Do some research that the camera you buy isn't prone to
arbitrary "condensation" shutdowns.

I've got a JVC GR70 model that I got very cheap as an "open-box"
item at Best Buy. It's been pretty good, although the zoom mechanism
and the tape whine come through on the audio pretty strongly at
times.

But a couple of times the condensation feature has shut it down for
an hour or so. Admittedly this was in extreme conditions once or
twice - skiing in subzero conditions and then going into the warmth
and humidity of a ski lodge. But warming the camera to a point that
would get rid of any condensation doesn't seem to fix the problem -
you just seem to have to sit and wait an hour, which is really
annoying.

I would recommend looking for an open-box, but check out the
warranty and DO think about why the person might have returned it
(i.e. crappy quality, poor functionality). And search the web to see
if many people have had the condensation problem occurring for no
apparent reason.

I enquired with iTunes a while back about getting some stats from
them about how many people are subbed to our feed. Here's the
response I got today; seems to confirm what I thought. He sent me
all-new RSS specs for iTunes and I'll post these to the Files
section of this group. Hope it helps someone.

Apple dude and I converted this to a PDF, posting both the HTML and
PDF versions to the Files section of this group.

Soc.sexuality.spanking FAQ

1. INTRODUCTION TO S.S.S.

1.1 What is soc.sexuality.spanking all about?

Soc.sexuality.spanking (s.s.s.) is a moderated group that came into existence as a result of the growth of off-topic (commercial and binary) posts that began to dominate alt.sex.spanking (a.s.s.). The discussions on s.s.s. cover topics dealing with spanking in an erotic context, whether as fantasy or real experiences. In addition, s.s.s. includes discussions on real life discipline between adults, and sightings of spanking scenes in books, t.v., and movies.

1.2 Why another group, and why is it moderated?

The reason for the move to a moderated newsgroup in a new hierarchy was to ensure that the high signal-to-noise ratio (On-Topic vs. Off-Topic posts) that made a.s.s. so popular early on, was given new life. After long discussion in a.s.s., it was determined that the most effective way to ensure control over the modern spam phenomenon and other off-topic posts, was to moderate the group.

1.3 What exactly is moderation?

Moderation is an invisible process for anyone whose posts remain on-topic. Moderation ensures that the majority of articles posted to soc.sexuality.spanking are on-topic; that is, that the posts meet the basic criteria outlined in the s.s.s. charter. Moderation is accomplished with a combination of a robotic (or automatic) moderator (the bot), and human moderators .

The bot filters posts automatically, based on the s.s.s. charter criteria. The human moderators are responsible for communication with posters who make inappropriate posts, for ensuring that questions from posters who do not understand why their posts were rejected are answered promptly, and for answering technical questions about the newsgroup.

1.4 What does moderation mean for me?

It means that your time in s.s.s. will be more enjoyable, as you won't have to spend as much time wading through the volume of spam that infests most sex-topic groups. It means that the stories and discussion threads will be easy to find, and easy to follow.

1.5 Why is this newsgroup so friendly?

The vast majority of people who post to s.s.s want to talk about spanking rather than to argueor fight. Many felt that a.s.s. had the highest signal-to-noise ratio of any of the alt.sex newsgroups. People whose only contributions were flames were not well received. Regaining the feelings of community and support was the reason for the formation of s.s.s, and in s.s.s. the tradition of welcoming newcomers with open arms continues.

1.6 Is spanking a form of BDSM?

Whether one considers spanking a sub-set of BDSM (bondage, discipline; dominance, submission; sadism, masochism) is a matter of personal preference. Some people relate only to spanking, while some relate to the broader spectrum of BDSM.

1.7 What is the difference between spanking and spousal abuse?

At a minimum, the difference would be whether there was consent of the person receiving the spanking. If it is an erotic spanking, the recipient has the right to getting some kind of pleasure from it. If it is for real life discipline, there has to be a clear understanding of the conditions of that framework, and the consent of the receiver to those conditions. See Sections 5.6 thru 5.8 of this FAQ for more detailed discussions of consensuality.

1.8 What is the difference between spanking and flagellation?

Spanking is a subset of flagellation. The spankings of interest to s.s.s. are reminiscent of childhood spankings that were administered at home and school and that were applied primarily to the buttocks. This includes spankings with hands, paddles, belts, straps, hairbrushes, switches, and canes.

1.9 Is it possible to meet people through this newsgroup?

Yes. By becoming a positive participant of s.s.s., others may become interested in meeting you. While there appears to be a higher than normal ratio of females to males in this newsgroup, males still outnumber females so women will find it easier to meet men, and men will find it easier to meet other men.

1.10 Is it appropriate to post personal ads here?

No. Those who post personal ads will receive a note explaining that personals should be posted to alt.personals.spanking, alt.personals.spanking.punishment, or soc.personals.

1.11 What is alt.personals.spanking?

Alt.personals.spanking is the appropriate newsgroup for posting to or reading, when seeking spanking partners thru personal ads. Other appropriate groups are alt.personals.spanking.punishment, and soc.personals.

1.12 Is it appropriate to post binaries here?

No. Binaries will be rejected under the terms of moderation. Please post binaries to alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.spanking.

1.13 What is alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.spanking?

Alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.spanking is the appropriate newsgroup to post binaries (pictures) of spanking erotica.

1.14 Might I find certain postings to be offensive or distasteful?

Yes. You should assume that there will always be some articles that do not conform to your tastes or sensibilities. If a significant portion of the articles offend you then this newsgroup is probably not for you. If you believe certain things should be censored then YOU take responsibility, and censor what YOU read.

1.15 What is "delurking" and how do I do it?

To "lurk" is to read a newsgroup without posting. To "delurk" is to begin posting to a newsgroup, usually with an introduction. Your introductory post is a good time to tell people about yourself and your particular tastes in spanking. The delurks that seem to generate the best responses are ones with distinctive headers (ie Delurk from Sara, or The Bronx Bomber Delurks).

Good information to include in a delurk post includes, but is not limited to: childhood spanking experiences, sexual spanking experiences, the kinds of articles you like to see posted to soc.sexuality.spanking, your particular spanking tastes, etc.

Of course, you are free to post anything you like but negative criticism right out the gate will not endear you to the other participants. Many are content to read the posts of others; however, those who participate by posting are able to realize the full potential of what this newsgroup has to offer.

1.16 What is the roster and why should I submit an entry?

The S.S.S. Roster is similar to a club roster. It is a compilation of brief spanking biographies of some of the participants of this newsgroup. It is updated and posted every month or two.

There are several reasons why you might want to list your entry in the roster. The roster serves as an extended delurk so that others who come along later may become familiar with you even though your initial delurk is gone. You may wish to include geographical information so that others in your area may contact you.

1.17 I'm female. Will I be inundated with unwelcome e-mail solicitations if I delurk or list an entry in the roster?

As is the case with most sex-topic newsgroups, females generally get more attention than males. Some of this attention comes in the form of e-mail and there is always the risk that you may find a particular message to be offensive; however, the female participants of soc.sexuality.spanking have reported that, for the most part, the e-mail they've received is polite. Again, soc.sexuality.spanking is a cut above most other sex-topic newsgroups.

If, for whatever reason, you absolutely, positively, cannot receive spanking-related e-mail then *DO NOT* post to soc.sexuality.spanking unless you are using a reliable anonymous re-mailer. To post with the admonition not to respond is to place an unrealistic amount of faith in the willingness of hundreds of thousands of anonymous people to respect your wishes.

Your file extensions are .m4v so when I click on your video it's asking
me to open it in iTunes.

I'd prefer that it opens up on the browser page with QuickTime.

Can you make your files have a .mov extension?

Josh,

I think if you read those new podcasting specs that I've posted in
the files section, you might be able to solve your problem.

Check out the bit where you can "report a concern" and have your
podcast removed. Presumably you could then resubmit.

Or if you've changed your feed address, you can include a redirect in
the RSS.

I realise your situation must be excruciatingly frustrating, but I
don't want to give out this guy's e-mail address just now, simply
because I'd like to try and cultivate him as a contact for the
videoblogging community. If he were suddenly bombarded with e-mails
he might switch off; I know I would. I don't know the bloke's
position at iTunes but I seem to have got a line of communication
open and I don't want to risk it.

I hope the new podcast specs help you out and I'll do my best to see
if we can get iTunes to "open up" to us a bit!

All the best,
Waz.

Steve, you *should* be able to choose what an .m4v file opens with,
though there is another problem, possible related - misconfigured server...

First look at URL shows a 302 redirect, all good:

curl -I http://blip.tv/file/get/Tagami-HalloweenStoryTake2IPodVer782.m4v
HTTP/1.1 302 Found
Location:
http://55broad.video.blip.tv/Tagami-HalloweenStoryTake2IPodVer782.m4v

Second URL shows a mime-type of text/plain:

curl -I
http://55broad.video.blip.tv/Tagami-HalloweenStoryTake2IPodVer782.m4v
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Content-Type: text/plain

I'm not exactly sure what mime-type to use for m4v, but it ain't text/plain.

Blip.tv guys, is this a fix for you to make?

Hey Terry,

Do you mean "insulated", or "inculcated" or "indoctrinated"? I'm not
trying to be a smart-arse, I'm just not sure what you might mean by
becoming insulated by this group.

I think it's interesting that it took so long for you to discover
vlogs. In my case, I discovered them early this year because I had
sort of assumed they would exist as a natural offshoot of blogs. So I
went looking for them, and before I knew it I was a vlogger. Funny
how people like us come wandering along and discover a subculture.

If we want to be "stumbled across", I think maybe people have to give
up on this word "vlog" as being a way to describe what we do to a
general audience. I'm sure there are people who don't really care
whether the world in general looks at their vlog. But I think if you
want people to find you, it's a good idea to include terms
like "podcast", "video podcast" and "video blog" somewhere on your
site. In my view these are much more likely to be punched into search
engines than "vlog".

What I'm saying is, use the v-word amongst vloggers but maybe less so
when talking to the rest of the world.

Actually Josh, I think this is the original address I used, although
it's not the person who replied:

agardner@...

I'm giving this address because it was publicly available on one of
Apple's websites and had something to do with iTunes, maybe music
licensing. But to be honest I can't remember exactly where I found it.

I'd suggest politeness - not saying you're normally impolite of
course - and maybe some sort of sacrificial offering to Jobsy!

I too was just contacted by Apple this morning. As many of you know,
the LBV feed is not working in iTunes. The issue started a few days
ago and its affect can be seen in our stats...

http://www.vlogmap.org/feedburner/fbfeed.php?fbid=leanbackvids

After explaining my issue to Apple in detail, I sat and waited almost
72 hours for a response. Their solution?...

"If you are the publisher of this podcast, you can update your podcast
by changing the data in your RSS feed. Here's a link to a web page
that contains the extended podcasting RSS specification for iTunes:"

http://phobos.apple.com/static/iTunesRSS.html

That is weak! Change your code? Yeah, no shit.

They obviosly did not read my email so I've replied back... but now
I'm in 72-hour queue again. Maybe next time they'll tell me to just
"think different".

Hi All,

I haven't been able to keep up with the posts lately, so if this has already
been posted, please forgive :o)

I just found a new software program that rips DVDs to iPod at
http://www.pqdvd.com/dvd-to-ipod-video-converter.html

I haven't tried it or heard anything because I don't have an iPod, but
thought you all might be interested in checking it out.

If you're looking for DVD-to-AVI, also check out VirtualDUB if your on
a PC. It's open source and from my experience does a great job for
capturing as well as 'clipping' selections from the material.

Cheers,
Gary

Was hoping you guys would have a look at it and not get bogged down in technicals.. ;)

There is now a link to a MOV version on my site, tagami.com

I am not happy with my MOV compressions vs the M4V. Can anyone offer hints to raise the image quality and lower the file size?

I can honestly say that sometimes I get really sick of always being in

Actually, all three of those might be apt. But I meant "insulated" in
the idea that once you've become aware of vlogs/ video blogging (and
anything else for that matter) you've become irreversibly separated
from those that AREN'T aware of it. Does that make any sense?

For example: I follow politics pretty closely, both nationally and
locally. When I read something about the Supreme Court, and it mentions
Scalia or Beyers, I know exactly who they are -- but just morning, one
of my co-workers made a comment that she had never heard his name
before. My gast was flabbered. But the thing is, there are probably
way more people in the US that DON'T know who Scalia is.

It's also like the idea - when you're looking into buying a specific
car, you start noticing that car EVERYWHERE. So it's like all of a
sudden, everyone went out the same day, and bought the same car you're
interested in. Of course, that's not the case.

So I guess my point (finally!) is that it's near impossible to
understand where non-vlogging journalists or businessmen are coming
from when they try to cover the phenomenon or even make money off of it.

In the NerdTV  Show #6 Interview with Dave Winer, http://www.pbs.org/cringely/nerdtv/shows/ , Dave talks about how Netscape first took his idea of RSS and didn't compeletely implement it and then Dave released a new, better version with his features added to  Netscapes' implementation that became the standard.  It's the third or fourth guy that often becomes the standard.
