Subject: Vim7aa GUI bug
c.d.allen@...
Send Email Send Email

There appears to be a non-fatal bug in the OS X gui for Vim7aa from
today's CVS. Starting Vim, going to any menu and *not* selecting an
item, and then dragging in the main Vim window generates
some (two or three) messages:

E341: Internal error: lalloc(0, )
E341: Internal error: lalloc(0, )
E341: Internal error: lalloc(0, )

If anyone wants more details on it than that, I can probably provide
it, but I suspect this is probably an easy one if you know your way
around the OS X GUI code.

Thanks,
Chris Allen

I took down the latest code, built it and was not able to reproduce
the bug following the instructions.. Maybe I did something
differently than you or there is something different in our builds :)

Could you please provide a bit more detailed description that would
include how you started vim and how exactly you do the dragging.

Yours,
Jussi

Whoops, original message ran afoul of the message size limit. If
anyone wants the bugreport.txt file, let me know. I've removed it

Bah, always the easy ones that are hard ;)

Right, after extensive gvim -Uing and vimrc file commenting, I have
tracked it down to the guioptions+=a setting and the splash screen
showing. The exact sequence of actions needed to reproduce it is to
start a graphical copy of Vim by any manner which leaves the splash
screen showing (no files, no startup commands outside a vimrc), and
then click and drag within the text area which is showing the splash
screen.

The original report involving menu items was a red herring, it has
nothing to do with the menus, but does appear to have something to do
with whether there is a file present or just the splash screen. As
far as I can tell, even a message showing upon start up will cause
things to work properly.

Lest this not be so simple as I thought, I've attached a
$VIMRUNTIME/bugreport.vim report, so that exact build options can be
tested if needed.

Thanks,
Chris Allen

Well, now when I rebuilt my vim with --with-features=huge set I can
see the bug. I'll try to look into it and I'll report if I can
understand what's going on.

Greetings,
Jussi

I've built the latest Vim 7 alpha under Mac OS X. It looks goodthe
spell-checking in particular is pretty neat. However, there doesn't
appear to be support for anti-aliased text, nor for styled (bolded,
italicized, underlined) text. Is it just me that's having this
problem? If not, any idea when support for these will be added? It's
mainly cosmetic and not a big deal, but the non-antialiased text /is/
pretty ugly :-)

I was wondering if anyone has made headway with associating Vim as the
default application for particular file types. I tried following the
advice of an earlier thread on the subject (back in May), but to no
avail. Any attempt to associate Vim with a given file time simply
snaps back to the original file application in the info panel for that
file. So far, no tinkering with Info.plist has improved the situation.

Any recommendations most welcome.

Thanks,
Chris

Using Tiger? It's a bug, but I don't remember where I read about it.

I'm not sure how it was implemented - but the GUI version of Vim 6.3 works
nicely when you use Apple-C Apple-V to copy and paste in text from another
application. In a terminal you have to use :paste, but in the GUI it even
handles pre-indented text properly.
7aa on the other hand does not - you get one long line with ^M
untranslated, and I think (I'm not in front of it) it doesn't enter Insert
mode correctly either. I'm using the same .vimrc and .gvimrc for both.
Is this a build time option? or ?

Copying this info.plist:
http://www.brownhat.org/rlieh/Info.plist
over the one available in the Vim.app bundle should solve the problem.

Vim is not setting the CFBundleIdentifier field, causing Tiger to
forget its existence.

Bye.

Daniele,

just to make sure, you're suggesting to copy this file to the
installed vim's Vim.app/Contents/, right? Not only it doesn't work
for me: I cannot assign all ".txt" files to Vim (though it shows up
as a recommended application now) using Info: Change all in the
Finder; Vim also never gets to the foreground when started from mutt
with the exec switch, and doesn't seem to take clicks in the
background either.

I strongly suggest to make a backup copy of your Info.plist before
trying.

Yes, to confirm this certainly does not work, at least for vim 6.3 on
Tiger. All files assigned to vim immediately snap back to the original
application after clicking on "change all". Thanks for the advice
though.

I have uploaded a new Info.plist on the same place as before (http://
www.brownhat.org/rlieh/Info.plist), but the only thing I changed was
the icon name. That file is working for me, and I tried again to
conform that.

Did you rebuild the LaunchServices database by doing:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/
Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/
lsregister -r -v -f /Applications/Vim.app

I forgot to mention this in the previous mail, but it is quite an
important thing to make OsX aware that something changed.

Bye.
