Ok- I'll take a closer look at this soon.

I don't really have a python interpreter stuck in VP- it just calls
python like any other script might- you could easily do the same with
ruby, perl, bash or whatever you have installed.

No, this is a brand new pad (actually just downloaded yesterday after I
saw the Innovators thing).

I will outline my intentions so that it's clear exactly what I did.

I love OmniOutliner, I use it for task tracking, project tracking,
daily stuff, basically anything that I want to be able to group and
check off as Done. But I don't have a way to link outlines together. In
a lot of cases I want to be able to separate tasks into mini-outlines.
When I saw Voodoopad initially I thought 'Great! But I want my stuff in
Outliner.' Then I saw that you could drag and drop files.

So, I opened up VoodooPad, started a new pad called PersonalTasks,
opened it and then dragged a selection of outliner files onto the pad.
All of these files start with PersonalWeek MMDDYY.ooutline. What
VoodooPad did was automatically make PersonalWeek a link, clicking on
it makes a new pad called PersonalWeek. Somehow I did something else
and ooutline became a link.

But the only way I can actually click on the file name is to highlight
the full name and then click on link.

Having a Python hook is an interesting idea. I'm going to download your
Python scripts and see what they do.

Let's say the file name is "pdf file.pdf" - do you already have a page
called "pdf" in the document? If that's the case, then VoodooPad will
see that first. This probably won't be fixed for the 1.1 release, but
I've got some ideas on how to fix it in the next.

At one time I made some rumblings about selling the source to people who
were willing to pay. I might still do that, but I've also got some
ideas on how to open up VP without just giving everything away.

While you can't turn it off for a single word- you can turn it off for
all "potential links" - open up the preferences and uncheck the
"Highlight potential links" box.

Hi all,
I'm using the latest alpha 8 and was wondering if this was an issue in
just the alpha version or also in the 1.0 release. When I drop a file
onto a pad, if the file has a space in it it doesn't link it as a
VoodooLink, only the first part of the name is a link, which attempts
to open a new pad by that name. And the only way to visit the file is
to highlight the entire name and click on link.

This looks great btw! Any plans on releasing the source? I would love
to hack at it and contribute some stuff back, but I need to bone up on
my Obj-C a little more before I'm ready to do that.

I realize that WikiWords (mixed-case) makes an automatic link, but in the few
short
days I have been using VoodooPad I have come to find this a possible
shortcoming.

For example, I have been using VoodooPad as a "to do" list as I prepare for an
exam.
Some of the subjects have acronyms involving all-caps or mixed-case, and this
generates unnecessary links. It would be very handy to be able to toggle this
behavior by highlighting and selecting a contextual menu.

Or, am I missing a feature that currently exists? Thanks.

VoodooPad 1.1a8 is built and ready to go-
This is just a very quick fix for a problem that was discovered a couple
of days ago on this list.

http://flyingmeat.com/x/VoodooPad1.1a8.dmg

And here are the very short release notes:

* Added a new Pref where you can control what a default page looks like.
* Fixed a bug where links would not work if the default font was not
found.

thanks,

This is currently not supported (for html- it is for rtfd as you found
out). I would like to add this to a future release however, so hope is
not lost :)

Hello,
Is it possible to drag a file to a pad, and then have the file
included with the
exported HTML files. For example, I've attempted adding a photo
to a pad, and then after exporting I have find the photo is not
included. When I
export to RTF the photo is included. Thanks for any help.

Can you seen me your prefrences file, and your .vdoc file too?

The prefs are in ~/Library/Preferences/com.flyingmeat.voodoonetkey.plist

also- one thing I was thinking might help me out, can you open up
Console.app, and then launch VoodooPad and see if anything prints out
from voodoopad? Quite often, error messages will be displayed out
there.

thanks,

The prefs are in ~/Library/Preferences/com.flyingmeat.voodoonetkey.plist

I can't get this to reproduce with my setup, maybe something in those
files will shed some light.

Hi Gus,

I'm running panther and just installed 1.1a7. None of the links in the
pages are working. When I hover over the link I get the status message
at the bottom to click, however no amount of clicking takes me to the
page. Any ideas? Going to install 1.0 again and see what happens.

Thanks,

Eric

Here are the release notes that highlight intersting features/bugs:

  * Fixed (again) a problem where file drops and pages with the same name
would cause unexpected behavior.
  * Fixed a problem where links with the german sharp s in them would
corrupt the .vdoc
  * Fixed a problem (and changing the file format in the process) where
certain characters would cause pages to be unarchivable- this problem
became apparent when using the Zaphino font and using certain glyphs.

  * Create a new document when trying to create a new page and no
documents are open.

I'm getting ready to release another update to VoodooPad- (1.1a7), but
first I want to see if anyone on this list would like to test out some
changes in it before it goes live. I guess that would make this 1.1a6
1/2. Anyway, this release isn't super secret, but I don't want it
getting out to the general public if possible.

The fix I'm curious about is this- There is (was) a problem where
certain letters with the "Zapfino Regular" font would cause a page to
become corrupt- I've fixed the problem, but in the process I had to
change the format of the way some of the data was saved. VoodooPad will
do the upgrade in the background for you automatically, so you shouldn't
see any problems, and I've tested it quite a bit and haven't run into
any cases where it flips out. But, I figured I would send out a quick
release so people could yell "Hey you broke my pad!" before I release
a7.

Here's the url:
http://flyingmeat.com/x/test/VoodooPad11a6.5.app.sit

Please, Please, Please back up your data before you run this.

Here are the current release notes:

Fixed (again) a problem where file drops and pages with the same name
would cause unexpected behavior.
Fixed a problem where links with the german sharp s in them would
corrupt the .vdoc
Fixed a problem (and changing the file format in the process) where
certain characters would cause pages to be unarchivable- this problem
became apparent when using the Zaphino font and using certain glyphs.
Added the ability to create aliases for url's, so you don't have to type
out the whole http://.../ to link to a website. This functionality has
been added to the "Page Info" window.
Fixed a problem where the document's dirty bit wasn't updating properly.
Brought the font panel back in the prefs so you can change the default
font.

Thanks, and be sure to let me know if you run into any bugs by either
emailing me or filling out a report at: http://www.flyingmeat.com/pyr/

This release is mostly about bug fixs. Some of the fixes are as
follows:

  * Fixed a problem with finding text that exists in a page, but VP
    doesn't see it.
  * Fixed some memory leaks.
  * Fixed a problem where serialized data was deleted out of the .vdoc
file, and it couldn't be unarchived
  * Fixed a drag and drop problem, where if VP wasn't in the forground,
file drops would not link up.
  * Fixed a bug where files weren't linked in a html export.
  * Fixed a bug where pages were made for file refs in various exports
  * Moved the "use metal windows" switch from the command line to a real
    button in the prefs window.
  * Added a pref to have VP export to a subfolder under the Notes folder.

A new alpha of VoodooPad is out, VoodooPad 1.1a5

Please back up your VoodooPad documents! (.vdoc's). There have been
changes in the file formats since 1.0 (and a little bit between the
1.1's), and I don't want anyone to lose any important data.

You can download 1.1a5 from here:
http://flyingmeat.com/x/VoodooPad1.1a5.dmg

Release notes for the release:

  * Added a toolbar to the linkables window, with open and delete
buttons. (You can now delete file links this way)
  * New/Updated icons
  * Fixed a problem with single window mode, when multiple documents were
open at the same time.
  * Moved the info drawer to a new window.
  * Removed the SWM toolbar icon.
  * Dynamically insert/remove the back and forward buttons in the toolbar
depending on your window preferences.
  * Removed extra warning when exporting to iPod notes and no iPod volume
is mounted.
  * Added the ability to have "aliases" to a page, which can be setup in
the "Page Info" window. The ability to do the same to url's will
probably be in the next release.

Please let me know if you find any problems with VoodooPad, either
through emailing me, or the online bug reporting database at:

Here are the release notes:

You can now have multiple pads open at the same time.
Open existing page sheet now works nicer.
Delete page has been improved (internal).
Added a new "Default Shell" preference- so you can run pages as scripts
without having a #!/bin/sh (or whatever you prefer) at the top.
Now remembering the window positions.
New File submenu- "Export" with the three usual export options plus a
new one- "Export To Folder as RTFD..."

That sounds reasonable- I'll see about getting it in a future version.

I'm seeing this problem too- I'll take a look at it and get a fix in. I did
however end up making a link by hitting command-option-o and then typing 5:00
into it, which should work until I get a real fix in.

Hey Gus,

I'm lovin' VoodooPad. Great work! I just got a new iPod and your program makes
stuff
in Notes much easier to find and read. Except all the HTMLs can only go in the
Notes
folder. This makes it hard to find files that are not part of VoodooPad. So what
I did
was create a sub-folder in the Notes folder and I moved all the HTMLs except
homepad into the sub-folder. I left homepad at the Notes level and edited it to
fix the
links. It would be great if you could give us the option to do this with the
"Export to
iPod Notes" ,that is, let us choose a sub-folder, leave the homepad in the Notes
folder
and fix the homepad links.

Also I think I found a bug. I am trying to put a TV guide on my iPod with
VoodooPad
so I need to use a time as a link. I tried to remove the colon from the set of
link
seperators. But I still couldn't use "5:00" as a link.

Thanks,
Mark

VoodooPad alpha 3 is ready to go-

http://flyingmeat.com/x/VoodooPad1.1a3.dmg

Here are the release notes for this version:

Fixed a problem where an assertion failed when trying to get a window's
title
New feature- when you drag and drop an image into a page, it'll ask you
if you want to paste in the image, or link to it.
No longer give a warning if you are trying to link a file into a page
that's already known in the document.
Made the "New Folder" button for the html export a little cleaner
Fixed a bug where exporting the doc to the iPod contacts folder failed.

Please let me know if you have any bug reports to share,

Ok, I found the problem- and I'll get a new build up tonight to fix it-

So, 1.1a2 is broken when exporting to the contacts folder, but 1.0
should be working just fine- If you want to open up your 1.1 file in
1.0 you need to download a little app I wrote to convert the file to
the older format: http://flyingmeat.com/x/vpxvert.01.dmg

Or you can just wait till later on tonight when I fix it (which is what
I would do :)

Sorry about the inconvenience,

Hrmmm, this does not seem to be working. I am using a2, and an trying to
use the "Export to iPod Contacts" - and nothing is showing up on the iPod at
all... I select it, and there is no kind of visual feedback at all that
anything is
going on.

I check the iPod, and there are no new contacts created at all, either...

Ideas? Should I revert back to 1.0? Will I be able to open my data in 1.0 if
I have already been using 1.1a2?

Thanks!

You can do this with both 1.1 and 1.0

The 1.1 release will export it to the "Notes" folder (assuming you
choose that menu option)- but that's really only useful if you have the
latest (3rd generation?) ipods.

In the case of the 2nd generation ipods, it'll export the contents to
your contacts folder, and the entries will show up in there. The menu
option is "Export to iPod..." in the 1.0 release, and in the latest 1.1
release it's called "Export to iPod Contacts..." - both are under the
File menu.

You can now download the latest build, VoodooPad 1.1a2 from our server.

http://flyingmeat.com/x/VoodooPad1.1a2.dmg

This build has been nothing but bug fixes, release notes are as follows:

VoodooPad 1.1 alpha 2:
Lots of little bug fixes, including:

Fixed a bug where you could open more than one window in
SingleWindowMode
Fixed the double spacing issue with the ipod export notes problem.
#139 - Fixed the BR html tag showing up in the export to notes.
#147 -Redid the wording on the export menu options, and added a "New
Folder" button
When moving into single window mode, and multiple windows are open- the
last window brought to front is the one kept open.
Fixed a problem when creating new pages in SWM, and the pages not
showing up.
#155 - Spaces are now added to the end of file drops so you can drage a
bunch of files in sucession, and it won't be some big jumbled mess.
#154 - You can now drag and drop multiple files onto voodoopad, and the
will app link up. Previous behavior only linked up the first one.
#145 - Fixed the linkables window to update on time
Auto-Report button now actually works (seen when there's a failed
assertion)

There is now a new program to convert and create voodoopad files
(vpxvert) from existing data sources- this will be updated over time.
This app is also open source, and available in the VoodooPad extras
section.
