Now, when printing, links print like normal text. I see this as
positive, since coloured and underlined links on paper are useless and
also this save color ink cartridge.

I just downloaded vpPro-3.2b2 (after having slept through 3.2b1).
When I try to load my old pads, it loads some of them, and completely
fails to load others and repeatedly generates errors.
    When I first tried to run it, I got the following two messages in
my console log:

2007-05-22 09:51:19.554 VoodooPad Pro[19115] *** -[NSCFString
keyEnumerator]: selector not recognized [self = 0xf0000]
2007-05-22 09:51:19.554 VoodooPad Pro[19115] Exception raised during
posting of notification. Ignored. exception: *** -[NSCFString
keyEnumerator]: selector not recognized [self = 0xf0000]

After generating those messages, voodoopadPro ran, but it didn't load
my previous workspace. When I attempted to manually load an old pad,
I got repeated messages of the form
2007-05-22 10:24:58.887 VoodooPad Pro[968] *** -[NSCFString
keyEnumerator]: selector not recognized [self = 0xf0000]

   I know that this isn't all that helpful, but it seems to be quite
reproducible. I've restored the pads from backup and rerun, and
gotten the same error message.
   I'm running OS X 10.4.9 on an 867 MHz G4 12" laptop.
I'm dropping back to VP3.1.5 for now.
      David

I've gotten a couple more bugs fixed before this goes final. The
first one was causing quite a bit of headaches for some folks:

- Fixed a crashing bug that showed up in earlier beta builds when
"underline links" was turned off.
- Fixed a problem where internal links with x-voodoopad-item: were
not converted properly for web export.

You can either use "Check For New Version" under the VoodooPad Menu,
or use the following links:

http://flyingmeat.com/download/VoodooPad-3.2b3.zip
http://flyingmeat.com/download/VoodooPadPro-3.2b3.zip
http://flyingmeat.com/download/VoodooPadLite-3.2b3.zip

Don't forget to backup your documents! (new app idea for me to do-
AutomagicalVoodooPadBackup.app)

let me know if you run into any issues,

Ok, this is cosmetic.

The chance to see a preview of the page on roll-over internal links
with apple key, can it be transfered to Control key? I am used to save
often (apple key + S) due to too much use of MS Word, and I am
constantly seeing page previews in a non intended way while typing on
VoodooPad. Also, can that preview window be made a bit larger?

Thanks

Stay Well

I've changed the keybinding to command-control for b4, since other
folks were complaining of this as well.

Yea, I suppose the preview window could be made bigger- but I'd like
to hear other folks' thoughts on that as well. Does anyone else
think it's too small?

I don't mind the keybinding the way it is now, but I would like a bit bigger
preview
window. It only shows the first line or two of a window. I always have links to
other pages
on these first few lines of each page and would like to see a few more lines to
view what is
actually in the page. Also: if the link to a page is on the extreme left of the
current page
the preview pops up on the extreme left and only shows a portion of the preview,
i.e. it
cuts off the left portion of the preview...sometimes drastically!

Thanks for your fabulous work and continued diligence in making this a premier
app for
Mac!

Suggestion: If the user holds the combination hover over the link for 5+
seconds the make the preview larger.

Another week, another beta build. Hopefully this will also be the
final candidate.

Here's what is new in 3.2 beta 4:

[VP+] Made the page preview window slightly larger.
[VPL+] Fixed a bug which showed up in previous betas, where using
lists would sometimes change fonts.
[VP+] Changed the menu "Copy link to item" to "Copy link to 'Whatever
Page You Have Open'.
[VP+] Fixed a bug where you couldn't unlink the last word in a page.
[VPL+] Exporting as RTFD, Text, or Word now includes embeded files.
[VP+] Fixed a bug where you could drag and drop images into a text-
only page, and have it pasted in.
[VP+] Changed the behavior for the page preview from just the command
key, to control-command. The previous behavior caused too many
instances of it coming up when you probbly didn't want it (such as
copying or pasting text).
[VPL+] Added another case to look for when adding file urls with
accented characters in the name.
[VPL+] Fixed the intro window so it shows 3.2 instead of 3.1 in the
title.

You can grab the betas from here:

http://flyingmeat.com/download/VoodooPad-3.2b4.zip
http://flyingmeat.com/download/VoodooPadPro-3.2b4.zip
http://flyingmeat.com/download/VoodooPadLite-3.2b4.zip

Or use the update feature in VP (it should check on launch).

Let me know if you run into any issues, and don't forget to backup
your documents before trying any new build!

thanks,

Hmmm...

when I press Control + Command + J ("New Page With Current Date") the linked
page
doesn't display the variable $fromPage$ (I have it in my newpagetemplate)

However, if I use the menu item (Plugin » New Page With Current Date) it works
ok...

I use it regularly (I keep my diary in VoodooPad :) and hate using the mouse
when
writing... not a showstopper, but it would be nice if you could look into it.

I'm using VoodooPad 3.2b4 1230, but the bug has been there for (at least) a
couple
releases.

Thanks in advance!

Hola! VoodooPad 3.2 has been released. Here's the complete change
notes since the last release (3.1.5):

[VP+] Made the page preview window slightly larger.
[VPL+] Fixed a bug which showed up in previous betas, where using
lists would sometimes change fonts.
[VP+] Changed the menu "Copy link to item" to "Copy link to 'Whatever
Page You Have Open'.
[VP+] Fixed a bug where you couldn't unlink the last word in a page.
[VPL+] Exporting as RTFD, Text, or Word now includes embedded files.
[VP+] Fixed a bug where you could drag and drop images into a text-
only page, and have it pasted in.
[VP+] Changed the behavior for the page preview from just the command
key, to control-command. The previous behavior caused too many
instances of it coming up when you probably didn't want it (such as
copying or pasting text).
[VPL+] Added another case to look for when adding file urls with
accented characters in the name.
[VPL+] Fixed the intro window so it shows 3.2 instead of 3.1 in the
title.
[VP+] Fixed a problem where internal links with x-voodoopad-item:
were not converted properly for web export.
[VPL+] Fixed a crashing bug that showed up in earlier beta builds
when "underline links" was turned off.
[VPL+] New "Reveal in Finder" menu item when you right click on a
file alias link.
[VP+] Updated and corrected documentation.
[VP+] Fixed a bug where the Record Audio plugin would try and insert
an empty recording if you hit the OK button without recording first.
[VP+] View categories as tags. Use the cog-widget in the categories
list to change the view as "tags".
[VP+] Holding down the command and control keys while hovering over
an internal VoodooPad link gives you a preview of the page.
[VPL+] Improved searches (your document will take a little bit longer
to open up the first time with this new release).
[VPL+] Fixed a problem where the file and urls list in the document
inspector doesn't update correctly when a new file is added to a
document when VoodooPad is in the background.
[VPL+] Displaying a warning now when VoodooPad can not open a
document because of a permission error.
[VP+] Fixed a re-encryption problem that cropped up in 3.1.5.
[VPL+] Fixed a problem with the back/forward menu items.
[VP+] You can now drag and drop a tab from one document, to another's
text widget and it'll link up.
[VP+] New command- Edit->Copy Link to Item, which will copy text
to the clipboard which you can use to link to the specific page.
Should work for any applications that respect the NSLink attribute in
rich text.
[VP+] New command to "Link to specific page" using the x-voodoopad-
item: protocol, which does not require an alias. Select some text
and go.
[VPL+] The markup engine no longer trashes custom NSLink attributes.
[VPL+] Fixed a long standing bug where a deleted page wasn't
correctly removed from the back/forward stack.
[VPL+] You can now view embedded web archives.
[VPL+] Now using Sparkle for auto updates.

You can download this release in all 3 flavors from the website:
http://www.flyingmeat.com/

Let me know if you run into any issues, and don't forget to backup
your documents!

Dear VoodooPad mavens,

I've recently started using VoodooPad Lite (VPL). I'm a
freelance writer and I wanted some type of program to store
information for the books I'm writing - in particular background
information on a world I'm building for an SF novel. The ability
to have links between pages is essential for this. Pre OS X I'd
have used a Hypercard stack, but VPL does a superb job. Many
congratulations on such an excellent product.

Just a couple of questions, though:

1. I have the latest build of VPL - so why does it take me to
the VP web page when I click the "update" button as though there
were an update?

2. Is there a facility to create extra keyboard short cuts? I
ask because I have severe arthritis affecting my hands, which
means I have to operate my computer by voice. I have created
commands to operate most of the existing short cuts. In
particular I'd love a way to follow a link without having to put
the mouse pointer on it and click. If that means I have to buy
one of the paid versions then I will.

Talking of links, is there any way to designate a specific use
of a word as "not a link"? For example, in my SF world "light"
is the equivalent of "week" but when I write "in the evening, as
the light fades" I'd rather the word ''light" wasn't marked as a
link - but there are other words on that page which I do want to
be links.

Cheers,

Dave Smith

#2: There is a pane in Preferences to change keyboard commands, but these
only cover commands in the menus, and there is no command for "jump to next
link."

Possible options:
- Use Apple's built-in accessibility (Universal Access, in System Prefs).
This should let you jump around a document via keyboard, but I'm not sure
how well it works with VoodooPad, or with text links in non-browser
applications. At the very least, you could use Mouse Keys, which lets you
move and click the mouse with the numeric keypad ("Mouse" pane of Universal
Access prefs)
- It's conceivable that you might write, or get someone to write, a Lua
plugin that jumps to the next link and follows it.
- Ask Gus nicely to add add keyboard access in a future version. If that
happens, I think you'd be obliged to upgrade though :)

corner..)
That's a gimmick to try and get you to check out the non-free version
of voodoopad. "Upgrade to the real thing" :)

> 2. Is there a facility to create extra keyboard short cuts?

The full version has a preferences pane to do this. You can also do
it via the Keyboard and Mouse System Preferences with a little more
work.

If you have the insertion on a link, cmd-L will open it up just like
making a link.

The full version also has an unlink command- you just select the word
and then choose Edit->Unlink.

You can grab the full version of VP and try these things out without
worrying about going back to Lite if you don't like it. The file
formats are compatible with each other.

the pike every month or so, even when Gus says he is concentrating on a
new product. I have a license for home and one for work. Buy it, and then
pressure Gus to give you what you need !

Would it be possible to have a preference option to the page previews show
up when you hover over a link, rather than having to remember cntrl +
command?

This seems like it's something that would get old pretty quick, so
I've made it a hidden pref :)

To enable it in the upcoming 3.2.1 release, paste this in terminal:

defaults write com.flyingmeat.VoodooPad_Pro alwaysShowPreview 1
defaults write com.flyingmeat.VoodooPad alwaysShowPreview 1

Substitute 0 instead of 1 to turn it off.

thanks,

Ask and it shall be given to you. Thanks Gus. I let you know how old it
gets -- if there was a one second lull (hover for a second and the link
comes up) this shouldn't cause much frustration. It is a little like title
  popups in Web pages, either you like them or you don't.

I just bought the pro version of VoodooPad. (Outstanding in every way). I have
two
questions:

1. Is there any way to make the font used in the palettes larger? I find them
hard to read
right now.

2. Are there examples of the way other users have designed and used VoodooPad?
It would
be nice to see some examples of well developed VoodooPads.

Yea- open up the Appearance prefs in VP, and it's the second font
option near the top.

About the only think I can think of is this forum thread:

That was pretty obvious. I should have read more carefully.

I take a look at the forum for design hints.

Thanks you,

I am using Voodoopad on an intel mac running 10.4.9; during the
summer, i will be using an emac running 10.3.9. If I burn some
voodoopad pages to a CD from my intel imac, will I be able to open
them on the panther system?

Last summer, I tried to bring pages from the panther system to the
tiger on a flash disk, but they wouldn't open.

Would they work if I upload them to my iDisk, and then download them
to the machine running panther?

I really love your program.

Thanks

So the problem isn't so much the OS version, but the version of VP
that you are using.

If you want to be able to use VP on both 10.4 and 10.3, and share a
document between the two, you'll have to use VoodooPad 2.5.5 which
you can get from here:
http://flyingmeat.com/fs/flystashweb.cgi/28fc7dd0-f3e0-01d9-0161-
c0cbe4c49a7b

Since VoodooPad 3.0 only runs on 10.4 and it uses a new file
format... it's not really an option if you want to go back to 10.3.

Hope that helps, and let me know if you need more clarification.

thanks,

I use categories quite heavily and keep the categories drawer open
most of the time, opening and closing categories to find filed pages.

Trouble is that I sometimes fail to categorise a page, so apart from
any links to it, and barring a specific search, it disappears from my
usual reference point.

Ideally, it'd be nice to have a default 'uncategorised' category I
could check for orphans from time to time. Until then it seemed the
sort of thing a quick lua script would manage - list all pages'
categories, then refine it to listing pages without categories.

I've got halfway there with a cut'n'paste, monkey-see, monkey-do
bodgejob based on the various example scripts and a rather baffled
scroll through the VPPlugin.h.

-- list pages' categories
vpconsole("==== start")
for key in objc.values(document:keys()) do
    page = document:pageForKey(key)
    if page:type() == VPPageType then
-- how do I test on page:categories() table contents?
      vpconsole(page:uuid() .. " " .. page:displayName())
      vpconsole(page:categories())
-- how do I get the category names?
    end
end
vpconsole("==== end")

As you can see from the comments there're a couple of sticking points:

If I'm reading the error messages right page:categories() is a table
or array, confirmed by the header file - I can't work out how to test
this for being empty. I'd guessed at

if page:categories() == nil then

but not so. Help?

As to getting category names - not necessary for my end task, but
interesting along the way - I see in VPPlugin.h:

// get the name for a given category id.
- (NSString*) nameForCategoryId:(NSString*)categoryId;

but how does that translate into something I'd call in lua?

Pointers to relevant examples or tutorials much appreciated

Meanwhile, running the script as-is found 20+ 'lost' pages (out of
just under 300) so it has been a worthwhile exercise even if I don't
make it any further.

Cheers

If you get this working, please share it with the list. That would
be a huge boon. Next we need the same feature for iCal...

To test the length of an array, you want to call :count() on it.
Below I do "if page:categories():count() == 0 then" to test if the
array is empty.

Here's the completed script:

noCategories = ""

for key in objc.values(document:keys()) do
     page = document:pageForKey(key)
     if page:type() == VPPageType then

       if page:categories():count() == 0 then
          noCategories = noCategories .. page:displayName() .. "\n"
       else

          -- get the list of category ids in the page
          for categoryId in objc.values(page:categories()) do

              categoryName = document:nameForCategoryId(categoryId)

              vpconsole(page:displayName() .. " is in " .. categoryName)

          end
       end
     end
end

vpconsole("The pages with no categories:")
vpconsole(noCategories)

I can't remember when I put this in, but if you're writing triggers
you might find it helpful.

If you create a meta keya of "_vp.luaSyntax" on a page, you'll get
highlighting for certain lua keywords. It doesn't do much, but it
does help with flow a little bit. Here's a pic:

As for full syntax highlighting, that's what "Edit in BBEdit/TextMate/
SubEthaEdit" is for :)

Subject: Right Margin Adjust

I have been using VP for quite a while, mostly for taking notes for research
projects, so text-
manipulation features are important to me. One feature (problem?), which has
been present
since at least 2.5, is increasingly causing me frustration: when I select all
the text on a page
and adjust the right margin, all line indentations disappear (on the left). I
have a new iMac
with a wider screen, and I would like the right margin of the text to extend all
the way to the
limit of the screen, especially in full-screen mode. But I can't do this without
losing the
hierarchical line indentations I uses to organize relative precedence of ideas.
(Actually, I
would like to eliminate the right margin altogether so that the lines extend to
the maxim
length possible regardless of how large the VP window.)
