Any thoughts? Anyone else interested in doing this?

I am very please to announce that the first meeting of the Austin Watir Users Group will be Wednesday, March 19. We've been working for some time with several people and companies to make this happen.
KEYWORD DRIVEN TESTING WITH RASTA, HUGH MCGOWAN, CONVIO
Hugh McGowan is presenting his work on Rasta (http://rasta.rubyforge.org) a framework for building keyword-driven tests using Ruby and Excel. This open-source framework fills an
important gap for the many testers who are looking for a way to easily put their Watir tests into spreadsheets.
SPONSORS
TestCo is providing food and Uplogix is providing beverages. If you are planning to attend, please RSVP to Brent Lavelle brentlavelle@... so we can have an accurate head count when we order the pizza.

AUSTIN WATIR USERS GROUP
We will be planning additional meetings of the Austin Watir Users Group. To receive future announcements, please subscribe to watir-austin@yahoogroups.com
This is great. I've been working with both Brent and Hugh to prepare for this event and am thrilled that Uplogix and TestCo stepped up to help make this happen. I'll be there for sure.

I'd been thinking that there would likely be meeting rooms at a public library
that we could use. I finally took the time to look around, and it turns out
that all of the Austin public libraries have meeting rooms, although we'd have
to do a little more work to find out how available they are. I'm willing to
make some calls if there is interest.

Hi,
I just wanted to chime in and say that I would be very interested in
participating in Watir users group here in Austin. I've just started
using Watir, and I'm very impressed with it.
I would certainly love to hear more and meet other users.
Unfortunately I don't really know offhand where we could meet, but
I'll give it some thought and let you guys know if I come up with
anything.
Brian
If you are trying to get a count to gauge interest, I would probably show up for the initial meeting and occasionally after. I am not an active Watir user, but am interested in following it and seeing how others are using it. I would definitely be interested in a Saturday workshop and could hopefully generate some interest in it from my test organization at work.
I would be more inclined to having a meeting on a Saturday if it was less infrequent- perhaps every 3 months. I think this would draw more people and we may a better chance at getting a larger facility.
Cheers,
Jason

I don't know if we'll get the crowd that Agile Austin did last month
for their first meeting, but from what I've been hearing in talking to
other testers, I wouldn't be surprised by a turnout of 30-50 for this.
Yesterday, my project manager pulled me aside because she'd heard me
talking about Watir at lunch. She is interested in learning more
about Watir and attending the AWUG meeting.
Does anyone have space for 50? If not, where do technical interest
groups meet in town, and do we have a chance of meeting there:
* Agile Austin/ADNUG - Microsoft
* A-SPIN - IBM (previously Dell)
* Saturday events - St Edwards
What are we looking for in terms of space? I'm guessing wireless
would be nice. Do we need tables? Do we want theater/classroom style
seating? White boards? Projector? Microphone?

Being from Dallas may I suggest you meet on Saturday or Friday night so I can drive there (3 hours) and spend some time learning from gurus....
Another possibility, probably in addition to the user group idea, would be to hold a one-day workshop on a Saturday. There is a testing group in Indianapolis that regularly does this.

This can work as long as we don't have much more that 8 people. I
suspect we'll get more than that, although to some degree it depends
on how many people respond to this thread.
What I'd like to do is create a program that would motivate Watir
users to turn out.

Where do we meet? If people are interested in down town Austin I could see
if Uplogix will host this. I would hope the meeting would attract more
people that can fit in our big meeting room. It will fit 10 around the
table and another 5-8 people.

I thought you were in Austin Texas. The list you found is for Watrir users who reside in/near Austin. I suggest going to the http://groups.google.com/group/watir-general list. This is a list for everyone, and you will see that there is a large user base in India. I also strongly suggest searching first, as I am sure many of your questions have already been answered by previous new users.
Also, I see there was a typo in the address I gave you- it is http://wtr.rubyforge.org/. As I stated below, go through the examples there. If you have questions at that time, go ahead and post them to the Watir general list.
Unfortunately, it is no encouraged to have offline discussions, as the purpose of the group is to disseminate the knowledge out to the community. I am on the Watir General list and myself or another member may assist you with your questions, should you not find answers.

Greetings Austin Railers!
This month, we're going to do a block of member lightning talks again and they are going to be beginner focused. If you have no interest in these intro topics, feel free to come at 8. We will do
a door check. Everyone is certainly welcome for the entire program!
We are going to call the appetizer of the evening:
"If I Met A NEWB On The Street, What Would We Talk About?"
Introductory Lightning Talks:
* Creating a Rails Project in SVN and Setting Up Capistrano (Steve Odom) * Controllers and Views: What's the Deal? (Edward Cruz) * The Basics of Active Record (Mars Hall) * Getting Started with Rails Migrations (Damon Clinkscales)
* Intro to irb and console (Damon Clinkscales) * Rails Security Tip: CSRF & CSRFkiller (Tom Brown)
For the second slot of the evening, we are very fortunate to have Bret Pettichord, a testing expert who has recently returned to Austin, speak
to us about Watir. Watir is written in Ruby and is one of the more popular Ruby libraries. It was actually written before Rails and was designed to be a general-purpose testing tool, suitable for web applications regardless of implementation technology.
Bret will be presenting a Watir demo that is based on the Depot Rails application developed in the Agile Rails book and describing how you can use Watir with Rails apps.
Bret Pettichord has been programming in Ruby since 2003. He is the lead
developer of the Watir testing tool and the test architect at Dovetail. Since 2000, he has hosted the Austin Workshop on Test Automation . He is also co-author of Lessons Learned in Software Testing, a Jolt-award
finalist.
We look forward to seeing you there. The meeting is at Frog Design and 8th and Congress on July 17th from 7-9 PM. We will do a door check at the 8:00 break. "Beverages and What Not" to follow after the meeting Hickory
Street Grill. _______________________________________________ austinonrails mailing list austinonrails@...

This is a follow-up regarding the Ruby Conference.
I did submit a proposal to do a talk about how to use Watir with Rspec, but it was not accepted for the conference. They actually have a pretty strong program -- which is good for us -- so I was up against some strong competition. In fact, the lead developer of Rspec will be coming down from Chicago to give a talk on Rspec.
However, they did ask me to give a short introduction to developers on how to test their code. I will be using Rspec (but not Watir) for that presentation. This will be on the Thursday before the confence -- kind of a tutorial to help people who are new to Ruby.
I'll probably propose something -- haven't thought much about it yet
(i know the deadline approaches).
But i would rather let other people talk about Watir or whatever, so
let's coordinate submissions, but please know that i am happy to defer
to others.
My view is that your proposal is something that would take 2 to 3
hours, so i suggest narrowing it somewhat.
One thought would be for us to try and propose a series or two or
three related talks, perhaps all of which used the same (depot) test
application and built on what others demonstrated in previous talks.
I'll think more about this this weekend.

I don't know if I 'should' but speaking on testing topics is one of my
goals that I want to get going on this year.
I want to talk about going from using Watir to go from test assistance to
full automation. Demonstrate a script that is just that a script of how to
test something then showing how the different parts are all pushed together
(testcase, interface to the application, and test accounting (like RSpec))
and how to pull the three parts apart finally ending up with a 'best

Any thoughts? Anyone else interested in doing this?
