Hi All,

Thank you for all your generous solutions. Haha.., i am somehow or
rather a IT-literate. Maybe i dont sound like one. But i certainly
know abit. Anyway, the webalizer wasn't started out by me and thus,
i'm not sure of the operations and even the set up of it. And this
is the reason why i have signed up for groups to have my questions
solved by the experts.

As for why i have asked which patches to go for because, its kind of
misleading to me. There it wrote patches and below it, only contains
2 types which is the gz and b2. Naturally, i thought one of those
will work.

Hi Dave, you were saying i might not know how to edit
webalizer.conf. Yes, i agree with you..i do not know why all the
codes and words were all compact together. Is it because i have
opened it using "notepad". Is there any other program that i can use
to open the ".conf" extension?

Will this "Geolizer Win32 binary" overrides all my previous
statistic? Since i only want to configure my country chart, will the
rest be affected too?

Lastly, the instructions help given was to login remotely to turn on
the default configuration for the country chart. Does anyone know
how to do a SSH remote login? or is there a need to login remotely?

Ps. If my questions again, sounded illogical or silly, pardon me.
Thank you.

With Regards,
Swee

Nothing beats learning things on your own.
Read the Webalizer documentation, and setup your
own copy, and get it working. Once you have
done that, you'll probably know enough to either
get your contry stats working, or else be able to
come back to this list with specific questions.

Those are just file extensions, and typically mean
the file(s) are compressed. There are various file
extensions for compressed files(e.g. .zip, .rar, .arc,
.gz, .bz2, etc), just like there are various file
extensions for document files(e.g. .txt, .rtf, .doc, etc).

webalizer.conf is a plain text file, so any decent
text editor will work. If it's "messed up", then
the likely cause is that it may have Unix end-of-line
characters rather than Windows end-of-line character pairs.

>Will this "Geolizer Win32 binary" overrides all my previous

The "binary" is just a program. It doesn't do anything
until you run it, and then it does it's actions based
on how you have configured your webalizer.conf file.

> Since i only want to configure my country chart, will the

Geolizer does more that just create the country chart,
and if you, for example, want country stats for all
of October, you have to re-process all your October
log entries.

Lots of people do.

> or is there a need to login remotely?

No. Edit your webalizer.conf file locally. Transfer
it(e.g. FTP) to the webhost. Run Webalizer.

Hi,

To configure the country chart which is unresolved, isnt it just by
turning on hostname lookups on the web server so that i have
hostnames instead of IP addresses?

You mention two different logfiles. Are you sure you
are using the correct logfile?

The program says:

> Using logfile L:\HTTP\W3SVC3\TEST\ex041006.log

You said:

>logfile location location
> > > c:\winnt\system32\logfiles\w3svc1\

Surely this is not the problem, but when nothing else
works...

Jason,

Below are the entries that I have uncommented and changed from
their defaults. Pay particular attention to the FolderLog setting.

+++++++++++++begin entries++++++++++++++++++++
LogType iis

OutputDir c:\inetpub\wwwroot\webalizer\mysite\

FolderLog C:\winnt\system32\logfiles\w3svc1\

ExtentionLog log
+++++++++++++++end entries++++++++++++++++++++

Also, double check your iis logging properties. I have included my
extended property settings below.

++++++++++++++++++begin iis logging properties++++++++++++++++++++
From the folder that you have extracted the webalizer files to, copy
cygwin1.dll to
c:\winnt\system32\

IIS Logging set to W3C Extended Logging File Format

  Extended Logging Properties:

	 General Properties tab:
Leave the default Log Time Period as "Daily"

	 Extended Properties tab:
Ensure that the following are checked and all others are
unchecked.

		 Date (date)
		 Time (time)
		   Client IP Address (c-ip)
		   User Name (cs-username)
		   URI Stem (cs-uri-stem)
		   Protocol Status (cs-status)
		   User Agent (cs(User-Agent))
		   Referer (cs(Referer))
++++++++++++++++++end iis logging properties++++++++++++++++++++

From the output you've provided, I'm thinking that may do it. Let
us know.

Kevin

No, c:\winnt\system32\logfiles\w3svc1\ is from Kevin's
message - logfile L:\HTTP\W3SVC3\TEST\ex041006.log is
from my message.

this is done one of two ways... either your web server does the reverse lookup
or you /may/ be able to get webalizer to
do it... if the webserver does it, you'll get a mix of domains and IPs in the
logs... many IPs do not rDNS to a
domain... do your logs have any domains listed for the client connections?

what the geolizer stuff does is to tell where the unresolved IPs are
(supposedly) located... it may or may not be
accurate but the folk at maxmind (where the geo database stuff is done) do a
pretty good job of keeping their database
up to date... it can be a hard thing to do with all the IPs that are moved and
reassigned every day...

previously you stated that you are running windows... are you saying that you,
personally, run windows or that the
webserver and/or webalizer are running on windows??

Then if i want my webalizer to do it, do i still need to install
that geolizer? Would you mind to guide me through the process.

My Logfile shows this:
66.249.66.138 - - [14/Oct/2004:06:19:49
+0800] "GET /acatalog/small_2841.jpg HTTP/1.1" 200 2730 "-
" "Googlebot-Image/1.0"

It does not show any Domain name, but IP address. If i were to
configure the DNS reverse lookups right, would it slow down my web
server?

> what the geolizer stuff does is to tell where the unresolved IPs

Thats what i hope to do, getting all the unresolved IP add to tell
me the location and be shown it on the pie chart.

I mean, my computer is usign WINDOWS XP. As for the webalizer is ftp
to my web server.

no... geolizer is only for telling you the locations of the unresolved IPs...

somewhat but no moreso than having webalizer or geolizer do it... the lookup is
going to be the same no matter what
software does it...

FWIW: i run an Apache webserver on a PII 266 and let it handle the domain
lookups... i can't see the dns hit and the
machine doesn't appear to even feel it...

where as in country or were as in domain name?

and the web server is running what OS? this is really only pertenient to whether
or not you install webaliser on the web
server or not... many pull the log files from the web server and run webalizer
locally for their reports...

I am new to Webalizer and have been assigned to try and see if i can
automate it to do the monthly reports but to export the results
straight to an excel spreadsheet instead of the html report. Can
anyone help in this matter?

Sorry, i know how to export to excel but i was wondering if there is
a way to shape the output to my standards instead of the default way
that Webalizer outputs it (basically the same as the html in a
spreadsheet). I need to be able to put each piece of data in a
predetermined spot on the sheet. Thanks for the help.

There's a version of Webalizer that uses CSS -
www.stonesteps.ca/webalizer. They also load language files on start
up (useful in hosting). No DNS, though.

Hello,

I have a problem with the windows version off webalizer.

after processing the log files the size in Kbytes are mensioned in
bytes(in the image)

correctly monthly banthwith = 2000000 byte so 2000Kbyte

it shows in the image 2000000 kbyte

Does someone has the same problem or someone that has a solution for
this problem?

Thx

Kristof,

Without seeing your image, I would recommend comparing one day's information
from your log files to the data in your webalizer.hist file to see if the
numbers match.

If your numbers do not match, I would then check your webalizer.conf file to
see if you've dropped a zero or made an incorrect entry anywhere.

Also, what is your setup? That is, which Win/IIS versions and what does your
webalizer.conf look like?

Cheers,
Kevin

The numbers are identical so when i do with other prg i get

Kristof,

If your numbers are correct, with the exception of the comma, they are the
same.

	 2123,123Kbyte (from "other prg")
	  2123123Kbyte (from webalizer)

   Is that the case?

Kevin

Kevin,

no that isn't the case

include the coma for the other program
so other program gives 2123Kbyte -> ok
webalizer gives 2123000Kbyte

Kristof,

In your IIS logging settings, are you collecting either Bytes Sent or Bytes

so other program gives 2123Kbyte -> ok
webalizer gives 2123000Kbyte

Kristof,

What you may want to try is to un-check both of these, copy your current log
file to a .old or .bak extension, click through some web pages and travel the
site you are monitoring. Then run webalizer and check to see what your readings
are.

I do not have these two checked in my current setup and am getting good results.

Don't forget to restart your web server once you've changed the logging
settings.

Kevin

Hello

I'm encountering a problem with webalizer. For some reason it stops
generating the statistics reports at some date although there are
still log files of later dates. It just sotps without an error. For
example now it stops somewhere in september. Now when I remove the log
files of January for example it will execute till the end of october.
Has anybody an idea why it is doing this?

Thank you for your help
Jan

Hello Jan,

webalizer only can process about 200 log files @ once

So normaly if you use IIS you can have daily logs.
Daily log files from january until now are about 300 log files.

what you can do is use a script to clean up the old log files and make
webalizer run incremental.

necessary.

mmm when I disable Bytes Send and Bytes Received I don't get anything
from bytes it stays 0 in webalizer

What type of logging do you use?
I'm using W3C Extended Log File Format with all properties active until now

Hello kevin,

I think U are using another version off webalizer. I don't need the
cygwin file to run webalizer
it is 1 exe file webalizer.exe from about 278Kbyte big

I just don't know how webalizer will calculate the used bandwith(kbyte
or byte) if he don't find it in the log file like described below.

I checked this like you said and it seems not to work
I have a lof file now from 45Kbyte big and there are several big
entry's in like large pages. I should at least get 1kbyte but i still
get nothing
I did a stop and start when i changed the setting to the site

the log file entry looks like this
#Software: Microsoft Internet Information Services 6.0
#Version: 1.0
#Date: 2004-10-29 06:50:33
#Fields: date time cs-uri-stem cs-username c-ip cs(User-Agent)
cs(Referer) sc-status

Kristof,

Here is the version I am using from the mrunix.net site.

	 http://www.mrunix.net/pub/webalizer/webalizer-2.01-10-win32-bin.zip

   Hope that helps.

Kevin

Hello kevin,

I think U are using another version off webalizer. I don't need the
cygwin file to run webalizer
it is 1 exe file webalizer.exe from about 278Kbyte big

I just don't know how webalizer will calculate the used bandwith(kbyte
or byte) if he don't find it in the log file like described below.

I checked this like you said and it seems not to work
I have a lof file now from 45Kbyte big and there are several big
entry's in like large pages. I should at least get 1kbyte but i still
get nothing
I did a stop and start when i changed the setting to the site

the log file entry looks like this
#Software: Microsoft Internet Information Services 6.0
#Version: 1.0
#Date: 2004-10-29 06:50:33
#Fields: date time cs-uri-stem cs-username c-ip cs(User-Agent)
cs(Referer) sc-status

There isn no cs-bytes or sc-bytes in this line. Can it be that the
version of Webalizer you are using takes the status code and reports
it as if it's bytes transferred?

The version of Webalizer I'm using parses MS log headers so that the
log fields can be in any order. Make sure your version does that as
well.
