From the webalizer.conf:

DNSCache specifies the DNS cache filename to use for reverse
DNS lookups. This file must be specified if you wish to perform
name lookups on any IP addresses found in the log file.

NCSA is a more standard format, however, to create stats with
webalizer you can also use W3C. If your log is in the IIS format
(logfiles start with 'in'), you should convert them to NCSA so
they can be processed by webalizer.

I may be speaking out of line here, since I use webalizer under
FreeBSD and not Win2K, but I believe strongly that this item is
common between the two. Your mileage may vary.

The DNS Cache is created, updated, and used exclusively by Webalizer.
It is not a part of the operating system. When you specify the
cache file and the number of DNS children, the next invocation of
webalizer or webazolver will attempt to create it. Further
invocations will use and update the cache.

If you are processing different sites on the same server with
webalizer, all of the sites can use a common DNS cache, which should
improve performance proportional to the commonality of the IPs
accessing each site. I have one DNS cache serving four sites on my
hosting account and it works great.

Be sure that the webalizer process will have read and write access
for the directory with the cache if you don't put it in the same
directory as webalizer.hist and webalizer.current.

The DNS.README file in the *nix distribution explains the details of
the two ways to invoke webalizer's DNS capabilities. I'm sorry that
I can't say more about the Windows port, although I hope it also has
the very informative DNS.README. :-)

Yes, it has to do something with the fields included in the logs, you need to
get into Advanced logs settings and activate the basic 8 or 9 fields.

I have to add just one thing to this story. If you use the
'ServerList' option, you should specify a full path to the
DNS Cache file, otherwise it won't be read the next time you
start webalizer.

The entry page number is the number of times this page was the first
page the visitor accessed on your site e.g. if you have a splash page
as your first page, then it will receive the most hits
(theoretically), but the web-savvy users will simply bookmark the
page they want to see e.g. the 2nd page with the navigation. So the
first page isn't always the highest entry page.
As for exit, thats the page the user leaves the site from...if you
have a lot of exits on your main page then perhaps there is nothing
to keep the attention of the user, change the page to make it more
appealing.

I hope this is understandable.

hi

their are different ways of doing this, depending on what you want to do

P.S. this is for windows 2000 with IIS 5.0 (dont know what you have)

1.. if you want to allow people access to the webalizer folder through
internet
you can do so by either

a) setting up a site named (webalizer.whatever) etc or
b) altering the access writes to the folder/files containing the file, and
link to the one you need, to do this (do this using my computer, and
searching to the files not IIS)

	 i. click on the folder/file that you require, and choose properties
ii. choose the tab for security
iii. add a new user / Or delete the user depending on what you want
to do. normally for full access from all possible visitors it is something
like
IUSER(guest)[computer name] so by adding or deleting this
from the file, will provide or not provide access to it

the above will allow anyone access to the files for viewing from the
internet

2.. if you are looking to give someone admin access for the site, you can do
that by entering the properties of the site, through iis and choosing
administration, and add the users details.

hope this helps, if not contact me and i will assist in any way i can

ok in that case, you can set this up, by

clicking on the permissions wizard in the webalizer site.... and adding the
people who are permitted to access the site to this list, then click on the
properties for the site, and set the security level for access to the level
you require. I normally use, windows authentication/secure authentication,
this will then not allow the site to be opened unless they have a profile
for the use of that site

OR

you can set up a database, and login form, for the sites, and create a php
script or asp so that cusotmers can add/delete their own permitted users.
set this up so that the pages will not be shown, unless they are authorised
in the database.

does this help

I'm trying to decide on what log analysis software to use. Thus far, I
have been using wusage (commercial software that came with my dedicated
server, full featured), but I find that it runs too slowly so I'm looking
for something faster.

I've looked at the websites of Analog and Webalizer and both of them look
like they might provide me with the statistics that I need and run fast,
so I'm trying to decide on which one to use.

Has anyone here used Analog? If so, what did you like/not like about it
compared to Webalizer?

I'll be honest, I use both, and I can get the same information out of
either. On my system (Win32) webalizer is significantly faster, due to it's
use of .history and .current files, it doesn't ever reread log, it stores
the data internally. I haven't investigated ways to improve Analog's
performance, at the moment I only run Analog daily, so it's not a problem.

The only real difference is the layout and formatting of the reports. There
is certain information that is accessible from analog, but not Webalizer,
but I've yet to use any of those tables.

I prefer Webalizer's output, but Analog+ReportMagic is almost as good. Due
to popular demand by my users, I use both.

I have been using Webalizer 1.2 and incremental stats generation. At
the end of each day, I clear out my stats file to keep hard disk

server got messed up and was reset to Feb 2036.) I fixed the date,
but now my logs show Feb 2036 as one of the months that were logged!
Is there anyway I can delete out the Feb 2036 stats without losing
all of the stats before it, and still retain the incremental stats

delete those log entries?)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I've been using webalizer over the past few months for various
clients and I have used a variety of log analyzers over the years. On
my own servers, I have been using a customized combined log format
that looks much closer to all the other system logs and makes alot
more sense to me and my customers. I would like to use webalizer on
my own servers, mainly since it does what I need, it is fast, and
it's already included in several linux distributions. Looking through
the docs and the newsgroups, I see alot of people asking about the
log format and or running conversion programs/scripts to convert logs
to something readable by webalizer. Webalizer currently cannot read
my combined logs which I currently have approx 2 years worth. Though
I do not really need to have it analyze the last two years for me, I
want to get it running on my system without generating secondary
massive log files. Well, I guess I have two questions here, 1. Does
it currently or will Webalizer (in a soon to be released future
version) accept a log file definition? (hopefully along the lines of
the combined_log format line in httpd.conf) and 2. Does anyone know
of some conversion scripts I can run against my customized apache
combined log files or should I start to write my own? (and further
delay getting the webalizer stats online)

futher info for anyone interested;

customized combined log format;
LogFormat "%t %v \"%{Referer}i -> %U\" \"%r\" %>s %B %T # %h (%a) %l %

Hi there,

I'm using webalizer at the moment, I told my server recently to
rotate my logs, it does this no problem, but now, webalizer reports

Error: Unable to restore run data (12)

But not all the time, if I delete the .hist and .current files, it
works for a while, then stops.

The logs rotate daily up to a multiple of 4, then emails the last one
to me.

Thanks in advance.

Guys,

These might be very basic questions but I am pretty new to it, here
is my problem.

I have a linux box running Apache WebServer, Webalizer is already
configured on this server, What I need to do is that

o Reverse DNS Look up to be set up.
o Logs to be set up to auto delete.
o The software should be set up to minimise the maintenance callouts.

Kindly help me out.

Hello, I'm using Webalizer mostly with great success on a busy site.

I'm having a few problems with the dns lookup part of webalizer.

First, Webalizer was not caching missed lookups (ip numbers that
failed to convert to names). This was causing a nasty performance
problem, especially since I run webazolver on each day's logs in a
separate run. I found a couple of lines commented out in
dns_resolv.c, and removed those comments to hack around this problem.

Second, a TTL of three days is pretty short. I raised it up.

Third, (this one is not fixed), the dns cache db file is getting
too big for Linux (2gb).

I propose the following fix for this problem. My fix should also
improve dns performance.

Here are the changes that might solve this:

(1) When storing a looked-up IP number in the db file, change the IP
number so that its last octet is zero. That is, only store at most
one IP lookup from any class C address range in the file.
(2) When retrieving from the file, also adjust the IP number so the
last octet is zero.
(3) Control this behavior from a config file parameter, and also
possibly by using the -X command line option.

Does anyone on this list have such a patch to webalizer (or some
other patch that does the same kind of thing)?

I'm currently running a few auctions on ebay and am pointing to my
web server for people to GET the pictures. In my httpd-access.log
it's showing all of the GETs for each of the photos, but when I run
webalizer on the log file, while it shows the hits, I wanted to see
the actual pictures being pulled down and the statistics on which
pictures are being viewed the most.

An example output would be like the one below. I dont' want to
manually grep for each picture and then run webalizer separately on
each picture. I have way too many auctions/pictures to do that. It
seems that it should be fairly easy for Webalizer to do what it does
on URLs for jpgs. Because the pictures are not being pulled up by a
specific .html/.htm file it doesn't register this in the default
reports.

Forget the question - I figured it out in the conf file. The default
was not to include the jpg/gif stats. Disregard the post.

Hello,

I use latest webalizer for win32 (V2.01-09-RB07) and it seems, there is
a bug with user agent string handling, because almost all of them are
truncated by one char...

Any ideas/suggestions?

I created and tested a patch to address these three issues, and sent
it to Brad, webalizer's author. If anybody else wants it, please
let me know.

OK... I'm looking for help and/or recommendations please :D

I'm the webmaster for a site that's beginning to average about 500-
1000 hits a day, and rather than stare at raw logfiles I want
something informative and pretty to look at in the way of stats. My
own site is hosted on a lovely server that offers free Webalizer
stats. However the site I'm talking about now has a crappy statistics
package that doesn't have half the functionality of Webalizer. On top
of that, they don't allow ANY dynamic content AT ALL. This means no
perl scripts, no database scripts, no ASP, ColdFusion, JSP, etc. etc.

So, my question is: Is there any way to remotely monitor a site with
the same statistical functionality of Webalizer?

Thankyou muchly.
