Subject: Vim patches and lack of food
Bram@...

Greetings, Vim users.

You may have noticed patches for Vim 7 appear at a slow pace. I
currently have limited time to work on Vim. And my internet connection
isn't 100% reliable, and SourceForge was down for a day, and [insert
your favorite excuse here]...

On the positive side: I found a nice apartment in Zurich. Once I have
moved in there and have a proper internet connection again I'll try to
work away the most important items in the todo list. First the ones for
which I have received a patch (hint!).

While we are enjoying unusually sunny weather here in western Europe,
children in Uganda are suffering from an unusual drought. Especially in
the area around Kibaale the situation is really bad. Planted crops
withered and died. It has not been this bad since 1992.

Kibaale Childrens Centre (KCC), the charity supported by Vim, has
started food assistance to over 400 families. This has helped them
through the most difficult period. However, we expect the families to
run out of food again after August, by the end of the dry season. We
need to prepare to help the children and their families again.

For more background information read about the famine relief program:

Greetings, Vim users.

I am hosting a Vim BOF at the upcoming O'Reilly Open Source Convention:

       Title: Vim 8?
        Date: Tuesday, 19 September 2006
        Time: 20:30 - 21:30
    Location: Salon Versailles

Summary: Vim 7 was released May 2006. Does it make sense to make
another major release and add lots of new features? Or
should priority be given to fix problems and fine tune
              existing features?

What new features would users really profit from? Talk
about the pros and cons with the main Vim author.

The conference is held in Brussels, 18 - 21 September.

Greetings, Vim users.

If you don't care about helping needy children in Uganda, which is Vim's
charity, then skip this message.

As mentioned before, the area of Kibaale has been suffering from a
drought for several months now. Here is an update from Jackie Ammeter
that I received today:

The famine and drought continue to worsen. Yes, we have been getting a
bit of rain, but a shower once a week is far from adequate. We should be
getting 2 or 3 hours of rain every other day for two months straight in
order to bring everything back to life. People are actually beginning to
die of hunger.

Everyday we are having hungry and needy people coming for help. I can't
really describe the difficulty of the situation. On Monday, about 20
people came to the community development office pleading for help.
Justine came and told me about the most heart-wrenching case of the day:
a 10 year old girl came asking for food for herself and for her siblings
aged 8, 6, and 4 whom she was looking after. Their parents had died and
they were living with a grandmother who was currently in the hospital.
They hadn't eaten in 3 or 4 days. Justine said the girl was just
shaking.

We also had a grandfather who was caring for a baby grandchild. He had
no milk to give the baby. We gave him 6,000 (about $4) to buy milk for
one month. The needs are endless and people are now saying the crisis
far surpasses that of 1992.

Dear Vim users,

The traditional Vim calendar has been updated for 2007!

This is a desktop calendar for 2007, made from one sheet of paper.
After folding, one side contains a useful 12-month calendar.
On the other side there is brief information about ICCF-Holland,
Vim and A-A-P.

	 English, A4: http://www.moolenaar.net/2007_en_a4.pdf
	 English, Letter: http://www.moolenaar.net/2007_en_le.pdf
	 Dutch, A4: http://www.moolenaar.net/2007_nl_a4.pdf

Each file is in PDF and about 180 Kbyte.

I'm afraid the problem with scripts on www.vim.org has not been solved
yet. We are waiting for SourceForge support...

Happy holidays!

Dear Vim users,

A week ago I did a presentation on Vim, called "Seven habits of
effective text editing 2.0". I was happy to see a lot of people
come to listen to me. Many more than expected, we ran out of food and
had to get extra chairs. Thanks to all who were there, it was nice to
have a big audience. And I was excited to greet some of the people who
I previously only knew through e-mail.

The video of the presentation is now available on Google video:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2538831956647446078

The presentation itself is about 45 minutes. With the Q&A included it
is 80 minutes.

If you can't use Google video, you may get the video file from the ftp
server: ftp://ftp.vim.org/pub/vim/stuff/7Habits20.avi
This is 507 Mbyte of divx. You may want to use a mirror site:
ftp://ftp.vim.org/pub/vim/MIRRORS

It's a lot quicker to get the PDF with the presentation and notes:
http://www.moolenaar.net/habits.pdf
This is about 640 Kbyte.

Greetings, Vim users!

The ICCF Holland foundation is Vim's charity. Vim users are asked to
consider helping needy children in Kibaale, Uganda. Since April 2006
the Vim sponsorship and registration is also destined for this project.

The financial report for 2006 is now available. You can find it here:
	 http://iccf-holland.org/jaar2006.pdf

There is also a Dutch version:
	 http://iccf-holland.org/jaar2006n.pdf

I'm glad to report that the total revenue has increased by 25%. Mainly
because of Vim sponsorship. Thanks to all the people who donated!

I hope to visit the project before the summer and report how the money
is being used.

Greetings, Vim users!

Vim sponsors and registered Vim users can vote for features. The result
can be seen here: http://www.vim.org/sponsor/vote_results.php

Vim 7.0 has added a number of features that still appeared in the voting
list. I have now updated the list to reflect the Vim 7.0 features.

Removed features:
- add tabbed windows
- add undo tree (be able to go back to any previous situation)
- add a ":grep" command that does not use an external command
- add option to highlight the screen line (and column) of the cursor

Changed features:
- "add intelligent completion"
-> "add more and better omni completion plugins"
- "add more features to Vim scripting (arrays, lists, sorting, etc.)"
-> "add more features to Vim scripting"
- "add more autocommand events (for ":cd", start Insert mode, etc.)"
-> "add more autocommand events (for ":cd", jump to tag, etc.)"
- "add on-the-fly spell checking"
   -> "improve on-the-fly spell checking"

If you voted for one of these, please go to the voting pages and adjust
your votes: http://www.vim.org/sponsor/vote.php You need to login.

Instead of doing a boring holiday job, students can work on Vim this
summer. Google sponsors the work.

Ideas for what could be worked on can be found on the ideas page:
http://www.vim.org/soc/ideas.php

But you can also come up with your own task. Keep in mind that the
number of students that will be accepted is limited, thus write a good

Students should plan to submit their applications by March 24, 2007.

Announcing: Vim (Vi IMproved) version 7.1a BETA

This is a BETA release of Vim 7.1. It consists of Vim 7.0 plus all
patches and updated runtime files.

I expect this to be stable, since the patches have been used by many
people already. This BETA is mainly to check that the files has been
setup properly. It's been almost a year since the last one!

Please report every problem you find! It will only be a few days until
the 7.1 release, so please take a little time right now to check it out.

Once you have installed Vim 7.1a BETA you can find details about the
changes since Vim 7.0 with ":help version-7.1".

Testing
-------

This is a BETA test version. Please give it a good test and report
anything that isn't right. That includes a crash but also a typo in the
documentation.

I will not make an Amiga or OS/2 binary for Vim 7.1a. A Mac version is
hopefully available soon on http://macvim.org/

Before you ask a question you should search the archives, someone may
already have given the answer.

Reporting bugs
--------------

Send them to <bugs@...>. Please describe the problem precisely.
All the time spent on answering mail is subtracted from the time that is
spent on improving Vim! Always give a reproducible example and try to
find out which settings or other things influence the appearance of the
bug. Try starting without your own vimrc file: "vim -u NONE". Try
different machines if possible. See ":help bugs" in Vim. Send me a
patch if you can!

If something needs discussing with other developers, send a message to the
vim-dev mailing list. You need to subscribe first.

Announcing: Vim (Vi IMproved) version 7.1b BETA

This is a BETA release of Vim 7.1. It consists of Vim 7.0 plus all
patches, updated runtime files and a few fixes.

If you were using 7.1a please upgrade to 7.1b and verify it works well.
Please report every problem you find! It will only be a couple of days
until the 7.1 release, so hurry.

Once you have installed Vim 7.1b BETA you can find details about the
changes since Vim 7.0 with ":help version-7.1".

Changes since 7.1a:

- Lots of spelling mistakes fixed.
- Several runtime files updated. Somehow people tend to send me updates
   _after_ doing a release...
- Bug in downloading a missing spell file fixed. Could wipe out a
buffer with your text when downloading failed.
- Building with MingW fixed (and now Win32s version also builds).
- Editing compressed files didn't work when folding enabled.

Testing
-------

This is a BETA test version. Please give it a good test and report
anything that isn't right. That includes a crash but also a typo in the
documentation.

I will not make an Amiga or OS/2 binary for Vim 7.1b. A Mac version is
hopefully available soon on http://macvim.org/

Where to get it
---------------

All files can be found below this directory:
         ftp://ftp.vim.org/pub/vim/unstable/

Information about which files to download for what system (don't use the
links, they are still for Vim 7.0):

Announcing: Vim (Vi IMproved) version 7.1

This is a stable release of Vim, version 7.1. Since version 7.0 lots of
problems were fixed and runtime files were updated. It has been one
year and five days since 7.0!

Most of Vim 7.1 was already available as patches for quite a while. A
couple of test versions were made to spot problems in the distribution.
Therefore Vim 7.1 can be considered very stable.

If you are using an older version, it is highly recommended you install
Vim 7.1. Several crashing bugs and a security issue were fixed.

Once you have installed Vim 7.1 you can find details about the
changes since Vim 7.0 with ":help version-7.1".

You may have noticed that the Vim maillist server has died. It was an
old machine. A big thanks to the people in Berlin for keeping it alive
for such a long time!

The situation with our own maillist server was OK, but when the
maintainer is on a holiday it may take quite a long time before a
problem gets fixed. Or we lose contact with the maintainer for unknown
reasons (which is what happened last week with a potential new server).
Several people suggested using Google Groups. We have tried it out for
a few days with the vim-experiment group. It mostly works well.
Although it is not perfect I have decided to move everything there now.

You are getting this message because you were subscribed to one of the
maillists in the past. The subscriber lists are NOT transferred to the
new groups (1). If you want to continue getting messages about Vim you
need to subscribe.

IF YOU DO NOTHING, THIS IS THE LAST MESSAGE YOU WILL GET!

To subscribe, send a message to the <name>-subscribe@... list. You
will get a message back that you need to reply to before you are
actually subscribed. NOTE: clicking on the URL in the message may not
work.

These are the subscription addresses:

vim-announce-subscribe@... important announcements only
vim-subscribe@... using Vim
vim-dev-subscribe@... developing Vim
vim-mac-subscribe@... Vim on the Mac
vim-multibyte-subscribe@... multi-byte issues

Note that, like before, you need to be subscribed to be able to post a
message. Thus make sure you subscribe from the same account you would
normally send a message to a Vim list from.

For more information visit: http://www.vim.org/maillist.php
You can set your subscription to be in digest form on the Google Groups
webpage. I haven't seen a method using e-mail only yet.

After a few days the vim-experiment list will be removed, please stop
using it.

I'm trying to add the Yahoo groups as a subscriber, so that we have a
complete archive there (well, for as far as Yahoo didn't delete messages
for quota reasons). Didn't work yet.

(1) I have tried to use the "add subscribers" feature of Google Groups,
but they have several mechanisms to protect from spammers misusing
this. I have sent in a few lists, some people may be automatically
subscribed. But it was too cumbersome to do it for everybody.

As you are reading this it means the maillists are working for you
again. Unless you were expecting an e-mail and have to read it online.
Apparently there are still a few people who do not receive messages by
e-mail. This appears to be a random effect. If it happens for you, try
unsubscribing and subscribing again.

I'll keep the vim-experiment list for a few more days. Use this list
for experimenting with your Google Groups subscription. Please avoid
doing this on the real lists, hundreds of people will get your "just
testing, please ignore" message. If you want to test if you can send a
message, write something useful! :-)

Subject: Problems with Vim lists on Google Groups
Bram@...
Send Email Send Email

Hello Vim users,

A few weeks ago the Vim maillists were moved to the Google Groups
system. For most people this worked well, but some experienced problems
receiving and posting messages. That means one is successfully
subscribed, but messages are not received and posting is not allowed.

It took a while to figure out what went wrong. It turned out that it
was caused by a denied mass-subscribe request. At first I had tried to
automatically subscribe the subscribers of the old maillists at Google
Groups. The requests that were denied have resulted in a special flag
for the e-mail addresses in these lists. That caused the problems.

I have sent this message to the people in the denied requests, but
I got quite a few bounces. Thus I'm repeating the message here for
others that appear to be in this situation.

If you have the problems described, you can do one of these:
- Subscribe with another e-mail address.
- Some people reported that it started working after creating a Google
   account.
- Contact Groups support at this URL:
   http://groups.google.com/support/bin/request.py

I'm very sorry we caused these problems and it took so long to figure
out what went wrong.

Subject: Searching for Vim scripts
Bram@...
Send Email Send Email

Hello Vim users,

So far we only had the possibility to search for scripts on the Vim
website. Of course you could use your favorite search engine, but then
you would find any type of file, not just Vim scripts.

I have now added a search box to the search page on www.vim.org where
you can specifically search for Vim scripts, anywhere on the internet.
This uses Google Code Search. It not only finds individual "*.vim"
files but also scripts inside archives. E.g., in the Vim distribution.

There is one extra special thing: You search with a regexp pattern.
Thus what you type in the search box are not keywords, it is different
from a normal Google search. For example, you can search for
"python.*indent" and find matches in "Python indent", "GetPythonIndent"
and "python_highlight_indent_errors". The regexp synax used is Posix,
it's different from Vim regexp.

Try it out on the Vim search page (second box from the top):
        http://www.vim.org/search.php

Hello Vim users,

I have added two items to vote on:

- add collaborative editing: changes made to a file show up in another
   Vim in a second
- add flexible tab stops, can be used for tables

Registered users and sponsors can change their votes. See this page for
info: http://www.vim.org/sponsor/index.php
Note that I'm very busy, I have little time for new features at the
moment. I can't make promises about when a new feature will be added.

I'm glad to report that in 2007 I have received a total of 9000 euro.
All this money has been sent to Uganda, to help the children in Kibaale.
Thanks to all the Vim supporters!

The project is doing well. We expect to have 766 children in nursery,
primary and secondary school when the it starts again in a couple of
weeks. More children are studying in other schools.

One of the big projects for 2008 is building a new clinic. The number
of patients has been increasing steadily, the current building is worn
out and too small. The plans have been approved, the builders are
expected to start next month.

Hello Vim users,

In case you were wondering what's with all these patches: I'm planning
to make a Vim 7.2 release soon. This will be a minor release that
includes all the patches and updated runtime files. I do have a few
things that I like to finish, such as the floating point patch. We
should also do a short beta test. So it will still take several weeks.

In Kibaale they are working on clinic 2.0. It's really a major release,
it will be a big improvement for the poor people living in and around
Kibaale. I have created a page with information:

	 http://iccf-holland.org/clinic.html

The building is almost finished, but we still need funds for furniture
and equipment. Please consider making a donation.

The Kibaale Children's Centre is Vim's charity project. If you use Vim
and you like it, please consider showing your gratitude by helping them.

Hello Vim users,

Announcing: Vim (Vi IMproved) version 7.2a BETA

This is a BETA release of Vim 7.2. It consists of Vim 7.1 plus all
patches, updated runtime files and some more.

I expect this to be reasonable stable, since most of the patches have
been used by many people already. However, I did include several
patches the last few days, this might break something.

Please report every problem you find! The time until a 7.2 release
depends on how many problems are reported.

The biggest addition is floating support. Once you have installed Vim
7.2a BETA you can find details about the changes since Vim 7.1 with
":help version-7.2".

Testing
-------

This is a BETA test version. Please give it a good test and report
anything that isn't right. That includes a crash but also a typo in the
documentation.

I will not make an Amiga or OS/2 binary for Vim 7.2a. A Mac version is
hopefully available soon on http://macvim.org/ and/or from the MacVim
project at http://code.google.com/p/macvim/

Gratitude
---------

If you like Vim, this is the way to say thanks:

Hello Vim users,

Announcing: Vim (Vi IMproved) version 7.2

This is a minor release of Vim. In the 15 months since Vim 7.1 many
bugs were fixed and runtime files have been added and updated. There
are also security improvements, therefore it's a good idea to upgrade.

The main new feature since 7.1 is floating point support. You can use
it in the Vim script language to add up a list of amounts, for example.

Once you have installed Vim 7.2 you can find details about the changes
since Vim 7.1 with ":help version-7.2".

Notes
-----

The new O'Reilly book "Learning the Vi and Vim editors" is now
available. See http://iccf-holland.org/click5.html

I will not make an Amiga or OS/2 binary for Vim 7.2. A Mac version is
hopefully available soon on http://macvim.org/ and/or from the MacVim
project at http://code.google.com/p/macvim/
A Win64 binary should be available soon at
http://code.google.com/p/vim-win3264/

There is no 16-bit DOS version, the executable is too big to fit in the
limited memory space.

Hello Vim users,

The usual Vim desktop calendar is now available for download and
printing:

English - A4 : http://www.moolenaar.net/2009_en_a4.pdf
English - Letter: http://www.moolenaar.net/2009_en_le.pdf
Dutch - A4: http://www.moolenaar.net/2009_nl_a4.pdf

Each is about 300 Kbyte. A preview can be seen on my home
site: http://www.moolenaar.net/#Calendar

If you print it on thick paper you can fold it so that it stands on your
desk. One side contains a useful 12-month calendar. On the other side
there is brief information about ICCF-Holland, Vim and A-A-P.

Happy Vimming in 2009!
