I had preheated the bottom electrode to bright orange and rolled it in
some salt, which provides the ions

I'm ordering some stuff from Digikey. Since sometimes you only want to order one
or two items, given the cost of shipping it makes sense to combine our orders
together. It works the same was as it usually does: I'll bring your stuff to the
February meeting, you bring me cash for your parts + taxes (I've got the
shipping covered - I'm definitely ordering anyways).

If you are interested to add some stuff let me know by Tuesday 10pm. Send me the
Digikey part number, quantity, and what you think the price is (to make sure I'm
ordering the thing you really want).

Hey everyone,

Although most of you may not know me (unless we've happened upon each other at the WCRG one time or another), amongst my robotics interests is Mini Sumo. Are there any other Mini Sumo enthusiasts in Vancouver? I've got a mini I'm getting back into working order, and hoping (planning?) to take it to Robothon in the fall. (Time and money may prevent me from making the WCRG this year now that I don't live 3 hours away from Calgary anymore)

I've got a ring, it would be neat to have some fun matches at the monthly meetings (If you guys don't do that already!)

Cheers,
Roger

Hi Roger!

There have been quite a few minisumos built and run by various people, including myself, but recently many people have switched to working on Robo-Magellan type robots or walking robots or micromouse or ... (fill in the blank with your favorite thing).

On the other hand, maybe a demo of your robots can revive some interest!  :^)

I might even be able to find "The Thin Man" (http://www.bobandeileen.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=1513) somewhere in my workshop and see it still works.

Nice work! Looks similar to my mini, except I used Delrin and isn't quite as thin! I've got to re-build the controller, but hopefully will have it up and running in the next few months to bring in. Here are the build details (Almost 2 years old now!)

I'm thinking of entering robo-magellan eventually with my walking robot when I finally get it up and walking. I don't think it'll be large/fast enough to be competitive on a large course, but it'll be interesting to give it a go...

Cheers,
Roger

I will be ordering stuff from Digikey. If you would like to combine orders, please let me know before 10:00 am Saturday Morning. I will bring the order to the next February meeting. I will cover shipping.
You bring cash for your parts + taxes.

In your order please include the Digi-Key Part Number, Manufacturer Part Number, "estimated price" and quantity

Maker Faire Vancouver information is now available at their website:
http://vancouver.makerfaire.ca/

In addition there is a special event advertised on the Vancouver Hackspace
mailing list (see below). Seems to be targeted at people who want to learn more
about participating (hint: maybe some of us should attend if we want to organize
something for the main event in June).

Hi I am excited to find out that there is a Robitics club in Vancouver!

I am setting up a Studio in Burnaby and we are looking to set up a Robotics course for kids.
If anyone from the Robotics club is interested please contact me via e-mail.

I'd like to make some whisker-type touch sensors and I found a great site about
making springs at

Now to find a source of spring wire. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of dropping
in to a Tom Lee Music shop but would they be a good source? At this point I'm
looking for something quite light.

Thanks.

I seem to recall that hobby shops carried this as well (I seem to
recall it being called piano wire or something).

Attached please find the latest copy of the Churbie

You could try Lee's electronics on Main, but you would have to call or drop in to see. Active/Future, and http://www.rpelectronics.com/ are other possibilities, and again, you would have to drop in or call.

I looked at Digikey, but nothing in stock, and pricing was a lot higher than I expected. You may want to check ebay, some sellers have expedited shipping...

What cabling or hub or switch is required to connect the host canbus computer to other 2 canbus devices?

CAN is typically wired as a daisy chain, with 120 ohm termination at each end. I
believe you can buy gear or simply wire it up yourself.

Each of the  3 hosts only has one can interface.

So I need to either a hub or a multi-drop canbus cable. I guess my question is how to build multi-drop canbus cable. Is this just a simple mult-drop cable with all connectors in parallel and with 120 ohm termination at each connector?

There should only be terminators at the ends of the bus (which is typically long). If you are going to literally connect the three modules together in a star configuration with short wires you may not need them.

Some logic analyzers can decode CAN, you could use one to check that messages are coming through clearly.

thx,

I am in toronto for a couple more weeks, I will see if I can get access to a logic analyzer which can decode CAN.

There should only be terminators at the ends of the bus (which is typically long). If you are going to literally connect the three modules together in a star configuration with short wires you may not need them.

Some logic analyzers can decode CAN, you could use one to check that messages are coming through clearly.

So I need to either a hub or a multi-drop canbus cable. I guess my question is how to build multi-drop canbus cable. Is this just a simple mult-drop cable with all connectors in parallel and with 120 ohm termination at each connector?

CAN is typically wired as a daisy chain, with 120 ohm termination at each end. I believe you can buy gear or simply wire it up yourself.

For future use after I return to vancouver, what is your thoughts on
http://www.usbee.com/index.html
or does hackspace currently have a logic analyzer which can decode CAN?

If I end up getting one. I would probably want to share it with hackspace members. Since I don't have ANY space for a home lab.

I have one of the Saleae Logic analyzers (http://www.saleae.com/logic/) which is very similar to the USBee SX model. Last time I really studied them, the USBee model was more mature but Windows only. The Saleae model offers a cross platform software package, but offers fewer protocol decoders and the software is pretty basic. On the other hand, it does everything I need in a logic analyzer.

There are plenty of other analyzers out there, many are more sophisticated and usually more expensive. The downside of the USB-based models like Saleae or USBee is the requirement for a fast computer with lots of memory doing nothing but capturing data. Higher end models capture data internally and can run offline from your computer.

I am looking for a controllable 13" to 15" electric linear actuator.

I am currently in Toronto, I would like to used it in these weeks
before I return to Vancouver.
