Just a quick post to check if the group is still active, I can't see any new
posts in June, the last is the post about a memory issue. Not sure if it might
be some setting that has changed on my profile.

Group's still alive. People just don't seem to be asking a lot of questions.

Thanks Chris,

Another option might be that there is not much projects going on due to the
global economic situation ;-)

Subject: Foliage not displaying in SX

Send Email Send Email

Hi all,

I'm trying to export a project with SX in NV format but the problem is that the
foliage and a foliage FX is not displaying as expected/hoped.

I'm currently exporting a small area of the bigger project just for testing
purposes. Everything seems to export OK - terrain, texture map, foliage, foliage
FX, sky, clouds, 3D objects etc. I can see the foliage images, etc. in the
export folder but it's not displaying when I open the NVE file. I have tried
various settings in the SX exporter but to no avail.

Any suggestions of what can cause this and how to solve this?

The one thing I did notice is that the "xxx_FolRGB" file seems to be either
blank or totally black when viewed in graphics viewer.

I have uploaded a zipfile called "Small area tree test" to the files section in
case it can help to shed some light on the problem.

Hi Chris, yes it is. I've tried various minimum height settings to but still no
joy. I've also set the actual foliage heigt parameter to something ridiculous
like 80m but the foliage still don't show.

The one thing I did see is that the xxx.foliageRGB file is showing some texture,
which it didn't do in the past.

Any other suggestions?

Pierre

Usually anything that shows up in the xxx.foliageRGB image means it is
something that
_didn't_ get put into the actual list of foliage stems.

The foliage stems are stored in a file named something like something_Fol.nvi.
How big
is this file?

What is the maximum number of visible foliage stems set to in the Scene
Exporter?

Ok. It sounds fine. Have you successfully exported other projects? Do any of
the SX
Demo/Tutorial projects export ok?

Yes, I've exported other projects in the past without any problems. I've just
opened an old project and exported a small test area again without any problems.

Ok, try this. Just disable your scene exporter component and make a new one
from
scratch, and carefully set it up again. You might have clicked on something
unintended or
missed something you'll spot the second time around. It sounds like the software
is
working and you're doing things the right way, I'm just guessing it's a simple
mistake.

Which Win7-64 fixes are those Chris?

I am running the latest public release of VNS2 and it still has the
"horizontal button" issue that made it unusable under hat OS in the
first place.

Thanks for this one,but I'd love the same thing to happen for VNS2...

They are in VNS 3. It took us quite a while to bring them back to WCS, and
we're not
planning on bringing them to VNS 2. If you need 64-bit support on Vista/Win7,
use VNS 3.

Has anyone come up with a better solution than I have to this situation?
I am placing a viewpoint (and fitting together multiple 50mm camera
renders to create a 180 degree panorama) very near a electrical utility
line such that the wires appear overhead in the middle of my view.

The wires look strange and not nice and continuous when I fit the
renders together.....I have to fiddle with them in Photoshop and smooth
the connection points manually.

Is the solution to create more cameras so that there is lots of overlap
of camera renders or to use a different camera for rendering? I also
have to keep a consistent render size for these....

If anyone has ideas....I would love to hear alternate suggestions.

Hi Cherilyn,

There's the Panoramic camera option - have you tried that? If that's not
giving the you what you want, have you tried using software for creating
panoramas from multiple pics? The one I have had a lot of success with is
Autopano Pro, which will even dump out a Photoshop file with each photo on a
different layer so it can be tweaked manually afterwards (although I've
never had to do that).

If you don't have software like that and want to try it, you can contact me
directly and I'll be happy to give it a try for you to see if it helps.
They usually just take a few minutes to process.

Cheers,
Drew.

Yeah. It seems like the Panoramic camera should do the trick. You can control
how many
virtual cameras it is built from, and this should reduce the camera-to-camera
distortion.

I tried the 28mm camera option but it didn't improve the view much at
all. The 8mm camera makes the tower look askew. Is there another
panoramic camera I don't have access to that might do the trick?

I don't think I have that in my components list....where might I get
access to that?

Yeah. It seems like the Panoramic camera should do the trick. You can
control how many
virtual cameras it is built from, and this should reduce the
camera-to-camera distortion.

The Panoramic Camera type is an option for the camera itself. It's in the
Options section of the Camera Editor General page. There's a tutorial from
VNS 1/WCS 5 days that is still useful:

It's not a component. Just look at the Camera editor. There's a Panoramic
checkbox.
Somewhere there is a tutorial about using it, but it's pretty straightforward.

Is there any way to set up the Panoramic camera so that it only creates
a 180 pan rather than a full 360?

Hi Cherilyn,

There's the Panoramic camera option - have you tried that? If that's not
giving the you what you want, have you tried using software for creating
panoramas from multiple pics? The one I have had a lot of success with
is
Autopano Pro, which will even dump out a Photoshop file with each photo
on a
different layer so it can be tweaked manually afterwards (although I've
never had to do that).

If you don't have software like that and want to try it, you can contact
me
directly and I'll be happy to give it a try for you to see if it helps.
They usually just take a few minutes to process.

Cheers,
Drew.
