Clients? What do you mean by clients?

Visits _should_ be the number of unique IP addresses accessing your site
which have spent a period of time on your server with a 20 minute (?) idle
period.

Hmmm... Ok now again in english....
A user with the ip address 10.1.1.10 visits your web site. They spend 10
minutes wandering around your site and become idle. When they have been
idle for 20 minutes (I think this is the default in webalizer), that ends
their visit.

If that same user accesses your site after they have been idle for 20
minutes, then that consitutes a new visit.

Make sense? Basically your visits should be pretty high....

Now then, I say _should_ because I don't think the visit counter code is
working correctly in webalizer.... I honestly don't believe that an average
6 visits will access an average 1260 page between them. That's like 210
pages each! Now I know there is a load of information on this particular
site, but I don't really believe that the visitors will access that much
information!

I would believe an average of 20 pages per visit and 60 visitors giving an
average 1200 pages....

Just my 2p

Regards

Stephen

I've noticed that the time on my computer and the time on my IIS5
logs are off by about 4 hours. i.e., if it's 7:00 AM, my log shows
11:00 AM. Any ideas on how to fix this? There don't seem to be any
configurable options for time within IIS itself.

Also - does anyone know of a good HOWTO for setting up reverse DNS
lookup within webalizer?

I don't know how to fix it, but it sounds like your IIS server is logging
the time as GMT instead of Eastern Time (US). A few years back I was using
MS Site Server to analyze my logs, and ran into the same problem. A temp
solution was to change the local time on the server to match GMT. I forget
what we did as a better solution, or if we even found one.

I would really like to know what the exact meanings of each statistic
refers to - I've looked all over the 'net and can't find any
specifics for such things as:

Total URLs
Total URLs By KBytes
Total Entry Pages
Exit Pages
Total Sites
Total Sites By KBytes
Total Referrers, etc.

Thanks.

Hello,

I use Extreme Tracking, the free tracker on 5 pages of my site, www.mahlers.com.  On average I am getting visited 4 to 5 times per day according to Extreme Tracking.  On the other hand, via my webhost, Hostsave.com, Webalizer has reported 50 to 110 hits per day with a total of nearly 32000 hits since the first week of July 2002.  I ask you, why such a tremendous difference?  What does Webalizer do regarding hits that Extreme Tracking doesn't?

Thanks,

William,

Webalizer is basically controlled by it's conf file. I'm not sure what Extreme hits is doing but webalizer tracks the IP address the visitor came from and keeps it on file as it were, for a specified amount of time so that if that person returns it is not recorded as a unique visitor again. I believe the default is 15 minutes but it can be adjusted via conf file to be whatever you or they want in this case.

I am not sure what to tell you as far as the discrepancy in the two goes, but many stats places deal with raw hits without sorting out how many actual unique visits you are getting. This may explain the difference you are seeing. Hits and Visits are two separate things.

Many hit trackers programs do not differentiate either between image files, script files, html files, etc, and count each file accessed as a hit.

These are just a few ideas of mine but if anyone else has any direct insight into this Extreme Hits program, feel free to speak up....lol

Hope this helps,

CorbinB2

Remote 'counters' are not accurate and can easily be circumvented. The
only accurate method to determine web server usage is by using the log
file it generates.

If you have links on the counted pages which someone clicks before Extreme
Tracking counts their visit, then I suspect this could be a cause of the
discrepancy. I also use both and my Webalizer visits are consistently higher
than Extreme Tracking.

Hi Rob,

The default IIS5 logs use Greenish Mean Time instead of the actual time on
your system. If you want the time in your logs matches that of your system,
change your log format to say Microsoft IIS format.

Cheers,

Hi,

I asked a question about a week ago about no stats being shown after I upgraded from V1.3 to V2.01. Now that we're into a new month I can see that Webalizer is no longer working. All my files for September are there but nothing beyond the date that I did the upgrade on my RAQ4.

I'm new to RAQ's and command-line working but I can see that the cron.daily contains the webalizer.pl script. When I run this via telnet I get;

Using logfile STDIN ,clf>
Creating output in current directory
Hostnem for reports is ns.srbookingengine.co.uk
History file not found...

Warning: truncating oversized hostname
Skipping bad record [xx]

As the reports were being run for about 100 sites on the server I'm really keen to get it working again. Could a kind person point me in the right direction. Many thanks to Steven for answering for answering last time...but that didn't seem to be the problem..

Hi all,

I found this group while browsing the net to find a solution to a
strange webalizer problem (webalizer version 2.01.06).

I edited webalizer.conf grouping options and then started webalizer.
Everything went find, but I didn't like the output (somewhere made an
error in the grouping options). I undid the changes and webalizer
gave an error message "Error: Unable to restore run data (10)".

Webalizer won't start anymore, the only thing I get is this annoying
error message. How do I get webalizer working again?

Thanks in advance.

Hi everybody,

I've been using webalizer recently to generate statistics for my customers and I
think
that's a great software. Thanks to the developers of the program.

One think that I would like to do is to generate a total report of all domains
to see an overall traffic.
I have over 500 domains that I produce individiual reports for all my customers
so that they can
track their own traffic. Bu when it comes to me , to track which domain is
generating traffic, my only option
is to visit all some 500 reports page by page. Is it also possible to generate a
"summary of all domains" report
page so that I can compare which domains are creating more traffic and which
not ?

I've searched this mailing list and the documentation within the software but
could not find an answer.
Any suggestions/offers pointing me (I'm a newbie for webalizer) would be greatly
appreciated....

Whenever I start a new site or Webalizer starts compiling a new month, it ignores part of the conf file - namely the Seach Strings. To get it working again, I have to upload a default conf, wait for cronjob, then upload my amended conf. Then it works no problem - until the next month...!!

Does anyone know why this is? Is it a problem in the conf (I don't see how, as it does work eventually), a bug in Webalizer or a problem with my site's hosts executing of the Webalizer? (I don't run Webalizer myself - I only have .conf file access)

hello

only if you use webalizer on Windows :

check number of log file in folder, if you use tag folderlog in
webalizer.conf, folder reading is limited to 250 files, change extension of
somes, and restart webalizer
you can use also "renamelog" for webalizer change extension after process
all a file.

Check your logs for strange characters.

I had the case where someone attempted to find a hole in my apache

with invalid characters (#127, #255, ...).
After deleting these lines in the logs, everything worked fine again...

Hi,

i am processing logfiles from one of our proxies (squid), the logfiles
have about 500 MB daily (daily, yes). As i also process them daily, my
webalizer.current grows and grows and grows. After processing 20 days,
my logfile is nearly 400 MB large and that seems to slow down Webalizer
dramatically.

Processing one logfile takes nearly 2 hours on a dual-prozessor Pentium
III 700 MHz with 4 Gigs of memory, on the first day of the month - with
an empty webalizer.current - it just takes 10 minutes to run.

Any ideas? Would processing of the complete month (no traffic on weekends,
~15 Gig Logfile) be more efficient, when the incremental option is dis-
abled?

However, I am able to process files that are accessed via NFS, going

Im currently dealing with a business that installed a sutom publishing system on their main web server.
The format of the logs are fine, but its the way that the URL format is used by this publishing system that causes me a problem.

What is showed on webalizer is that 90%+ of accessed URL is / (thus, index.pl), which is not true.

How can I ask webalizer, in the config file, to treat any instance of index.pl/* as an actual and valid URL ?

Any help would be appreciated !

Subject: Will Webalyzer work an a Win 200k server?

Hello,
I am the unpaid webmaster for our Boy Scout Troop's website.
Last year we moved from a Unix server to a Win 2000 system.
The Webalyzer we used to use obviously no longer works on our new site

I just found the link that lead me to this site
http://www.medasys-lille.com/webalizer/
Greetings,
I see there is a Webalizer for windows 9x/ME/NT/2k link on a
Webalizer users group listing so I have to assume
that some of you have installed it and used on Win2K systems.

Before I go and try to install it on our site,
What kind of grief am I going to be looking at?

I am looking for a detailed "How to Install" file or a help file,
Is there one available?

The Sysop of our Host site has pretty much told me I am on
my own on this venture as we are on the lowest budget plan
that they have. I did get a note from their "Server Guy' telling me
they do not currently support customer provided/written CGI scripts.
They do support VBScript, JavaScript and PerlScript.

With these restrictions will be able to run Webalizer on our site?

I look forward to any response,
Thank you in advance

Hello

The Windows distribution would run as a single executable file, you
wouldn't really have to do an "install" on the server. you would just
have to get the exe file and your config file uploaded and talk your
hostmaster into running it from the task scheduler or AT on a daily
basis.

However, if your hostmaster won't let you run custom cgi's then they may
not entertain the idea of running webalizer on the server.

The alternative would be to download your log files, run it on your
computer, and upload the resultant reports back to the server.

Actually, if you used something like webdrive (webdrive.com) to remote
connect through ftp, you could likely run this on a schedule from your
own machine.

Anyhow, if you need any help feel free to contact me. I am an Eagle
Scout and don't mind lending a hand.

Best,

Subject: Convlog Utility Failing

When I run the 'convlog' command to convert W3C log files to NCSA, the list
of switches and parameters is displayed, as if I had typed "convlog /?". My
line is written as follows:

convlog -ie %convert%/%logdir% -o %logdir%

It was working before with no problem. The server hadn't been touched in a
couple of days, and when I ran the utility, up pops the list. Can anyone
help on this? Thanks.

Hi all!

Does anybody know, if there is a version of Webalizer for Windows APACHE?

Thanks for your answers!

Best regards
