do you know where there is an extra copy of the tutorial. The only reason I
am asking for all of this is that I am about to purchase the program and I
want to get comfortable with it before I buy it. I am basically going to use
this software for animated golf course designs. And if there is a tutorial
that I can work with while I have the demo version like the one that is with
it already. The software doesn't seem too hard to learn, but I know it is
difficult to do these types of animations. Thanks for all your help.

Ryan

There was also a tutorial in issue number 43 of 3D Artist Magazine that
is based on one hole of a golf course. This was written by none other
than Scott Cherba!

The best suggestion that I can make is to go to the 3D Artist web page
and see if you can order a back issue of the magazine.

So far everything everyone is telling me is helping me out tremendously.
Thanks for everyones help. I do have one more question. WCS is good in
giving the 3D look, but does anyone know of any place or company that has
done a animated golf course hole. One of the questions I have is that I know
WCS uses photos of trees for the foliage, but what happens when you fly by
a 2D photo. Does it trick the eye into thinking it is a full 3 dimensional
tree? Does anyone out there have a avi of a course that they animated using
WCS? I just want to be real positive that this is the program to get for
this particular purpose before I buy it. Do the 2d photos of the trees cast
raytrace shadows on the ground? The movie can have the company's logo on it,
I just want to see what it will look like moving around. All I have found is
stills of the courses. None that move. Does WCS renderer render fast for
scenes like these? I hope to hear from someone soon.

Thanks for everything,
Ryan

Image Object trees always face the camera. They are 3D-shaded based
on lighting so they look three dimensional. They render very fast
and it's easy to create your own custom foliage from any photograph.
Image Object trees generally look fine in flyby animations.

If you fly around a tree, you'll likely notice that it's turning to
face you. In that case you should probably use a 3D object for a
tree.

There are a variety of quicktime animations on the WCS web site.
Click the Animations link on the left to get to that page. Click the
thumbnails to take a look at some of them. There are several
animated golf course shots on the WCS demo tape but I don't think
those animations are on the web site.

  -Jamie

I have looked at the avi's on the site, but I am specifically looking for a

work for a company that does these types of animations. I want my

Yup, youre right. I tried reinstalling three times. Nothing improved. So Ill

And wait for that update. *chuckle*

Thanks for eveyones help. I do hope either the memory or upcoming release

Roundabout way:

In Database, try "Search..." and put in some string that doesn't occur in any of
your
objects (eg, "xx23yy"). This deselects any objects that don't match the search
string, but curiously leaves one of the previously selected objects as the
active
object. Seems like the DB has to have one of its objects as the "displayed"
(not
necessarily selected or active) object. This is confirmed by the Layers and
Attached
Components part of the DB.

Just curious: why do you need to deselect all objects?

Cheers,
Zack

Scott,

Have you ever been able to deselect all objects from the database so its title
reads
"Database 0 of xx objects selected"?

I am presuming that's the gist of Martin's question...

No, Zack, never figured that one out. At the very least the DB always
seems to default to the first item. Have to admit I've never felt the
need ;)

I just started a new project, and just to get an overview I only loaded two
dozens of DEMs. Everything is deselected, i.e. there's no yellow overlay in
your views, until you open the Database and select one of the DEMs (e.g. to
rename them). From then on you always have one of the DEMs
selected/yellowed, so I created a dummie vector and selected it to get rid
of the yellow.
I know that this project situation (just DEMs) is a bit unusual and I agree
with Scott that I've never felt the need to deselect all items before. As I
said, I was just curious ;)

Thanks anyway

Hi Martin,

As you discovered, the active item shows up in yellow in views. With
DEMs, this comes in very handy when disabling them or figuring out which
one(s) you need to interpolate. Selecting a new item (an existing camera
works well) will deselect the DEM without having to create a new
Component.

Don't go out spending money on memory , just to cure these crashes . It
won't . Lack of memory will not make WCS crash .

However , memory is cheaper than it's ever been , right now , so if you are
looking
to upgrade, now _might_ be a good time . WCS is very memory efficient , and 128
MB's could easily be enough , depending on what your needs are , or what kind
of projects your are creating/rendering .

I have exported a WCS scene to Lightwave along with a vector that I
want to convert to a .lwo path for rail extrusion. All of the vector

Fredrik,

Are your spikes twice the elevation of the point in the LW model? If so, you
most
likely have coincident vertices in the LW model. You'll need to weld these
vertices
into a single vertex prior to import to WCS or you will see the sum of the
elevations
in the gridded DEM. Welding is a snap (pardon the pun) in 3DS MAX and I presume
it's
just as easy in LW. I have seen this behavior in non-welded models gridded in
WCS.

Cheers,
Zack

Stefan,

The two terraffectors should have the same priority, but the one for the pond
should have a higher evaluation order than the other one. What evaluation order
values are you using?

Cheers,
Zack

Shikota,

I've been using ArcView for the past ten years, and WCS since 2.0. Suffice it
to say
that the interoperability of these two programs is thru file exchange.

ArcView creates/reads/modifies shapefiles which can be imported to WCS along
with
attribute values (as long as they are in decimal degrees or UTM coordinates).

ArcView reads DXF files which can be exported using the Shift+Ctrl+Save DB...
option
in the Database. These decimal degrees DXFs can be converted to Shapefiles in
ArcView and edited as such for reimport into WCS.

ArcView with the Spatial Analyst can produce ASCII or Binary grids that can be
imported into WCS (provided they are in decimal degrees).

Anything else in particular you need to know?

Cheers,
Zack
