VLSI EDUCATION IN INDIA
Abstract
The issue of VLSI education in India resolves itself into some
obvious and straightforward questions, such as: what to teach
(i.e. curriculum), how to teach it (laboratory and project styles,
choice of design tools etc.) and how to scale up the number of
students trained in this field per year.
Unfortunately, answers to these questions are not so obvious
and straightforward. This is because, interwoven with these
answers are some issues which need some thought, debate and dis-
cussion. For example, what is the role of the industry and the
government in VLSI education? How to forge a constructive rela-
tionship between academic institutions, the VLSI Industry and var-
ious government bodies? How to attract quality faculty to aca-
demic institutions, while keeping the industry well supplied with
trained manpower? Equally important is the need for making a
clear distinction between "education" and "industrial training".
Too often, this distinction is blurred in discussions about VLSI
education, which then leads to muddled conclusions.
In this talk, I shall discuss some of these issues, and
describe some initiatives which have been taken to answer the
questions raised by this discussion.
