Doesn’t really qualify as a web analytics issue directly, however it seems pretty clear that this was a careless handling of some pretty sensitive data. If it were possible to completely anonymize the data perhaps it would be ok, but I don’t think the technology exists that could ensure that all the personal references are taken out.
It is certainly a huge faux pas by AOL to not review this data before releasing it. As for the related issue of all of these search engines releasing this data along with PII (in cases where they have it like AOL) or IP address. I’m curious to everyone’s thoughts on that. Where does the group sit on the balance of security vs privacy and is it alright for the government to have this data?
