Subject: Searching for Vim scripts
Bram@...
Send Email Send Email

Hello Vim users,

So far we only had the possibility to search for scripts on the Vim
website. Of course you could use your favorite search engine, but then
you would find any type of file, not just Vim scripts.

I have now added a search box to the search page on www.vim.org where
you can specifically search for Vim scripts, anywhere on the internet.
This uses Google Code Search. It not only finds individual "*.vim"
files but also scripts inside archives. E.g., in the Vim distribution.

There is one extra special thing: You search with a regexp pattern.
Thus what you type in the search box are not keywords, it is different
from a normal Google search. For example, you can search for
"python.*indent" and find matches in "Python indent", "GetPythonIndent"
and "python_highlight_indent_errors". The regexp synax used is Posix,
it's different from Vim regexp.

Try it out on the Vim search page (second box from the top):
        http://www.vim.org/search.php

Happy Vimming!

Hello Vim users,

I have created the Vim desktop calendar for 2008. You can find three
versions (English Letter, English A4, Dutch A4) here:
http://www.moolenaar.net/index.html#Calendar

This time of year many people give presents. In case you would like to
make a child in Uganda happy, consider giving it a present:
http://iccf-holland.org/gifts.html

In case you are ordering presents at Amazon, don't forget to use the
ICCF search page. Then about 5% of the sales goes to help Vim's charity
project. It doesn't cost you anything.

Hello Vim users,

I have added two items to vote on:

- add collaborative editing: changes made to a file show up in another
   Vim in a second
- add flexible tab stops, can be used for tables

Registered users and sponsors can change their votes. See this page for
info: http://www.vim.org/sponsor/index.php
Note that I'm very busy, I have little time for new features at the
moment. I can't make promises about when a new feature will be added.

I'm glad to report that in 2007 I have received a total of 9000 euro.
All this money has been sent to Uganda, to help the children in Kibaale.
Thanks to all the Vim supporters!

The project is doing well. We expect to have 766 children in nursery,
primary and secondary school when the it starts again in a couple of
weeks. More children are studying in other schools.

One of the big projects for 2008 is building a new clinic. The number
of patients has been increasing steadily, the current building is worn
out and too small. The plans have been approved, the builders are
expected to start next month.

More information about the project on the ICCF website:

Hello Vim users,

In case you were wondering what's with all these patches: I'm planning
to make a Vim 7.2 release soon. This will be a minor release that
includes all the patches and updated runtime files. I do have a few
things that I like to finish, such as the floating point patch. We
should also do a short beta test. So it will still take several weeks.

In Kibaale they are working on clinic 2.0. It's really a major release,
it will be a big improvement for the poor people living in and around
Kibaale. I have created a page with information:

	 http://iccf-holland.org/clinic.html

The building is almost finished, but we still need funds for furniture
and equipment. Please consider making a donation.

The Kibaale Children's Centre is Vim's charity project. If you use Vim
and you like it, please consider showing your gratitude by helping them.

Subject: Vim version 7.2a ready for BETA testing
Bram@...

Hello Vim users,

Announcing: Vim (Vi IMproved) version 7.2a BETA

This is a BETA release of Vim 7.2. It consists of Vim 7.1 plus all
patches, updated runtime files and some more.

I expect this to be reasonable stable, since most of the patches have
been used by many people already. However, I did include several
patches the last few days, this might break something.

Please report every problem you find! The time until a 7.2 release
depends on how many problems are reported.

The biggest addition is floating support. Once you have installed Vim
7.2a BETA you can find details about the changes since Vim 7.1 with
":help version-7.2".

Testing
-------

This is a BETA test version. Please give it a good test and report
anything that isn't right. That includes a crash but also a typo in the
documentation.

I will not make an Amiga or OS/2 binary for Vim 7.2a. A Mac version is
hopefully available soon on http://macvim.org/ and/or from the MacVim
project at http://code.google.com/p/macvim/

Gratitude
---------

If you like Vim, this is the way to say thanks:

Hello Vim users,

Announcing: Vim (Vi IMproved) version 7.2

This is a minor release of Vim. In the 15 months since Vim 7.1 many
bugs were fixed and runtime files have been added and updated. There
are also security improvements, therefore it's a good idea to upgrade.

The main new feature since 7.1 is floating point support. You can use
it in the Vim script language to add up a list of amounts, for example.

Once you have installed Vim 7.2 you can find details about the changes
since Vim 7.1 with ":help version-7.2".

Notes
-----

The new O'Reilly book "Learning the Vi and Vim editors" is now
available. See http://iccf-holland.org/click5.html

I will not make an Amiga or OS/2 binary for Vim 7.2. A Mac version is
hopefully available soon on http://macvim.org/ and/or from the MacVim
project at http://code.google.com/p/macvim/
A Win64 binary should be available soon at
http://code.google.com/p/vim-win3264/

There is no 16-bit DOS version, the executable is too big to fit in the
limited memory space.

Hello Vim users,

The usual Vim desktop calendar is now available for download and
printing:

English - A4 : http://www.moolenaar.net/2009_en_a4.pdf
English - Letter: http://www.moolenaar.net/2009_en_le.pdf
Dutch - A4: http://www.moolenaar.net/2009_nl_a4.pdf

Each is about 300 Kbyte. A preview can be seen on my home
site: http://www.moolenaar.net/#Calendar

If you print it on thick paper you can fold it so that it stands on your
desk. One side contains a useful 12-month calendar. On the other side
there is brief information about ICCF-Holland, Vim and A-A-P.

Happy Vimming in 2009!

Hello Vim users,

Just a short note about Vim's charity project. I have made the
ICCF Holland financial report for 2008.

The total amount of donations has decreased a little bit. The rising
trend of previous years has stopped. If you know a way to make it go up
again in 2009, let me know!

We have again managed to keep the overhead very low: 99.3% of the
donated money was sent to the project in Uganda. The 0.7% costs is
mostly for international banking.

You can find the report here: http://iccf-holland.org/jaar2008.pdf

I will visit the project the coming weeks. I'll let you know what is
going on in Kibaale in a month or so.

More information about the project on the ICCF website:

Hello Vim users,

Vim comes for free. I do ask you to consider helping Vim's charity,
please read on.

In April I have visited the Kibaale Childrens Centre. My overall
impression is that things are very organized, many children are given
proper education and other basic needs. We are gradually able to help
the community improve the living conditions in this poor district. You
can read my report, with lots of pictures, here:
http://iccf-holland.org/news.html#April2009

The new clinic has become very popular. Every day many patients come
here for medical help that would otherwise not be available to them.
The Kibaale clinic saves lives!

This popularity comes at a price. We struggle to pay for all the
medicine, salaries of the medical staff, maintenance of equipment, etc.
Therefore I have set up this page for sponsoring a room in the clinic:
http://iccf-holland.org/sponsorclinic.html

We need your help!

Hello Vim users!

Vim bug fixes are coming out one by one, not very exciting but essential
maintenance. Keeps me busy. Nothing worth announcing though, that is
why this list has been quiet for a while.

I thought you might want to know that I'll be doing a talk at the
reflections/projections conference, October 17 in Illinois. Not about
Vim but a new fun project I'm working on: Zimbu.

Hello Vim users!

The Vim calendar has been updated for 2010. I replaced the info about
my old A-A-P project with Zimbu, which you probably find a bit more
interesting. You can find the calendar in PDF format, ready to print,
here: http://www.moolenaar.net/#Calendar

You can now order a T-shirt and Polo with the Vim logo from Freewear.
This was the design that most Vim users liked.

Hello Vim users!

Your donations for the use of Vim and otherwise have resulted in a very
good year for ICCF. For the first time the total amount went over
50,000 euro!

It's good that we have the increase, the project is more busy than
ever. This year seven of our students finished secondary school, some
with very good results. We will try to help them get a good place in
higher education. These children will hopefully be a teacher,
businessman or doctor in a few years.

You can find the report on the ICCF website: http://iccf-holland.org

Thank you very much for your contributions to help the children in
Kibaale.

Subject: Planning Vim 7.3
Bram@...
Send Email Send Email

Hello Vim users!

It has been a long time since the last release: Vim 7.2 was released in
August 2008. There have been many patches, but not everybody will use
them. It's about time for 7.3!

I will try to include a few patches that have been pending for a while.
I don't have much time available, thus I will only include things that
take a few hours of my time. That basically means patches that are
ready to be included.

I will check the voting list to see what the most popular features are:
http://www.vim.org/sponsor/vote_results.php

One thing that I will certainly do is improve the MS-Windows installer.
I recently installed Vim on a new laptop and it didn't work very well.
More and more people are using Windows 7. I think that taking Window XP
as the minimal platform will work well. I hope we can make installing
Vim on MS-Windows as simple and reliable as possible.

I also plan to drop the split in "lang" and "extra" archives. The
burden to have several feature sets is no longer justified by the
slightly smaller distribution. Putting everything together makes things
a lot simpler.

Mercurial is going to be the primary method for distribution. I'll
drop CVS, it slows me down too much. Someone else might be able to
mirror the Mercurial repository in CVS, like it's done for Subversion.

I hope to bring out a first beta version by the end of May. That gives
everybody time to send me updated and polished patches and runtime
files. I need to have these halfway May, I also need some time to
integrate everything.

It would also be nice if we can update the spell files. Volunteers
wanted! See $VIMRUNTIME/spell/README.txt, the "MAINTAINING A LANGUAGE"
section.

Hello Vim users,

Announcing: Vim (Vi IMproved) version 7.3b BETA

This is a BETA release of Vim 7.3. It consists of Vim 7.2 plus all
patches, updated runtime files and some more.

7.3b both includes lots of fixes and a few new features. Everything
needs to be tested to verify no new problems have been introduced.

Please report every problem you find! The time until a 7.3 release
depends on how many problems are reported.

The biggest additions since 7.2:
- Persistent undo, undo for reload
- Blowfish encryption, also encrypt the swap file
- Conceal text (note: since 7.3a 'conc' was renamed to 'cole')
- Lua interface
- Python 3 interface

I will no longer include new features in 7.3, it's only testing now.

Once you have installed Vim 7.3b BETA you can find details about the
changes since Vim 7.2 with:
	 :help version-7.3

Known problem: The MS-Windows self-installing executable for 7.2a has
set the wrong path for the uninstaller. Installing Vim 7.3b after 7.3a
will give an error message. You can uninstall Vim 7.3a through the
menu: Start/All Programs/Vim 7.3a/Uninstall

Testing
-------

Please especially test the persistent undo and encryption. These need
to work reliably.

Report anything that isn't right. That includes a crash but also a typo
in the documentation and a missing file.

Gratitude
---------

If you like Vim, this is the way to say thanks:

I managed to fix this quickly. The gvim73c.exe on the ftp site already
has the fix.

Hello Vim users,

Announcing: Vim (Vi IMproved) version 7.3d BETA

This is a BETA release of Vim 7.3. It consists of Vim 7.2 plus all
patches, updated runtime files and some more.

7.3d is for a large part the same as 7.3c, but the MS-Windows
executables have been build with MSVC 2008. They should now work on
Windows 2000 too. The install and uninstall problems for 64 bit systems
have been fixed (I hope).

Please report every problem you find! The 7.3 release should not
contain a problem because you didn't report it.

Once you have installed Vim 7.3d BETA you can find details about the
changes since Vim 7.2 with:
	 :help version-7.3

Testing
-------

Please especially test the persistent undo and encryption. These need
to work reliably.

Report anything that isn't right. That includes a crash but also a typo
in the documentation and a missing file.

Gratitude
---------

If you like Vim, this is the way to say thanks:

Now that Vim 7.3 has been released, these features no longer need your
votes, as they have been included:

- "add the conceal patch from Vince Negri"
- "add a strong encryption method"
- "Add the relative numbers patch by Markus Heidelberg"
- "add persistent undo: undo is still possible after exiting Vim"

I have removed these items. If you voted on them, you should now use
your votes for other features. You can update them here, after logging

"So this is it," said Arthur, "we are going to die."
"Yes," said Ford, "except...no! Wait a minute!" He suddenly lunged across
the chamber at something behind Arthur's line of vision. "What's this
switch?" he cried.
"What? Where?" cried Arthur, twisting around.
"No, I was only fooling," said Ford, "we are going to die after all."

Hello Vim users,

I have visited Vim's recommended charity in Uganda. This project helps
needy children in Kibaale. You can find it on the ICCF website:
http://iccf-holland.org/news.html

A lot of pictures can be found here:

In case you wonder how much of the donations actually ends up at the
project: for 2010 it was 99.5 %. More numbers in the financial report:

Hello Vim users,

Upon request I have added a voting item:

- better plugin management system: automatic updates and dependencies

The manual downloading of scripts is a bit cumbersome. Some automatic
way, kind of an app store, would be useful.
How to do this is another question. There are some useful remarks
here: http://www.charlietanksley.net/philtex/sane-vim-plugin-management/

If you already have votes, you can change them here:
http://www.vim.org/sponsor/vote.php

To be able to vote you have to sponsor Vim development with at least 10
euro. More information here: http://www.vim.org/sponsor/index.php

As always, the money is used to help needy children in Uganda.

Hello Vim and iPad users,

If you have an iPad, you can now run Vim on it:

Obviously not having a keyboard is a drawback, but otherwise it appears
to work well.

Subject: Vim charity financial results
Bram@...

Hello Vim users,

Vim's charity has done well in 2011. Thank you all for contributing to
the lives of poor children in the south of Uganda!

Currently about 90 children are being sponsored. One-time donations
help many more children and support families in and around Kibaale with
medical assistance, health education and more.

The financial report can be found on the ICCF website:
http://iccf-holland.org/jaarrekening2011en.pdf (English)
http://iccf-holland.org/jaarrekening2011nl.pdf (Dutch)

Currently we have more than a dozen children that have done very well in
secondary school and are now studying at university level. Since quality
of education has been going up many universities now require the
students to work on a computer. But most of our students don't have one
and struggle to use public computers, which slows down their studies
significantly.

I have thought of collecting second-hand laptops, but sending them to
Uganda and getting them through customs is very difficult and expensive.
Therefore I am asking for money, so that we can buy the computers in
Uganda. This will also include a guarantee, laptops do break.

A laptop costs about $600. We need this for about 8 students. Assuming
a donation of $100, we need 48 Vim users to donate. Please help!
How to make a donation: http://www.iccf.nl/donate.html

If you can't afford a cash donation and/or want to get some movies,
music, etc., please use the links on this page to buy at Amazon:
