Subject: [CDT Supporters] Complaint to FTC on Behavioral Targeting
Dear CDT supporters:
Last week, a group called the Center for Digital Democracy ("CDD")
joined with the U.S. Public Interest Research Group("PIRG") to file
a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission calling for an
investigation into the "behavioral targeting " practices of a number
of major Internet companies.
I want to clarify that the Center for Democracy & Technology is not
associated in any way with the complaint. Some of our colleagues,
understandably confused by the similarity between our name and that
of the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD), have asked us about our
involvement with the complaint. Matters were further confused when a
popular news site mentioned CDT's name in a story about the report.
We are reviewing the complaint and do have questions about the
accuracy of some of the specific allegations. We do however believe
that the advent of more sophisticated behavioral targeting
techniques is an area of growing concern for consumers. Practices
have changed dramatically since the FTC last had workshops on the
topic, and we would support another set of workshops on the
subject. CDT is also interested in convening a group to discuss best
practices in this rapidly developing area.
We look forward to working with you all on these emerging privacy challenges.
