Unfortunately, the only option is commercial use. Maybe if enough
people write, they'll
offer a non-commercial option.

Very true. I know the head lawywe for Creative Commons was hired by
google a couple years ago. I assume its small steps. Its pretty big
news that Youtube is even offering any choice at all for CC. Remember
that what this does is educate people on a different avenue other than
the traditional, but broken, copyright system. People should
definitely keep pushing.

The reason YT is doing this is because their lawyers define the YT site as
"commercial"
so they are saying the videos all have to be commercial CC licenses because YT
is showing them
commercially.

That's different than Flickr, which says the video or photo can be shown at
Flickr and it's okay
if it's licensed to the rest of the world as NC.. because the agreement is that
Flickr can use
and show them regardless... Flickr shares videos and photos through their API
and through framing/embedding.. so you can embed the video or photo elsewhere..
but you can only
do that if the user chooses the NC SA license. If the user chooses NC, Flickr
won't even share
a photo link through search or discovery (like a tags list) outside their own
site.

YT is different. They say you don't have to share the video outside (embedding
rights)... so no SA requirement.. but you
do have to allow for Commercial use.. because YT is a commercial site.

They probably feel they are being more consistent than if they went with
Flickr's interpretation and use of the CC rules.

Point taken on commercial Mary. And SA would confuse the issue and limit the
creativity of remixers to use all kinds of other restricted material
including their own copyrighted stuff. OTOH the whole point of SA and why
it's a pillar of the the free culture community is that every use aggregates
more into the common pool.

Joly..

I get that YT could be doing this better and they should.. but 6 years ago I
talked to Steve Chen
about it.. and they weren't really interested in adding CC licenses to YT.. so
should we be grateful
now that all these years later they are?

I think they are way behind the curve...

A company approached me about teaching an online video workshop in
NYC. This isnt something we do these days...but anyone here in NYC
feel like teaching? Sounds like they want 10 people how to learn the
art of recording short stories using the Flip or other small camera.

Email me directly if interested; jay.dedman@...

Hi Folks,

I'm wondering what the current thinking is on a cheap HD setup for online
video (talking head YouTube stuff)?

My considerations are:

    - Price
    - Ease of use
    - Native mpg4 h.264

When I last looked the most popular option was the Kodak Zi8 if not an
iPhone 4 or similarly equipped Android device. HD webcams are getting
better.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Julian I still use the Zi8 and bought a $20 lapel mic. Now if I could get a

Hey folks,

I just got invited to a Twitter community called Triberr, and just set up a
group called "Vlog House." Basically the community allows members to see and
retweet each others vlog posts via rss. I'm trying to build the tribe and would
love to have some vloggers here join in.

Hi Everyone,

I recently bought a Canon Vixia HF R20 for about $350 at Sam's Club and I'm
thrilled with the quality of the recording. I had been using an Everio that was
giving me increasingly scrambled images (sort of pixellated) and it was too
frustrating for words.

This camera only has a 8GB internal memory, but it has 2 card slots so I will
probably be buying cards for it soon. Recording at full HD takes a lot of
memory. If anyone has advice on SD cards, I'd love to hear it.

I am upgrading my Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 10 to 11, after reading the
reviews on Amazon about version 12 (lots of bad reviews).

I recently rendered a 1 hour video for upload to YouTube and it took every
resource that my poor old laptop had just to render. I had to upload from
another computer and it took 40 hours to upload the 8GB file.

I cleaned up my desktop and laptop and put all video clips on an external hard
drive (did this about a year ago) and I find it's much easier now to stay
organized.

Well, I just wanted to share how happy I am with this new Canon. I hope
everyone's having a great summer :)

REad your camera's manual to see if it needs a certain kind of SD. We
just bought the biggest cards we could afford. 32GB.

Did you upload a 8GB file to youtube? I know they say to upload your
best quality, but thats extreme. An hour shouldnt be any more than iGB
even at 1080i.

Yes, I did upload an 8GB file, mostly because I have no idea what I am doing. I
rendered using Vegas presets for HD output, to MP2, and that's what I ended up
with. It may that big also because of some of the file sizes of photos that are
included in the video. I'm learning as I go :)

Thanks,
Marguerita

Its not a mistake, especially if Youtube accepted. Usually you want to
try to convert to an MP4. Im sure theres a tutorial on youtube showing
you how to do this our of Vegas. Transcoding has always been a dark
art.

Hi bes way is to use mpegstreamclip to open your file and then convert it to mp4
(check on vimeo website, they give all the useful and simple information).

Hey folks. Over the last few weeks, I can't access my admin or upload new videos
to to my Wordpress site.
http://MikeMoon.ca

I know this isn't a Wordpress help site, but you have all been so helpful over
the years, I'll ask for help here first.

I post my vlogs to my Wordpress based site.
I have access through FTP and the site looks okay, but the last few posts
haven't shown up and when I try and access the sites dashboard via admin, I get:

Error 500 - Internal server error
An internal server error has occured!
Please try again later.

When I post a video through Blip that reposts on my site, it says:

Error encountered cross-posting: Fatal client error. 500 Internal Server Error
at /var/www/otter/current/bin/../lib/Net/Blogger/Engine/Base.pm line 245.

I haven't added any new widgets or stuff on my site.
So how can I gain access to the site to make changes or fix it?
I have ftp access to the site.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have upwards of a 1000 entries and 5+
years of comments I'd rather not lose.

Hey Mike,

You didn't mention if you already contacted your host, but that's where I would
start. It sounds like some permissions may be screwy on your server.

Also, if I were you, as a precaution you should change your hosting account/FTP
password to something STRONG. Just in case someone gained access and inserted a
script into a theme or plugin somewhere.

Sincerely,

Adam W. Warner

Thank You Adam.

I contacted 1and1 and they said that the error was caused by my server being
PHP4 and they upgraded my site to PHP5 and now I have access.

My password currently is a combination of alpha and numerical characters, but
it's never a bad time to change it.

Thank you!

Mike

I'd also make sure you;re getting weekly or monthly backups of your
database and storing them somewhere safe. There's a wordpress plugin
that emails you a backup at the timeframe you choose.

hi all

quick question. Someone wants to record video directly from camera into
iMovie. I know you can do this via built in camera, I'm pretty sure you can
do this via FireWire (but there seem to be no low end camera's that come
with firewire anymore), can you capture directly (live) via USB 2 into
iMovie? Have had a look around but have failed to find a reliable answer...

help and collective wisdom appreciated.
