Back in the days when Vue D'Esprit
was still shareware(!), this little
image was included with the files:

This should give you a pretty good
idea of how to proceed when creating
a greyscale image as the basis for a
canyon-like structure.

Just load it up, and weather it to
taste ;)

I created in one of the earliest
versions of Vue D'Esprit, using
