There is a fix for this. Look for info on the ATI 1600 video card on
the boxee forums.

The "1000 True Fans" has been posted before, but I think it's worth
reposting.

Many people on this list videoblog for fun.
Others are creatives trying to create for a living (and also possibly for
fun).

This post is advice for amateur filmmakers though is equally as pertinent to
videobloggers.
I'm sure many us us already intuitively understand that the web allows us to
connect directly with the people who watch our work for basically the cost
of our time.
Instead of relying on some invisible executive to "give us the greenlight",
we do what makes sense to us.

Artists starting out in this digitally mediated world have another path

It's all in French, but looks like a similar system.

Ok folks. Santa brought me a 4gig MBP and a copy of FCE 4. I've been using
Premiere Pro 1.5 for the past few years and wanted to switch to something
that can handle HD.

I'm working on a simple sequence using a green screen and some simple
graphics. My problem is in rendering. First, Real Time rendering, even
with the frame rate set low, stops due to dropping frames so it's not
possible to watch the sequence.
If I switch to safe render, nothing shows until the sequence is rendered
which takes 15 minutes for a 2 minute segment! Then, if I make a change, it
wants to render again.

Seeing the number of people on this list with MBPs and using FC Pro, I know
most, if not all, of my problems are settings, or something very simple.
Any ideas on how I can make this a better experience?

Oh. Original footage is from my Canon HV30 shot in HDV mode.

Thanks!
Shel.

The problem is likely the result of your sequence settings not
matching the settings of your captured footage. When footage of type
A is added to a sequence of type B (ie. HDV footage to a DV sequence),
FCE will force you to transcode the footage to type B before playing
back in real-time (in other words, needless rendering).

The easiest way to fix this is: BEFORE you create a new project,
select an Easy Setup (under the Final Cut Pro menu) that matches your
camera.

Now when you create a new project, any sequence you create will have
matching settings to any footage you capture.

If you want to make corrections inside the project you're already
working on, you can usually just right-click on a clip in the browser
and inspect its properties -- vid rate, compressor, dimensions, etc.
And then just change your sequence settings (under the Sequence menu)
to match.

Hope this helps!

Sounds about right, I've been working with FCE4 on a 2GB MBP, and it's been
taking 2
hours to render 8 minutes of footage. It's to be expected. That said, I've been
very happy
with the results!

Rendering drives me nuts on Final Cut. I use footage from multiple
sources and premiere or sony vegas can accept it.
It seems that Final Cut has a closed system, and is designed not to be
able to use imported clips from or to multiple platforms. When are
they going to open up?

Good luck!

Hello all. I am an ex-TV producer who is attempted a foray into your
world. We have just started our first weekly show called "Trip on a
Deal" and would love your input. What do you think? Good content?
Length? Delivery?

You can find the show at triponadeal.com or on most video hosting
sites (blip, youtube, revver, etc). We're still working on the trip
on a deal site ... hope to debut a travel related social network to
surround the show soon. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Smooth playing on Firefox 3 on Vista. Made me want to run away from
home but then I remembered I can't swim.

I think it would be stronger if it was shorter, maybe 1.5 minutes or
just a minute. You have great shots but you don't need to show all of
them, some are repetative.

It will be hard but just pick the ones that are the strongest and I
think you will have it.

Thanks Gena, I kept the best for the DVD. I shot 3 hrs of footage every
day for 10 days, so reviewing and selecting was very time consuming.
Thanks for the comment re running away, I take that meant it looked like
fun, it's a beautiful place.

Cheers Rambo

Smooth playing on Firefox 3 on Vista. Made me want to run away from
home but then I remembered I can't swim.

I think it would be stronger if it was shorter, maybe 1.5 minutes or
just a minute. You have great shots but you don't need to show all of
them, some are repetative.

It will be hard but just pick the ones that are the strongest and I
think you will have it.

"Shoot video throughout a day in your life, then put it together and upload
it the next day. Don't add any music or sound effects, just use what the
camera recorded.
It's easy. DO IT."

I love this kind of simplicity. I'm always surprised how much these mundane
moments show especially as time passes.

Hi, very nice stuff. I thought it was interesting that you mentioned
that you saved the "best stuff" for your DVD. I find that a bit
counter-productive. Assuming the reason you are doing a teaser is to
"tease" people into buying the dvd - then it seems that it would make
more sense to include a few short shots of really really amazing stuff
- not everything but enough to make me want to buy it. I assume that
the people who are speaking - but we don't hear - actually do have
sound in the real deal. That would be really nice to hear too. I
don't really have a sense of what it's going to be like - what will I
get if I buy the DVD? Just hours and hours and hours of people
paddling? In a way it reminded me of a lot of mountain bike videos
and skiing and snowboarding videos. People doing the same thing over
and over and over.....

Having said that, you probably know your crowd a lot better than I do.
It just seemed really long to me, and not very enlightening. Where
are they? What are they doing? What does it take to do it? Why do
people do it? Lots of questions, and I didn't get any sense from the
teaser that I would actually find out any answers if I bought the DVD.

Technically, it was very well shot - looked great! And it played fine
on my Sony Vaio with Vista - in the Chrome browser.

Thanks Milt for your feedback. The intended market for the DVD are the
800+ people that participated in the event, ie the paddlers. Apart
from the racing, there is a lot of cultural footage as the outrigger
canoe is a huge part of the Cook Islands culture and way of life.

Roxanne Darling (from beachwalks fame) who posts here occasionally, is
an outrigger paddler. It would be interesting to compare her feedback
to those of non paddlers.

Thanks again for your comments Milt, taken on board.

If anyone is interested in the purpose built stabilizing Fig Rig that
was made to shoot this footage you can see it here.

A similar project that I do with students are 'sample movies'. the
idea is that a film/video camera (and/or sound recorder) are sampling
machines (eg 25 fps) so we make this literal. You use your video
camera and you then sample for a similarly defined interval. eg 5
seconds every 5 minutes for an hour. Sometimes the hour is nominated
(eg from 5pm), sometimes not. There is no editing, no additional
soundtrack. Some of the works are beautiful, some mundane. But it is a
good exercise to get them to think about simple content, simple rules
for the generation of content, and how to frame/compose the everyday
so that it looks decent.
