I had a sneaky feeling you were screwing with us, particularly when I
searched for mefeedia on Google News and Technorati and couldn't find
any coverage of it. (btw, when I searched for it on Technorati, all
the google ads on the page had to do with killing fire ants:

     * Tired of Fire Ants? Control fire ants in your lawn for one full
year with one treatment. www.nofireants.com
     * Terminix - Fire Ant Terminix offers guaranteed pest control
services for your home and business. Visit Terminix.com to learn about
controlling various pests. Safeguard your home - schedule a free
evaluation. www.terminix.com

days. It is safe to human, animals and poultry. This pest control
product comes with risk-free, 100% money-back guarantee.

Not exactly fireANT, are they? Got a nice laugh out of that.

Anybody wanna donate some money to us so we can outbid the

Hey -- Vlogging Dangerously -- I know all about that... The FBI
actually showed up at my house for one of my vlogs which led to me
being subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury which we've been
fighting to quash. How's that for vlogging dangerously?

hi Andrew,

i think you should talk about issues that are important to you and to rocketboom. while many who post here regularly might not be interested in those topics, we do have a huge list of members and i'm sure many of them would be interested. also, there will be many at vloggercon who are not members of this group at all that would be interested in those topics.

one of the nice things about a conference is that there are a variety of speakers and panels on a variety of topics. people can choose the ones that deal with issues they are interested in and not with those that don't.

for myself, i'm interested in all aspects of online video - from the personal to the proffessional. From political documentaries and talk shows to heightening individual communications between distant friends and public journalizing, and from amateur "home movies" to experimental art pieces.

I want to see a Vloggercon that encompasses possibility and encourages creative solutions.

We are trying to figure out what would be the best angle to discuss
at Vloggercon for our panel with Rocketboom and so I thought we
should probably just ask what you think would be the most interesting
or useful direction.

At first we were considering a discussion about how the world is
coming together over video online, though you know more than anyone
about that already.

We also thought it might be useful to discuss all kinds of business
aspects, including contracts, deals, ways to consider monetizing or
not, more ways to promote and distribute, business horror stories,
etc. but I'm not sure if the majority of videobloggers would find
that useful either.

There is also the topic of "show" and "format", but again, I don't
know if many people are interested in that.

Over the past year, in other cases of panels, its been pretty easy to
figure out because the audiences have been almost entirely out of the
loop so whatever the thread of the conference was, we would just talk
about our take on the matters.

So here we are with all like-minded people and wondering what we
could do to be the most helpful

Any ideas?

Thanks Melanie!
I will add the site to your directory. I have visited and recommended your site to my new media friends in NYC! It is an excellent site!
We will return the RSS feed that we had earlier and will also provide a weekly mpeg4 downloadable format soon.

thanks again, BTW I found someone to help on craigslist! Crisis averted.

I visited your site and noticed everything was Flash-based with no way

If you'd prefer not to answer here, you can email me off list at

LOL! You mean videoblogging isn't a subset of pest control?

One day I want to see a commercial parody of the now famous "cat
hearders" commercial...

Fireant, Vlogdir, Mefeedia, Blip, Ourmedia, place your company name
here....

We make wrangle yer' videos so you don't have to.

Yeeehaa!

Head em up! Move em out!

LOL

Also, I'm still sort of hoping at the end of the day I can write a
blog post about all the companies Yahoo bought today. Nothing would
please me more than to have gigantic list. Hint, Hint. ;)

BTW, You do realize this is a common theme. Last year there were a
number of them. If my memory serves me correctly among others I think
it was Weblogs Inc. or Engadget who started a rumor that they got
bought out by yahoo for April fools.

I really enjoyed catching up on this thread.

We need more yahoos on the web. Not Yahoo!, but the type of crazy
yahoo's that make meta and media wranglin' startups. Aggregators, to
search engines, to hosting companies, to open source vlogging
platforms and plugins.

Last time I guestimated there were no less that 30 or 40 video
sharing services and yet there's still not enough of the right kind.
I've completely lost track, but the important ones are the vlogorific
ones, and there's only a small handful of those.

Cheers to vlog services and above all to the vloggers who make it all
that make it all worth while.

i guess you're a function over form guy Mike ;)

You got me pegged Markus. I've lost it.

I've become all function over form, I'm a designer, I was trained as a proper designer, and yet I've been advising peter on what I call "undesigning" on mefeedia and perhaps worst of all I'm super stoked about the results. :)

...and that would explain why I'm using Apple iPhoto 6.0 to aggregat photocasts from all my Flickr ah 23hq friends when it's a beastly piece of crappy software. (Bloatware).

It also explains why I'm boycotting iPhoto 6.02 which performs much better. However it doesn't have my all important gods gift to social media the beautiful, ever-living and ever-loved permalink!

I credit FireAnt with spoiling me on this all important feature early on and I cry myself to sleep at night that I must use iTunes to aggregate videos onto my iPod. Try as I may it is no substitute.

I've even given this deamon a name. I call it meta-basterdization or bastardized media. It's what happens when media become seperated from it's vlog, blog, photocast, or otherwise looses it's metadata.  What happens when media looses its permalink.

Being as I am an uber media geek and can no loger help it I can oft be heard saying,  "Meta-basterdization is contrary to the ways of the lightnet."

And all this has nothing to do with Lan so I hope he will forgive me for taking this opportunity to de-rail this great thread with my ranting ways.

One day hopefully someone will explain to me why Apple is boycotting podcasters and video bloggers and photobloggers websites and why we're putting up with?

If you understand it please let me know. I am baffled... befuddled, a twitching clueles rage...  and I can't seem to get dialed into the "Where in the hell are my permalinks apple!" meme. I cannot find the handle on it, for if I could I would compile a hella debate on the importance of permalinks, but alas all the dissenting voices remain scattered like sticks in the wind.

Perhaps I'm not trying hard enough. Maybe I should call out "Vloggers! Photocasters! Podcasters! Unite!"
...and start a campaign for podcasters to boycott Apple.

I'm not so certain it's a completely absurd idea anymore. iTune has supported podcasting for over a year and still no permalinks.  It is no "gift horse" that I know of that behaves so arrogantly in the face of a "consumer revolution" culture. They have expend their good will needlessly, the cost is to high us, and I want my damn permalinks back!

Seriously... does anyone miss permalinks?  I feel like I'm the only one who's having a hissy fit. :)

in case you prefer other formats, here's some video:
http://apperceive.blogs.com/apperceive/2006/03/echo_park_film_.html

or some audio:
http://apperceive.blogs.com/apperceive/2006/03/echo_park_film__1.html

I'm biased of course, but i think LAN took some great photos and that's more important than the choice of player

I'm sorry Lan, Markus and whomever else I offended. I whole heartedly apologize. I didn't mean anything personal by it, I've obviously cracked and lost my handle on the whole idea of experimentation that's made this all possible.  I guess somewhere between the grassroots community and companies like apple caching in on podcasting and vlogging and photocasting something always gets lost in translation. There is some formulation of a standard that has been missed. Perhaps if I issued a license for my RSS feed and got others to do so also stating that my RSS can only be used if proper attribution is given in the form of a permalink we could then file a class action suit against apple to finally get them to acknowlege they are being not figurative, but actual bastards. I appologize for the use of that term, but it is infact the proper term. My media is without parents. :(

In my defense I did immediately yesterday "flickr friend" Lan, favorite a bunch of his photos, make several comments and subscribe to his photocast feed in iPhoto (6.0.0!) so I'd never miss another one of his photos again, nor the ability to fav and comment on them.

i guess the best answer is "photocast" and then you can pick your viewer of choice

then you can watch them in fireant or something

Exactly!

I've been bugging Josh K. about true photocast support in Fireant. It would make a GREAT photocast tool, but it doesn't support JPEG enclosures, nor Media RSS (mRSS) yet. Please note, I'm speaking strictly of the mac version. Not sure about the Win version which I haven't had the pleasure of using in a while.

I'd like to point out that Nathan over at openvision.tv is developing I/ON to support photocasts, though it's still in beta.

I've also created a photocasting group on Flickr, though I have yet to announce it.

It's part of my ongoing obsession in developing discussion around all areas of podcasting... audio, photo, and video. Please feel free to join up. I can't promise you much but I can promise you big beautiful highres photos in your photocasting aggregator, if only my own. :)

but then flickr would have to get it's RSS feeds together (they suck - they ignore creative commons based searches)

Hmm... I think you may be right. Their media RSS support is a very good start in my opinion. I'm VERY pleased with their initial implementation, but there are still a few eccentricities that must be worked out.

In summary, I'm sorry for using Lan beautiful photos and this thread as a touch point to discuss my "issues" of form and functionality and hope that my ubergeeking can be forgiven by all of our mutual love for the almighty permalink that truely does bind us all.

Peace, and amen.

No offence Lan, but I found your slide show viewer a little silly. The navigation was hard to use because of the scaling and it kept moving as the picture format changed, also there were no captions and most importantly there was nowhere to comment so I could tell you how much I like your photos. If I may suggest Flickr or 23hq.com or some other such photosharing site in the future, I'm sure you'll get loads of comments and discussion. Also, that way I can mark you as a friend or subscribe to your RSS feed so I'll be sure to recieve future photos from you.
Peace, and thanks for posting the photos.

Sull, just to be clear, I for one don't want to see you in your

been so much of that going around that with this group you really
never can tell what you'll see next.

Keep your pants on people. :)

This is the videoblogging group right?

We have a serious lack of boundries here. I know that's what I love

Perhaps we should start a "naked videoblogging" group?

LOL everyone.

Frankly, I think you should look at Rocketboom's success and ask
yourself "why are we different? Why did we make it?"

I, for one, would be fascinated at the answer. You're in a unique
position, and therefore have a unique perspective to share.

Sweet plugin Enric. I know I've been quiet, but when I talk about the
need for independant, open source development to extend the video
blogging platform and make vlogging more accessible to everyone. This
is exactly what I mean. Wordpress in particular is an excellent
place to start.

BTW, did you catch the Wordpress "podpress" plugin. I realized after
I posted it that there had already been some lite discussion of it.
But I haven't heard a peep from anyone who's tried it in the vlog
community. They've discussed it heavily on the podcasting yahoo group.

BTW, sorry it's taking so long to get spreadthemedia.org going.
We're all very busy people, but someday soon we'll have a wikiesque
directory of open source projects... It just takes time.

Peace,

I think hearing about your business experiences would be very valuable
to many people, but it is also political. Although many of us see the
medium as a possible career path, others think it's important to be a
"struggling arteest". Of course, those people don't have to attend
your panel... but I have a feeling you don't want to drive away your
audience.

Personally, I would like to see you discuss your business experiences.
As a community we can learn from your successes/flops and figure out
what works together. I think it would also be interesting to hear
about any opportunities you may have turned down.

Interesting thread.

Something that drives me crazy about this group is that there is some serious confusion about what is and is not spam.

When someone posts about a vlog they are proud of, some people tend to think that it is spam. I actually apologized for spamming the group when I posted a piece that I was proud of (thanks for the feedback for all of you that viewed and reviewed it). I think that is a problem.

I found nothing seriously distatasteful about the VLOGGERS UNITE thread from Jason, the original poster, and in his mea culpa, he brought up some issues that are important to me. Namely the fact that RSS is some kind of tool to get exposure. It is not a tool for exposure. It is simple distribution; it is shipping, more or less.

I notice that most of the people who responded with angst in this thread have pretty good name recognition within this community. I am not attacking anyone, but I think that those of you who are established Vloggers don't really see the problems for getting exposure for a new Vlog. You all created this, and have deep (or not so deep) relationships with the other members of the community. People go to your Vlogs to learn. Your vlogs show up at the top of mefeedia, and have huge interconnected distribution channels because of that.

There are now almost 7000 feeds at mefeedia. When I started Vlogging in December '05 there were 3000. How many were there when you started Vlogging?

Exposure for vlogs is a problem, and it gets bigger everyday. Those problems are compounded when, in a group about video blogging, asking for people to check out your vlog is spam.

As far as the VLOGGERS UNITE thread, I don't have a problem with it, and don't see it as spam, any more than I see this entire list as spam. I like this group, and have learned tons from it, but there is very little of what I got that I actually ask for. I appreciate the 'spam' on this list. It is some of the finest spam on the internet.

I am not going to join that group, but I don't mind deleting one more of my 230  videoblogging messages in my inbox.

I don't know what to do about the exposure problem, so this is kind of a meta piece, with probably little to no value, but I felt as if I should chime in and speak my mind.

Oh yea, we just signed the paperwork for our new dog training studio, boutique and art gallery.
<snark>I will be posting video soon, and if it is good enough I will 'spam' the group with the info, mainly in the hopes that local vlogging hero Josh Leo will watch it and come out and vlog about it. Then maybe all of you will get a chance to see our new place. </snark>

Got to run. Time for a new coat of paint and to hang some sweet signage.

I just find one thing funny. That posting your posts to a yahoo group

Quite frankly the fastest way to get your pages listed is through
your RSS feed. Specifically if you use feedburner as that no only
indexes your feed and pings all the relevant websites, but also
includes mediaRSS info which is sent straight to yahoo.

Furthermore building an audience of subscribers through actually
offering value not spam is the best possible way to build a long term
repeat audience... focus on promoting subscriptions not just
individual posts. Visitors to your site come and go, subscribers
stick around.

When I heard about this proposed yahoo group I simply heard the term
spam group. By all means though if you want to spam yourself and
others who would spam you go right a head. A giant echo chamber...
people yelling at each other... check out my feed, no check out my
feed. Everyone shouting noone listening. I think it'd be funny. Just
don't do it here.

And btw, for future reference, people don't like being "experimented
with" that definitely does not make it OK. In fact it may offend
people worse than just being clueless, because it's condescending too.

Andrew,

To me, there are some very interesting/amazing things about RocketBoom

1) The amount of viewers/downloads went from nothing to something comparable with pretty sucessful cable TV show in a year or less.
2) It did this with almost none of the overhead associated with "normal" TV or Movies.
3) It did this throgh a distribution channel very different from traditional TV and Video (the internet).
4) Rocketboom has developed advertising methods very unlike things that have come before (having creative control over adds - auctioning on eBay)
5) It appears that you have and are resisting temptations that must have occured to change your methodology to be more traditional.

... to me, the RocketBoom story is a really really interesting one, at least based on these outcomes, and, for me, I'm most interested in, how in the world did it get to be this way? how did you start? what do you do on a daily basis? what sorts of things are you considering in the future? how much was planned/vision, and how much was random? etc...

... the other thing is that, as I understand it, you grew up with this community - the Yahoo vlogging group - even today, you are sending a message to this list to ask us what we are interested in, and you guys still seem to keep up and contribute, despite all you have going ... Michael Verdi was telling me about how he used to edit for RocketBoom for a while at the beginning, and you would move his air matress on your apt floor to make room for the show ... I had not idea about those connections, for example ... what a story

... that's the sort of thing that interests me, the whole rocketboom story and; especially, how it grew and it related to our little community, and I think that would be interesting to our group, and the outside world as well ... anyway, my thoughts ... Richard

I do not personally have a problem with:
* An introduction post the first time someone puts up their videoblog
* A "wow this was tough/fun/interesting" when there's something GENUINELY cool about a recent vlog they posted.
* A post introducing a videoblogging-related product or service. These annoy me if they are the only thing the person posts, however; learn to contribute.

I do have a problem with:
* A post every day or so with the same information posted yesterday. Namely "check out my vlog."  Hey, if we didn't go see it yesterday, what makes you think today is different?
* A post EVERY TIME someone posts a vlog entry. Sorry-- each individual vlog is probably not that unique. Cool and important to you, sure. But not enough to post every time you update. This isn't a notification list.
* People who use this group as an experiment in their marketing plans. I can go on and on about experimentation in marketing, but the fact is, Jason either lied about that, or is a very unethical marketer. I think we know the latter is true, at least. There's a very limited set of cases where it's ethical to experiment on a group without their knowledge or permission. This isn't one of them.
* People who also privately email individual members of the group to ask them why they haven't come to look at their vlogs. From email I have received, Jason may have done this, as well, basically using the videoblogging group as a source for email addresses to follow-up with his marketing garbage.

I do agree that RSS is not a promotional tool per se, in the sense that it doesn't get more people to see your vlog. However, RSS makes it easier to get your vlog into certain search and index sites.

I notice that most of the people who responded with angst in this thread have pretty good name recognition within this community. I am not attacking anyone, but I think that those of you who are established Vloggers don't really see the problems for getting exposure for a new Vlog.

This is very, very true. The "core" vloggers will, whether they like it or not, be seen as "cliqueish" as more videobloggers enter the vlogging world. That's not who they are, and not what they're about-- in fact, it's hard to find a more enthusiastic, engaging, and inclusive group of folks in the high tech world. But the nature of group dynamics is such that this is a nearly-inevitable side effect of becoming "the experts."

Exposure for vlogs is a problem, and it gets bigger everyday. Those problems are compounded when, in a group about video blogging, asking for people to check out your vlog is spam.

It's not spam. It's spam when it's every 12 hours.

See, I don't see this as spammy at all, because you contributed valuable thoughts and perspective to the discussion. There *has* to be a high signal-to-noise ratio on this list, or it will collapse.

In reading about technorati tags, it says that, if you make a category in wordpress that technorati will recogize and categologue that feed.

I created a cateogry for video blog week 2006 and used it for my day before vlog week post.

I actually called the tag video blog week 2006, but for the "slug" I put it all together as one word videoblogweek2006
