Hello folks,
I'm writing this email to tell you about some news from Viralator
project. It was a long time ago since the last release and finally I
got some excitement to the community.
The next release is almost done and we're very close of a version 1
stable release. I would like to put all features requests in this
version and keep version 0.9.9 just for minor adjustments or bug
fixes. Since I start working with the Viralator group, we added
a lot of new features and I think is time for a stable release to be
around.
Version 0.9.8 includes the following new features:
1 - Viralator nows include a detailed file log, in the model of the
Log4J project (many thanks for the developers of Log:Log4perl
module!). This means that nows is possible to setup log level for
different parts of the program. Apache's log file will be used by now
for only the messages that could not be catched up (in other words, a
complete disaster).
2 - Viralator web browser nows can use Squid as a proxy, which means
Squid cache will be available, improving user experience by provinding
a better time response. In case of virus infection, Viralator will
request to Squid to remove the object from it's cache (there is a
configuration in Squid to enable that).
3 - A new Javascript control is available to avoid users to make
download requests twice (or more time).
If you would like to ask for a feature in Viralator, this is your best
chance to see it implemented! New features will be added just after
version 1.0: huge changes will be implemented in Viralator then. For
those users eager to see better performance or web page templates to
change, Viralator will became a full MVC web application running with
mod_perl and with a separated/dedicated server to handle the virus
scanner program.
Regards,
Alceu
Ok, here is my guess...
Clamav client, when finishes, returns different values
depending on the result of the operation (please,
check the manpage of clamscan or clamscan).
Viralator expects to receive 0 (zero) as a good
result, everything else should be an issue. This may
be considered a bug, I still need to think about.
Meanwhile, I would ask you to run the client mannualy
and double check the value returned (from the logs,
looks like "2304") and see what it means.

Alceu

Hi Alceu,
He's here to show he doesn't understand much about people's needs. Just in case
you missed it:
Advantages:
Scanning starts simultaneous with download. Compressed files are a problem
because they are only extracted during download.
How is him saying that compressed file scanning is not working properly an
advantage for his scanner? I think he was saying that if people want to scan
compressed files (and who doesn't) then Viralator is better than HAVP as it
fails to handle them. :)

Hello Ernie,
Thanks for reporting that. It's a bit weird, because I
went to the translation directory
(http://viralator.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/translations.cgi)
and the english version is ok there.
I'm not sure it's worthy to create a new release just
because of that, I think I'll include it with the new
changes I'm working on for next release.

Alceu

Thanks Ernie. Good to know that this list is still
alive. ;-)
I'll fix this for next version of Viralator. I would
like to change all these translations file to Unicode:
this would solve a lot of problems.
If anybody know how to work with Perl, Unicode and web
applications... please let know.

Hello,
I recently upgraded to version 0.9.7 of viralator. While debugging, I
found that there was a parameter missing from the language file
(english.txt). Maybe you noticed already, but otherwise the missing
parameter is:
done = Done.

Ernie

Well, it depends. What is taking 5 minutes to finish?
The whole process or only the scanning?
It's quite difficult for Viralator to make the
scanning process slow, since is the scanner itself
which does all the hard work. My suggestions is that
you check the viruscanner speed and configuration.
For example, using clamd (and clamdscan) from Clamav
is much faster than using clamscan.

Thanks a lot Mr Alceu R. It works now. But it takes quite some time to
finish scanning and start download. abt 5 mins. Is that my internet line
problem or is there some configuration i can do?
The last time (yr ago) I managed to configure this was not this slow.
Once again, thanks a lot for your kind assistance , really appreciate it.

Greetings,
Some time ago we received some people asking about
giving support on Viralator for those languages that
does not uses ISO-8859-1. Besides this support exists
since version 0.9.6 (Viralator is not using Unicode
yet) the project did not received any translation file
yet.
I would like to ask for those users that send us the
translation file updated. Any problem using the
translation kit
(http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=95856&package_id=178520)
please let me know.

Ladies and gentleman,
For those who doesn't check Freshmeat there is a new
version of Viralator available for download. The
version is 0.9.7 and corrects some bugs (please check
Notes for more info).
The link below shows the download page:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=95856&package_id=102301
Besides we want to finally have a stable version for
Viralator, I do think that we should add logging and
improve speed of Viralator. I would like to receive
some feedback from you about that.

This means that your box has the wrong version of CGI,
which is a Perl module (and a Perl module is somehow
like a library). You must update it at least to
version 3.15, or Viralator won't work at all: I had to
put this due some bugs I found in earlier versions.
If your box is connected to the internet, is pretty
simple to get a new version of CGI: go to the shell
and type
perldoc cpan
to get more information. Beware that if you're running
a Linux distro, you should check if the CGI Perl
module is not installed by a package (RPM, DEB, etc):
if this is true, you must uninstall the package and
then install the new version of the module using the
CPAN module.
This information should be in the FAQ anyway. My
apologies.

perl -T viralator.cgi
CGI version 3.15 required--this is only version 3.01 at viralator.cgi
line 33.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at viralator.cgi line 33.

Dear friends,
I am failing to get a working viralator from running. I wanted to try
if entering http://myserverip/cgi-bin/viralator.cgi?url=%u directly from
the browser would get me to the viralator pop up , but instead it gives
me the following error.
*Internal Server Error*
*The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was
unable to complete your request.*
*Please contact the server administrator, bfyong@... and
inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have
done that may have caused the error.*
*More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
*
I have configured the whole viralator thing according to the install
instruction, yet when I clicked onto any scan applicable files it comes
out with this page. I narrowed down my fault by trying to enter the url
http://myserverip/cgi-bin/viralator.cgi?url=%u, yet it gives me that
Internal Serve Error thingi..
Anyone knows where might have gone wrong? I can't figure out what went
wrong because according to the install instruction, there isn't really
much complicated part....
pls help me with this...I can't find any more source of possible error
in my configuration...thanks fro taking time helping..
Regards
Yong

There are some examples here:
http://viralator.sourceforge.net/install.html
You should check the documentation of the redirector
you're using to avoid redirecting requests with
dinamic URL's.
