Reply Message #96 of 1082 |
Hi all,

I'm experiencing the problem as well and I am so glad I am not alone
in this misery. Here is my machine configuration

Windows 98 Se
Pentium III 800, Abit BF6 Motherboard
Promise Ultra 100 PCI card
Fujitsu 20 MB Hardrive (ATA 66 only)
Diamond S540 Video card
Diamond S400 Sound card
Epson Printer
Kingston Ethernet card
HP Scanjet 5P (this has an ISA card)
HP 9100 internal CD Writer

Right after I got my Promise controller, I reformatted my hard drive
using FDISK and did a fresh install Windows. The Windows intallation
was OK then I started to install my hardware drivers in this order:
video, sound, printer, modem, scanner, network, Promise controller,
and lastly the CD writer.

It was when I was installing the CD writer drivers when the BSOD
started to appear. In the beginning I thought it was because I was
using a new driver for my CD writer. But it was not. I reinstalled
Windows so many times, changing the order by which I will install the
drivers and one pattern was clear: the BSOD will appear only after I
installed the Promise driver.

I found no solution to the problem yet. I've tried unchecking one of
the Load Power Module as suggested by the group but it did not work.
Defrag did not work either. I will try removing the Stimon and hope
it will work.

I have one question: Without the promise driver, I could still read
and write to my hard disk, what is then the implications of not
installing the Promise driver?

Thanks.

Edwin
