We have been laying low for the past few years and are starting to become

BTW, 1982 is a pretty long time. This is the equivalent of a
centuries-old conspiracy in internet years. Can you tell us more about
the history of the group?
Interests are encryption and Artificial Intelligence amongst other things, cant claim to be an expert.
Thanks !

Copy the public key from HERE, and add it to your WASTE.
Then, post YOUR own public key HERE. After you got added, you can connect.
I hope I didn't misunderstand you.
PS.: The gnet host is very good, I often use it to connect instantly :)

so what is the default key (public+private) ?
Also, which version is everyone using? The last 1.5 beta, or the
unofficial 1.6?

Agreed - it should be possible to exchange just the key fingerprint
instead of the whole key. When you connect to the peer you can download
the key and check it matches the fingerprint before proceeding.
> Maybe we could have an alternate waste without keys, or with default keys?
Not sure I agree with this - default keys would harm security, but it's
possible to be secure without intimidating new users.
It would be useful if the software displayed a short string containing
the IP address, port and key fingerprint - something like
123.45.67.8:1234/jdhfg3q247ogk43ugi3qgb984h - that would contain
everything your friends needed to connect to your peer.

I think, the way WASTE is currently made, it can be difficult to get

I'm still part of a WASTE network group and run a webserver/WASTEsrv
right now I'm having server problems but he usual URL is
http://wkclx.net/ or http://waste.wkclx.net/ for the forums and the
default port if your trying to connect to WASTE specifically.

Hi Lucas,
It's certainly interesting to see this area taking off at last (six
years after Aimster?). I'm working on a paper that tries to classify
some of the existing F2F/darknet systems architecturally, and so far
I've come up with three main axes:
* One big network vs many small networks. For example Freenet 0.7 builds
a global DHT from friend-to-friend connections, whereas WASTE allows any
number of isolated networks. (Can a user who's a member of two WASTE
networks forward traffic between them?)
Issues: network partitions, scalability, correlated downtime, finding a
member of the big network vs starting your own network, merging/bridging
mature networks, mapping the network via traffic analysis.
* Friend-to-friend vs invitation-only. Once you've joined the network,
can you see/connect to everyone in the network or only your friends?
Issues: presence (including address harvesting, intersection attacks),
identity management (including naming, key exchange, eviction),
NAT/firewall traversal.
* Centralised vs decentralised: the conventional wisdom is that
centralised P2P networks are fragile, but does this apply in F2F where
the server can be more or less hidden, or the server can be public but
the users can be hidden in private groups?
Issues: denial of service, presence, identity management, NAT/firewall
traversal.
Any other thoughts?
Cheers,
Michael

It's fascinating to see the evolution of this space.
This bit from the documentation fires my imagination:
"Friend-to-Friend Instant Messengers have a more stable structure of
connections to trusted persons, so even if one is offline, he can later
rezume from a trusted neighbour."
...these friend to friend networks have very different properties than
gnutella-inspired networks where the human connections are as transient as
people you see at a highway rest stop. The pace of topological change is
slow and deliberate. The amount of work that a 1-1 connection achieves is
greater. The likelihood of sudden breakage is lower.
Any thoughts on other things that are different?
Hi, a second serverless Instant Messenger (a kind of a Waste.sf.net network)
next to www.cspace.in is out, this one has enhanced filesharing capabilities and
is working on to get Turtle F2F Hopping (gnutella-giFT) implemented, which is
really anonymous and secure for downloading.

Have a look and test the network.

Yes, we are, but there's a lot of confusion around, with forks of
clients incompatible with each other, small unstable networks, and what
not.
We need to clean things up, so we can have a good time with waste :)
