Hello,

This player looks very promising:

http://jilion.com/sublime/video

It doesnt work in firefox yet, and the fullscreen mode only works in very recent
webkit nightly build, but the potential is there, the animations are nice, and
performance seems good.

As for the ogg theora issue, having spoken to a few people elsewhere on the web
I still feel it is far more likely that firefox will be forced to try and get
h.264 working by relying on the operating systems ability to play h264, than
stay with ogg only and run the risk of losing browser market share. There is a
lot of heat on the net about these issues but it isnt translating into anything
that makes ogg more viable, at least not at this stage.

Cheers

You're welcome Carlos,

If you are in NYC, I suggest you pay a visit to Sam Ash store in Times Square. I
had an XLR to 1/8" cable custom-made there using the highest quality cabling and
plug. They solder the whole thing in front of you to your own cable length
spects. One caveat though, when they first soldered it I discovered that the
mike started playing only one channel (either left or right, i forget). So I
went back and asked to to wire the cable so that both channels go into the
camcorder. After some experimenting we achieved it.

cheers

Hello,

Ok, so quick update about my sound issues I've been asking you about last week.
I got an Olympus LS10 to check if there's camera making the hum noise or the
environment. What a relief..it was that specific environment that I was filming
in. I tested both my mics (Azden and Rode) on Olympus and there was none to
minimal hum noise, which is natural in my home (or any house). The same is

So..now that I edited the video and uploaded to the Youtube I'm experiencing
some sort of video behind the sound issue. The raw compressed file is looking
good, but when I upload it to Youtube, the visual goes faster than the sound. Is
it just me or Youtube doing smth wrong today? Have you had any issues like that?
I did fix the raw sound to reduce the hum. Could that be doing smth to the video
on Youtube?

I haven't looked into other forums yet since I just posted the video. But I'll
check other forums tonight to see if there are any people who had experience
with this issue.

Thanks.

I just tried it via @Gruber... it brought tears to my eyes. Finally,
web videos that don't feel bootstrapped to the page... it flows so
naturally. I hope this is the future we agree on.

Here's what Gruber had to say about it:
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/02/01/sublimevideo

-----
SublimeVideo — HTML5 Video Player

This is so fucking great: an HTML5 video player by Jilian with
beautiful playback controls, click-to-play control over automatic
buffering, full-window playback with gorgeous animated transitions,
and more. Works great in Safari and Chrome; Firefox support is in the
works. Oh, and if you’re using a WebKit Nightly build: full-screen
playback. Seriously, this is the real deal — full-screen H.264
playback with no Flash, no browser plugins, and sane CPU usage.

When I wrote this piece on HTML5 and auto-buffering last month, I was
focused only on the built-in browser controls. SublimeVideo shows that
I was wrong — the existing browser support is probably good enough, it
just needs to be supplemented with JavaScript to exert necessary
control over buffering and more attractive playback controls.

It'd be helpful if you send a link to the Youtube video so we can see
it. Also be good to know how you compressed the video and fixed the
sound.

I use H264, picture 1280x720, audio AAC (44.1 samplerate, 96 bitrate). I cleaned
the sound with Audacity and then added some bass, just to diminish the
background noise.

I can't upload the video since it's for my client and I would hate for it to go
public before he sees it. But I've used same settings on all my video uploads
for Youtube and never experienced any problems. And the video and sound quality
were very good when uploaded. This is the first one I have this type of issue
with. I found in one forum a discussion about voice delay, but no solution was
suggested.

Thanks.

Give it a few hours - try again. Chances are it'll pass. In the
meantime, try exporting and uploading a different version - use an
Apple iPod setting as an easy option. And also export a 10 second
clip from your video and upload to see if the same thing's happening.

I was seeing a litle jittery spot in the area where the control panel

Apart from that - looks good. I'm sure JW isn't sitting on his hands!

Rupert, it's a good idea- I'll try a shorter clip from the same video to see
what happens. I've been uploading different versions throughout the day and
different sizes (10 mb, 7 mb), it's still the same. Will wait and see.

Thanks.

Hi all,
I got question. Just started a new WGBH Lab open call inspired by The Diary of
Anne Frank. For this call for entries, we are asking for video diary entries,
hence the connection to Anne Fank

It's targeted to youth media makers 13 and up so I started a section called
"video to inspire"...basically it's section for me share example videos of what
we might be looking for but also so show methods that kids might be able to
express themselves via video.

can you all suggest some good examples out the video blogging community that I
could link to or embed?

Let me know.

I would recommend some of my own stuff:
http://twittervlog.tv/popular-videos/
but i fear the language may be a little rich for 13 year olds.

Ze Frank's The Show is a good place to start. Very creative to-camera
videoblogging - it ran from 2006-7.

He defined the style that you can see a lot of on YouTube now - with
fake video diaries like Fred
http://www.youtube.com/user/Fred

and videobloggers you see popping up in the Most Viewed section on
YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/videos

From this list, Mike Moon does a great regular video diary at the
moment:
http://vlog.mikemoon.net

People like Ryanne Hodson and Michael Verdi did awesome video diary
work from 2004-6.

I'll let others jump in with specific examples of videos because I
suddenly have to run to take my daughter to school!

Now I'm back, I'll briefly add... most video diaries are not the
classic to-camera video diaries that you see characters on TV shows &
films doing - those that are to-camera tend to be somewhere between
being editorial opinions and stand up comedy. Personal video diaries
online have tended to be more like classic home movies - people
pointing the camera away from them, videoing the people and things
around them, and then cutting them into simple sequences. Like Jay's
video of his mother's last days, posted in November:
http://momentshowing.net/2009/11/video-sure/

One of my favourite types of video diary has been the videoblog
travelogue as mastered by Ryanne & Jay - just filming moments without
commentary or music and stitching them together - the natural sounds
forming a rhythm:
http://tinyurl.com/ryanne

I have taught videoblogging to teenagers, and most of them were quite
bored by videoblogs and video diaries - even those that I thought were
amazing or funny. I figured that this was because most video diaries
and blogs are by adults, about adult lives. This is one of the
reasons Anne Frank is so accessible to young people - she's young.
And one of the reasons why the nightmarish fake video diary of Fred,
which I linked to before, has been so phenomenally popular - he's a
kid. Ditto the other fictional phenomenon, LonelyGirl15...

got it. I'm hoping that they won't do just the direct to camera stuff.. i could
see this being an opportunity for kids to recite poetry/slams, present
animations or still photography they have done. My hope is that I can find
posting/vlogs, vid diaries that will inspire them to think different about the
presentation.

Ryanne and Jay our my dogs so yeah, I'll grab some of their stuff to show as an
example. Do you remember the vlogger who did Pouring Down TV? Is he still
around? His blog was always out the box inspirational stuff. Love his work. I
think it was pourindown.tv.
Let m know if you think of anymore

best,

Steve of Elbows has mentioned this day several times. H264 will now

read: they're trying to make sure H264 is the video standard online...then
they can charge out the wazoo.

Hey Miguel...I notice no one has answered this message yet. Might be
better to post on <vlogeurope@yahoogroups.com>. Not sure how many US
citizens can afford to travel overseas right now. Tough financial
times and an uncertain future. Not sure what the atmosphere is like in
Europe.

But I love the idea of an event in Portugal.

Hey all

Long time no see!

A buddy is asking about low light xacti cameras. I have gone through a
couple models through the years, and I wouldnt say any of them were all that
good in low light. (he needs it for club/band shows)

If not an xacti, do you have another little flash based cam you can
recommend?

thanks in advance!

for low light, sanyo usually fails.
however they can take decent footage in clubs/bars etc to shoot bands.
here is an example from my HD700 that i had uploaded to facebook a while
back:

crazy facebook url! but it worked!

Sent it to my buddy, thanks Sull. And the footage looks better than on my
xacti (forget what I have as its not with me at the moment)

Anyone else have thoughts on this? Does not have to be about sanyos
specifically; just cheap(er) flash-based cameras.

thanks again!

Hey Miguel - great to hear from you. I would love to be there and if the
dates are set far enough out I will absolutely try to do what I can to be
there. Best vlogeuropes thus far have been where a constant meeting space
is available. Our vlogeurope in Budapest was great because we rented out a
30 bed hostel. this gave us a great place to meet up and for most of a
place to stay. I will contribute some funds to make that happen if you do
the ground work on finding a space. Just needs to have internet and maybe a
wall to project some videos on... best is close to where things are
happening.

Supposedly the Sony EXMOR CMOS chip excels in low light -
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/technology/technology/theme/cmos_01.html

and it's now on some of the cheaper cams..

Hello V-group,

Anyone have experience with video chat? How about Skype with a Mac?
I've held off with Skype because some say there are issues w/Mac's.
Any advice on this topic would be welcome.

I've been using an Xacti HD2 for the past couple years as my main video unit. It
does 'okay' in normal mode, but it has a big button, when pressed, turns on the
High Sensitivity Mode. Other Xacti' I've owned didn't have that feature.
http://blip.tv/file/get/MMMMMoon-CalledMySister216.mov
This clip was shot in our Cabana; basically a shed in the back where we
celebrate being Canadian.
Anyhow, the Cabana in this clip is lite with a couple candles and string of LED
white-blueish lights. There is not enough light to read with. I figured the
lighting might be comparable to scenes your buddy would be shooting.
Anyhow, it's an older model Xacti, has a mic-in and shoots up to HD 720p.

Tom,

I've used video on my Mac with skype for a long time - no issue provided you
have decent bandwidth. When I talk with my wife who travels a lot sometimes her
hotel connection (lower bandwidth) can cause issues but typical company and home
Internet setups are great.

Get a good usb mic or headset with DSP that improves audio and your caller will
remark on how present you sound. The built in webcams on macs work great but you
can also hook some camcorders up as web cams (either Firewire units) or USB
camcorders with free software drivers like Macam.
