), and are no longer
featured on the Linx website. These are model HP-1 but the newer HP-3
models are similar:

http://www.linxtechnologies.com
http://www.linxtechnologies.com/interface.php?section=products&category=eval_sys\
tems&subcategory=hp-3_mdev

The RF modules are:
TXM-900-HP
RXM-900-HP

Specs:
5-16 VDC, 14-16 ma
900 MHz, 8 channel selectable
50 Hz-25KHz Analog signal
300 bits/second - 50K bits/second Data rate
Range > 1/4 mile

Universal development boards have RS-232 built-in.

Add two more stubby antennas and you have a full duplex two way
communications system with
two transmitter-receiver pairs.

Original evaluation kit number: MDEV-900-HP ($299 USD)

This whole package is free to the best project to be completed in the next
few months.
Preference will go to school or ongoing projects that need this type of two
way communications.

Bring your proposals to the next meeting and I will award this set to the
project that can use it the most.

I will be away until after the long weekend, so have fun!

Paul.

Hi guys,

I have a bunch of MPEG files (from Robothon, and ECRG) from my CAMCorder
that I'd like to convert into MPEG files suitable for web viewing.

Currently, the files are around 40 Mb for a minute and a half video
clip.

So I'm looking for some software that I can use to do the conversion,
and though I'd ask for any recommendations. Ideally, I'd like to find
something that has a trial version so that I can try it out first.

Dear Mr. Hylands,

Would you like something that can compress your MPEG files but still
allow it to be viewed within the browser (i.e. not as a ZIP or RAR
file)? If so, you may want to try the free FlaskMPEG. I believe it can
encode video files into different formats and you can also set the
bitrate. Are the original files in MPEG2? If they are, then
downgrading them to MPEG1 should reduce the size.

Hope this helps!

With regards,

Kenneth Wong.

Yeah, I'm not trying to compress (ala zip) but reencode. I'll give
FlaskMPEG a try and see what happens...

Yep - Thanks

Sigh...

Unfortunately, FlaskMPEG crashes on me. I tried both the Stable and
latest versions. They crash in totally different places. I guess I'll be
googling for another reencoder.

Hi Dave, I simply use Windows Media Encoder. It's Free from
microsoft (google for it)and if you output to a V9 codec in wmv file
format you get the best look per bit rate.
Only draw back is that you need windows media player to play it, but
you can use mpeg4 output as well to be more compatible to other
platforms.

Dear Dave,

Perhaps you can try TMPGEnc. I believe it is mainly for outputting to
VideoCDs though.

How fast is your processor? And how much RAM is in it? Most of the
encoding utilities demand a very powerful computer to operate.

Hope this helps. :)

With regards,

Kenneth Wong.

Hi Kenneth,

I have a 1.7 GHz Pentium-M (equivalent to about a 2.5 GHz Pentium 4),
with 512 Mb RAM.

It seems I've tried TMPGEnc for something in the past because it tells
me the 15 day trial has expired. I'm just waiting to contact the author,
since they're away until early Sept. I also haven't found any good
guidelines about what settings to use. I'll play around a bit and see
what I can figure out.

So far, DivX and WMV look promising.

The Windows Media Encoder is definitely the easiest of the programs to
use. Now I just have ti figure out batch mode (I downloaded the SDK, so
I should be able to create a command line front-end).

Thanks

Hi Dave,

You might find Virtual Dub usefull.
I used it for changing the footage of the solar-powered
Aqua-vore from ASF to AVI.

And it's free (GNU).
Just do a google search you find lots of links.

Hope this helps.
