VoodooPad 2.5b1 is ready to go.

The release notes are located here:
http://www.flyingmeat.com/voodoopad/previewvoodoopadreleasenotes.html

Make sure you backup all your VoodooPad documents first before trying
this and any new release. Paranoia can be good trait at times :)

You can download this release as one of the "latest builds" on this
page:
http://www.flyingmeat.com/voodoopad/beta.html

Below you'll find information on what is new. For a more complete
list, check out the release notes.

* Web Export
The HTML export has been completely redone, supporting exporting your
pages as Markdown, Textile, plain text, or using Apple's RTF to HTML
conversion (10.4 only) for high fidelity markup.
And that's not all. Web Export also allows you to choose from various
plugins which will give your pages a distinct look and feel to them.

* Multi-alias Support
Now your pages can have more than one alias! Make "Augie", "August",
"Gustav", and "Gusser" all link to a page named "Gus".

* Automator Actions
VoodooPad 2.5 now comes with a handful of Automator actions.

* More AppleScript Support
New "display name" property for pages, and the ability to retrieve
page keys from a document sorted by name, create date, and modified
date.

* Option to turn off self referencing links.
No longer have the index page link to itself.

* Application Services "Drop Page"
Now in addition to "Make New Page" in the Application Services menu,
we now have an "Append to Services Drop Page" menu item. So when you
are in Safari and you see a snippet of text you'd like to snatch and
catalog later one, you can select this menu item and it will be
appended to a special page for later cataloging.

* The Smaller Things
Pages now re-encrypt themselves when you leave them.
New "Skip on export" option for pages in the info sheet.
Improved AddressBook integration.
Spotlight enhancements.
New "Highlight" menu item under the Format menu to change the
background of selected text.
Rename categories by holding down the option key while double
clicking on the name.
New preference for for setting the external editor.
Bug fixes!

VoodooPad 2.5 will be a free upgrade for anyone with a 2.0 or 2.1
license. At this point in the development cycle, I'm going to focus
on fixing any bugs that crop up. I leave new features for the alpha
builds, so there shouldn't be any major changes from here on out.

If you run into any problems or have questions or comments, please
let me know.

thanks again,

-gus

VoodooPad 2.5b2 is up on the server.

Here are the release notes for this release:

* Added the character '-' to the parser tokens, so links to the index
page written as "-index" will work.
* New hidden pref for inserting newlines after a file drop "defaults
write com.flyingmeat.VoodooPad fileDropAddsNewline -bool YES"
* Changed the way links are opened in new windows if the command key
is down- ie, it'll never open up in a new window if told to by a menu
item
* New web export template- "Falling Leaves"
* Pasted tiffs are now converted to pngs for web export.
* Fixed web export problem with page names that contained :'s, /'s or
\'s
* You can set the background color for NewPageTemplate, and it'll be
used for new pages

Let me know right away if you come across any bugs that are new in
this release. Or any other bugs for that matter.

Don't forget to backup your VoodooPad documents regularly, especially
before trying any new release.

You can download this release from:

Hi.

I have encountered a problem with VoodooPad. Starting from version
2.1.2 (after upgrade) the application constantly crashes. Usually
when saving the document (each time), occasionally when changing to
another application, sometimes when changing to already open page of
VoodooPad. Also, when trying to html-export.

I have a document which been created at time of version 1.0. It seems
that the problem is with only that document. Other older, and newer
documents work fine.

Any way to easy fix for this ? Or find out what crashes. The file is
big one about 67 pahes and wouldn't like to start moving it to new
document one by one . I have tried to 'save as' with new version, but
no help in that.
I think I have today flooded you with a bunch of crashreports.

What would be great is if you could send me your document so I can
reproduce the problem on my end. (Zip the sucker up first though).

I got your crash reports (yea, there were a bunch of them.. at least
I hope they were from you... ), so I know the general area where it's
crashing but if I can get it to reproduce I can pinpoint exactly
where it is and get it fixed right away.

thanks,

VoodooPad 2.5b3 is ready.

I've got a good feeling this is going to be the last beta.

I've got a good feeling I just jinxed myself as well.

Here are the links:
VoodooPad:
http://flyingmeat.com/download/VoodooPad2.5b3.dmg
VoodooPad Lite:
http://flyingmeat.com/download/VoodooPadLite2.5b3.dmg

Here's what's new:

Fixed a crasher having to do with invalid dates in the document
Fixed a xml export problem with \f characters showing up in the xml
(which is illegal xml)
Fixed a crasher with the backlinks drawer
Fixed a performance problem when opening documents, and deleting or
creating pages
Fixed a problem with the info sheet freaking out- the info widget
that told you a page was re-encrypted was disabled since it was
causing the problems

Make sure to backup your documents and other important files on a
regular basis! And just to be super safe, burn them to a CD and ship
them off to cold storage somewhere in Alaska.

VoodooPad 2.5 has been released (finally!)

10.3.9 or later is required for VoodooPad 2.5. Some new features are
only available in 10.4.

You can download this release from the website here:

And of course, make sure to always backup your documents often, and
especially before trying any new software.

Here's a quick rundown on what's new:

New "display name" property for pages, and the ability to retrieve
page keys from a document sorted by name, create date, and modified

Gus,
	 Just tried the web export feature in 2.5.1. Great! This app just
keeps getting better and better. Still would love to see a CLI
utility for Vpad, but got to say this update was worth the wait.

Thanks,

Cool, I'm glad you like it. I'm pretty happy with the web export
template stuff, and I hope it gives people enough of an opportunity
to be creative with it.

A quick little solution to the command line program would be a python
script that took input and called VP via AppleScript like so:

#!/usr/bin/python

import sys
import os
import getopt
import string

pageName = "piped text"

if len(sys.argv) == 2:
      pageName = sys.argv[1]

data = sys.stdin.read()

data = data.replace('"', '\\"')

script = '''tell application "VoodooPad"
    tell document 1 to create page with title "%s" with contents ""
    append text "%s" to page "%s" of document 1
    activate
end tell''' % (pageName, data, pageName)

script = script.replace("'", "\\'")

os.popen("/usr/bin/osascript -e '%s'" % (script))

Save that somewhere in your path, and make it executable via chmod
755 (I'm assuming you know what I'm talking about since you're asking
for a command line program- if not I'll make a page up on the wiki
that explains it a bit more.)

thanks,

VoodooPad 2.5.2 beta 2 is up under the latest builds page.

http://www.flyingmeat.com/voodoopad/beta.html

I didn't make any special designations for it- downloading
VoodooPadLatest.dmg will get you it.

Make sure to backup your documents before running this or any other
new build.

I didn't announce it on the list, but 2.5.1 had a single fix in it:
* Fixed a problem with brand new documents not working correctly with
the backlinks drawer

2.5.2 has the following fixes:
* Fixed a problem with web export and embeded two embeded images in
the same page having the same name.
* Creating a page with AppleScript didn't remember the correct case.
This is now fixed
* Fixed a problem with AppleScript and getting the name of a window
* Fixed a problem with OpenGL not being initialized correctly with
older graphics cards

.. and in case you're wondering where OpenGL is used, it's in the web
export window when you press the little ? button. It's kind of a
neat little effect that I stole from Panic's application "Transmit".

I'm treating this beta build like a final candidate. If you find any
problems, let me know asap.

thanks!

I can't seem to get this bug to happen on my box, but here's
something to try.

What happens if you paste this into Terminal.app?
open "file://localhost/Users/foo/Desktop/main.c"

or even:
ls -l /Users/foo/Desktop/main.c

Maybe there is something special about the file that is keeping VP
from opening it up.

This does not work. I get the following error -
2005-12-21 20:59:45.356 open[400] LSOpenFromURLSpec()
returned -10814 for application (null) path
/Users/foo/Desktop/main.c.

Also, in X11
gvim /Users/foo/Desktop/main.c
Works

main.c is just a text file

It sounds like it can't find an application to open up the file
with. I'm wondering if you can even double click on it in the Finder?

I would try getting info on it, and then setting a default editor on
it ("Open With") so the file knows what to open up in.

thanks,

In finder I right clicked on the file and put in
textedit at the application to open with. Now clicking
on the link to the file in VoodooPad opens the file
correctly.

Anyone know how I can set the open with application as
a X11 application (gvim) ?

Here's a pressing question.

The next version of VoodooPad is going to have a new file format, and
I'm going to give it a new file extension as well. Talking it over
with the Drunken Batman ( http://drunkenblog.com/ , it's a fun blog
if you aren't reading it already ) he's given me some good
suggestions and I've got my preference, but he also thinks I should
probably get a second opinion or something.

a) .vpad
b) .voodoo
c) .voodoopad

Any preferences?

Hello, non-us-keyboard VP users (and hello gus),

I'm a fan of bulleted lists in vp. Straight, hierarchical, all of them.
But the shortcut for "indent" (alt + command + " ] ") doesn't work for
my german keyboard layout, as " ] " is already the combination of alt
+ " 5 ".  So, the workflow/user experience of making large list is a
little different from the nice Quicktime demo on the web.

Would it be possible to localize the keyboard shortcuts? If so, I'm
going to make a draft for german, to be discussed with other german vp
users.

Anyway, best brainsaver ever. Great app.

In theory at least, a file format ought to be independent of the
application that created it. So as VoodooPad is an application or 'pad'
that works with 'voodoo' it follows to go with 'b'...

My vote is for c) .voodoopad.

When a doc is on my mac, the icon and the finder tell me what it is.
If it were on an ftp server or some other remote server, I get less
help (depends how I'm connected to the server) and that's when I
appreciate a nice, self describing extension. Also, it seems
descriptive extensions is a precedent Apple is setting
(iMovieProject, xcodeproj, workflow).

I too enjoy the DrunkenBlog, but he unfortunately doesn't publish the
entire entries via RSS, so I rarely read it (I use NetNewsWire, of
course)..

I would prefer .voodoopad, simply because it's most verbose. There's no
(practical) limit on file names these days, and people who are bothered
by extensions can hide them anyway.. And .voodoopad leaves no question
as to what app the file belongs to, even if the desktop database is
broken (or the file has been copied to another machine).

It is possible, but not something that I've made an easy way to do at
this point.

There are two ways of doing this. The first is to modify the
MainMenu.nib file using Interface Builder if you have the developer
tools installed. The drawback with this is you'll have to do this
for every new release of VoodooPad.

Your second option is to use defaults in Terminal.app. Here's an
example to swap the keyboard shortcuts for Paste and Paste with
current style:
defaults write com.flyingmeat.VoodooPad NSUserKeyEquivalents
'{"Paste"="@~$V"; "Paste with Current Style"="@V";}'

The problem with this is that it's not supported by Apple anywhere I
can see, and it might go away some day.

I actually have gone through format changes in the past this way-
VoodooPad 1.0 had a different format than 1.1 (even though both were
xml/plist files), and 2.0 added some stuff as well. I used a
variation on the magic-byte-pattern to do this. However it's not
going to work as well for the next version, since I'm pretty sure I'm
going to be using a package to store the information (which is just a
fancy folder).

I can detect if the file being opened is a folder or a file, but the
behavior for backing up voodoopad files is going to change for some
users. And I'd rather not have people guessing wether or not it's a
folder or a file.

I've been toying with html export and noticed one thing. When
exporting with the Falling leaves plugin the document headers are
exported twice. They are included on template.html, at their correct
place and then again when $page constant is replaced with page
content (I assume, $page includes also the html headers ?).

Resulting html file like this:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en">

	 <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
	 <link rel="stylesheet" href="iterationx.css" type="text/css"
media="screen,projection" />
</head>

Whic is a bit messy and absolutely non valid.
Any way to avoid this ?
Would it be possible to add a constant that refers only to page
content, and omits the headers alltogether ?

Currently, there isn't anyway to avoid this. I'll see what I can do
to fix this.

the $page$ bit is supposed to do this, but there's a bug somewhere in
what I'm doing.

If you're up to it, the quick fix is to copy the Falling Leaves
plugin, open up the package and remove the STYLE element from
"NSExcludedElementsDocumentAttribute" the Info.plist file.  I haven't
tested this much so there might be some side effects, but on first
look it fixed the duplicate head elements.

My suggestion is to keep it shorter rather than longer, otherwise
part of the filename is likely to get truncated in various places -
.e.g column listing, 4 characters should always be enough for an
extension. (3 in the unlikely event that you plan on doing a windows
version)

Keep up the good work.

Bug or not a bug ?

But it seems that unselecting 'self-referencing links' on
preferences -> appearance does not affect the web export. Meaning
that even if unselected, the self-references appear on exported html.

I just wanted to let you guys know, that I plan on building VoodooPad
2.5.3 as a Universal Binary.

In fact, I've got a "latest" build of it ready right now if anyone
has a new intel iMac (I do!) and you want to test it out:

http://www.flyingmeat.com/voodoopad/beta.html

I should note that none of the extra plugins out there have been made
Universal Binaries yet, so they won't work when VP is run as an intel
application. However you can set an option on VoodooPad's Info
window (from the finder) so that it'll run under Rosetta. I haven't
actually tried this yet, but in theory that's how it should work.

Let me know if you run into any issues.

thanks,

VoodooPad and VoodooPad Lite 2.5.3 have been released.

Here are the release notes:
Fixed a possible crasher with the backlinks drawer
Fixed (another) problem with AppleScript not remembering the correct
case when creating a new page.
Fixed an iPod export problem where pages that were marked as "skip on
export" were being exported anyway
Fixed a web export problem having to do with a combination of spaces
and slashes in a page name
Fixed a problem where self-referencing links were showing up on web
export when it was turned off in the preferences
Updated documentation
Universal Binary

Remember to always backup your documents before you use this and any
other new releases.

You can download this release from:
