I've changed the subject line to Central Market, because I know they have seating that will work.
But because Brian expressed interest in a downtown meeting, I will do that the next time. I need help finding a suitable location, however, as i don't eat lunch down there much. Any suggestions?
But next week we will be at HEB Central market on Lamar and 45th.

Actually either place could work well for me. But I am wondering whether Whole Foods has enough seating. My recollection is that it gets very crowded there at lunch.

I'd like to suggest that we have another group lunch for

from Wednesday at Whole Foods on N. Lamar. Usually we've met upstairs out on
the patio, but I'm wondering if it is getting too hot these days for that?

Sorry for the short notice again, but we are having another meeting.
Jim Matthews will be speaking about his link checker. He needed a script that
would crawl a website looking for certain special conditions. He started using
Ruby and Watir then ended up building a script that used Ruby, Watir, and Mysql.
Jim will discuss the problems encountered and the evolution to the final
incarnation of the script.
Watircraft will be the sponsor so we will have something to eat.
Jim Matthews has been doing automated software testing for over seventeen years.
He has used a number of commercial test automation tools and developed his own
to fill in gaps. Jim has worked on large waterfall projects and in small
start-up companies. Currently he works in Agile software development
environments, developing tests for web sites using Ruby and Watir.
You can start arrive between 6:15 and 7:00 on Wednesday 21-May to talk with
other Watir users and get something to eat before Jim makes his presentation.
The meeting will be held at Uplogix's office on 360 between 2222 and Spicewood

Here ya go...
http://www.testmanagement.com/
My contact over there is Bill Echlin
(william.echlin@...)
Bill is in pre-sales/sales and seems to have a good
technical grasp of the tool as well as having a good
handle on their business initiatives. They are really
focused on training nowadays.
I helped them work through the early "pro" version
kinks so he will probably remember me from my bugs ;)
There are still some things that are a little wonky
about it (like it's 100% search-based). But the new
SOAP API is a very nice edition to the pro feature
set.
Hope this helps-

Last month, Hugh McGowan gave a great presentation of Rasta, an open-source testing tool that can be used with Watir. You can find out more about it at http://rasta.rubyforge.org.
I've also written a short review of it. Hugh's asked to hold off publishing this to my blog while he gets a new version of Rasta out this week. In the meantime, i'll post the review here. It's not that easy to stop me from talking about Rasta!
----
Rasta is a data-driven testing framework that pulls data out of Excel spreadsheets and executes it using simple "fixtures" that you write in Ruby. Your fixture methods could use Watir or another Ruby-based library
(Selenium-RC, Mechanize, SOAP) to execute against the target application.
There are several things that I think are simply terrific about Rasta. The most dramatic feature is that the spreadsheet is annotated
in real-time as the tests execute. Each cell is colored red or green to indicate whether that step passed. If there are errors, they are attached to the cell as a comment that appears when you hover over it.
There are a lot of data-driven testing frameworks that work off of tables these days. Most use wiki's to create the tables, which feels somewhat barbaric. Rasta allows you to use a spreadsheet instead.
Another great thing about Rasta is that it allows test cases to be
defined either horizontally or vertically. I've noticed that most data-driven frameworks (Fit, TestFrame, Certify, QTP) specify test cases horizontally. However, most testers, if they are starting from scratch will organize their test matrices vertically. I'm sure there
is some psychological reason for this. In any case, Rasta allows you to organize your tests either way. To me this is simply a great of example of how test tools should be adapted to the way tester's think rather than the other way around.
Right now, Rasta only supports Excel, but the developers are working on adding support for Open Office. They've put together a great website, with screen shots and examples. It really gives a much better
impression of what the tool is like than I can convey here.
There has been a lot of discussion in the Watir community about data-driven testing frameworks. Any one interested really should give Rasta a look. It is simple, effective, and fun.

I don't know if I 'should' but speaking on testing topics is one of my
goals that I want to get going on this year.
I want to talk about going from using Watir to go from test assistance to
full automation. Demonstrate a script that is just that a script of how to
test something then showing how the different parts are all pushed together
(testcase, interface to the application, and test accounting (like RSpec))
and how to pull the three parts apart finally ending up with a 'best
practices' approach to organizing automated web application testing.
Any thoughts? Anyone else interested in doing this?

I am very please to announce that the first meeting of the Austin Watir Users Group will be Wednesday, March 19. We've been working for some time with several people and companies to make this happen.
KEYWORD DRIVEN TESTING WITH RASTA, HUGH MCGOWAN, CONVIO
Hugh McGowan is presenting his work on Rasta (http://rasta.rubyforge.org) a framework for building keyword-driven tests using Ruby and Excel. This open-source framework fills an
important gap for the many testers who are looking for a way to easily put their Watir tests into spreadsheets.

TestCo is providing food and Uplogix is providing beverages. If you are planning to attend, please RSVP to Brent Lavelle brentlavelle@... so we can have an accurate head count when we order the pizza.

I'd been thinking that there would likely be meeting rooms at a public library
that we could use. I finally took the time to look around, and it turns out
that all of the Austin public libraries have meeting rooms, although we'd have
to do a little more work to find out how available they are. I'm willing to
make some calls if there is interest.

Hi,
I just wanted to chime in and say that I would be very interested in
participating in Watir users group here in Austin. I've just started
using Watir, and I'm very impressed with it.
I would certainly love to hear more and meet other users.
Unfortunately I don't really know offhand where we could meet, but
I'll give it some thought and let you guys know if I come up with
anything.
Brian
If you are trying to get a count to gauge interest, I would probably show up for the initial meeting and occasionally after. I am not an active Watir user, but am interested in following it and seeing how others are using it. I would definitely be interested in a Saturday workshop and could hopefully generate some interest in it from my test organization at work.
